DESCRIPTION:This moving animated feature was deservedly selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. The story centres on a woodcutter and his family; they find a small girl in the forest who has been thrown from a moving train. The train is heading to Auschwitz\, and she was thrown to some kind of safety by her father … The film is adapted from a 2019 novel by French author and playwright Jean-Claude Grumberg\, about which one reviewer said: “It is difficult … to write a work of fiction about the Holocaust that is original; even simply in this sense\, Grumberg’s work succeeds where many have failed”. DESCRIPTION:As part of its current SILA: All That Is Left To You exhibition\, Maraya Art Centre is hosting two film screenings that extend the exhibition’s exploration of Palestinian memory\, resistance\, and cultural legacy. Carol Mansour’s documentary features 12 Palestinian women living in Lebanon\, Jordan and Palestine\, who draw upon the ancient and enduring art of Palestinian embroidery to share stories about their identities\, tales of resistance and memories of their homeland. As lawyers\, artists\, housewives\, activists\, architects and politicians\, each recounts a distinctly personal story; through the course of the film a collective embroidery begins to take shape\, linking one woman to another.

The protagonist Abdulaziz Al Tunaiji trains camels for the nation’s most anticipated race\, while two generations ponder whether they will be the last of the Bedouins … \nThis premiere marks the beginning of the film’s regional and international release. \nThe screening will be followed by a conversation with filmmaker Danish Farhan and protagonist Abdelaziz Alteneiji on storytelling as preservation and how unrecorded histories can speak to the present\, with Sara Al Mheiri\, curator and author of Under the Ghaf Tree\, joining as a guest panellist.
