DESCRIPTION:Dawood’s New Dream Machine Project centres on a 3m-high rotating and flickering light sculpture\, an homage to artist and writer Brion Gysin’s Dreamachine; driving the mechanism is a perforated cylinder emitting pulses of light at the frequency of the brain’s alpha waves\, said to induce altered states of consciousness. Originally commissioned for the Abraaj Group Art Prize in 2011 and first presented at Art Dubai that same year\, the work is part of the Art Jameel Collection and has rarely been exhibited since. \nHere the sculpture is presented alongside two smaller Recyclages prototypes and archival materials tracing the project’s history.

DESCRIPTION:This Artist’s Room traces forty years of Walid Siti’s practice\, including new sculptural commissions and material from the artist’s studio. Across his body of work\, structural forms mirror geological formations\, rising summits\, Mesopotamian ziggurats\, and the Tower of Babel\, all alluding to a persistent\, often reckless\, human drive toward ascension. A newly commissioned large-scale sculpture\, Registry of the Lived\, reflects on the troubled history of Kurdistan\, displayed alongside the War Series\, an early ensemble of drawings and etchings from the 1980s made during Siti’s years of exile.

DESCRIPTION:Bani Abidi’s Artist’s Room displays a single body of work\, Trembling hands (2024) – a series of portraits of artists\, journalists\, politicians\, lawyers\, doctors and civil society leaders who publicly spoke out against the genocide of Palestinians\, often using public platforms that exposed them to backlash\, censorship or repression. Drawn in 2024\, the portraits primarily refer to speeches made in late 2023 and early 2024 during the most brutal and deadly period of the Israeli onslaught on Gaza\, also characterised by widespread international inaction. Some of the speakers depicted by Abidi are Palestinian; others spoke in solidarity.
