In keeping with the current 421 exhibition Way of the Forest\, here it showcases two films that delve deeply into the myths\, legends\, and spirits of disappearing forests and their lingering impact on those forced to migrate to the concrete jungles of urban worlds. \nAn Invocation to the Earth dir Yeo Siew Hua\, Singapore (2020: 16 min) \nConceived during 2019\, when large-scale fires were consuming the forests of Indonesia\, the film confronts climate collapse through the lens of pre-colonial folktales and animistic rituals. \nThe Fever dir Maya Da-Rin\, Brazil (2019: 98 min) \nFeaturing dialogue in both Portuguese and indigenous languages\, this drama/thriller features a main cast of indigenous Brazilian from the Upper Rio Negro. Justino is a security guard at the harbour in Manaus; just as his daughter prepares to leave to study medicine in Brasília\, Justino succumbs to a mysterious fever. During the day\, he fights to stay awake at work; during the night\, a mysterious creature dogs his footsteps. A visit from his brother makes him remember the life he left deep in the jungle 20 years before. Between the oppression of the city and the distance of his native village\, Justino is no longer able to endure an existence without a sense of belonging.

DESCRIPTION:Last chance to see Bouchra Khalili’s 2017 video work\, part of a long series devoted to the legacy of Al Assifa (‘The Tempest’ in Arabic) – a theatre group comprising North African immigrant workers and French students that was active in Paris from 1973 to 1978. \nPremiered at Documenta 14 in Athens\, The Tempest Society is described by the artist as a hypothesis rather than a documentary or fiction; three people from different backgrounds form a group in Athens to examine the current state of Greece\, Europe\, and the Mediterranean via the theatre stag. They name themselves The Tempest Society in homage to Al Assifa. \nThe work is part of Khalili’s exhibition Between Circles and Constellations at Sharjah Art Foundation\, a show based on his enquiry into the hidden histories of solidarities among transnational and stateless communities.

The parents find shelter on the roof above the mist\, but the daughter is still in her bubble in the now fog-filled apartment … Her parents must now cope with the lack of food\, power\, and information\, but the bubble won’t hold forever so they also need an escape plan … \n\n\nThe film is well directed throughout and has some strong set pieces\, managing along the way to avoid most of the trite conventions of sci-fi or the usual survivalist story; the characters are sensible and likeable – Romain Duris\, Olga Kurylenko and Fantine Harduin are the leads – and the storyline builds to a strong climax. And is it a warning sign? Well\, the source of the toxic fog is never explained; Paris is a city that has seen an alarming increase in air pollution and toxicity rates over the past years. Make up your own mind. \n \n\n\nThis is the last film to be screened in the NAAS programme under the umbrella title Green Reel: Films for a Sustainable Future\, featuring independent films from around the world that focus on the environment and sustainability. This year’s programme focuses on notions of modernity in new African and Asian film\, cinema as resistance and resilience from Palestine and beyond\, as well as innovations in documentary filmmaking\, among other topics. \nAlso part of this year’s SFP is the Sharjah Film Platform Feature Fund that will award AED 500\,000 to one UAE-based scriptwriter\, director or lead/executive producer for the completion of an English- or Arabic-language narrative feature currently under production. DESCRIPTION:A captivating dance documentary that celebrates the life and work of the world-renowned choreographer Pina Bausch. During the preparations for the film in 2009\, Bausch died suddenly; the dancers of Bausch’s company\, Tanztheater Wuppertal\, convinced him to proceed as a way of memorializing Bausch and her choreography. The film has four major stage performances actually rehearsed by Bausch\, interspersed with solo and duet dances from many of Bausch’s other works; many of the dancers relate their stories of working with Pina. As a result\, Pina is a tribute to an extraordinary artist who redefined the boundaries of modern dance. The screening\, in the MOVE ON FILM season\, is followed by a talk and Q&A with Jean Laurent Sasportes (a principal dancer with the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch from 1979 to 1997 who has continued to be involved with the Pina Bausch repertoire).
