DESCRIPTION:This interesting-looking event by the Ripple Collective\, a group of multidisciplinary designers and design-led retailers based in Abu Dhabi\, has been running for four years now with little fanfare. It offers a day of “the things we love most: good people\, good design\, good ideas and the potential impact of putting them all together”. So it’s not your usual design festival\, either in scale or content; but it does look like a good chance to meet and share. It’s free (preregister here) and it will be a small group – which should be for the better\, providing opportunities to interact and engage. \nThere are a couple of concurrent sessions to chose from; note that some sessions have limited spaces and so need preregistration – we’ve indicated those. DESCRIPTION:This free-to-attend event for the UAE’s creative community – including “leading creators\, designers\, press\, influencers\, and key industry partners” – is NVIDIA’s sixth such gathering; previous venues were in KSA\, Egypt\, Turkey\, and Abu Dhabi (back in February 2024). The aim is to showcase work\, connect with industry peers\, discover new opportunities\, and explore the future of digital artistry as facilitated (of course) by the NVIDIA Studio platform. Plus perhaps a bit of demonstrating and promoting for NVIDIA Studio. \nYou also get the chance to see the entries for the Creative Challenge\, which indeed you may want to enter – there are categories for 3D/CGI\, interior design\, short films\, photography\, and digital fashion. Entrants have to be using an NVDIA product and must submit work that reflects the event’s theme\, which is just ‘Museum of the Future\, Dubai’. There will be “exciting” prizes and trophies\, plus recognition on NVIDIA’s social channels; the deadline for entries is 25 January. Ultimately\, we’re asking: how can design bring people together across disciplines\, geographies and generations?” That sets the bar quite high … \nThe highlights: \nDowntown Design 5-9 November The region’s leading fair for high-quality and contemporary design\, returns to the d3 Waterfront Terrace. This is the B2B part of Design Week\, showing collections\, innovative products and design solutions for the interiors busness; the show\, which includes this year’s cohort of the Athath Fellowship by MAKE in Abu Dhabi and the annual Tanween programme by Tashkeel\, is complemented by a programme of “pop-up concepts”\, regional spotlights\, talks and panel discussions. DESCRIPTION:The international festival of design for performance\, held every four years\, is coming to the UAE for its 2025 edition. It features exhibitions\, performances\, workshops\, talks and panels where professionals share ideas and mingle with the consumers; read our preview piece\, including an interview with the organiser\, here. \nInternational Design Exhibition and Competition \nThis platforms individual designers from across the globe\, showing work that they have created in the previous four years (no hypothetical designs are allowed). Applications to WSD25 closed in November last year with just over a thousand submissions; an international jury of 16 members has shortlisted the top 100 to show in the exhibition and compete for the awards. \nTheatre Architecture Competition \nThe TAC explores new ideas about theatre architecture and interdisciplinary cooperation. Architects and theatre makers submit their proposals for a performance space in a given location – which this time will be the courtyard at Bait Obaid al Shamsi. Collaborations between architects and other theatre practitioners such as directors\, technicians\, performers or musicians (and/or students in those fields) are encouraged. \nTechnical Invention Prize \nThe TIP competition invites theatre technicians worldwide to share simple and smart solutions in everyday stage practice – innovative gadgets\, devices\, or any other effective solutions (often crafted using affordable materials and available resources). While some inventions may be used only in a specific theatre\, company\, touring production\, or even within a single country\, the TIP provides a platform to share them with the international community. All competition entries are published in a catalogue as a reference for industry professionals and educators. \nScenofest \nThis is the festival component of WSD\, celebrating scenography with around 60 talks\, masterclasses\, panel discussions\, themed mini-exhibitions\, and immersive installations and performances (from New Zealand\, Hungary\, the UAE\, Indonesia\, UK\, Nigeria\, “and many more”) in a very full programme running 10am to 10pm each day. \nAlso part of Scenofest is a one-day Research Symposium celebrating “global perspectives\, insights and approaches to research in theatre and performance design\, architecture\, and technology”. The full programme is here. \nSound Kitchen \nA biennial opportunity for sound designers and composers to publicly present or perform their work in a listening-friendly space. Presentations may be compositions (or extracts from longer compositions)\, sound art\, sounds from an installation\, or sound scores from theatre or live entertainment; pieces are typically 10-20 minutes with an opportunity to discuss the work afterwards. There’s more information here. \nWSD25 is being organised by Sharjah Performing Arts Academy under the theme Tomorrow’s Heritage. The main venue is SPAA; TAC and some Scenofest events will be at Sharjah Arts Foundation’s Bait Obaid Al Shamsi; and the TIP will be at Sharjah Research Technology and Innovation Park. \nDay passes are AED 50 and an eight-day pass is a bargain AED 250; both include all performances\, workshops\, talks\, exhibitions\, and Scenofest.

DESCRIPTION:Ten years is always a good time to see how far we’ve come. The tenth edition of Dubai Design Week  runs 5-10 November in d3\, and this year’s festival will apparently reflect on a decade of design and its influence on the UAE and GCC’s expanding interior design and furniture market\, now estimated to be worth $26 billion in total. Fuelled by rapid urbanisation\, a strong real estate market\, diversification of the economy and evolving tastes among residents and businesses\, DDW has matured to the point where it can now stand unapologetically alongside better established design festivals. \nMuch of that is down to institutional and government focus on design as a commercial imperative\, a differentiator\, and a key element in Dubai’s image of itself and the projection of that into the wider world; but Dubai Design Week has certainly been instrumental in creating the narrative over the past decade. Here are the key elements for this year: \nDowntown Design 6-9 November The anchor event of Dubai Design Week will take place on the d3 Waterfront Terrace. The region’s leading fair for contemporary interior design and fitout-relevant solutions is complemented by talks\, keynotes and masterclasses at The Forum plus pop-up concepts\, installations and networking events. It’s still primarily a B2B fair\, but it is full of ideas and trends that make the visit worthwhile for those outside the interiors business. Opening hours: 12am-8pm (but note that 6 November is an invite-only day) \nEditions 6-9 November New for this year is the region’s first limited-edition art and design fair\, with more than 50 galleries\, design studios and collectives exhibiting design\, photography\, prints\, ceramics and works on paper. The pitch is that “Editions paves an alternative route to art and design collecting”. Opening hours: 12am-8pm  \nUrban Commissions DDW’s annual design competition this year invited designers and architects to propose innovative community furniture that took the idea of ‘the table’ beyond its basic form. It was won by Altqadum\, a research-based design studio from Oman that specialises in architecture\, interior and objects design. Taking inspiration from the musical culture of the Gulf\, where communities traditionally gather around and accompany musicians\, Altqadum’s TukTuKDum is an innovative table that encourages interaction\, inviting audiences to become performers and even an integral part of the table itself. \nAbwab Abwab (‘doors’ in Arabic) is a programme that supports designers from the SWANA region by commissioning installations or pavilions each year reflecting relevant global and regional contexts. Since its inception in 2015\, over 180 designers have participated in Abwab; for 2024\, practitioners were invited to propose designs with a focus on vernacular architecture and how community-centric architectural methods can intersect with new environments. \nInstallations DDW visitors will find more 30 projects that explore ancient technologies\, modern innovations and materiality. Highlights include the Dubai-based architectural and interior design studio Bone with a pavilion made entirely from pre-fabricated earth blocks\, a collaboration with Spanish rammed earth specialists Fetdeterra; a traditional Japanese tea-house made from 3D-printed waste sawdust\, a creation of the Japanese architectural studio Mitsubishi Jisho Design; and an AI-infused ‘second skin’ fabric that responds to the body’s state of being\, shown by the tech-driven multidisciplinary practice DEOND (founded by Ross Lovegrove and Ila Colombo). Other installations promise various organic and upcycled materials including banana fibre\, soybean wax\, henna\, Himalayan salt\, terracotta and scrap metal. \nExhibitions and activations Curated exhibitions include the annual UAE Designer Exhibition\, now in its fifth edition. Supported by Dubai Culture and curated by Omar Al Gurg\, this is an effective showcase of work by emerging UAE-based designers. Other craft/design retail opportunities include an Art Jameel shop\, 421’s Dukkan421 shop\, and Monocle’s shop and café takeover of FRAME in d3. \nTalks\, workshops and masterclasses DDW’s workshops programme is apparently “designed to inspire and elevate skills across design disciplines\, catering to professionals and aspiring creatives of all ages\, interests and experience levels”. It’s housed in a pop-up Maker Space in d3 and there’s usually something for anyone – the workshops do tend to fill up quickly\, not least because most are free. DIDI (which is based in d3) has a collection of workshops and student-led tours\, all free – sign up here. The talks programme tends to be centred on Downtown Design and takes place in The Forum\, the amphitheatre-style space within Downtown Design. \nMarketplace 9-10 November (below) A weekend outdoor “retail experience” where “visitors can discover the very best of the region’s designers\, artisans and homegrown small businesses offering quality and original products”. It’s “consciously curated”\, so in theory there should be no dross. \n \n

And the valuable ‘career surgery stations’ are back\, offering one-to-one consultations with career experts suggesting tailored career mapping plans. \nThere will also be onsite food stalls\, music and entertainment “for all ages”. \nThis is the drop-in open-to-all day; it’s preceded on 10 and 11 October by two prebook-only days\, dedicated to group visits by school and universities and anyone with a student ID. SUMMARY:Cartier\, Islamic Inspiration and Modern Design
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition highlights the influence of the Islamic arts on design at the luxury goods brand from the beginning of the 20th century to the present. Co-curated by Évelyne Possémé\, Former Chief Curator of Ancient and Modern Jewellery at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs\, and Judith Hénon-Raynaud\, Curator and Deputy Director of the Department of Islamic Art at the Musée du Louvre\, the exhibition will present more than 500 pieces ranging from jewellery and Islamic art to drawings\, books\, photographs\, and archival documents. \nThis kind of collaboration between a reputable institution and a commercial brand is often fraught with danger\, but in this case it seems a more natural fit. Cartier\, which was founded in 1847\, created an archive department 50 years ago (it was the first jewellery house to do that) and began collecting its own antique designs ten years later; there’s some depth to its involvement. \nThe present exhibition is based on one that was initially displayed in 2022 at Musée des Arts Décoratifs and the Dallas Museum of Art. A big hit in both Paris and Texas\, it majored on the influences of Louis Cartier – a noted collector of Persian and Indian paintings\, manuscripts\, and other objects – and his younger brother Jacques\, a frequent traveler to India and Bahrain. \nThe 2022 show did a great job of drawing out the variety of influences that were in the air at the time of some of Cartier’s most iconic creations\, especially from the 1920s and 1930s; the arts and architecture of the Islamic world are cleverly diagrammed and dissected to show how they relate to iconic Cartier pieces. \nMuch of the applause for that show went to its designer\, Liz Diller of the hip architectural practice Diller Scofidio + Renfro\, who cleverly used visual tricks\, digital video\, and glass display cases to draw the viewer through the space. The same scenography is being used in Abu Dhabi\, which bodes well. \nTo 24 March.

DESCRIPTION:Held in partnership with Bibliothèque nationale de France and France Muséums\, this exhibition will spotlight the Holy Books of the three Abrahamic religions – the Quran\, the Christian Bible\, and the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) – exploring the historical context in which the holy books emerged\, associated scholarly\, talismanic\, and mystical practices\, and their role in intellectual and artistic history. As benefits the concept of a ‘universal’ museum\, there will be an emphasis on the universal nature of the biblical\, evangelical\, and Quranic messages and the ethical dimension they possess by highlighting episodes and figures that are shared by all three. \nIt’s not yet clear what artefacts and information will be provided to support the show\, but the Louvre and its partners have a lot of material between them; this could be a major show\, highlighting points of similarity rather than the exaggerated differences that so often make the news. \nTo 14 January. \nAbove: Giovanni Bellini\, Virgin and Child (1480–1485).
