SUMMARY:Ramona: dir Andrea Bagney (2022)
DESCRIPTION:Andrea Bagney’s debut feature\, largely shot in black and white in a stylistic nod to the French New Wave of the 1960s\, is a romantic comedy with a difference. After living abroad for several years\, Ramona and her boyfriend Nico return to Madrid where she hopes to restart her acting career. On the evening before her first audition\, she encounters a charismatic older man named Bruno. They walk together and head to a bar: there’s certainly friendship\, but could they also be falling in love? DESCRIPTION:Sudan\, late 1980s. People cross the desert on foot or cover long distances by car and truck. In Al Mahatta\, Eltayeb Mahdi shows encounters at one of the large crossroads between Khartoum in the centre of the country and Bur Sudan on the Red Sea. \nEltayeb Mahdi studied in Cairo and became part of the Sudanese Film Group\, which was founded with the intention of telling stories about their country and confronting young people with the realities of their homeland. Identity formation – not through the detour of referencing Europe or America\, but with a view to the situation in their own country. Al Mahatta shows in a programme of Friday-evening films selected by Ose Ekore to support Efie Gallery’s current group exhibition time heals\, just not quick enough (runs to 30 July).

SUMMARY:Shades of Yellow: dir Sergio Pontier (2024)
DESCRIPTION:Sergio Pontier reshapes the portrayal of black childhood\, reflecting on the innocence of his youth and how it defined him; voyaging into mundane moments from his childhood\, made nostalgic and meaningful on reflection\, the Afro-Dominican-Spanish photographer and filmmaker has created a visual poem that touches on identity\, blackness\, community\, brotherhood and friendship and seeks to return to a time when the desire to grow up overruled all. Pontier rejects the common portrayal of black childhood as dark and dangerous\, questioning the often violent depictions he found himself unable to relate to. \nShades of Yellow shows in a programme of Friday-evening films selected by Ose Ekore to support Efie Gallery’s current group exhibition time heals\, just not quick enough (runs to 30 July).

SUMMARY:Summer Cinema: Rematerialising the Archive
DESCRIPTION:Jameel’s Summer Cinema\, organised in collaboration with The Culturist Film Club and curated by Hind Mezaina\, is a season of free-to-attend films about cities\, archives\, and the ways we live and remember together. Audiences are encouraged to engage in “collective viewing” – each screening includes informal talks with filmmakers\, artists\, and special guests – and food and refreshments will be available. \nThis programme brings together two experimental films that reflect on colonial and corporate archives\, showing how they can reveal and distort\, illuminate and erase. \nThe Flowers Stand Silently\, Witnessing: dir Theo Panagopoulos (2024\, 17 min –still above) \nA filmmaker of Palestinian descent based in Scotland unearths a rarely-seen film archive of silent colour films of Palestinian wildflowers made in the 1930s and 1940s by Scottish missionaries in British-occupied Palestine and decides to reclaim the footage. This tender film essay questions the role of image-making as a tool of both testimony and violence when connected to entanglements between people and the land. \nScenes of Extraction: dir Sanaz Sohrabi (2023\, 43 min) \n This essay film takes the viewer on an archival stroll into the British Petroleum Archives to unearth the still and moving images that documented this expansive colonial network of geological explorations across Iran between 1901 and 1951\, It weaves through decades of archival documents to parse out the visual history of the ‘reflection deismograph’ method of oil exploration\, and traces the technical and social entanglement between the infrastructures of oil and the camera during the operations of British Petroleum across the Iranian oil belt. \nFollowing the screening Hind Mezaina will be in conversation with archivist and researcher Jasmine Soliman. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:I Am Cuba: dir Mikhail Kalatozov (1964)
DESCRIPTION:A landmark in radical political cinema and one of the most visually ravishing films ever made\, this legendary hymn to revolution was the product of an ambitious collaboration between the Soviet and Cuban film industries\, I Am Cuba unfolds in four explosive vignettes that capture Cuban life on the brink of transformation\, as crushing economic exploitation and inequality give way to a working-class uprising. \nThe film the last in a programme of Friday-evening films selected by Ose Ekore to support Efie Gallery’s current group exhibition time heals\, just not quick enough (runs to 30 July).

SUMMARY:Summer Cinema: Home\, Longing and Solitude
DESCRIPTION:Jameel’s Summer Cinema\, organised in collaboration with The Culturist Film Club and curated by Hind Mezaina\, ia a season of free-to-attend films about cities\, archives\, and the ways we live and remember together. The four short films this evening explore ideas of belonging\, identity\, and human connection with humour\, tenderness\, and insight: \nWhy is My Grandfather’s Bed in Our Living Room? dir Sarah Alhashimi (2021\, 7 min) \nAn Emirati family recall the sudden loss of their ancestral house to development plans aimed at modernising the city. A century-old wooden bed\, the only tangible memory that remains\, is a poignant feature of their story. \nPractical Dreams: dir Yulia Piskuliyska (2019\, 9 min) \nAn experimental documentary which examines the existential outlook on life of Antony\, a long-time UAE resident who builds houses for a living but is at a loss when it comes to explaining what home really means to him. \nThe Tobacconist: dir Keifer Nyron Taylor (2024\, 22 min) \nTobias\, an unemployed British-Jamaican personal trainer\, sells counterfeit tobacco for his mother who is moving back to Jamaica after deportation threats. One violent encounter with a war veteran rough sleeper\, a spectral reminder of his father who also fought for Britain\, turns his quick cash scheme into a haunting odyssey across South London. \nTender Loving Care: dir Kalina Pulit (2023\, 20 min) \nA single woman in her 30s living in London calls up various customer care lines in search of some kind of connection. She pushes the boundaries of people she speaks to\, with varying results; she seeks dating advice from her bank\, talks about films with her doctor and bonds with her Internet provider over the topic of reincarnation. Call centres become a backdrop for conversations about the meaning of life and big city loneliness. \nFollowing the screening\, Sarah Alhashimi will discuss the films with Hind Mezaina. Audiences are encouraged to engage in collective viewing\, stay for the discussion\, and enjoy food and refreshments available throughout the evening.

SUMMARY:Hester Street: dir Joan Micklin Silver (1975)
DESCRIPTION:Carol Kane is extraordinary as a Jewish immigrant arriving in late 19th-century New York with her young son Yossele (Paul Freedman) to join a husband (Steven Keach) who she hasn’t seen in three years. He’s embraced the new world and regards his wife as a throwback to a culture that he desperately wants to forget; she finds it hard to adapt to the new life\, too attached to the traditions of her former community to envelop herself fully in New York’s modernity. It could’ve been gloomy\, the underbelly f the Gilded Age\, but in fact it’s an entertaining and humorous film that earned Kane an Oscar nomination.

Wavering between genius and madness\, Nemo has launched a deadly crusade across the seven seas – so can the captive crew foil his evil plan before he destroys the world? SUMMARY:Sorry We Missed You: dir Ken Loach (2019)
DESCRIPTION:Characteristically powerful social drama of the British working class from Ken Loach. This wrenching\, intimate family drama exposes the dark side of the so-called ‘gig economy; an unrelenting work schedule\, a ruthless supervisor and the needs of their two teenage children cripple the dreams of delivery van driver Ricky and his care-assistant wife Abby. As always\, Loach gets superb acting from his relatively unknown ensemble cast\, and the reviews wwre uniformly enthusiastic – “brilliant”\, “utterly absorbing”\, “unmissable”.

SUMMARY:Sharjah International Film Festival for Children & Youth (SIFF)
DESCRIPTION:The 12th Edition of SIFF takes place 6 to 11 October at VOX Cinemas in City Centre Al Zahia with what looks like a strong lineup – 76 films (chosen from 1\,740 submissions!) representing 26 countries. South Korea is participating as a Country of Honor\, giving audiences the opportunity to explore the way Korean cinema’ has become a major contributor to South Korea’s creative economy\, soft power\, and tourism industry. \nThey include three Middle East premieres – animated feature Miss Moxy (dir Wip Vernooij and Vincent Bal\, Netherlands)\, the story of a cat who has to find her way back home with a couple of unlikely friends; Sarah Talab’s Saudi feature Hajeer\, about a young musician whose life is turned upside down after suffering a childhood illness that causes him to lose his hearing; and Seryeong Jeong’s 2:15PM\, a remarkable poignant tale that you should really see if you can. Ten-year-old Hyunsu comes across six-year-old Jo Minha\, who has been isolated from the world by her abusive father; understanding the power of kindness\, Hyunsu sneaks visits to Jo Minha at precisely 2:15pm each day for a fleeting ten minutes together … \nOn the sidelines\, SIFF Pop-Up will be hosted in Sharjah Research Technology & Innovation Park with a series of activations and workshops aiming to encourage the young to get involved with film. \nThe website is less than helpful at the moment: right now you can’t tell exactly what’s showing when\, or how much the tickets might be. Hopefully it will get sorted out …

SUMMARY:La Llorona: dir Jayro Bustamante (2019)
DESCRIPTION:Guatemalan auteur Jayro Bustamante’s transfixing fusion of folklore\, magical realism and searing political commentary was inspired by the real-life indictment of the authoritarian Efraín Ríos Montt for crimes against humanity. A notorious\, indignant\, ageing former military dictator\, Enrique stands trial for atrocities committed against Guatemala’s Maya communities; as a horde of angry protestors threatens to invade his opulent home\, the women of the house – his haughty wife\, conflicted daughter\, and precocious granddaughter – weigh their responsibility to shield the erratic\, senile Enrique against the devastating truths being publicly revealed. While battling legal repercussions and the people’s demands for justice\, he and his family are plagued by a series of increasingly strange and disturbing occurrences\, seemingly brought on by an enigmatic new housekeeper. With a restraint that renders the film’s shocks all the more potent\, Bustamante crafts a chilling vision of a nation reckoning with collective harms and the restless ghosts of a past that refuses to die … Recommended. \nIn Spanish\, Mayan-Caqchickel and Mayan-Ixil\, subtitled in English.

SUMMARY:Psycho: dir Alfred Hitchcock (1960)
DESCRIPTION:It doesn’t get much better than the original if you want a psychological thriller dripping with suspense. Janet Leigh stars as Phoenix secretary Marion Crane\, absconding with a small fortune of her employer’s money; she takes a wrong turn in a storm and finds herself at the Bates Motel\, where Anthony Perkins is in suitably scary form as proprietor Norman Bates. We all know what happens next\, but as private detective Martin Balsam and Marion’s sister (Vera Miles) search for Marion\, the horror and the suspense mount to a terrifying climax … Hitchcock’s film\, definitely one of his greatest movies\, has become a cultural phenomenon with its mix of suspense\, horror\, mystery\, black comedy; this is the original cut of the movie\, exactly as intended by the director.

SUMMARY:Les Choristes: dir Christophe Barratier (2004)
DESCRIPTION:This French-language musical drama has a famed French conductor performing in the United States returning to his home in France for his mother’s funeral. An old friend calls round with a diary that belonged to their old teacher; reading it together\, they learn how he tamed an unruly group of kids by forming a choir and teaching them to sing … The result is a low-key heartwarmer that manages to be uplifting without overdoing the sentimentality.

SUMMARY:Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein: dir Charles Barton (1948)

Chaos ensues as Chick and Wilbur get mixed up in an evil plot to switch Wilbur’s brain with Frankenstein’s; things aren’t helped by the presence of Larry Talbot (Lon Chaney\, Jr.)\, who turns into The Wolf Man when the moon is full … Plays in a double with The Mummy at 3.25pm.

SUMMARY:The Teachers' Lounge: dir İlker Çatak (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Carla Nowak (Leonie Benesch) is an idealistic new high-school teacher. She seems to have connected with her Year 8 students\, who are engaged and eager to learn in her maths class. But something is bubbling underneath the surface\, and she’s quickly thrust into a delicate situation when a Turkish boy is suspected of theft. Not convinced of his guilt\, Carla takes matters into her own hands and inadvertently starts down a path that soon begins to spiral out of control. As she tries to mediate between students\, parents and opinionated colleagues\, she is relentlessly confronted with the structures of the school system. Carla is pushed to her limits\, and the school becomes a proxy for the cultural and ethical clashes of modern day society … \nThe Teachers’ Lounge is a study in power dynamics\, with themes of truth\, justice\, racism\, respect\, and children’s rights that demonstrate how individuals are worn down between entrenched positions. Playing out like a thriller\, the film expertly explores the fault lines of contemporary society; the award-winning German writer-director İlker Çatak has produced a brilliantly observed drama that was deservedly nominated for an Oscar and is a favourite on the festival circuit. \n

SUMMARY:Happy Holidays: dir Scandar Copti (2024)
DESCRIPTION:Studying away from home has given Fifi (Manar Shehab) a new sense of autonomy\, but waking up in a hospital room after minor car accident in Jerusalem and surrounded by her family she will have to decide how much of her new self she’s willing to reveal. \nMeanwhile\, back in Haifa\, Fifi’s brother\, Rami (Toufic Daniel)\, has secrets of his own; his girlfriend’s change of heart has shaken his confidence in the future\, leaving him in a tense battle between ego and paranoia. Not knowing where to turn\, Rami fixates on the little control he has\, desperately searching for a way to steer an outcome that may ultimately be beyond his control. \nThis panoramic family drama has no perfect characters\, yet everyone’s opinion matters. Structured like glimpses into private moments\, the story unfolds through a destructive blend of personal quests\, poor choices\, and the quiet weight of social expectations. Bit by bit\, the fractured foundation of one lie gives way to another until all that’s left is the truth … \nThe film\, which screens in the CinemaNA  series of contemporary Arab cinema\, premiered at last year’s Venice International Film Festival\, where it won the Orizzonti Award for Best Screenplay. The film also received the Étoile d’Or at the Marrakech International Film Festival and the Golden Alexander at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival\, among its other awards. \nThe screening is following by a conversation with the director\, Scandar Copti\, about the creative process and the cultural realities that shape his work.  “Sharing Happy Holidays through CinemaNA at The Arts Center at NYUAD feels like bringing the film home\,” says Copti. “For the past eight years\, I’ve been curating this Arab film series\, and teaching film here at NYU Abu Dhabi for more than 12 years\, so this space is part of my own cinematic journey.” \nThe film is in Arabic and Hebrew with English subtitles.

SUMMARY:La Plus Précieuse des Marchandises | The Most Precious of Cargoes: dir Michel Hazanavicius (2024)
DESCRIPTION:This moving animated feature was deservedly selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. The story centres on a woodcutter and his family; they find a small girl in the forest who has been thrown from a moving train. The train is heading to Auschwitz\, and she was thrown to some kind of safety by her father … The film is adapted from a 2019 novel by French author and playwright Jean-Claude Grumberg\, about which one reviewer said: “It is difficult … to write a work of fiction about the Holocaust that is original; even simply in this sense\, Grumberg’s work succeeds where many have failed”. Much the same applies to the film. Recommended. \nIn French with English subtitles. AF members pay AED 25.

SUMMARY:The Wind Will Carry Us: dir Abbas Kiarostami (1999)
DESCRIPTION:Kiarostami wrote and directed this deceptively simple but highly affecting film about a journalist posing as a city engineer who arrives in a Kurdish village to document the locals’ mourning rituals in anticipation of the death of an old woman. She doesn’t die\, though\, and the journalist is forced to slow down and appreciate the lifestyle of the village. The result is a beautifully shot movie\, simple and honest\, about life\, death\, and living … \nScreens as part of a new monthly film programme in Efie’s Rekord Gallery tracing the intertwined histories of African and Arab Liberation Cinema: “through a carefully curated selection of films\, the series interrogates how revolutionary aesthetics\, political struggle\, and the diasporic imagination have shaped\, and continue to shape\, the language of cinema across continents”. It’s organised with Bootleg Griot\, an independent public library project currently ensconced in the Rekord Gallery that is aimed at improving access to literature and print media – especially from writers and collectives of African descent.
