DESCRIPTION:Christie’s first live auction of fine art in Abu Dhabi takes place on 1 November\, preceded by two viewing days open to all. There will be more than 70 works from six decades of museum-quality art that traces the evolution of artistic practices across the Middle East and North Africa. \nHighlights include … \nPaul Guiragossian\, Noces (1958-59) A vibrant wedding scene that reflects Guiragossian’s enduring themes of home\, community and human connection; the work was exhibited at his first major exhibition in Lebanon in 1959. Estimate: $300\,000-500\,000 \nSamia Halaby\, Yesterday (1978) An important work from Samia Halaby’s 1970s\, when the Palestinian-American artist forged her distinctive language of geometric abstraction. Estimate: $200\,000-300\,000 \nMohamed Melehi\, A30 (1962: right) From Mohamed Melehi’s seminal 1960–62 series of ‘black works’\, reflecting his experimentation with the bianco e nero technique and his engagement with Zen and Sufi. Estimate:$100\,000-150\,000 \nNadia Saikali\, Mandala Bleu Nuit (1982) From an important mature phase of Saikali’s work\, characterised by its meditative and spiritual abstraction. Four other works from the Barjeel Art Foundation are also offered in the sale.  Estimate: $30\,000-50\,000 \nMarwan Kassab-Bachi\, Kopf (Head) (1987) A pivotal moment in the evolution of Marwan’s portraiture\, moving from the horizontally stretched facial landscapes of the 1970s towards the vertical\, frontal heads that became a defining motif of his mature practice. Estimate: $200\,000-300\,000 \nInji Efflatoun\, Untitled (1987) One of Inji Efflatoun’s last works\, representing the culmination of the Egyptian modernist’s practice\, characterised by a lyrical synthesis of nature and the built environment through expressive colour and line. One of eight works from the Dalloul Collection offered in the auction. DESCRIPTION:This group show is the culmination of the second edition of NIKA Project Space’s Open Studio programme: four artists based in the UAE were invited to develop new bodies of work in dialogue with the space\, one another\, and the public. Curated by Rahel Aima\,  the exhibition brings together projects developed during the residency themed around the observer effect – “in which a wave becomes a particle and the body becomes a tongue through ritual\, accumulation\, and the heat of the eye … Rather than producing works in response to a prescribed theme\, the participating artists continued investigations proposed during the Open Studio application process. Over the course of the residency\, these projects evolved through experimentation\, research\, conversation\, and material exploration\, offering a glimpse into artistic practice as an unfolding process”.

DESCRIPTION:Stephan Kaluza’s practice is fundamentally concerned with depictions of nature\, either as hyper-realistic oils or near-abstract renderings. These two modes of painting should be seen as different stages of the same subject in a process of transformation: disruptions creep in\, and appearances prove deceptive. Says the gallery: “At first glance\, the paintings appear to be precise\, almost preservative images of an intact world – until a second layer emerges\, sharply challenging what is being seen”.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Oussama Diab: Reimagined
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the Palestinian-Syrian-Dutch artist that reinterprets celebrated masterpieces from Western art. Diab revisits iconic works by artists including Picasso\, van Gogh\, Michelangelo and van Dyck\, applying his own distinctive visual language to allow the images to speak to contemporary realities. Highlights of the exhibition are two striking reinterpretations of Picasso’s ‘Guernica’\, alongside ‘La Coiffure’ also after Picasso\, two sunflower paintings inspired by van Gogh\, and reinterpretations of Anthony van Dyck’s ‘Jupiter and Antiope’ and ‘Moses and the Serpent’.
