SUMMARY:Tanweer Sacred Music Festival
DESCRIPTION:Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi’s latest initiative is a three day festival (24-26 November) that aims to rediscover and celebrate traditional sacred music. Envisioned as “a testament to tradition\, wisdom\, and the power of togetherness”\, it “aims to bring people closer to heritage\, diverse cultures\, and to each other.” \nIt’s not just music; there will be “immersive art installations\, an indigenous craft-market\, wholesome cuisines\, as well as mind and body wellness activities and workshops” (yoga\, breathwork meditation\, and Zikr are mentioned). The music comes with laser projections on to the dunes and mountains to create “a visual and auditory spectacle that will leave all in attendance in awe”. \nThe line-up includes … \n\nNawa Band\, founded in 2009 by Ibrahim Muslimani in Aleppo\, performs sacred and secular compositions of Muwashahat and Qudud\, particularly forgotten masterpieces from the 20th century.\nFanna-Fi-Allah celebrated traditional Sufi Qawwali ensemble\nPeia and Band Peia Luzzi\, an American-born song collector and multi-instrumentalist\, draws inspiration from Irish and Old World European folk music\nDhafer Youssef The Tunisian singer and oud player discovered jazz during his schooldays. He’s made six albums that exhibit his love for Indian and Nordic rhythms\nMaria Coman A singer with a deep passion for Orthodox Byzantine music\nKhusugtun Classical Mongolian folk music\, blending traditional instruments with Mongolian khoomei/huumii (throat singing)\nRodrigo Rodriguez\, born in Argentina and raised in Spain\, is a master of both classical Spanish guitar and the traditional Japanese Shakuhachi flute. His compositions span New Age\, World Music\, and Contemporary genres\n\nAnd on the wellness side: \n\nKino MacGregor is the entreprenoeurial yoga enthusiast behind the pioneering yoga TV network Omstars\nMaster Can\, apparently a 34th generation Shaolin warrior monk\, will share the wisdom of QiGong and martial arts\nLina Nahhas is an Arab-Canadian based in Dubai will be using movement and “the nourishing energy of her dynamic practice” to “set spirits free and ground them in the present”\nFarima Berenji\, Iranian-American dance ethnologist and Yarsan Sufi Master\, will share her uniquely spiritual and healing renditions of the ancient and sacred dances of Persia\n\nDay passes are AED 554 (or AED 1\,030 for Golden Circle access)\, three-day passses are AED 1\,497 or AED 2\,780 respectively. They don’t include anything other than access to the stages. \nTanweer’s organisers are keen to emphasise the location\, Sharjah’s Mleiha desert\, by offering “meaningful add-ons” like camping under the stars\, horse riding\, and moon gazing. There will also be guided excursions to Jebel Buhais and the rather good Mleiha Archaeological Centre.

SUMMARY:Alserkal Art Week
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Alserkal Art Week runs from Monday 20 November to Sunday 26 November at Alserkal Avenue. It’s been refocussed at short notice on Gaza and related issues\, in particular with a major exhibition in Concrete. The full programme is here\, but we’ve picked out some highlights; most events are free but many require preregistration because space will be limited. \n\n20 Nov 5pm to 10pm Alserkal Lates \nThere are more than 15 new gallery exhibitions across the Avenue staying open into the evening\, along a couple of guest galleries which will be open for the week – Gazelli Art House in warehouse 45\, Iris Projects in warehouse46. (We have these listed individually by exhibition name in the Agenda.) The residents of the Fall 2023 cycle at Alserkal Arts Foundation will also be hosting open studios\, and the retail and F&B outlets will be open late\, too. Alserkal Lates is always a pleasure. \n\n20-26 Nov 10am to midnight On This Land  \nA “triangulated response” by the Palestinian Museum\, Barjeel Art Foundation\, and Alserkal Arts Foundation\, this exhibition actually opens at 6pm on the evening before; it brings together the digital archive of The Palestinian Museum and works from the Barjeel Art Foundation’s collection with the aim of “harnessing the power of spontaneous collaboration not only to protect what is being silenced\, but to generate a triangulated and amplified response … [the exhibition] opens an unexpected window onto Gaza to prompt a collective imagination of a possible future through the prism of a past made manifest.”. There are guided tours of the exhibition at 3.30pm every day. \n\n20 Nov 5pm 6pm 7pm | 25 Nov 7.30pm 8.30pm | 26 Nov 6pm 7pm Slow art walks \nReflective gallery tours that last about an hour; a really successful way to see the galleries – interesting\, informative\, unstressy. \n\n20 Nov 9-10pm Farha \nDirected by Darin J. Sallam\, this coming-of-age film was based on a true story of a 14-year-old girl caught up in the events of the nabka. Screens in The Yard courtesy of Cinema Akil. \n\n20 and 26 Nov 7pm RHYME: Sima Dance Company  \nA 30-minute performance described as “a theatrical laboratory” and choreographed by Sima’s artistic director Alaa Krimed\, RHYME shows Arab and Eastern culture heritage through an artistic lens. Music\, narration and movement “translates its melodic and experimental character in a dynamic performance”. \n\n22 Nov 7.30-9pm Gaza Mon Amour \nDirected by Arab & Tarzan Nasser\, this film was Palestine’s official submission to the Oscars in 2019; based on a true story\, it’s a charming\, reflective film about 60-year-old Gazan fisherman Issa and his secret love for the dressmaker Siham. Screens in The Yard courtesy of Cinema Akil. \n\n23 Nov 4pm to 6.30pm Majlis Talks \nTitled Fierce Grace\, curated by Mari Spirito of Protocinema\, these five 30-minute sessions will see conversations with curator Duygu Demir\, artist Stéphanie Saadé\, artist Marianne Fahmy\, and author Kaya Genc. Topics range from attention to the overlooked details of life (like the skin cells left on our phone’s touch screen)\, to unlearning social conditioning\, futurism on rising seas\, invisibility as a means of survival\, and interconnecting across geographies. \n\n25 Nov 8pm-9.10pm Foragers \nShot in the Golan Heights\, the Galilee and Jerusalem\, Jumana Manna’s film uses fiction\, documentary and archival footage to depict the dramas around the traditional practice of foraging for wild edible plants\, deploying wry humour and a meditative pace to portray the impact of Israeli nature protection laws on these customs. SUMMARY:Sharjah International Film Festival for Children and Youth (SIFF)
DESCRIPTION:SIFF is back for its tenth edition on 22 to 28 October with an official selection of 81 films from 37 countries (slightly down on last year\, which saw 90+ from 47 countries). But “the new edition promises to exceed audience expectations” said Sheikha Jawaher Bint Abdullah Al Qasimi\, SIFF’s director\, in her press statement; certainly there will be three world premieres and no fewer than 53 Middle East premieres. \nThere are screenings in seven categories\, all competitive – Student Films\, GCC Short Films\, International Shorts\, Animations\, Animated Features\, and Feature Films. There’s also a Green Carpet platform which will offer audiences the chance to see films (four of them) with a director’s Q&A; there are also eight talks and ‘open discussions’. \nWe can’t currently tell you much more than that; the website does list what films are being shown and when\, but otherwise it’s largely bereft of useful information and clearly has some very outdated pages (including the director’s message\, which still refers to the online-only Festival of 2021). Apparently ticket prices are the normal charges for Vox films and you can book them online via the Vox website as usual; the main location is Vox City Centre Al Zahia but we understand Mirdif City Centre and City Centre Ajman will have the screenings as well. \nAbove: still from Titina\, dir Kajsa Naess (Norway/Belgium\, 2022)

SUMMARY:Festival X
DESCRIPTION:This is the second edition of a festival that described itself as “the point of intersection between art\, technology and the community … The main goal is to attract and create a community of open minded artists\, scientists\, and tech experts to come together and share knowledge”. It also aims to promote an alternative to “the ‘entertainment-only’ lifestyle in Dubai”. \nThat was for the original festival\, which ran back in 2022 with some success. The upcoming version tomes down the rhetoric somewhat but retains a strapline of ‘arts / technology / science’ and adds an overlay of community. The UAE is seen as “a special ecosystem in which people and their culture\, tools\, and relationship with nature form a special alliance … This raises the question of how this complex life situation can be artistically reflected and what artistic forms of expression and tools can emerge from it … The contemporary form of media art\, which engages with a society shaped by new technologies and the associated risks and opportunities\, is presented …” \nThe organisers say their goal is to promote a local artistic community through this future-oriented art form” “inspired by the dynamics of the region’s unique circumstances\, a distinct dialectic of media art will emerge”. \nSounds impressive\, and at the very least Festival X should stimulate thought if not action. It runs for three days in Alserkal Avenue\, with Exhibitions of curated installations and projects with the title  ‘From the past we love\, to the future we need’ in Alserkal Avenue’s Concrete and Warehouse 46; a couple of Workshops; Performances in the evening on all three days; and a short programme of panel discussions. \nThe workshops are by new media artist Amir Bastan (“An Astrolabe for Computational Arts”\, 10am on all three days) and James Kelly from NYUAD (active sound researcher/performer\, vinyl enthusiast\, and responsible for the interesting Phonography show back in February; his workshop is repeated on two days only). The performance schedule also looks interesting – they include a total of five sessions by James Kelly again\, immersive AV installations from Italian artist Michela Pelusio\, soundscapes by Safeya Alblooshi from NYUAD\, and the very cool Sahar Homami who creates real-time visual content “at the intersection of art\, technology\, philosophy\, and mysticism”. \nThe panels and presentations look to be more of a mixed bag\, with a Keynote session on two days followed by a panel. The keynotes are two hours of bite-size contributions from individuals and organisations apparently without a specific theme\, and they range from educational institutions like DIDI\, VCUarts Qatar\, and NYUAD through local business-oriented organisations like PwC Middle East and Dubai Economy & Tourism to thought leaders Ars Electronica and Alserkal Avenue (the original inspiration for Festival X does apparently come largely from Ars Electronica\, an Austrian new media art institute which also runs a similar “festival for art\, technology and society“). \nThat leaves two panels\, both of which seem to us to be a little underserved timewise and slightly baffling in their choice of subject. There’s only 45 minutes for the first\, ‘How to Create a Connection Between Tradition\, Innovation and Vision’ with which has contributions from Ars Electronica\, Alserkal Avenue\, Dubai Future Foundation\, Dubai Department of Economy & Tourism Dubai\, and PwC MiddleEast. The moderator is Olof Van Winden\, Founder and Director of TodaysArt Festival (maybe we’ll get to hear whether the Festival will be returning in its original format). And on the final day there’s what looks like another meaty topic with only an hour allowed for it; we think the subject is ‘The University Portal: Fast Forward To The Future And Back’\, which makes sense given that the panellists come from all those educational bodies (with Amir Bastan as moderator)\, but elsewhere in the website it’s listed as ‘How Media Artists Can Shape the Future’. \nThe best news is that it’s all free\, though you do have to pre-register for individual sessions presumably to give the organisers a chance to manage numbers. \n

DESCRIPTION:The new season’s first open-all-evening mini-festival at Alserkal Avenue. It’s the mix as before\, only more so – the galleries are staying open late\, most with brand new shows\, and so are the eateries and coffee shops. But added to that is a collection of “soundscapes\, multimedia exhibitions\, and live music performance” for “an evening of cultural discovery”. \nThis year the Yard will be home to new botanical and architectural features – greening by Zain Masud\, architecture by T.Sakhi – to celebrate local craftsmanship and rediscover native plants. A specially commissioned soundscape by Safeya Alblooshi (“an immersive sonic creation that intricately weaves together the past\, present\, and potential future of The Yard”) will also be revealed on the night. \nProgramming will take place throughout the evening with free music from the rather good The Tasty Biscuits performing in The Yard at 7pm and the excellent Majaz in The Fridge Warehouse at 8.30pm; a series of Slow Art Walks touring around some of the art exhibitions; the oldest waterhole cam in Africa (Djuma Private Game Reserve) and the world Wild Earth on the Yard’s new screens; and a world music-Arabic Folk open venue concert at The Fridge.
