SUMMARY:L'amore che ho: dir Paolo Licata (2025)
DESCRIPTION:A classic rags-to-riches story of a fierce\, gifted woman who rose against overwhelming odds from gruelling labour in the fields of Sicily to the most prestigious stages and huge audiences. In 1990\, the near-legendary Sicilian folk singer Rosa Balistreri was at the height of her career – but maybe also at the end of her life. As she tries everything she can to reconnect with her daughter\, Rosa’s memories of the past torment her and take her back to the most important moments of her life and work. She dedicated herself to defending the weak\, the working class\, and abused women\, and fought against every misuse of power; and at the same time\, she was close to the centre of Italian music\, theatre and art\, thanks to her encounters with the likes of Dario Fo\, Andrea Camilleri\, and Franca Rame. The title translates as ‘The love I have’; Rosa’s story reveals the soul of an extraordinary artist and the spirit of a rebel. \nThis biopic screens as part of Italian Film Week\, a curated programme of contemporary Italian cinema presented in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Abu Dhabi.

SUMMARY:Anna: dir Monica Guerritore (2025)
DESCRIPTION:An emotional biopic about the famed Italian actress Anna Magnani. In 1956\, Magnani was in the running for the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role; waiting for the news to arrive\, she spends the night wandering the alleys and squares of Rome\, among the people who love her and the memories that inhabit her heart. With her\, there is a young girl who will become her agent: Carol Levi. Dawn brings her victory\, but it is a very brief one … Anna is the story\, an impetuous woman and the world of Italian cinema that revolves around her. Above all\, there’s Roberto Rossellini\, always present in her mind – “an imprint in the heart that lives on even when time has erased everything else”. He will return and this time will never leave … Director Monica Guerritore\, who also co-wrote the script\, plays Magnani. \nScreens as part of Italian Film Week\, a curated programme of contemporary Italian cinema presented in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Abu Dhabi.

SUMMARY:John Lilly and the Earth Coincidence Control Office: dir Michael Almereyda & Courtney Stephens (2025)
DESCRIPTION:John Lilly (1915-2001) was a scientist whose adventurous research played out against the backdrops of 1950s Cold War military science\, the drug-infused counterculture of the 60s\, and the environmental push of the 70s. Narrated by Chloë Sevigny\, the documentary tells the story of Lilly’s quest\, as one historian put it\, to “get his hands on the steering wheel of consciousness” — a project that relied increasingly on psychedelics\, leaving conventional science behind. For instance\, Lilly invented the isolation tank; and he was a primary explorer in the study of dolphin communication\, founding his own lab and pairing a young female researcher with a young male dolphin in a partially-flooded house. The film reflects the scope of Lilly’s interests\, the evolution of his public persona\, and his interactions with equally exceptional contemporaries: it’s not much a biopic\, though\, as a study of a few tumultuous decades in US history that showed how ideas can seep into culture. \nScreens in the Jameel’s second Summer Cinema programme\, in collaboration with Hind Mezaina’s Culturist Film Club. Screenings are followed by an informal discussion with invited guests.

SUMMARY:Grüße vom Mars | Greetings from Mars: dir Sarah Winkenstette (2024)
DESCRIPTION:Tom is ten and different from other children: changes unsettle him\, loud noises overwhelm him\, and he feels most at home in his world of outer space — often dressed in his astronaut suit. When his mother unexpectedly has to travel to China\, Tom and his siblings Nina and Elmar are sent to stay with their grandparents in the countryside for six weeks. To Tom\, this feels like a disaster; but to encourage him\, his mother gives him a logbook and suggests treating the stay as a trial Mars mission. With Nina as the radio operator and Elmar as First Officer\, the small crew sets out to explore the “planet” Lunau — and to understand grandparents who seem to live by rules entirely their own. \nIn German with English subtitles. Screens in the NAAS Film Festival series\, which this year has the theme Family Reel: Celebrating the Year of the Family. \n

SUMMARY:Afterlives: dir Kevin Lee (2025)
DESCRIPTION:A desktop documentary that critically engages with the historical and digital traces of extremist propaganda\, questioning how images of violence circulate\, mutate\, and persist. The film moves between virtual investigations and real-world encounters with artists\, activists\, and researchers who seek to resist the effects of such media. At its core is the figure of Medusa\, a victim of violence whose gaze turned viewers to stone – invoked as a symbol of both the dangers and transformative potential of looking. \nScreens in the Jameel’s second Summer Cinema programme\, in collaboration with Hind Mezaina’s Culturist Film Club. SUMMARY:La Ferme des Bertrand (The Bertrand’s Farm): dir Gilles Perret (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Reflective\, slightly elegiac documentary on rural French farming life via three visits over 50 years to a family farm in Haute-Savoie. In 1972\, the Bertrand dairy farm — run by three brothers and home to a hundred animals — is filmed for the first time. Director (and neighbour) Gilles Perret returned in 1997\, when the farm is being passed on to nephew Patrick and his wife Hélène. Twenty‑five years later\, he picks up the camera again as Hélène prepares to hand over the reins. Through the voices and gestures of those who shaped the farm across generations\, the film traces intimate life paths shaped by work\, continuity\, and change … \nIn French with English subtitles. Screens as part of the series Family Reel: Celebrating the Year of the Family.

DESCRIPTION:A love letter to Beirut in the form of a playful and personal journey through Lebanon’s audiovisual memory – 70 years of film\, TV\, home videos\, and photography\, exploring the collective Lebanese psyche and marked by joy and intimacy\, destruction and loss. Through the eyes of citizens\, filmmakers and artists\, the film reconstructs a fragmented history in a country without a national archive\, celebrating creative expression as both resistance\, renewal and a way to preserve memory. \nScreens in the Jameel’s second Summer Cinema programme\, in collaboration with Hind Mezaina’s Culturist Film Club.
