SUMMARY:La Vallée des Fous (Sailing Home): dir Xavier Beauvois (2024)
DESCRIPTION:Jean-Paul is not a bad guy by any means\, but he is going through a rough patch – pp to his ears in debts\, he pulls away from his family and takes refuge in the bottle. But\, inside\, he dreams of adventure; and he projects these fantasies onto the Vendée Globe\, the famous single-handed\, round-the-world yacht race\, an event which he sort-of took part in … by sitting in front of his computer and joining Virtual Regatta (alongside a million other internet users). This time round\, he decides to take the virtual challenge seriously – it does after all have a €150\,000 prize for the winner – and he elects to confine himself to the boat parked in the garden of his restaurant for three whole months. Jean-Paul equips himself with all the gear – wind turbine\, a solar panel\, food rations\, medical supplies – under the dubious but loving eyes of his father and daughter. And then the day of the departure arrives … \nIn French with English subtitles. The film screens as part of the NAAS Film Festival\, a collaboration between several international cultural institutions in the UAE that screens independent films which highlight socially relevant themes.

SUMMARY:Une Part Manquante (A Missing Part): dir Guillaume Senez (2024)
DESCRIPTION:Every day\, Jay travels the length and breadth of Tokyo in his taxi\, looking for his daughter Lily. In the nine years since he has separated from his wife\, he has never been able to get custody of his daughter; Japan’s ‘clean break’ approach essentially affords legal custody to the first parent who claims the child. It’s a legal situation made all the more thorny for parents who may not have full residence status in the country. Having given up hope of ever seeing her again\, he is about to move back to France when Lily hops in his cab … This is a melodrama both tender and potent\, told with an endearing humanity … \nIn French with English subtitles. The film screens in Alliance Française’s Cine Apero programme\, meaning the ticket price incudes a drink and a snack. (The AED 45 price is for non-members; AF members pay AED 35.)

SUMMARY:Memories of Princess Mumbi: dir Damien Hauser (2025)
DESCRIPTION:Damien Hauser’s story has filmmaker Kuve travelling to Umata in 2093 to document the aftermath of a war that revived ancient kingdoms. He meets Mumbi there\, and she challenges him to make his film without AI. As Kuve searches for his own voice\, he begins to understand that even in a broken world beauty can be found in small human moments … A thrilling work of speculative cinema that draws deeply on past cinematic tradition\, Memories of Princess Mumbi asks what it means to bear witness — and what is at stake when we surrender that act to machines. \nScreens as the opener for the Jameel’s second Summer Cinema programme\, in collaboration with Hind Mezaina’s Culturist Film Club. Screenings are followed by an informal discussion with invited guests.

SUMMARY:La vita da grandi  | Siblings: dir Greta Scarano (2025)
DESCRIPTION:Irene is happy enough in Rome when her mother asks her to return for a few days to Rimini\, the city where she was brought up and from which she fled\, to take care of her older brother Omar. He’s autistic\, and he has very clear ideas about his future: he has no intention of living with her when their parents are no longer around\, and he is ready to do anything to fulfill his life’s dreams – to get married\, to have three children\, and to become a famous rap singer. But for all these things to happen\, Omar must first become independent; this comedy-drama charts the touching route through which he can become “an adult” … In their home full of memories\, Irene and Omar face fears and hopes together and discover that\, in order to grow\, sometimes you need two people. \nIn Italian with English subtitles. Presented by the Italian Cultural Institute Abu Dhabi; screens in the NAAS Film Festival series\, which this year has the theme Family Reel: Celebrating the Year of the Family. \n

SUMMARY:L'amore che ho: dir Paolo Licata (2025)
DESCRIPTION:A classic rags-to-riches story of a fierce\, gifted woman who rose against overwhelming odds from gruelling labour in the fields of Sicily to the most prestigious stages and huge audiences. In 1990\, the near-legendary Sicilian folk singer Rosa Balistreri was at the height of her career – but maybe also at the end of her life. As she tries everything she can to reconnect with her daughter\, Rosa’s memories of the past torment her and take her back to the most important moments of her life and work. She dedicated herself to defending the weak\, the working class\, and abused women\, and fought against every misuse of power; and at the same time\, she was close to the centre of Italian music\, theatre and art\, thanks to her encounters with the likes of Dario Fo\, Andrea Camilleri\, and Franca Rame. The title translates as ‘The love I have’; Rosa’s story reveals the soul of an extraordinary artist and the spirit of a rebel. \nThis biopic screens as part of Italian Film Week\, a curated programme of contemporary Italian cinema presented in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Abu Dhabi.

SUMMARY:Anna: dir Monica Guerritore (2025)
DESCRIPTION:An emotional biopic about the famed Italian actress Anna Magnani. In 1956\, Magnani was in the running for the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role; waiting for the news to arrive\, she spends the night wandering the alleys and squares of Rome\, among the people who love her and the memories that inhabit her heart. With her\, there is a young girl who will become her agent: Carol Levi. Dawn brings her victory\, but it is a very brief one … Anna is the story\, an impetuous woman and the world of Italian cinema that revolves around her. Above all\, there’s Roberto Rossellini\, always present in her mind – “an imprint in the heart that lives on even when time has erased everything else”. He will return and this time will never leave … Director Monica Guerritore\, who also co-wrote the script\, plays Magnani. \nScreens as part of Italian Film Week\, a curated programme of contemporary Italian cinema presented in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Abu Dhabi.

SUMMARY:John Lilly and the Earth Coincidence Control Office: dir Michael Almereyda & Courtney Stephens (2025)
DESCRIPTION:John Lilly (1915-2001) was a scientist whose adventurous research played out against the backdrops of 1950s Cold War military science\, the drug-infused counterculture of the 60s\, and the environmental push of the 70s. Narrated by Chloë Sevigny\, the documentary tells the story of Lilly’s quest\, as one historian put it\, to “get his hands on the steering wheel of consciousness” — a project that relied increasingly on psychedelics\, leaving conventional science behind. For instance\, Lilly invented the isolation tank; and he was a primary explorer in the study of dolphin communication\, founding his own lab and pairing a young female researcher with a young male dolphin in a partially-flooded house. The film reflects the scope of Lilly’s interests\, the evolution of his public persona\, and his interactions with equally exceptional contemporaries: it’s not much a biopic\, though\, as a study of a few tumultuous decades in US history that showed how ideas can seep into culture. \nScreens in the Jameel’s second Summer Cinema programme\, in collaboration with Hind Mezaina’s Culturist Film Club. Screenings are followed by an informal discussion with invited guests.

SUMMARY:Grüße vom Mars | Greetings from Mars: dir Sarah Winkenstette (2024)
DESCRIPTION:Tom is ten and different from other children: changes unsettle him\, loud noises overwhelm him\, and he feels most at home in his world of outer space — often dressed in his astronaut suit. When his mother unexpectedly has to travel to China\, Tom and his siblings Nina and Elmar are sent to stay with their grandparents in the countryside for six weeks. To Tom\, this feels like a disaster; but to encourage him\, his mother gives him a logbook and suggests treating the stay as a trial Mars mission. With Nina as the radio operator and Elmar as First Officer\, the small crew sets out to explore the “planet” Lunau — and to understand grandparents who seem to live by rules entirely their own. \nIn German with English subtitles. SUMMARY:Afterlives: dir Kevin Lee (2025)
DESCRIPTION:A desktop documentary that critically engages with the historical and digital traces of extremist propaganda\, questioning how images of violence circulate\, mutate\, and persist. The film moves between virtual investigations and real-world encounters with artists\, activists\, and researchers who seek to resist the effects of such media. At its core is the figure of Medusa\, a victim of violence whose gaze turned viewers to stone – invoked as a symbol of both the dangers and transformative potential of looking. \nScreens in the Jameel’s second Summer Cinema programme\, in collaboration with Hind Mezaina’s Culturist Film Club. SUMMARY:La Ferme des Bertrand (The Bertrand’s Farm): dir Gilles Perret (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Reflective\, slightly elegiac documentary on rural French farming life via three visits over 50 years to a family farm in Haute-Savoie. In 1972\, the Bertrand dairy farm — run by three brothers and home to a hundred animals — is filmed for the first time. Director (and neighbour) Gilles Perret returned in 1997\, when the farm is being passed on to nephew Patrick and his wife Hélène. Twenty‑five years later\, he picks up the camera again as Hélène prepares to hand over the reins. Through the voices and gestures of those who shaped the farm across generations\, the film traces intimate life paths shaped by work\, continuity\, and change … \nIn French with English subtitles. SUMMARY:Thirteen Lives: dir Ron Howard (2022)
DESCRIPTION:Ron Howard’s dramatisation of the incredible rescue of 12 boys and their football coach from the Tham Luang Nang Non cave system in 2018. Trapped following an unexpected rainstorm\, a team of world-class divers navigated through miles of dangerous cave networks to find the boys – but finding them was only the beginning. Viggo Mortensen\, Colin Farrell\, and Joel Edgerton star. Howard\, who knows how to ramp up the tension in a true-life near-disaster (he did Apollo 13\, after all) delivers a gripping survival drama built on tension\, realism\, and quiet heroism. Another good pick in Cinema Space’s continuing programme of free screenings …

SUMMARY:Cinderella: dir Wilfred Jackson\, Hamilton Luske\, Clyde Geronimi (1950)
DESCRIPTION:Walt Disney spent more than a decade developing this animated film version of the fairy tale about a beleaguered girl\, tormented by her unsympathetic stepmother and stepsisters\, who gets a chance at romance and a better future through the intervention of her fairy godmother. Disney had the entire film staged with live actors to create reference footage for the animators to work from … This beautifully restored version looks like a great Sunday morning treat for the family.

SUMMARY:A Fistful of Dollars: dir Sergio Leone (1964)
DESCRIPTION:Sergio Leone’s satirical riff on director Akira Kurosawa’s samurai classic Yojimbo launched the Spaghetti Western\, Clint Eastwood’s career as a movie star\, and Ennio Morricone as a household name thanks to that unforgettable score. An instant international phenomenon\, this hard-hitting epic stunned audiences with its violence\, gritty realism and tongue-in-cheek humour … Essential viewing and another good pick in Cinema Space’s continuing programme of free screenings.

SUMMARY:Familiar Touch: dir Sarah Friedland (2024)
DESCRIPTION:A coming-of-old-age story with real compassion: writer-director Sarah Friedland’s story follows the octogenarian Ruth Goldman (noted stage actress Kathleen Chalfant – “an astonishingly nuanced\, considered and graceful performance” said the Guardian review) as she copes with dementia and her shifting\, fading memories in an assisted living facility. “Friedland explores the human mind in all its frailness and glory” said Sight & Sound of this gentle life-affirming drama. Another great Cinema Space pick\, at a great price …

SUMMARY:The Glassworker: dir Usman Riaz (2024)
DESCRIPTION:First-time director Usman Riaz embraces the old-fashioned star-crossed romance with a beautifully animated film about a young glassblowing artist and his lost love. At the same time it’s a truly humanist\, demonstrating how art and creativity can provide solace and strength even in the darkest times. It’s Pakistan’s first hand-drawn animated film\, inspired by the films of Studio Ghibli and ten years in the making. Another good pick in Cinema Space’s continuing programme of free screenings.

SUMMARY:For A Few Dollars More: dir Sergio Leone (1965)
DESCRIPTION:The second chapter in Sergio Leone’s epic Dollars Trilogy ups the ante with more tension\, more grit\, and a bigger budget thanks the success of the first outing for the Man With No Name. This time around two rival bounty killers (Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef) are hunting the same target\, the outlaw known as El Indio (Gian Maria Volonté). Forming an uneasy alliance\, the pair infiltrate El Indio’s gang … Leone’s mythic\, feverish vision of the traditional Western is packed with unforgettable visuals\, a great slow-burning score\, and sharp storytelling. This beautifully restored print is totally uncut (expect some blood!) and represents another good pick in Cinema Space’s continuing programme of free screenings.

SUMMARY:The President's Cake: dir Hasan Hadi (2025)
DESCRIPTION:Hasan Hadi’s debut feature is a beautiful tale of love\, friendship and resilience told from the perspective of a child growing up under Saddam Hussein’s oppressive regime. It was the first Iraqi film to feature at the Cannes Film Festival\, where it premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight and won both the section’s Audience Award and the Camera d’Or. \nNine-year-old Lamia (the unselfconsciously excellent Baneen Ahmad Nayyef) is required by her school to make a birthday cake for the Iraqi president. Lamia sets off into town with her grandmother Bibi (Waheed Thabet Khreibat) and her pet cockerel Hindi; as she shops for sanctioned and hard-to-find ingredients\, she meets a series of vivid characters\, some very engaging and at least one pretty creepy. The results are highly engaging\, and the cake climax is worth the wait … Highly recommended\, and kudos to Cinema Space for finding this little gem for its programme of free screening. \n

SUMMARY:Blue Heron (Egy nyár emléke): dir Sophy Romvari (2025)
DESCRIPTION:A deeply personal portrait of childhood\, family fractures\, and the fragility of recollection from award-winning filmmaker Sophy Romvari\, who drew on her own experiences for her feature debut – a deeply personal portrait of childhood\, family fractures\, and the fragility of recollection. It’s a singular coming-of-age story\, masterfully chronicling the haze of a languid summer and the hyaline clarity of the moments that defined it. \nIn the late 1990s\, eight-year-old Sasha (Eylul Guven) and her Hungarian Canadian family relocate to a new home on Vancouver Island\, but they struggle to deal with the increasingly dangerous behavioural issues of her older brother\, Jeremy (Edik Beddoes). Though Sasha overhears snatches of conversations – a distressed telephone call\, a meeting with a social worker – she never fully understands what’s happening around her. Perhaps she never will … \nPresented by Hind Mezaina’s Culturist Film Club.
