SUMMARY:Dana Gingras and Animals of Distinction: FRONTERA
DESCRIPTION:A visually stunning spectacle of propulsive dance\, dazzling lighting\, and powerful live music from the Canadian experimental post rock band Fly Pan Am. Choreographer Dana Gingras and her Montreal-based dance company Animals of Distinction explore spaces of inclusion and exclusion\, tackling borders as boundaries between the public and private realms; “borders are boundaries\, but they’re also processes\, liminal spaces where despair\, desire and neoliberal economic imperatives meet the obscure(d) operations of power”.  Another example of The Arts Center’s useful partnership with Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels. \nThere’s a second performance on 13 October.

SUMMARY:Black Grace: Paradise Rumour
DESCRIPTION:This premiere by the New Zealand contemporary dance company Black Grace was commissioned by Sharjah Art Foundation for SB15; it’s a development of the company’s 2009 work Gathering Clouds\, which responded to prejudice and xenophobia against Pacific migrants in New Zealand. Asking ‘how far have we really come since then?’\, Paradise Rumour deals with personal and collective memories and experiences of the Pacific Island community\, starting with the arrival of the missionaries. \nFounded in 1995 in Auckland by artistic director Neil Iermia\, a dancer and choreographer of Samoan descent\, the company incorporates elements of contemporary dance into Indigenous Samoan and Maori movement patterns. Informed by the narrative traditions of the South Pacific\, their performances engage audiences with a gamut of musical genres\, from Bach and Vivaldi to Samoan hip hop to the electropop stylings of Lorde; their group’s choreographic range juxtaposes the dynamism of high-paced acrobatics with the vulnerability of theatrical narrative\, braiding these elements together into a universal physical language. \nRecommended. Admission is free\, but space is limited and prior booking is advisable.

SUMMARY:Faustin Linyekula: My Body\, My Archive
DESCRIPTION:Faustin Linyekula is a contemporary dancer and choreographer whose style incorporates the quick\, syncopated rhythms of the West African dance style of Ndombolo. Linyekula’s focus is on notions of loss\, memory and the legacies of war and terror; exploring the fear associated with violent conflict and its debilitating effect on communities\, he expresses the affective qualities of lived and shared experiences through movement. \nThe current work\, part of the Sharjah Biennial 15 performance programme\, is co-produced by Théâtre National de la danse\, Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne; it attempts to unearth the suppressed stories of the Congolese village he has been working with. Local artist Gbaga sculpts the missing women of Linyekula’s maternal clan; bringing the sculptures to the stage\, Linyekula summons\, converses and dances with their spirits. \nThis performance is free to attend\, but advance booking is required.

SUMMARY:Chaillot – Théâtre national de la Danse / Rachid Ouramdane: Corps extrêmes
DESCRIPTION:It’s not often that a dance piece involves a climbing wall on the stage. But then it’s not often you’ll come across a dance piece that tests the ensemble’s physical strength\, emotional barriers\, and trust in each other in quite this way. Choreographer Rachid Ouramdane has produced an ambitious\, captivating work about confronting danger\, mastering the self\, the beauty of flight and the desire to escape the chains of gravity; acrobats\, rock climbers\, flyers\, slackliners and dancers come together in a visually stunning exploration of flight and freedom that features stunning video projections of remarkable natural landscapes alongside graceful yet spectacular physicality. \n‘Extreme bodies’ indeed. It’s just extraordinary\, and we recommend it highly. There’s a second performance on 13 May too. \nThe production is supported by Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels.
