SUMMARY:Alle reden übers Wetter | Talking about the weather: dir Annika Pinske (2022)
DESCRIPTION:Writer-director Annika Pinske’s debut feature tells the story of Clara\, a middle-aged college lecturer and doctoral candidate who seems somewhat uncomfortable with her life in Berlin.  That gets put into focus when she pays a weekend visit to her hometown in rural East Germany with her 15-year-old daughter to celebrate her mother 60th birthday; there’s a stark contrast between the pacey\, urban\, moneyed city existence and a folksy\, economically challenged village where life is comparatively simple. The differences in atmosphere and attitudes are palpable. So which of these alternatives is more fulfilling? \nThe film (in German with English subtitles) screens as part of the now-annual NAAS Film Festival\, a collaboration between several international cultural institutions in the UAE that each year it brings independent films to the UAE with socially relevant themes. This year’s is ‘Family Reel: Celebrating the Year of the Family’ – a selection of films that highlight the diversity\, strength\, and significance of familial relationships.

SUMMARY:The Count of Monte Cristo: dir Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de La Patellière (2024)
DESCRIPTION:This new screen adaptation of the Dumas novel premiered at last year’s Festival de Cannes. The critics liked it: The New York Times called it “stirringly acted and gorgeously filmed” and said “this swashbuckler leaves previous versions of Dumas’s famous revenge saga in the dust”. The Guardian rated it 4/5\, noting it was “directed with verve and acted with gusto”. It certainly rocks along: the original novel is a sprawling episodic adventure\, and somehow this version manages to make it feel pacy and engaging. The story in brief:  Edmond Dantès\, a young sailor betrayed and falsely imprisoned on the day of his wedding\, is jailed for years in the Château d’If where a fellow prisoner reveals the truth behind his downfall. He learns of a fortune that he can access\, escapes from the island fortress in a classically unlikely fashion\, establishes a new identity\, and proceeds to tack down those who destroyed his life in a powerful story of justice\, transformation\, and revenge … \nIn French with English subtitles. Screens in the Louvre Abu Dhabi Auditorium as part of Cannes Film Nights\, a curated programme of acclaimed films shown at Cannes and presented in collaboration with the Institut Français.

SUMMARY:Sentimental Value: dir Joachim Trier (2025)
DESCRIPTION:Winner of the Grand Prix at the Festival de Cannes\, followed by the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film and BAFTA recognition\, this is something of a masterpiece from Trier: the Rotten Tomatoes summary is to the point – “deftly exploring the uneasy tension between artistic expression and personal connection\, Sentimental Value is a bracingly mature work from writer-director Joachim Trier that’s marvellously acted across the board”. The story  centres on sisters Nora and Agnes as they reunite with their estranged father\, Gustav\, a once‑celebrated filmmaker seeking a return to relevance. When Gustav offers Nora a role in his new film and she refuses\, the casting of a young Hollywood star reopens old wounds. What follows is a delicate family reckoning shaped by unresolved loyalties\, resentment\, and the fragile possibility of reconciliation … \nIn Norwegian with English subtitles. SUMMARY:Flow: dir Gints Zilbalodis (2024)
DESCRIPTION:An absolutely stunning low-budget (and largely handmade) antidote to Disneyfication – a wordless animated fable about a cat reluctantly making friends with a dog\, a ring-tailed lemur\, a capybara and a secretary bird in a post-apocalyptic world. There’s a strong message about survival\, trust\, and finding connection at the end of the world; but the visuals and the drama are what really grab the senses. It deservedly won an Oscar. \nScreens in the Louvre Abu Dhabi Auditorium as part of Cannes Film Nights\, a curated programme of acclaimed films shown at Cannes and presented in collaboration with the Institut Français.
