DESCRIPTION:The multi-faceted jazz-fusion Claude Cozens Trio from Cape Town performs in the UAE for the first time. The trio (Cozens on drums\, Kyle Shepherd on piano and keyboards\, Benjamin Jephta on acoustic and electric bass) is joined by new friends from the UAE\, Ghazi Al-Mulaifi (guitar) and Tonatiut Zardon (trumpet). \nA multi-instrumentalist with roots in improvised music\, Cozens’ drumming owes much to the rhythms of the goema\, a type of hand drum characteristically used in South Africa’s Cape jazz scene — “Cozens uses the historic language of Cape jazz to have some very fresh conversations” as one commentator put it.  \nThis is something of a reunion; the trio actually split up ten years ago to working on different projects. The members have joined forces in other formats with other artists and projects over the years but have not come together as a trio in over a decade. It’s also a reunion with NYUAD itself\, where Cozens has in the past had Adjunct Faculty status and where Ghazi Al-Mulaifi is himself a Visiting Assistant Professor. \nThe gig is sold out\, but as ever there may be returns …

SUMMARY:Siena Jazz Festival
DESCRIPTION:SUAD is collaborating with the Italian Ministry of Culture\, the Italian Cultural Institute and Accademia Nazionale del Jazz (Siena Jazz) to host a concert “with the goal of promoting young talent and contemporary jazz music”. The Academy\, the only academic institution for jazz music education in Italy\, runs the international Siena Jazz Festival for two weeks each summer; this inaugural UAE outcrop is a more modest event at the moment\, with two bands. We know that one will be Camilla Battaglia’s four piece as used for her album EMIT: Rotator Tenet (hopefully including top trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire\, who often plays with her); we don’t know the other yet. \nTomorrow (18 October) the mini-festival moves to Dubai\, with three bands playing at the Fridge.

DESCRIPTION:The Italian Ministry of Culture\, the Italian Cultural Institute and Accademia Nazionale del Jazz are brining us a taste of the Siena Jazz Festival (which runs for two weeks in Siena each summer). Three good young Italian bands will be on the bill: \nGuglielmo Santimone Trio (Guglielmo Santimone on piano – that’s him above\, Stefano Zambon on double bass\, Simone Brilli on drums): post-bop contemporary jazz with a nod to Brazil. \n4Tet (Lorenzo Simoni sax\, Guglielmo Santimone piano\, Giulio Scianatico double bass\, Simone Brilli drums): Santimone and Brill join Simoni’s quartet for a kind of Italian jazz supergroup. \nVittorio Gravagna Rosmarino Trio (Vittorio Gravagna guitar\, Stefano Zambon double bass\, Giovanni Nardiello drums): tipped for big things — minimalist jazz rock with a Mediterranean feel.
