SUMMARY:Fertile Dreams
DESCRIPTION:The group show brings together artists from the MENA region and its diaspora whose practices engage fertility as a generative force tied to questions of origin\, transformation\, and the cycles that govern land and self. Across drawing\, painting\, ceramics\, textiles\, and installation\, they turn to rhythmic repetition as a shared method of accessing unconscious and symbolic worlds; rooted in Surrealist philosophy yet resonant with the mystic patterns of Middle Eastern spiritual traditions\, their works open passages between body and land\, spirit and matter\, dream and physicality. \nTo 2 January.

SUMMARY:Rays\, Ripples\, Residue
DESCRIPTION:This major exhibition marks the ten-year anniversary of 421 Arts Campus via a chance to reflect on emergent artistic practices in the UAE\, their possibilities\, and challenges for the future. Featuring video\, performance\, installation\, and multimedia works\, it invites conversations around what it means to produce art in the UAE today from the vantage point of emerging artists\, collectives\, and grassroots initiatives\, to the influential role of cultural institutions that have supported and platformed these practices. \nIt’s realised through three curatorial perspectives\, all with time as a central theme: \nMunira Al Sayegh’s Leading to the Middle draws on the nature of expansion found within a ripple effect\, tracing the influence of key actors whose contributions have created lasting reverberations. Featured artists include Mohammed Ahmed Ibrahim\, Tarek Al-Ghoussein\, Bait15\, Adele Bea Cipste\, Khaled Esguerra\, Lamya Gargash\, and Auguste Nomeiakaite. \nIn Ghosts of Arrival\, Nadine Khalil meditates on the layered experience of arriving after a time of artistic ferment\, risk-taking\, and a now-mythologized energy that shaped cultural production in the UAE from the early 2000s to the mid-2010s. Rather than restaging or romanticizing the past\, Khalil proposes that the memory of risk itself becomes a material\, informing art-making and exhibition-building in the present. Featured artists include Tarek Al-Ghoussein\, Mona Ayyash and Nadine Ghandour\, Lucinda Childs\, Maria Daher\, Sarah Daher\, Cristalina Parra\, Bait Juma\, Hashel Lamki\, Sara Naim\, and Isaac Sullivan. \nMurtaza Vali’s SUN gathers artworks created and exhibited since 2015 that revolve around the idea and experience of the sun. Her section presents a nuanced view of the sun as a mediated and commodified presence – at once image\, data\, brand\, vibe\, and produc\, revealing the contradictions embedded in narratives of modernity and progress. Featured artists include Charbel-joseph H. Boutros\, Khalid Jauffer\, Raja’a Khalid\, Nima Nabavi\, Pratchaya Phinthong\, Sa Tahanan Co. (Jandri Angelo Aguilor\, Farah Fawzi Ali\, Preschelle Ann Bigueras\, Anna Bernice delos Reyes\, Alexandra Chaves\, Niño Consorte\, John Gatapia\, Balaram Ochangco\, Augustine Paredes\, Nicolas Roa)\, Shazia Salam\, and Lantian Xie. \nWhile all distinct in approach\, each section has a shared focus on the minor pivots rather than major inflection points. A look at overlooked gestures that accumulated over time\, Rays\, Ripples\, Residue illustrates the impact of subtle shifts that have shaped the past decade of art-making and exhibition building. It also sets the tone for the next decade of 421 and the UAE’s growing arts ecosystem\, asking what ideas will still carry forward into the next decade? \nTo 26 April.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Abdelkader Benchamma: Rumors from the Skies
DESCRIPTION:For his third solo exhibition here\, the French-Algerian artist has taken inspiration from Kometenbuch (The Comet Book)\, a 16th-century Flemish treatise depicting comets and fantastical apparitions; Benchamma suggests how astronomy and astrology\, science and folklore\, continue to overlap in shaping our perception of the cosmos via a new body of intricate ink drawings and landscapes . Meteorites\, crying stones\, and shooting stars drift across forests and horizons\, hovering between recognition and mystery; there’s also a monumental mural paired with a projected animation that extends this vision into immersive territory\, opening onto swirling\, otherworldly sequences of light\, texture\, and form.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Mahmoud El Safadi: Personal Sea
DESCRIPTION:Exhibiting for the first time in Dubai\, Lebanese artist Mahmoud El Safadi is showing a collection of miniature paintings on playing cards\, a series of works that reflect on the Mediterranean as a site of memory\, inheritance\, and continuity – “a littoral space that is at once connective and exclusionary\, communal and privatised\, fluid and heavily policed”. Referencing the card game ‘quatorze’\, Safadi layers imagery across the cards to create “a visual palimpsest where personal and inherited memory converge with broader histories of struggle\, surveillance\, and belonging”.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Sophie-Yen Bretez: The Unsaid Remains Remembered
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition by Paris-based artist Sophie-Yen Bretez for a new body of work that captures moments when one space becomes another\, when times overlap\, and when memory persists as life shifts forward. This “dramaturgy of passage” is expressed through bold\, large-scale compositions and shaped canvases. As she notes: “Silence is never empty – it holds presence\, remnants endure\, and memory lingers in objects\, rituals\, and landscapes”.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Afra Al Dhaheri: Restless Circle
DESCRIPTION:A selection of works by Afra Al Dhaheri that explore the structural effects of tension\, repetition and time provides Sharjah Art Foundation’s first show of Autumn. “Working with materials such as cotton rope\, fabric\, cement and hair\, the artist emphasises slow gestures\, intentional movements and the fatigue that can build from ongoing\, repetitive and even invisible labour …” \nThe exhibition’s title comes from a newly commissioned installation with the same name; that draws inspiration from desert plants that create spiral patterns in the sand as they move with the wind. For Afra Al Dhaheri\, this offers a metaphor for mental exhaustion and collective burnout\, the sense of being endlessly pushed to produce or perform: “in other works\, repetition emerges as a condition of making\, a method shaped by the interplay of tension\, weight and the ongoing rhythm of doing and undoing”.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Marwan Bassiouni: New Western Views (Preview)
DESCRIPTION:This first solo exhibition in the region for Bassiouni offers a first look at an ongoing international project that reframes landscape photography through the lens of lived Muslim presence in the contemporary West. Each of these photographs – taken from inside mosques across the Netherlands\, Switzerland\, and the UK – centres on a window\, an aperture on to the outside world that is rarely found in purpose-built mosques. Through them we glimpse familiar Western landscapes: traffic junctions\, supermarkets\, apartment blocks\, sports fields. But these views are framed by examples of Islamic visual culture – patterned tiles\, rugs\, wooden minbars\, and more. \nNew Western Views is a counterpoint to a long history of Orientalist image-making. Bassiouni’s landscapes are no longer the backdrop for conquest\, curiosity\, or romanticisation; they are simply what exists outside the mosque window. In doing so\, the work avoids the familiar tropes of victimhood or spectacle …

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Lala Rukh: The importance of staying quiet
DESCRIPTION:The first exhibition of the new iteration of The importance of staying quiet\, a survey of Pakistani art\, features photographic archives from Lala Rukh’s years at the University of Chicago (1974-76). It includes early works that carry a cinematic sense of composition before arriving at her later language of minimal abstraction\, revealing the sharpening of her framing and the intent of her gaze\, \nUnlike her formal exhibitions\, the Chicago photographs are not minimal or abstract. They contain architecture\, people\, animals\, objects\, and most importantly\, construct narratives; the ‘set’ and direction recall filmic technique. These photos document Lala’s new surroundings and influences as she encountered the art\, music\, and politics that encouraged experimentation …

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Wassef Boutros-Ghali: A Retrospective (1965-2016)
DESCRIPTION:In the canvases of Wassef Boutros-Ghali\, colours informed by a knowledge of unrelenting Mediterranean sunlight flood the flat plane of the canvas; architectural forms emerge\, collide and re-engineer themselves without a narrative. Boutros-Ghali’s art speaks to the pure and unrestricted physicality of painting\, and his compositions reflect a meticulous yet openhearted response to the human condition – marvels of reason buoyed by a lifetime’s worth of lyricism.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Morteza Khosravi: The Floating Table
DESCRIPTION:Influenced by the likes of Lucian Freud and Egon Schiele\, Khosravi’s drawings and paintings suggest that he’s looking for artistic ideas – “for him\, how to encounter pieces is important than pieces itself”. But does have a characteristic style of painting groups of people that appear to be faded photographs; the viewer has the same sense of nostalgia and reminiscence of better times as they would if they were looking at old family photos. It’s a clever device\, inviting a great deal of participation from the viewer …

SUMMARY:Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook: The Bouquet and the Wreath
DESCRIPTION:The acclaimed Thai artist’s first international large-scale survey exhibition brings together works from the last 45 years alongside new commissions. Including performance\, video and installations plus some large-scale sculptures not seen since the 1990s\, the exhibition fills the indoor galleries\, lobby and courtyard of Jameel Arts Centre and showcases Rasdjarmrearnsook’s evolution and ongoing engagement with societal\, philosophical and environmental question. \nFrom flowers and beds to stray dogs and notes\, the exhibition brings to the fore the artist’s enduring preoccupations with desire and mortality\, difference and curiosity\, allowing viewers to tap into layered philosophical questions: What is the purpose of art? What does it mean to be human? As she playfully observes\, “I don’t need to spell out everything that I feel\, do I?” \nConceived by guest curators Kittima Chareeprasit\, curator at Chiang Mai’s MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum (with whom the show is presented) and Roger Nelson\, art historian and curator\, the exhibition is accompanied by a substantial publication featuring perspectives from scholars\, curators\, artists and writers. \nTo 8 March. \nRight: Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook\, Two Planets: Millet’s The Gleaners and the Thai Farmers (single-channel video)

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY The Narrative of Decline
DESCRIPTION:Bernhard Buhmann curates this group show based on the idea that plunging downwards is both terrifying and liberating – the gallery quotes Andrea Roelig: “We stand between death and life\, and decline is dangerously enticing because it also carries an element of seduction”. Given those premises\, this could be an exciting show … \nThe artists: \nTamina Amadyar\nMonika Grabuschnigg\nMonia Ben Hamouda\nRidley Howard\nMaureen Kägi\nClaudia Larcher\nOliver Laric\nNour Malas\nPhilip Mueller\nChristoph Ruckhäberle

SUMMARY:The Poetry of Birds
DESCRIPTION:Following previous editions of this exhibition in Paris and Tokyo\, L’ÉCOLE\, School of Jewelry Arts aims to offer a dialogue between 19th and 20th-century Western jewellery and Islamic arts\, with poetry as the common thread. Jewels\, precious objects\, and gouaché drawings depicting birds from noted jewellers such as Van Cleef & Arpels\, Cartier\, Buccellati\, Boucheron\, Mellerio\, Falize\, Fabergé\, Boivin\, Mauboussin\, Marchak\, Chaumet\, and JAR will be showcased alongside a selection of Middle Eastern works of art\, including carpets\, ceramics\, metalware\, and miniatures mainly notably on loan from the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization and Dubai Museums. \nEmirati artist Faisal Al Rais’s contemporary photography\, showcasing the beauty and profound symbolism of birds\, will also make its public debut as part of the show. Freely inspired by Farid al-Din Attar’s The Conference of the Birds (circa 1117)\, the exhibition is conceived as a poetic experience beginning with poems from renowned poets from the region\, followed by a display of bejewelled bird species including falcons\, and culminating in an aviary of imaginary birds by French jeweller Pierre Sterlé (1905-1978). \n“Birds have long held a sacred place in the cultures of the Middle East — as symbols of freedom\, renewal\, and the human spirit\,” said Marie-Laure Cassius-Duranton\, L’ÉCOLE Senior Exhibition Contents Project Manager. “We wanted to honour that tradition while showcasing how these symbols echo across time and continents through art\, poetry\, and jewellery. This exhibition is not just about beauty\, but about the stories and meanings behind it — how the smallest motif can carry centuries of memory\, emotion\, and craftsmanship.” \nTo 25 April. \nRight: Van Cleef & Arpels\, Eagle brooch (1972)

SUMMARY:Richard Hearns: Threshold
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition by the Lebanese-Irish painter\, born in Beirut and adopted into Ireland to bear a dual heritage that shapes his artistic identity. This\, his first solo exhibition in the UAE\, presents a new body of work that reflects his ongoing exploration of gesture\, memory\, and place. In these canvases\, Hearns engages with the idea of thresholds through imaginary landscapes. Improvisation\, layering\, and revision are integral to his process\, where the presence of pentimento traces of prior marks and decisions becomes visible\, revealing the evolution of thought and movement. \nTo 6 December. \nRight: Richard Hearns\, At the Edge of Knowing I & II (2024/2025)

SUMMARY:Lydia Nakashima Degarrod and Susan Ossman: Projects of Art Ethnography
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition brings together works by two artist-anthropologists with practices on the boundaries between scholarship and art. Their projects invite viewers to reflect on migration\, memory\, identity\, and the ways knowledge takes shape across bodies\, materials\, and stories. \nThe exhibition unfolds in six sections\, each anchored by a distinct project. Together\, these works and the projects they represent open a space where imagination\, intellect\, and emotion intersect. Visitors encounter not only completed artworks but also traces of their making – interviews\, documentation\, and collaborative processes – illuminating possibilities for associating ethnographic and artistic practices. \nTo 7 December.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Elias Izoli: Inside Out ‘25
DESCRIPTION:After a long break from painting\, Izoli has returned with a new body of work centred around “the circus of life” – Izoli uses the circus as a metaphor for the unpredictability and complexity of life as a Syrian citizen. The circus and its family become a symbol of the broader social body\, with each character representing the individuals who comprise the state’s fabric \nRendered in his signature style of fragmented colours\, each portrait speaks of resilience\, illusion\, and “the spectacle of existence”. Each character is confined within their own space\, each gesture reflects the emotional weight and psychological barriers imposed by our world. The figures seem unable to escape or engage with a reality beyond their own world.

SUMMARY:Image Keepers
DESCRIPTION:For its inaugural exhibition\, SAF’s Photography Gallery presents a panorama of artistic experimentation and engagement drawn from the Sharjah Art Foundation Collection. Says the Foundation: “the works navigate the sociopolitical terrain of the last six decades against a backdrop of the compressed\, and often fissured\, processes of modernisation and decolonisation”. \nImage Keepers is curated by SAF’s Head of Curatorial Jiwon Lee and Curatorial Assistants Nada Ammagui and Osemudiamen Ekore\, with Souraya Kreidieh and Shahd Murshed from the Foundation’s Collection Department. \nTo 26 April.

SUMMARY:Photographic Encounters along the Gulf Coasts
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of 165 photographs and archival documents from the collection of Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi\, Ruler of Sharjah\, that provides a starting point for research into how photography translates and interprets history. On permanent display at Sharjah Art Foundation’s new Photography Gallery in Al Manakh\, the exhibition features late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century glass slides depicting people\, places and activities along the Arabian Gulf and Indian Ocean coasts; “these images speak in some ways to notions of power\, class\, gender and ethnicity\, signalling the prevailing cultural attitudes of the time” as the press release puts it. \nRight: ‘Busra [sic] creek’\, late 19th to early 20th century

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Ruba Salameh: Refined Compositions
DESCRIPTION:In the face of genocide\, Palestinian artist Ruba Salameh finds her way forward through abstract painting – weaving her own narrative while connecting across generations to the work of art historian and artist Kamal Boullata. \nThis exhibition reflects primarily on the persistence of certain symbols\, such as the Palestinian flag\, in the work of Palestinian artists. Reducing the colour palette as a gesture encouraged Salameh to revisit an act similar to that of other Palestinian artists before her\, as an act of reclamation. It revealed how\, even with the passing of time\, these visual elements have remained charged with urgency and continue to inhabit the thoughts and practices of Palestinian artists.

SUMMARY:Marwan Sahmani: Rupture Into Light
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition of works (some never seen before) by the Lebanese artist “whose works emerge from the intersection of identity\, contradiction and modernisation” as the gallery has it. Born in the 1970s in war-torn Beirut\, Sahmani embodies Lebanon’s complex cultural context – where Mediterranean modernism crosses with Arab heritage: his bold abstract expressionism echoes the emotional turmoil of Lebanese history. \n

SUMMARY:Dhai Dubai
DESCRIPTION:Dhai Dubai\, Dubai Culture’s light art exhibition\, has a very specific remit: just seven works but seven artists\, all Emirati. The theme for this second edition of the show is ‘Light Influences Life’. \nThe artists represent an interesting selection\, and the co-curators Amna Abulhoul and Anthony Bastic deserve credit for their choice. None are associated primarily with light art\, though Ahmad AlAreef would probably regard himself as a multidisciplinary artist who works with photography\, painting\, and sculpture; and both Hessa Alghandi and AlZaina Lootah work in 3D with practices that includes architecture and design. Fatma Lootah\, Mohammed Kazem and Khalid Al Banna are three well-known and well-established names with 2D and 3D work in their CVs; and the wildcard may be jewellery designer Alia Bin Omair. \nThere’s a programme of workshops for kids aaged 3-10\, and one bookable workshop for adults – Mobile Mastery After Dark\, a smartphone photography class that promises to help you master the art of low-light photography. It runs daily 12-18 November\, 5-9pm\, at House of Arts\, Floor 5; it’s free\, but pre-register here for your preferred date. \nDhai Dubai is at Al Wasl Plaza in Expo City\, 6pm to 11pm. \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Banksy
DESCRIPTION:Paris-based CHAMPOP Galerie opened an outpost in Downtown Dubai this summer. It specialises in pop art and street art\, and its first full-scale exhibition in Dubai features Banksy. On show are several originals plus screenprints and limited editions; the former\, for example\, include Never Liked This Banksy (2013)\, a characteristic stencil and spray paint piece on rendered brick that was removed by the building’s owners before the site was redeveloped. \nThe prints (like The Grannies below – unsigned but authenticated) will probably be a better representation of the artist’s work\, but it’s always interesting to see a chunk of original Banksy even if it’s no longer in situ … \n \n

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Whispers of the Past
DESCRIPTION:This Aisha Alabbar Gallery exhibition in collaboration with Sotheby’s Middle East features five artists whose works explore the quiet persistence of memory and cultural inheritance – Najat Makki\, Khalid Al Banna\, Sara Al Haddad\, Sara Aref Ahli\, and Samar Hejazi. Says the gallery: “each artist approaches the idea of the ‘past’ through a distinct visual language whether through the tactile layers of textile\, the fragility of glass\, or the expressive gesture of abstract form. Together\, their works trace the emotional contours of personal and collective histories. Material becomes memory; thread\, light\, and pigment act as conduits for reflection …”
