SUMMARY:SFP Montage: day one
DESCRIPTION:SFP Montage is a series of special projects and initiatives linked to Sharjah Arts Foundation’s annual Sharjah Film Platform (SFP) festival that forges new associations among the works and expands their reach beyond Sharjah; two award-winning films from the seventh edition of SFP will be screened at NYUAD: The Screening Room on each of 3 and 4 May. Tomorrow’s films are fiction; this evening’s are both documentaries: \nSurveilling a Crime Scene dir Alana Hunt (2023\, 22 min) \nShot on Super 8mm\, this short examines the lives of non-indigenous people in Miriwoong Country\, Australia\, to frame colonisation as not only a historical phenomenon but also a continuous and present violence. English with Arabic subtitles \nCoconut Head Generation dir Alain Kassanda (2023\, 89 min: still above) \nEvery Thursday a group of students from the University of Ibadan organises a film club\, transforming a small lecture hall into a political assembly. Reclaiming the expression ‘coconut head generation’ – a derisive term for stubborn and brainless youth – the students assert their right to intellectual freedom while honing their critical voice. English\, Pidgin\, Yoruba and French with Arabic subtitles

SUMMARY:Collected Histories: Personal Archives and Documentation
DESCRIPTION:Collected Histories\, a project co-founded by Hind Mezaina and Jasmine Soliman\, aims to foster discussion on personal documentation and archiving “with an ultimate goal of inspiring and supporting individuals to become ‘citizen archivists’ by cataloguing\, and exploring ways to self-publish and preserve personal collections”. The project includes talks\, workshops\, and public film screenings – which this evening includes all three. \nFilms\nFour short films focused on archives\, memories\, and identity followed by a short discussion between Mezaina\, Soliman and the audience. \nBetween Delicate and Violent dir Şirin Bahar Demirel (2023\, 15 min) Experimental documentary that considers hands as memory places that can both accumulate and transfer memories – what some artists call “hand memory\,” triggered when they begin painting\, sculpting\, or drawing and retained in the body rather than the brain … \nMy Father dir Pegah Ahangarani Farahanilran (2023\, 19 min) A personal essay from the director\, examining the life of her father as a revolutionary filmmaker and activist in Iran and the impact of the execution of his friend Davood … \nAt Home But Not At Home dir Suneil Sanzgiri (2019\, 11 min) An experimental essay about anti-colonial solidarity\, based on the story of the director’s father and his Goan heritage to question the construction of artifice\, memory\, and identity through the moving image. \nRankin Street\, 1953 dir Naeem Mohaieman (2013\, 8 min) Mohaiemen’s projects all revolve around modern history\, with a particular focus on South Asia and the 1970s. Merging personal and national histories\, Mohaiemen explores the gaps in historical memory. \nWorkshop\nThe workshop will explore the importance of archival self-representation\, the objects we keep and why.  Attendees should bring at least one item from their personal archive – family photos\, letters\, diaries\, heirlooms. This event is open to all\, and no prior knowledge about archival practice is required.

The film questions the role of image-making as a tool of both testimony and violence when connected to entanglements between people and the land. \nWorkshop\nThe workshop will explore the importance of archival self-representation\, the objects we keep and why.  Attendees should bring at least one item from their personal archive – family photos\, letters\, diaries\, heirlooms. SUMMARY:La Cité de la peur / Fear City: dir Alain Berberian (1993)
DESCRIPTION:Odile Deray\, a small time public relations executive\, has her work cut out for her – getting some exposure for a pretty terrible small-budget horror movie called Red is Dead. Then she gets a break: the projectionist is murdered\, just as in the film … and more follow\, identical to those in Red is Dead\, and taking place at the Cannes Festival ! Add in a corrupt politician\, a bodyguard for the lead actor who is more interested in girls than his client\, a police superintendent who can’t handle the press … Full of insider references\, this zany satire about the world of cinema and the Festival de Cannes in particular should make for a fun evening. In French\, with English subtitles; and AF members get in free\, while the rest of us pay AED 35. \n

SUMMARY:A Life on Tape / Bilder (m)einer Mutter: dir Melanie Lischker (1921)
DESCRIPTION:Melanie Lischker’s documentary reconstructs the life of her mother (who she barely remembers) from over 100 hours of Super 8 and video footage that was meticulously recorded over the decades\, mostly by her father. The result is the poignant story of a young woman who was never able to fully accept her role as a mother as she tried to free herself from the old thought patterns of her rather authoritarian parents in the 1970s. Her ongoing struggle between a desire for freedom and the imperatives of a well-ordered family life have affected the childhood of the director\, her daughter … Both personally and politically\, the film travels through the decades and shows a woman in conflict with the patriarchal structures of her day. \nThis film screens in the NAAS: She Reel series\, a collaboration between several cultural institutions in the UAEwhich has the subtitle ‘Women in Society: Stories That Inspire\, Change That Empowers’. The films in the programme are dedicated to showcasing women’s stories and raising awareness about their roles in our lives.

SUMMARY:Les Quatre Cents Coups | The 400 Blows: dir François Truffaut (1959)
DESCRIPTION:Truffaut’s largely autobiographical coming-of-age drama is the classic French New Wave film and utterly unmissable. In the first of many appearances with the director\, Jean-Pierre Léaud is a misunderstood 13-year-old living in a small\, uncomfortable Parisian apartment with his mother\, a sullen woman who doesn’t love him\, and the man who gave him his name but isn’t his father. As he grows older\, Antoine becomes increasingly unable to tolerate his situation and dreams of a better future. Petty theft and skipping school eventually leads him to court and then to a centre for troubled youths near the sea. He escapes and runs to the ocean\, which he has always wanted to see; he turns and looks at the camera in one of cinema’s finest final frames … \nIn French with English subtitles. SUMMARY:L'histoire de Souleymane | The Story of Souleymane: dir Boris Lojkine (2024)
DESCRIPTION:Souleymane is an asylum-seeker with two days to prepare for the interview that will determine his residence permit status. As he pedals through the streets of Paris delivering meals\, he relates his story; it’s one of violence and survival – but not in the way that the immigration interview requires. As the clock tuicks down\, the pace and the tension both pick up … Social realism story-telling at its best\, with elements of a gripping thriller. The film won the Jury Prize at Cannes 2024\, and Abou Sangaré received the Best Actor Award in the Un Certain Regard section. \nIn French with English subtitles. SUMMARY:Making of: dir Cédric Kahn (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Cinema has always been very interested in itself. In Cédric Kahn’s Making of we are introduced to a movie\, a story about workers fighting to protect their factory from being relocated. And we meet a variety of characters involved in it – there is the director (Denis Podalydes) who can’t seem to get everything into place\, the producer (Emmanuelle Bercot) who wants to rewrite the ending and cut the budget\, the veteran lead actor (Jonathan Cohen) who is a diva on set\,and the budding director (Stefan Crepon) who has been commissioned to shoot a behind-the-scenes ‘making of’ documentary. \nThe result makes for a satisfyingly complex fly-on-the-wall comedy\, with a large ensemble cast of French actors having fun with the long list of roles. There’s a nod to social topics too; the issues discussed in the film-within-a-film – underpaid workers\, torn labourers\, possibilities of losing work – all mirror the stressed film crew trying to just finish this production. And it’s timely\, given the strikes that have been going on in Hollywood recently … \nIn French with English subtitles. AF members pay AED 25\, the rest of us pay AED 35. \n
