SUMMARY:The Red Turtle: dir Michaela Dudoka De Wita (2016)
DESCRIPTION:An animated fantasy drama with no dialogue that tells the story of a man shipwrecked on an uninhabited island. His attempts to escape are foiled by what turns out to be a giant red hawksbill sea turtle; she turns into a red-haired woman\, they reconcile\, and they live together on the island … Suspended between reality and a dream\, this poetic story is a meditation on beauty\, nature and the stages of human life. An Oscar nominee and an award-winner from Cannes\, the film was a co-production of legendary Studio Ghibli and a number of French production companies. \nHighly recommended. Screens in support of the Abu Dhabi Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Project in collaboration with The National Aquarium and the Environment Agency. \n

SUMMARY:POSTPONED The Voice of Hind Rajab: dir Kaouther Ben Hania (2025)
DESCRIPTION:Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania has created a docudrama that reconstructs the horrifying true story of five-year-old Hind Rajab as she is bombarded by the Israeli army in Gaza in 2024. Rajab survived the original assault by the IDF\, which killed six family members and two paramedics\, and she stayed on the phone for hours to the Palestine Red Crescent Society desperately begging for help. Rajab’s heart-wrenching voice is real; the film fictionally reconstructing the drama of the emergency responders in their call centre office. \nThis is a powerful film\, greeted with a 23-minute standing ovation when shown at the Venice Film Festival last autumn. It also begs a few questions about whether the mix of fiction and fact is at all exploitative; but you can make your own minds up about that … Very highly recommended\, \nIt is presented here by the NYUAD Film and New Media Program and screening as part of the CinemaNA series of contemporary Arab cinema.

SUMMARY:Hijra: dir Shahad Ameen (2025)
DESCRIPTION:This adventure-ish drama\, written as well as directed by Shahad Ameen\, follows Saudi grandmother Sitti travelling from Taif to Mecca to perform Hajj with her two granddaughters\, 12-year-old Janna and 18-year-old Sarah. But before they reach their destination\, Sarah disappears\, forcing Janna and Sitti into a tense search that stretches across Saudi Arabia\, crossing old pilgrimage routes and confronting strangers\, unforgiving landscapes\, long-buried family secrets\, and Sitti’s rich and complicated past … \nTheir harsh journey begins to mirror the spiritual trials of Hajj itself. While Hijra is undoubtedly entertaining\, it goes further – exploring culture\, the ties that binds families together\, and the deep intergenerational gulfs between the women. We come to see those rifts as nuanced rather than a judgement on the old ways; it’s been described as a critique of the notion that older generations of women were not free\, or that elders in general are backward. \nThis thoughtful\, engaging film screens in the CinemaNA contemporary Arab cinema series presented by the NYUAD Film and New Media Program.

SUMMARY:Constant Adjustment
DESCRIPTION:This year’s film programme as part of the Jameel’s Night School 2026 has five shorts exploring how neighbourhoods and other places endure over time. through ways of property markets\, political erasure\, and the whim of human interest. The screening will be followed by a discussion between the programme’s curator Hind Mezaina and Todd Reisz\, leader of the Night School. \nThe programme: \nWunderland Kalkar dir Ila Bêka & Louise Lemoin (2024\, 5 mins) \nWunderland Kalkar is an amusement park built at a former nuclear power station in Germany. It was completed in 1985\, one year before the Chernobyl disaster; under pressure from local interest groups\, it was finally cancelled in 1991. What to do with an infrastructure now made obsolete but far too massive to be dismantled? \nAl Basateen | The Orchards dir Antoine Chapon (2025\, 25 mins) \nIn 2015\, the Basateen al-Razi district of Damascus was razed to the ground as punishment for the population’s uprising against the regime. Having lost everything\, two former residents recall their neighbourhood. \nOkay Keskidee! Let Me See Inside dir Rhea Storr (2025\, 19 mins) \nA personal account of Black community spaces in the UK\, focusing on a former arts centre that is now a luxury apartment development. Can the digital realm replace a physical community presence and produce an accessible archive for a new generation? \nThe Architect of Luxor dir Jocelyn Saab (1986\, 18 mins) \nThe architect and philosopher Olivier Sednaoui talks about his mud-brick house\, a project which brings together the infinitely small and the infinitely huge. He explains the project from the moulding of the very first mud brick to the life philosophy on which it is based: placing East and West under one single destiny. \nBad for a Moment dir Daniel Soares (2025\, 15 mins) \nA team-building event goes wrong and brings the owner of an architect studio face-to-face with the lower-class neighbourhood that his company is gentrifying. \n

SUMMARY:Le mystère Picasso | The Mystery of Picasso: dir Henri-Georges Clouzot (1956)
DESCRIPTION:One of the best films about Picasso\, a documentary that captures his creative process by using novel filming techniques. The artist produced around 20 drawings and paintings specifically for the film\, using inks and paints that bled through the paper\, with a camera mounted at the back of the easel to capture the act of creation in real time. In the edit Clouzot employed a kind of stop-motion effect to speed up the process and depict the development of the works. \nThis should be a great accompaniment to the current Louvre show. It’s free\, but you will have to buy a museum general admission ticket.

SUMMARY:Beauty and the Beast: dir Gary Trousdale\, Kirk Wise (1991)
DESCRIPTION:A tale as old as time gets the Disney treatment\, with added lustre from a newly restored print of this family-friendly animation: the beast (an enchanted prince\, of course) tries to win the love of the young and beautiful Belle with the help of the caste’s enchanted staff (who have been transformed into a fetching collection of utensils and tableware). Great script\, good songs\, and another fine free pick from the Cinema Space programmers. \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Holdovers: dir Alexander Payne (2023)
DESCRIPTION:A warm-hearted and thoughtful holiday story of three lonely\, shipwrecked people who find support in the most unlikely of places. A curmudgeonly teacher (Paul Giamatti) is forced to remain on campus at a New England prep school over Christmas to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go; as the days pass\, the grumpy prof forms an unexpected bond with smart-but-troubled student Angus (Dominic Sessa) and the school’s head cook Mary (Da’Vine Joy Randolph). The result is a surprisingly engaging and really rather sweet Christmas comedy-drama.

SUMMARY:Tajouj: dir Gadalla Gubara (1977)
DESCRIPTION:The first feature film to be directed by a Sudanese filmmaker\, this historical romance tells of the beautiful Tajouj whose cousin publicly declares his love for her in a song. The traditions of the tribe decry such an act and his proposal of marriage is initially refused – but he apologises\, and the marriage is finally allowed. In the meantime\, however\, another suitor has appeared with tragic consequences … \nScreens as part of a monthly film programme in Efie’s Rekord Gallery tracing the intertwined histories of African and Arab Liberation Cinema: “through a carefully curated selection of films\, the series interrogates how revolutionary aesthetics\, political struggle\, and the diasporic imagination have shaped\, and continue to shape\, the language of cinema across continents”. The festival will be showing four of Saab’s films: Dunia\, Kiss Me Not on the Eyes (2005); Once Upon a Time in Beirut (1995); South Lebanon: The Story of a Village under Siege (1976); and Les Femmes palestiniennes (Palestinian Women) (1974). A special discussion panel features filmmaker\, producer and researcher Mohanad Yaqubi with Mathilde Rouxel\, President of the Jocelyne Saab Association. \nNew this year is First Takes\, organised by Sharjah Art Foundation in collaboration with AUS\, MYUAD\, the University of Sharjah\, and Zayed University. SUMMARY:My Driver and I: dir Ahd Kamel (2024)
DESCRIPTION:The last in NYUAD Arts Center’s fall film season\, a series which explores history\, identity\, and belonging through Arab and international cinema\, while offering audiences the chance to engage directly with filmmakers is inspired by the childhood of Saudi writer-director-producer Ahd Kamel. Set in Jeddah in the 1980s and 90s\, the film traces the unlikely friendship between a rebellious Saudi teenager and her Sudanese driver\, capturing the ways independence and belonging are negotiated in everyday life. He drives her in a car\, but ultimately enables her to take the wheel of her own life’s journey. \nKamel said\, “My Driver and I is my most personal film\, an act of remembrance and gratitude. It’s about friendship that transcends social roles\, about love that hides in everyday moments\, and about the silent bonds that shape us long after the person is gone. In telling this story\, I wanted to honour Mohi\, my driver\, who was never just that – he was family\, he was home.” \nThe screening will be followed by a live conversation with Kamel.

SUMMARY:The Wind Will Carry Us: dir Abbas Kiarostami (1999)
