SUMMARY:Day 1 | Forest Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Dharamshala International Film Festival has a peripatetic and constantly changing programme called DIFF On the Road\, part of the festival’s mandate to build networks of cinematic solidarity and to extend the space for discourse around independent cinema. In keeping with the current 421 exhibition Way of the Forest\, here it showcases two films that delve deeply into the myths\, legends\, and spirits of disappearing forests and their lingering impact on those forced to migrate to the concrete jungles of urban worlds. \nAn Invocation to the Earth dir Yeo Siew Hua\, Singapore (2020: 16 min) \nConceived during 2019\, when large-scale fires were consuming the forests of Indonesia\, the film confronts climate collapse through the lens of pre-colonial folktales and animistic rituals. \nThe Fever dir Maya Da-Rin\, Brazil (2019: 98 min) \nFeaturing dialogue in both Portuguese and indigenous languages\, this drama/thriller features a main cast of indigenous Brazilian from the Upper Rio Negro. Justino is a security guard at the harbour in Manaus; just as his daughter prepares to leave to study medicine in Brasília\, Justino succumbs to a mysterious fever. During the day\, he fights to stay awake at work; during the night\, a mysterious creature dogs his footsteps. A visit from his brother makes him remember the life he left deep in the jungle 20 years before. Between the oppression of the city and the distance of his native village\, Justino is no longer able to endure an existence without a sense of belonging.

SUMMARY:Bouchra Khalili: The Tempest Society
DESCRIPTION:Last chance to see Bouchra Khalili’s 2017 video work\, part of a long series devoted to the legacy of Al Assifa (‘The Tempest’ in Arabic) – a theatre group comprising North African immigrant workers and French students that was active in Paris from 1973 to 1978. \nPremiered at Documenta 14 in Athens\, The Tempest Society is described by the artist as a hypothesis rather than a documentary or fiction; three people from different backgrounds form a group in Athens to examine the current state of Greece\, Europe\, and the Mediterranean via the theatre stag. They name themselves The Tempest Society in homage to Al Assifa. \nThe work is part of Khalili’s exhibition Between Circles and Constellations at Sharjah Art Foundation\, a show based on his enquiry into the hidden histories of solidarities among transnational and stateless communities.

SUMMARY:Casablanca Beats: dir Nabil Ayouch (2021)
DESCRIPTION:Nabil Ayouch’s grittily authentic tale of a rapper turned teacher helping his students find their creative voices is a class act. It manages to combine familiar cinematic tropes like ‘strength through making music’ and the inspirational teacher with a taste of social realism\, discursive politics and accessible rebellion. \nShot over 15 months\, which allowed the project to grow organically and gave time for the screen first-timers to develop\, Ayouch’s cinéma vérité style camerawork gives the film a documentary feel\, but Khalid Benghrib’s choreography elevates the action above the everyday through scenes that take the cast from the classroom to the recording studio\, the stage and beyond. Casablanca Beats has an infectious energy that is both enticing and accessible. Highly recommended. \nScreens in the MOVE ON FILM season.

SUMMARY:Into The Beat | Dein Herz Tanzt: dir Stefan Westerwelle (2020)
DESCRIPTION:A great coming-of-age movie – teen destined for ballet stardom discovers hip hop dance. She finds a new passion that challenges everything she knows. Torn between ballet and hip-hop\, Kaya must decide which path to follow: the one set by her family or her newfound love for dance. The feel-good vibe is matched with a strong but deftly handled ideological message: the hip hop culture is full of new age dynamism\, and it tears down the class barriers that still surround classical ballet. SUMMARY:Dans la brume | Just a Breath Away: dir Daniel Roby (2018)
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Roby’s film has a Parisian couple whose daughter suffers from an incurable disease that forces her to live in a hermetically sealed glass bubble. Then a mysterious toxic fog begins to spread in the Parisian streets\, killing anyone who gets caught in it. The parents find shelter on the roof above the mist\, but the daughter is still in her bubble in the now fog-filled apartment … Her parents must now cope with the lack of food\, power\, and information\, but the bubble won’t hold forever so they also need an escape plan … \n\n\nThe film is well directed throughout and has some strong set pieces\, managing along the way to avoid most of the trite conventions of sci-fi or the usual survivalist story; the characters are sensible and likeable – Romain Duris\, Olga Kurylenko and Fantine Harduin are the leads – and the storyline builds to a strong climax. And is it a warning sign? Well\, the source of the toxic fog is never explained; Paris is a city that has seen an alarming increase in air pollution and toxicity rates over the past years. Make up your own mind. \n \n\n\nThis is the last film to be screened in the NAAS programme under the umbrella title Green Reel: Films for a Sustainable Future\, featuring independent films from around the world that focus on the environment and sustainability. NAAS is a collaboration between a number of cultural institutions in the UAE: the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region\, the Embassies of France in the United Arab Emirates\, the Embassy of Canada to the United Arab Emirates\, the Italian Cultural Institute of Abu Dhabi\, the Embassy of Switzerland to the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Bahrain\, and Alliance Française Dubai.

DESCRIPTION:A handsome oyster farmer from the Mediterranean port town of Sète vows to win back his actress girlfriend after a botched proposal involving a ring hidden in an oyster shell. SUMMARY:Les Demoiselles de Rochefort: dir Jacques Demy (1996)
DESCRIPTION:Delphine is a dance teacher ; her sister Solange composes and teaches the piano. Maxence\, a poet and a painter\, is doing his military service; Simon owns a music shop. They are all looking for love\, without being aware that their ideal partner is very close … Demy’s extravagant tribute to the Hollywood musicals that had so enchanted him in his youth featured not just singing\, but also dancing\, multiple interwoven storylines\, and roles for some of his favourite actors – Michel Piccoli\, Jacques Perrin\, Gene Kelly\, Catherine Deneuve and more. The result is regarded by many as the best French film musical ever made. Screens in the MOVE ON FILM season.

SUMMARY:Zazie dans le métro: dir Louis Malle (1960)
DESCRIPTION:Classic surrealistic slapstick from France: Zazie is a brash and precocious ten-year-old (Catherine Demongeot) who comes to Paris for a whirlwind weekend with her rakish uncle (Philippe Noiret); he and the viewer get more than they bargained for\, however. Louis Malle anarchic\, surrealistic comedy\, based on a popular novel by Raymond Queneau that had been considered unadaptable\, rides roughshod over the City of Light. Made with real flair\, Zazie dans le métro is stream-of-consciousness slapstick\, full of great visual gags and editing tricks … Highly recommended. In French\, with English subtitles.

SUMMARY:Hadwin's Judgement: dir Sasha Snow (2015)
DESCRIPTION:A compelling hybrid of drama and documentary\, this film covers the events that led up to the infamous destruction of an extraordinary 300-year-old tree held sacred by the Indigenous Haida Nation of Haida Gwaii\, British Columbia. Inspired by John Vaillant’s award-winning book The Golden Spruce\, the film explores the complex character of Grant Hadwin\, a logging engineer and survivalist who lived and worked happily for many years in the region’s ancient forests. Witnessing the devastation wrought by clear-cutting\, Hadwin was finally driven to commit what some would say was an extraordinary and perverse act\, one that ran contrary to all he had come to value … \nInterweaving speculation\, myth and reality\, the film charts Hadwin’s emotional crusade against the destruction of the world’s last great temperate rainforest and explores the possible motives for his unprecedented crime. \n  \n \nThe film screens in the NAAS programme under the umbrella title Green Reel: Films for a Sustainable Future\, featuring independent films from around the world that focus on the environment and sustainability. \nThe final film in the programme is Daniel Roby’s Dans la brume | Just a Breath Away\, screening on 26 November.

SUMMARY:Pina: dir Wim Wenders (2011)
DESCRIPTION:A captivating dance documentary that celebrates the life and work of the world-renowned choreographer Pina Bausch. During the preparations for the film in 2009\, Bausch died suddenly; the dancers of Bausch’s company\, Tanztheater Wuppertal\, convinced him to proceed as a way of memorializing Bausch and her choreography. The film has four major stage performances actually rehearsed by Bausch\, interspersed with solo and duet dances from many of Bausch’s other works; many of the dancers relate their stories of working with Pina. As a result\, Pina is a tribute to an extraordinary artist who redefined the boundaries of modern dance. Screens in the MOVE ON FILM season.

SUMMARY:Animal: dir Cyril Dion (2021)
DESCRIPTION:16-year-old Bella and Vipulan are part of a generation that knows its very future is at risk – between climate change and the mass extinction of wildlife\, their world could well be inhabitable 50 years from now. At the instigation of director Cyril Dion\, who already nailed his colours to the mast with his 2015 investigative documentary  Tomorrow\, and the eminent primatologist Jane Goodall\, the two teenagers embark in an extraordinary quest: to travel around the world and meet with scientists and activists to find another way of living alongside other species\, more as roommates than predators. The two protagonists are simultaneously very ordinary and very engaging; Dion has produced a powerful argument for coexistence rather than competition\, and his skill is to let us draw our own conclusions. \nIn English with French subtitles.

DESCRIPTION:Daniel Roby’s film has a Parisian couple whose daughter suffers from an incurable disease that forces her to live in a hermetically sealed glass bubble. SUMMARY:More Than Honey: dir Markus Imhoof (2012)
DESCRIPTION:“If the bee disappears from the surface of the Earth\,” said Albert Einstein\, “man would have no more than four years left to live”. That’s because without the bees’ pollinating work\, agriculture could collapse and with it our ability to feed ourselves. \nWell\, all over the world bees have been dying for the past few years. Although the causes for this are still a mystery\, one thing is already clear: there is more at stake than simply a few dead insects\, and a great deal more than just honey. Imhoof’s documentary takes us on a journey to meet some of the people and places whose existence depends on bees – a Swiss beekeeper in the Alps\, the gigantic almond plantations of California\, a bee brain researcher in Berlin\, a pollen trader in China. His directorial style is laid back; there’s no hectoring here\, we can draw our own conclusions. And along the way there’s much to enjoy in this film\, with the mystery and beauty of bees emerging strongly – including the perennially fascinating question of whether individual bees are effectively buzzing cells in super-organisms: do they know more than us? \n \nThe film screens in the NAAS programme under the umbrella title Green Reel: Films for a Sustainable Future\, featuring independent films from around the world that focus on the environment and sustainability. \nNAAS: Green Reel runs from 10 September to 26 November at Alliance Française Dubai. The screenings are all free and subtitled in English. \nUpcoming: (click the title for the link) \n19 November Hadwin’s Judgement dir Sasha Snow (2015)\n26 November Dans la brume | Just a Breath Away dir Daniel Roby (2018)

SUMMARY:Gallant Indies | Les Indes galantes: dir Philippe Béziat (2021)
DESCRIPTION:On the stage of the Opéra Bastille in Paris\, 30 dancers from non-traditional genres – hip-hop\, krump\, break\, voguing – reprise and remix Jean-Philippe Rameau’s baroque 1735 masterpiece\, Les Indes galantes. It’s an opera offensive to modern sensibilities that reflected French colonial expansion and represented the myth of the noble savage; this documentary follows the cast over the course of a year as they take the idea from concept to stage\, culminating in a performance run at the Opéra Bastille. The modern mix of urban dance and opera singing represents both a human adventure and a meeting of political realities: so can a new generation of artists storm the Bastille today? SUMMARY:Into The Beat | Dein Herz Tanzt: dir Stefan Westerwelle (2020)
DESCRIPTION:A great coming-of-age movie – teen destined for ballet stardom discovers hip hop dance. She finds a new passion that challenges everything she knows. SUMMARY:Taste the Waste: dir Valentin Thurn (2011)
DESCRIPTION:Valentin Thurn’s documentary shines a spotlight on the global scandal of food waste. Why do we throw away so much? On the way from the farm to the dinner table\, more than half the food we grow gets thrown away. European households throw away 100 billion Euros worth of food each year – as much as the annual turnover at Nestlé\, the world’s largest food corporation. The food people throw away in Europe would be enough to feed all the hungry people in the world twice over … So what can we do? How can we improve our behaviour? \nThurn seeks explanations: from supermarket sales staff and managers\, from bakers\, wholesale market inspectors\, welfare recipients\, ministers\, farmers and EU bureaucrats. We all have responsibility: the EU for instance sets restrictive guidelines for selling produce (apples must have a minimum size; potatoes must not be too big or too small)\, and customers’ tastes and preference are equally burdensome (who is happy to buy day-old bread? Why do we expect flawless fruit?). At least Thurn finds that some people do oppose this madness with imagination and commitment. \n \nThe film screens in the NAAS programme under the umbrella title Green Reel: Films for a Sustainable Future\, featuring independent films from around the world that focus on the environment and sustainability.
The screening\, in the MOVE ON FILM season\, is followed by a talk and Q&A with Jean Laurent Sasportes (a principal dancer with the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch from 1979 to 1997 who has continued to be involved with the Pina Bausch repertoire).
