SUMMARY:Afterlives: dir Kevin Lee (2025)
DESCRIPTION:A desktop documentary that critically engages with the historical and digital traces of extremist propaganda\, questioning how images of violence circulate\, mutate\, and persist. The film moves between virtual investigations and real-world encounters with artists\, activists\, and researchers who seek to resist the effects of such media. At its core is the figure of Medusa\, a victim of violence whose gaze turned viewers to stone – invoked as a symbol of both the dangers and transformative potential of looking. \nScreens in the Jameel’s second Summer Cinema programme\, in collaboration with Hind Mezaina’s Culturist Film Club. Screenings are followed by an informal discussion with invited guests.

SUMMARY:La Ferme des Bertrand (The Bertrand’s Farm): dir Gilles Perret (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Reflective\, slightly elegiac documentary on rural French farming life via three visits over 50 years to a family farm in Haute-Savoie. In 1972\, the Bertrand dairy farm — run by three brothers and home to a hundred animals — is filmed for the first time. Director (and neighbour) Gilles Perret returned in 1997\, when the farm is being passed on to nephew Patrick and his wife Hélène. Twenty‑five years later\, he picks up the camera again as Hélène prepares to hand over the reins. Through the voices and gestures of those who shaped the farm across generations\, the film traces intimate life paths shaped by work\, continuity\, and change … \nIn French with English subtitles. Screens as part of the series Family Reel: Celebrating the Year of the Family.

Through the eyes of citizens\, filmmakers and artists\, the film reconstructs a fragmented history in a country without a national archive\, celebrating creative expression as both resistance\, renewal and a way to preserve memory. \nScreens in the Jameel’s second Summer Cinema programme\, in collaboration with Hind Mezaina’s Culturist Film Club. SUMMARY:Thirteen Lives: dir Ron Howard (2022)
DESCRIPTION:Ron Howard’s dramatisation of the incredible rescue of 12 boys and their football coach from the Tham Luang Nang Non cave system in 2018. Trapped following an unexpected rainstorm\, a team of world-class divers navigated through miles of dangerous cave networks to find the boys – but finding them was only the beginning. Viggo Mortensen\, Colin Farrell\, and Joel Edgerton star. Howard\, who knows how to ramp up the tension in a true-life near-disaster (he did Apollo 13\, after all) delivers a gripping survival drama built on tension\, realism\, and quiet heroism. Another good pick in Cinema Space’s continuing programme of free screenings …

SUMMARY:Cinderella: dir Wilfred Jackson\, Hamilton Luske\, Clyde Geronimi (1950)
DESCRIPTION:Walt Disney spent more than a decade developing this animated film version of the fairy tale about a beleaguered girl\, tormented by her unsympathetic stepmother and stepsisters\, who gets a chance at romance and a better future through the intervention of her fairy godmother. Disney had the entire film staged with live actors to create reference footage for the animators to work from … This beautifully restored version looks like a great Sunday morning treat for the family.

SUMMARY:Familiar Touch: dir Sarah Friedland (2024)
DESCRIPTION:A coming-of-old-age story with real compassion: writer-director Sarah Friedland’s story follows the octogenarian Ruth Goldman (noted stage actress Kathleen Chalfant – “an astonishingly nuanced\, considered and graceful performance” said the Guardian review) as she copes with dementia and her shifting\, fading memories in an assisted living facility. “Friedland explores the human mind in all its frailness and glory” said Sight & Sound of this gentle life-affirming drama. SUMMARY:The Glassworker: dir Usman Riaz (2024)
DESCRIPTION:First-time director Usman Riaz embraces the old-fashioned star-crossed romance with a beautifully animated film about a young glassblowing artist and his lost love. At the same time it’s a truly humanist\, demonstrating how art and creativity can provide solace and strength even in the darkest times. It’s Pakistan’s first hand-drawn animated film\, inspired by the films of Studio Ghibli and ten years in the making. Another good pick in Cinema Space’s continuing programme of free screenings.

SUMMARY:For A Few Dollars More: dir Sergio Leone (1965)
DESCRIPTION:The second chapter in Sergio Leone’s epic Dollars Trilogy ups the ante with more tension\, more grit\, and a bigger budget thanks the success of the first outing for the Man With No Name. This time around two rival bounty killers (Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef) are hunting the same target\, the outlaw known as El Indio (Gian Maria Volonté). Forming an uneasy alliance\, the pair infiltrate El Indio’s gang … Leone’s mythic\, feverish vision of the traditional Western is packed with unforgettable visuals\, a great slow-burning score\, and sharp storytelling. This beautifully restored print is totally uncut (expect some blood!) and represents another good pick in Cinema Space’s continuing programme of free screenings.

SUMMARY:The President's Cake: dir Hasan Hadi (2025)
DESCRIPTION:Hasan Hadi’s debut feature is a beautiful tale of love\, friendship and resilience told from the perspective of a child growing up under Saddam Hussein’s oppressive regime. It was the first Iraqi film to feature at the Cannes Film Festival\, where it premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight and won both the section’s Audience Award and the Camera d’Or. \nNine-year-old Lamia (the unselfconsciously excellent Baneen Ahmad Nayyef) is required by her school to make a birthday cake for the Iraqi president. Lamia sets off into town with her grandmother Bibi (Waheed Thabet Khreibat) and her pet cockerel Hindi; as she shops for sanctioned and hard-to-find ingredients\, she meets a series of vivid characters\, some very engaging and at least one pretty creepy. The results are highly engaging\, and the cake climax is worth the wait … Highly recommended\, and kudos to Cinema Space for finding this little gem for its programme of free screening. \n

SUMMARY:Blue Heron (Egy nyár emléke): dir Sophy Romvari (2025)
DESCRIPTION:A deeply personal portrait of childhood\, family fractures\, and the fragility of recollection from award-winning filmmaker Sophy Romvari\, who drew on her own experiences for her feature debut – a deeply personal portrait of childhood\, family fractures\, and the fragility of recollection. It’s a singular coming-of-age story\, masterfully chronicling the haze of a languid summer and the hyaline clarity of the moments that defined it. \nIn the late 1990s\, eight-year-old Sasha (Eylul Guven) and her Hungarian Canadian family relocate to a new home on Vancouver Island\, but they struggle to deal with the increasingly dangerous behavioural issues of her older brother\, Jeremy (Edik Beddoes). Though Sasha overhears snatches of conversations – a distressed telephone call\, a meeting with a social worker – she never fully understands what’s happening around her. Perhaps she never will … \nPresented by Hind Mezaina’s Culturist Film Club.

SUMMARY:Rocco and His Brothers (Rocco e i Suoi Fratelli): dir Luchino Visconti (1960)
DESCRIPTION:This epic study of family\, love\, and betrayal is one of Visconti’s most revered works; it’s also one of the defining films of a new realism in Italian cinema\, unafraid to confront the hypocrisies of the ruling class\, the squalor in urban living\, and the collision between generations. Rocco and His Brothers is the story of a tight-knit family that moves from Italy’s rural south to metropolitan Milan in search of a better life – with alarming\, unforeseen consequences. Operatically weaving the stories of five brothers across a vast canvas\, the film is an acknowledged influence on Coppola’s Godfather films; the extraordinary cast including Alain Delon\, Renato Salvatori\, Katina Paxinou\, Annie Girardot and Claudia Cardinale\, and this print has been beautifully restored to its original version.
