DESCRIPTION:The Fridge Concert Series gives the Dubai-based singer-songwriter an evening for her 2022 album Qisse – a musical journey of self-love and acceptance\, with songs in Hindi\, Tamil and English\, and slick modern production values that are noticaebly rooted in Indian classical music. It’s a good album and should make a good show.

DESCRIPTION:Alserkal Avenue is being taken over for this weekend’s evenings by a food festival involving the Avenue’s own F&B outlets and a mass of invited incomers. Should be good – and the highlight of the first evening will probably be a live gig from Jindi. Born and raised in the UAE\, the award-winning Sudanese singer/songwriter has crafted a distinctive and highly danceable take on Afrobeat. He’s known for his electrifying live performances\, so this al fresco intro to his new album Reign and Fire should make for a great evening; “across the album\, Jindi’s ability to traverse diverse cultures shines through a fusion of genres\, from RnB and Dancehall to Afrobeat\, creating a global resonance” opines the PR blurb. In magpie’s view the standout track is HASSA\, created with top Nigerian producer MasterKraft. He’s on at 7pm and we’re promised an hour or so from him; otherwise there will be DJs\, including The Flip Side’s Shadi Megallaa

Here’s pop and indie band Talkintoys\, formed in 2018 in the UAE by singer Jasem and producer Abdul Rahman. Opening is the Dubai-based Bengali singer/songwriter and decolonisation activist (she released a good EP\, Hourglass\, a year ago).

DESCRIPTION:A rare chance to see an unusual\, indeed exceptional hip hop artist at work. Oddisee has always ploughed his own furrow – making his own music for the last 20 years and running his own label now\, avoiding the temptations of big-money promoters\, organising his own promotion and tours. He merges elements of jazz\, funk\, and go-go into his production\, and his lyrics eschew the easy clichés and repetition of so many hip hop artists these days in favour of an articulate\, lyrical approach. “We hear of people like Mark Twain and Edgar Allan Poe being great American authors and writers\,” he says. “But what we love about them is being displayed in rap times ten: double entendres\, metaphors\, similes\, plays on words\, the ability to use poetic devices. These are all standard mechanisms to create beautiful literature and poetry\, which are executed on an Olympic level in rap music.” \nOur feature on Oddisee is here. \nOddisee will be performing with DJ Unown. The support act is Jindi\, probably the closest homegrown equivalent to Oddisee — there are stories in his songs\, melodies that mix genres from funk to dancehall via Afrobeat. We’ll be getting pieces from his brand new album\, Reign & Fire (released 23 May). The warm-up sets come from the everr-reliable Big Hass and DJ Katt\, known for his high-energy Afrobeat-and-house-music sets.
