SUMMARY:A Hard Day’s Night: dir Richard Lester (1964)
DESCRIPTION:The Beatles before they became a studio-only band and got fed up with fame\, fortune and each other: Richard Lester’s anything-goes direction and a decent lots-of-laughs script plus some good acting from British stalwarts of the time (like Wilfrid Brambell as Ringo’s grandpa) made for a great film\, one that captured much of the sense of fun of being young in the early 1960s. The boys obviously enjoyed it\, showed some acting chops\, and contributed several excellent songs\, too – and unlike other band films of the era the numbers do occur naturally as part of the plot (it helps that the story is basically about our heroes going to swinging London to perform on a TV show). The Independent‘s summary is as good as any: “Part musical bonanza\, part laugh-out-loud farce\, part satirical social document … As invigorating and funny now as it was on its original release half a century ago\, A Hard Day’s Night offers both a perfect showcase for the Beatles and an intriguing snapshot of fast-changing\, early-1960s British society”. Recommended\, whether or not you feel the need to recapture your youth or see what all the fuss was about…

SUMMARY:Ökozid | Ecocide: dir Andres Veiel (2020)
DESCRIPTION:It is the year 2034: drought and flooding are destroying the livelihoods of millions of people. The International Court of Justice has had to evacuate from The Hague to Berlin\, where the climate catastrophe becomes the subject of legal proceedings. Two lawyers are representing 31 countries of the Global South\, which are doomed without the support of the international community; they raise questions of responsibility\, demanding compensation and a right to the integrity of nature in order to ensure their own survival. The court must decide whether German politicians will be held accountable for their failure to protect the climate and thus set a precedent … \nAndres Veiel has designed a meticulously researched movie that is all too timely in its critique of European climate protection policy over the past two decades. The film is termed science fiction\, but only the blinkered wiould deny the facts of climate change; the scenario it depicts is all too credible. A strong if unstarry cast is headed  Nina Kunzendorf\, Friederike Becht\, Edgar Selge and Ulrich Tukur. \n \nThe film screens in the NAAS programme under the umbrella title Green Reel: Films for a Sustainable Future\, featuring independent films from around the world that focus on the environment and sustainability. NAAS is a collaboration between a number of cultural institutions in the UAE: the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region\, the Embassies of France in the United Arab Emirates\, the Embassy of Canada to the United Arab Emirates\, the Italian Cultural Institute of Abu Dhabi\, the Embassy of Switzerland to the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Bahrain\, and Alliance Française Dubai. \nNAAS: Green Reel runs from 10 September to 26 November at Alliance Française Dubai. SUMMARY:Armageddon Time: dir James Gray (2022)
DESCRIPTION:James Gray’s deeply personal coming-of-age tale\, set in 1980s New York\, boasts fine performances from Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Strong as the parents and Anthony Hopkins dispensing twinkly grandfatherly wisdom – and\, as a sixth-grader making his way through school and life\, the impressive newcomer Banks Repeta. It’s an in-between world\, on the brink of the hip-hop and Reaganism but also rooted in the past and especially in the family’s Jewish history. Gray’s film is beautifully imagined\, shot with intimate naturalism by Darius Khondji and suffused in a period tobacco-coloured murkiness; it’s perceptive and humane\, elevating the smallest moments into the greatest drama. Recommended.

SUMMARY:Mary Poppins: dir Robert Stevenson (1964)
DESCRIPTION:A newly restored print of the multiple Academy Award winner\, starring Julie Andrews as the magical nanny and Dick Van Dyke as a most unlikely chimney sweep. Fantastical adventures follow as the spirited nanny turns every chore into a game and every day into a holiday as the children try to pass on some of their nanny’s sunny attitude to their preoccupied parents (David Tomlinson\, Glynis Johns). Widely considered one of Walt Disney’s crowning achievements\, Mary Poppins was the only Disney film to receive a Best Picture nomination in his lifetime. Time magazine called it “One of the best films ever produced … a fantasy of the most delicate touch and charming disposition. The sets are luxuriant\, the songs lilting\, the scenario witty but impeccably sentimental\, and the supporting cast only a pinfeather short of perfection”. The lilting songs include favourites like ‘A Spoonful of Sugar’\,  ‘Chim Chim Cher-ee’ and ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’.

SUMMARY:Rouge | Red Soil: dir Farid Bentoumi (2020)
DESCRIPTION:An occupational nurse in a chemical plant turns whistleblower over toxic discharges but has to balance fighting for the truth against the risk of alienating her entire family – many of whom work for the giant chemical works\, an ominous yet unavoidable presence that dominates their modest French town. \nThe result could be a goodies-vs-baddies thriller\, or (perhaps worse) a dogmatic dissertation on environmental advocacy; in fact it’s neither – yes\, there are (eco)thriller elements\, but the personal issues make it a rich study in real life. The whistleblower’s struggles for justice aren’t just with the company; she also has to face opposition from her father\, who has absolute faith in the corporation as a crucial job provider for the community. \nAs the review says\, it’s a “tense and timely thriller”. That’s helped in no small part by the quality of the acting (Zita Hanrot as the nurse\, Sami Bouajila as her father\, Céline Sallette as a committed journalist with a dark side). Also relevant: it’s based on a real incident (in Hungary\, as it happens\, but the same process is widely used around the world with the same dangers). \n \nThe film screens in the NAAS programme under the umbrella title Green Reel: Films for a Sustainable Future\, featuring independent films from around the world that focus on the environment and sustainability. SUMMARY:Mamma Roma: dir Pier Paolo Pasolini (1962)
DESCRIPTION:Pasolini’s audacious second feature is a tale of doomed maternal love set against a stark backdrop of ancient ruins and prefab apartment blocks on the desolate outskirts of Rome. Anna Magnani is superb as a middle-aged streetwalker who attempts to extricate herself from her sordid past and provide a decent life for her teenage son; the criminal underworld she thought she had escaped slowly returns to haunt her … Highlighting Pasolini’s lifelong fascination with the marginalised and dispossessed\, Mamma Roma offers an unflinching\, neorealistic look at the struggle for survival in postwar Italy. \nIn Italian with English subtitles.

SUMMARY:The Lost King: dir Stephen Frears (2022)
DESCRIPTION:Based on a true story – the discovery of the remains of Richard III under a Leicester car park in 2021 – this is the story of amateur historian Philippa Langley (Sally Hawkins at her best)\, whose passion and research were met with scepticism by the academic establishment. A tale of discovery\, obsession\, and stolen glory (both then and now)\, The Lost King is a magical adventure illuminated by one woman’s awakened sense of purpose. It’s beautifully acted and very well directed\, too.

SUMMARY:The Fugitive: dir Andrew Davis (1993)
DESCRIPTION:Harrison Ford is on top form as the Chicago surgeon framed for the murder of his wife who aims to prove his innocence by leading his pursuers (led by Tommy Lee Jones\, playing Tommy Lee Jones) to the man who actually committed the crime. The Cinema Space blurb calls it “a stellar showcase for Ford’s pathos\, physicality\, and intensity”; it’s also a breathless thriller with some brilliant action set pieces that transcends the original TV series by a country mile. SUMMARY:The Old Oak: dir Ken Loach (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes Ken Loach films can seem a bit of a constant battering of messages about social incohesion and unfairness. At their best\, though\, they are suffused with empathy and idealism along with the anger and the black-and-white morality; and The Old Oak is one of those. The Oak itself is a rundown pub\, metaphorically and actually the centre of passes for community in a cash-strapped corner of the north-east of England that has been suffering a slow\, painful decline since the coalmine closures of the 1980s. The arrival of a group of Syrian refugees provides a flashpoint for xenophobic tensions\, but The Old Oak’s landlord strikes up an unlikely friendship with a young female refugee. They find similarities in their situation and come up with a plan to bring the two traumatised communities together … There’s a plea for open-hearted compassion and a message of hope and solidarity in a film which starts so bleakly as a comment on modern Britain. As the Guardian put it\, “Ken Loach could hardly have delivered a more resonant\, timely or indeed angry swansong than this feature which takes up arms against the decay of national compassion and makes a statement of faith in compassion for the oppressed.”. Recommended.

SUMMARY:The Sound of Music: dir Robert Wise (1965)
DESCRIPTION:One of the best loved films of its time\, this sumptuous adaptation of the Rodgers and Hammerstein Broadway show gets renewed punch from a newly restored print of the film. SUMMARY:Thelma: dir Josh Margolin (2024)
DESCRIPTION:A poignant action-comedy featuring veteran Oscar nominee June Squibb in her first leading role and featuring the final performance of trailblazing blaxploitation legend Richard Roundtree. Squibb is Thelma Post\, a feisty 93-year-old grandmother who gets conned by a phone scammer and sets out to reclaim what was taken from her\, accompanied by an ageing friend (Roundtree) and his motorised scooter. The familiar tropes of the action genre are subverted in hilarious\, age-appropriate ways to tackle ageing with agency … An absolutely brilliant film; Cinema Space is to be commended for putting on this brand new release.

SUMMARY:Wolfwalkers: dir Tomm Moore\, Ross Stewart (2020)
DESCRIPTION:An excellent Irish animation that combines history and myth in a compelling narrative that explores friendship and difference. A young apprentice hunter journeys to Ireland with her father to wipe out the last wolf pack and befriends Mebh\, a free-spirited girl who’s part of a mysterious tribe rumoured to have the ability to transform into wolves by night. As they search for Mebh’s missing mother\, Robyn uncovers a secret that draws her further into the enchanted world of the Wolfwakers and risks turning into the very thing her father is tasked to destroy … This is the film is the third and final instalment in co-director Tomm Moore’s Irish Folklore Trilogy\, following his previous films The Secret of Kells (2009) and Song of the Sea (2014) – both of which are also recommended.

SUMMARY:Summertime: dir David Lean (1955)
DESCRIPTION:David Lean’s lush love letter to Venice was his personal favourite among his own films. A sublimely bittersweet tale of romantic longing\, it also has Katharine Hepburn at her best\, portraying the conflicting emotions in a lonely\, middle-aged American tourist forced to confront her insecurities when she is drawn into a seemingly impossible affair with a charming Italian shopkeeper (Rossano Brazzi); the result isan exquisitely tender evocation of the magic and melancholy of a fleeting\, not-quite-fairytale romance. This is a classic Cinema Space pick\, and very highly recommended.

SUMMARY:High and Low: dir Akira Kurosawa (1963)
DESCRIPTION:Classic Kurosawa\, a gripping police thriller (based on an Ed McBain story) starring the ineffable Toshiro Mifune. Kidnapping goes wrong\, moral dilemmas ensue\, and Kurosawa uses the film noir to anatomise the inequalities in modern Japanese society. “Kurosawa’s virtuoso direction provides no easy answers\,” as the blurb puts it\, “and in short\, intense sequences he portrays the businessman\, the police and the criminal as equally brutal but nonetheless human.” In Japanese with English subtitles.

SUMMARY:Sibel: dir Çagla Zencirci\, Guillaume Giovanetti (2018)
DESCRIPTION:The French-Turkish couple Çagla Zencirci and Guillaume Giovanetti have directed several films together\, and Sibel – their third feature – is a film festival favourite.  Sibel is  a mute\, but she communicates by using the ancestral whistled language of the area. Rejected by her fellow villagers\, she relentlessly hunts down a wolf that is said to be prowling in the neighbouring forest\, sparking off fears and fantasies among the village women; she crosses path with a fugitive\, the first person to take a fresh look at her … Sibel weaves together folklore\, gender roles and a fitful kind of emancipation in the story of a young woman desperate to counter the ostracism of her fellow villager in a secluded part of the mountains of Turkey. In Turkish with English subtitles.

SUMMARY:Victoria and Abdul: dir Stephen Frears (2017)
DESCRIPTION:A beautifully shot\, beautifully acted account of the friendship between Queen Victoria and a young Indian civil servant who became a powerful and influential figure in her court. Stephen Frears explores questions of race\, religion\, power\, and the farce of Empire through the prism of a highly unusual and deeply moving friendship; he gets excellent performances from Ali Fazal and the the always reliable Judi Dench in a film that is funny\, poignant and pertinent.

SUMMARY:Book-Paper-Scissors: dir Nanako Hirose (2019)
DESCRIPTION:The book designer’s job is not only to come up with the outstanding jacket of a book\, but also to carefully choose the papers and the fonts\, and layout them to create the unique physical book. This documentary on 75-year-old Japanese book designer Nobuyoshi Kikuchi presents a fascinating portrait of a man who has devoted his life to his craft – he has designed more than 15\,000 books\, and he still works with a ruler\, scissors\, and pencils\, creating unique fonts\, and making meticulous use of the particular properties of the chosen paper. He enjoys the personal exchange with authors\, a good cup of coffee\, and a stroll through the flea market … \nThis is a Cinema Akil presentation in collaboration with House of Artisans at Qasr Al Husn\, one of a series of screenings that narrate diverse stories of artisans from various backgrounds and cultures.

SUMMARY:One Word: dir Viviana Uriona (2020)
DESCRIPTION:A documentary about the impacts of climate change on the Republic of the Marshall Islands and its people.  The Marshall Islands comprises more than a thousand individual islands and islets\, most of them less than 5.9 feet above sea level. The greenhouse gas emissions of the industrialised world and the consequent rise in sea levels will likely destroy the culture of the Marshall Islands as well as its territory – and forecasts predict the destruction of the islands as early as 2050. \nIt was particularly important for filmmakers Viviana and Mark Uriona to get to know the people\, developing the together with them and therefore enabling a kind of empowerment. This approach to mutual exploration has resulted in an exciting\, vivid and highly charged documentary on what is surely the most important topic of our time. \nThis film is presented as a part of the NAAS film programme\, a collaboration between several cultural institutions in the UAE: Goethe-Institut Gulf Region\, the Embassies of France\, Canada\, Austria and Switzerland\, and the Italian Cultural Institute of Abu Dhabi. The first edition of NAAS is titled Green Reel: Films for a Sustainable Future\, and it focuses on the themes of environment and sustainability.

SUMMARY:The Witches of the Orient: dir Julien Faraut (2021)
DESCRIPTION:Just how did a group of humble factory workers become a phenomenal sports success story and the pride of an entire nation? Julien Faraut’s technically innovative and visually stunning documentary tells the tale of the Japanese women’s volleyball team’s journey to Olympic gold at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics – the culmination of a 258-game winning streak\, which won them the nickname the ‘Witches of the Orient’ because of their seemingly supernatural performance on the court. From the formation of the squad in the late 1950s as a worker’s team at a textile factory\, right up until their triumph in the Olympics\, the memories and true magic from long ago bubble up into a heady brew where fact and fable fly hand in hand … \nThis screening in the Culturist Film Club series is hosted by Hind Mezaina\, founder of The Culturist blog. It’s in Japanese with English subtitles\, and the price quoted is for the general public; it’s free to AF members.

SUMMARY:One Life: dir James Hawes (2023)
DESCRIPTION:An incredible\, emotional and inspiring true story\, one that resonates in our time as we grapple with war\, refugee crises\, and growing hatred around the world. Anthony Hopkins stars as Nicholas Winton\, a British stockbroker who helped rescue more than 600 children from Hitler’s regime on the verge of the Second World War; it was an act of compassion that was almost forgotten for 50 years\, when in 1988 a BBC television show reintroduced Winton to some of those he helped to rescue.
