DESCRIPTION:As part of its current SILA: All That Is Left To You exhibition\, Maraya Art Centre is hosting two film screenings that extend the exhibition’s exploration of Palestinian memory\, resistance\, and cultural legacy. Carol Mansour’s documentary features 12 Palestinian women living in Lebanon\, Jordan and Palestine\, who draw upon the ancient and enduring art of Palestinian embroidery to share stories about their identities\, tales of resistance and memories of their homeland. As lawyers\, artists\, housewives\, activists\, architects and politicians\, each recounts a distinctly personal story; through the course of the film a collective embroidery begins to take shape\, linking one woman to another.

The story centres on a woodcutter and his family; they find a small girl in the forest who has been thrown from a moving train. The train is heading to Auschwitz\, and she was thrown to some kind of safety by her father … The film is adapted from a 2019 novel by French author and playwright Jean-Claude Grumberg\, about which one reviewer said: “It is difficult … to write a work of fiction about the Holocaust that is original; even simply in this sense\, Grumberg’s work succeeds where many have failed”. The Wanted 18 is a film about a Palestinian dairy collective in Beit Sahour that hid a herd of 18 dairy cows from Israeli security forces during the First Intifada when the dairy collective was deemed a threat to Israel’s national security. The film combines animation\, interviews\, archival footage and re-enactments to tell a story of resistance and survival. \nThe screening will be preceded by a conversation with co-director Amer Shomali.

Bit by bit\, the fractured foundation of one lie gives way to another until all that’s left is the truth … \nThe film\, which screens in the CinemaNA  series of contemporary Arab cinema\, premiered at last year’s Venice International Film Festival\, where it won the Orizzonti Award for Best Screenplay. The film also received the Étoile d’Or at the Marrakech International Film Festival and the Golden Alexander at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival\, among its other awards. \nThe screening is following by a conversation with the director\, Scandar Copti\, about the creative process and the cultural realities that shape his work.  “Sharing Happy Holidays through CinemaNA at The Arts Center at NYUAD feels like bringing the film home\,” says Copti. “For the past eight years\, I’ve been curating this Arab film series\, and teaching film here at NYU Abu Dhabi for more than 12 years\, so this space is part of my own cinematic journey.” \nThe film is in Arabic and Hebrew with English subtitles.
