SUMMARY:Do You Love Me? dir Lana Daher (2025)
DESCRIPTION:A love letter to Beirut in the form of a playful and personal journey through Lebanon’s audiovisual memory – 70 years of film\, TV\, home videos\, and photography\, exploring the collective Lebanese psyche and marked by joy and intimacy\, destruction and loss. Through the eyes of citizens\, filmmakers and artists\, the film reconstructs a fragmented history in a country without a national archive\, celebrating creative expression as both resistance\, renewal and a way to preserve memory. \nScreens in the Jameel’s second Summer Cinema programme\, in collaboration with Hind Mezaina’s Culturist Film Club. Screenings are followed by an informal discussion with invited guests.

SUMMARY:La Ferme des Bertrand (The Bertrand’s Farm): dir Gilles Perret (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Reflective\, slightly elegiac documentary on rural French farming life via three visits over 50 years to a family farm in Haute-Savoie. In 1972\, the Bertrand dairy farm — run by three brothers and home to a hundred animals — is filmed for the first time. Director (and neighbour) Gilles Perret returned in 1997\, when the farm is being passed on to nephew Patrick and his wife Hélène. Twenty‑five years later\, he picks up the camera again as Hélène prepares to hand over the reins. Through the voices and gestures of those who shaped the farm across generations\, the film traces intimate life paths shaped by work\, continuity\, and change … \nIn French with English subtitles. Screens as part of the series Family Reel: Celebrating the Year of the Family.

SUMMARY:Afterlives: dir Kevin Lee (2025)
DESCRIPTION:A desktop documentary that critically engages with the historical and digital traces of extremist propaganda\, questioning how images of violence circulate\, mutate\, and persist. The film moves between virtual investigations and real-world encounters with artists\, activists\, and researchers who seek to resist the effects of such media. At its core is the figure of Medusa\, a victim of violence whose gaze turned viewers to stone – invoked as a symbol of both the dangers and transformative potential of looking. \nScreens in the Jameel’s second Summer Cinema programme\, in collaboration with Hind Mezaina’s Culturist Film Club. SUMMARY:Grüße vom Mars | Greetings from Mars: dir Sarah Winkenstette (2024)
DESCRIPTION:Tom is ten and different from other children: changes unsettle him\, loud noises overwhelm him\, and he feels most at home in his world of outer space — often dressed in his astronaut suit. When his mother unexpectedly has to travel to China\, Tom and his siblings Nina and Elmar are sent to stay with their grandparents in the countryside for six weeks. To Tom\, this feels like a disaster; but to encourage him\, his mother gives him a logbook and suggests treating the stay as a trial Mars mission. With Nina as the radio operator and Elmar as First Officer\, the small crew sets out to explore the “planet” Lunau — and to understand grandparents who seem to live by rules entirely their own. \nIn German with English subtitles. Screens in the NAAS Film Festival series\, which this year has the theme Family Reel: Celebrating the Year of the Family. \n

SUMMARY:John Lilly and the Earth Coincidence Control Office: dir Michael Almereyda & Courtney Stephens (2025)
DESCRIPTION:John Lilly (1915-2001) was a scientist whose adventurous research played out against the backdrops of 1950s Cold War military science\, the drug-infused counterculture of the 60s\, and the environmental push of the 70s. Narrated by Chloë Sevigny\, the documentary tells the story of Lilly’s quest\, as one historian put it\, to “get his hands on the steering wheel of consciousness” — a project that relied increasingly on psychedelics\, leaving conventional science behind. For instance\, Lilly invented the isolation tank; and he was a primary explorer in the study of dolphin communication\, founding his own lab and pairing a young female researcher with a young male dolphin in a partially-flooded house. The film reflects the scope of Lilly’s interests\, the evolution of his public persona\, and his interactions with equally exceptional contemporaries: it’s not much a biopic\, though\, as a study of a few tumultuous decades in US history that showed how ideas can seep into culture. \nScreens in the Jameel’s second Summer Cinema programme\, in collaboration with Hind Mezaina’s Culturist Film Club. Screenings are followed by an informal discussion with invited guests.

SUMMARY:Anna: dir Monica Guerritore (2025)
DESCRIPTION:An emotional biopic about the famed Italian actress Anna Magnani. In 1956\, Magnani was in the running for the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role; waiting for the news to arrive\, she spends the night wandering the alleys and squares of Rome\, among the people who love her and the memories that inhabit her heart. With her\, there is a young girl who will become her agent: Carol Levi. Dawn brings her victory\, but it is a very brief one … Anna is the story\, an impetuous woman and the world of Italian cinema that revolves around her. Above all\, there’s Roberto Rossellini\, always present in her mind – “an imprint in the heart that lives on even when time has erased everything else”. He will return and this time will never leave … Director Monica Guerritore\, who also co-wrote the script\, plays Magnani. \nScreens as part of Italian Film Week\, a curated programme of contemporary Italian cinema presented in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Abu Dhabi.

SUMMARY:L'amore che ho: dir Paolo Licata (2025)
DESCRIPTION:A classic rags-to-riches story of a fierce\, gifted woman who rose against overwhelming odds from gruelling labour in the fields of Sicily to the most prestigious stages and huge audiences. In 1990\, the near-legendary Sicilian folk singer Rosa Balistreri was at the height of her career – but maybe also at the end of her life. As she tries everything she can to reconnect with her daughter\, Rosa’s memories of the past torment her and take her back to the most important moments of her life and work. She dedicated herself to defending the weak\, the working class\, and abused women\, and fought against every misuse of power; and at the same time\, she was close to the centre of Italian music\, theatre and art\, thanks to her encounters with the likes of Dario Fo\, Andrea Camilleri\, and Franca Rame. The title translates as ‘The love I have’; Rosa’s story reveals the soul of an extraordinary artist and the spirit of a rebel. \nThis biopic screens as part of Italian Film Week\, a curated programme of contemporary Italian cinema presented in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Abu Dhabi.

SUMMARY:La vita da grandi  | Siblings: dir Greta Scarano (2025)
DESCRIPTION:Irene is happy enough in Rome when her mother asks her to return for a few days to Rimini\, the city where she was brought up and from which she fled\, to take care of her older brother Omar. He’s autistic\, and he has very clear ideas about his future: he has no intention of living with her when their parents are no longer around\, and he is ready to do anything to fulfill his life’s dreams – to get married\, to have three children\, and to become a famous rap singer. But for all these things to happen\, Omar must first become independent; this comedy-drama charts the touching route through which he can become “an adult” … In their home full of memories\, Irene and Omar face fears and hopes together and discover that\, in order to grow\, sometimes you need two people. \nIn Italian with English subtitles. SUMMARY:Memories of Princess Mumbi: dir Damien Hauser (2025)
DESCRIPTION:Damien Hauser’s story has filmmaker Kuve travelling to Umata in 2093 to document the aftermath of a war that revived ancient kingdoms. He meets Mumbi there\, and she challenges him to make his film without AI. As Kuve searches for his own voice\, he begins to understand that even in a broken world beauty can be found in small human moments … A thrilling work of speculative cinema that draws deeply on past cinematic tradition\, Memories of Princess Mumbi asks what it means to bear witness — and what is at stake when we surrender that act to machines. \nScreens as the opener for the Jameel’s second Summer Cinema programme\, in collaboration with Hind Mezaina’s Culturist Film Club. SUMMARY:Une Part Manquante (A Missing Part): dir Guillaume Senez (2024)
DESCRIPTION:Every day\, Jay travels the length and breadth of Tokyo in his taxi\, looking for his daughter Lily. In the nine years since he has separated from his wife\, he has never been able to get custody of his daughter; Japan’s ‘clean break’ approach essentially affords legal custody to the first parent who claims the child. It’s a legal situation made all the more thorny for parents who may not have full residence status in the country. Having given up hope of ever seeing her again\, he is about to move back to France when Lily hops in his cab … This is a melodrama both tender and potent\, told with an endearing humanity … \nIn French with English subtitles. The film screens in Alliance Française’s Cine Apero programme\, meaning the ticket price incudes a drink and a snack. (The AED 45 price is for non-members; AF members pay AED 35.)

SUMMARY:La Vallée des Fous (Sailing Home): dir Xavier Beauvois (2024)
DESCRIPTION:Jean-Paul is not a bad guy by any means\, but he is going through a rough patch – pp to his ears in debts\, he pulls away from his family and takes refuge in the bottle. But\, inside\, he dreams of adventure; and he projects these fantasies onto the Vendée Globe\, the famous single-handed\, round-the-world yacht race\, an event which he sort-of took part in … by sitting in front of his computer and joining Virtual Regatta (alongside a million other internet users). This time round\, he decides to take the virtual challenge seriously – it does after all have a €150\,000 prize for the winner – and he elects to confine himself to the boat parked in the garden of his restaurant for three whole months. Jean-Paul equips himself with all the gear – wind turbine\, a solar panel\, food rations\, medical supplies – under the dubious but loving eyes of his father and daughter. And then the day of the departure arrives … \nIn French with English subtitles. The film screens as part of the NAAS Film Festival\, a collaboration between several international cultural institutions in the UAE that screens independent films which highlight socially relevant themes.

SUMMARY:The Voice of Hind Rajab: dir Kaouther Ben Hania (2025)
DESCRIPTION:Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania has created a docudrama that reconstructs the horrifying true story of five-year-old Hind Rajab as she is bombarded by the Israeli army in Gaza in 2024. Rajab survived the original assault by the IDF\, which killed six family members and two paramedics\, and she stayed on the phone for hours to the Palestine Red Crescent Society desperately begging for help. Rajab’s heart-wrenching voice is real; the film fictionally reconstructing the drama of the emergency responders in their call centre office. \nThis is a powerful film\, greeted with a 23-minute standing ovation when shown at the Venice Film Festival last autumn. It also begs a few questions about whether the mix of fiction and fact is at all exploitative; but you can make your own minds up about that … It is presented here by the NYUAD Film and New Media Program and screening as part of the CinemaNA series of contemporary Arab cinema. \nVery highly recommended.
