SUMMARY:Huang Yi: Ink
DESCRIPTION:Huang Yi was last seen in Abu Dhabi in The Arts Center’s inaugural season\, dancing with an industrial robot. This time he takes the ‘dance meets tech’ idea in new directions; in this collaboration with audiovisual pioneer Ryoichi Kurokawa\, the lines from a hundred artworks by renowned calligrapher Tong Yang-Tze are dismantled and reconstructed to explore the various textures that can be found between body\, sound\, visual\, and space. \nHuang digs into his cultural roots to find a wild language of movement\, turning dancers’ bodies into brushes that paint marks on stage. Kurokawa transforms the inkblots into luminous tracks\, echoing and merging with the unique brushstrokes of Tong\, constructing a continuous flow of paintings via holographic projection. On stage\, dancers trace ephemeral gestures that echo the movement of a calligrapher’s brush\, while Kurokawa’s responsive sound and visual environment amplifies each motion\, dissolving the boundaries between the physical and digital worlds. The result is a hypnotic performance that unfolds like a living painting\, at once precise\, fluid\, and emotionally charged. \nBill Bragin\, Executive Artistic Director at The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi\, said: “Huang Yi’s duet with the robot KUKA dazzled audiences in our inaugural season a decade ago\, so it feels especially meaningful to welcome him back as we enter our second decade. Ink shows how his work has continued to grow\, using technology in striking and unexpected ways\, while still feeling lyrical and deeply human. We are delighted to welcome him back to Abu Dhabi and to share this extraordinary Middle East premiere of a performance mixing with the ancient art of calligraphy\, and contemporary multimedia art and robotics.” \nInk is an original production of Huang Yi Studio +\, co-commissioned by the National Taichung Theater and National Theater\, Taipei in Taiwan. It is presented in Abu Dhabi with the support of Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels.

SUMMARY:Jesús Herrera Flamenco Ballet: Hamlet
DESCRIPTION:A flamenco ballet\, inspired by Shakespeare’s tragedy and featuring more than 30 artists in total — dancers\, orchestra\, choir — under the direction of Spanish choreographer Jesús Herrera. It should be an interesting interpretation of the play: “movement replaces words and every gesture reflects the eternal human conflict between reason and passion”. The music is “inspired by” Mussorgsky\, merged with flamenco singing for “a collision of classical and contemporary worlds\, of light and shadow\, silence and rhythm”. There are shows at 5pm and 9pm.

SUMMARY:Aakash Odedra: Songs of the Bulbul
DESCRIPTION:Aakash Odedra returns to the Arts Center with his latest work\, an hour of beautiful\, engrossing virtuoso dance from a single dancer that unashamedly embodies emotions – mostly joy\, some reflection\, a tinge of sadness and pain – in a piece that ultimately describes a journey towards unity with the divine that is the core of Sufism. You don’t have to believe in the spiritual to feel the story\, though; the dancing\, the choreography\, the music\, the lighting are all that good. \nIn Persian tradition the bulbul is the bird we know as the nightingale\, famous for its melodious song and symbolising beauty\, love\, and even springtime in many cultures. The beauty of the bulbul’s singing is supposed to increase as it nears the end of its life\, mirroring the way physical boundaries can be transcended as we move towards enlightenment and the divine. \nTo extract the most powerful melody from the caged bird\, a bulbul underwent a gruelling process of ‘training’. “It was first placed in a pitch-black room so that it would sing out of a desperate longing for light to touch its feathers once more. This was followed by several harsh stages of deprivation. Finally\, in the last stage\, the bird’s eyes were removed. Blinded and broken\, the bird realised its only remaining option was to leave its mortal body by singing one final\, powerful\, and melancholic song – leaving its earthly cage behind to transcend to a higher realm where it could no longer be confined”. \nSongs of the Bulbul shows us this progress from within a minimal but highly effective set designed by Emanuele Salamanca that includes a bank of (electric) candles and endless rose petals. It’s all set off by Fabiana Piccioli’s exquisite\, atmospheric lighting; watch out for the dramatic blinding sequence … \nThe score is by Rushil Ranjan (from the Orchestral Qawwali Project) that weaves classical Indian rhythms with modern orchestral textures. It’s played (in a recording) by co-commissioners Manchester Camerata.  Principal choreography is by Rani Khanam\, a distinguished kathak dancer with more three decades of professional experience and numerous accolades to her name. \nOriginally staged at the Edinburgh International Festival in 2024\, Songs of the Bulbul has been touring in Britain to rave reviews (we saw it somewhat arbitrarily in Norwich). After Abu Dhabi it moves on to three dates in Australia and one in Florida. \nThe performance will be followed by a Q&A with Aakash Odedra and Dr Alka Bagri of the Bagri Foundation\, co-presenter of Songs of the Bulbul. \nOur feature on Songs of the Bulbul is here.

SUMMARY:Sima Dance Company: NUN
DESCRIPTION:Created by choreographer Alaa Krimed and performed by his acclaimed dance company as part of the Year of Ocean\, NUN explores the relationship between human beings and the sea – “a cosmic mirror reflecting the complexity of life” as the promo puts it. Through expressive choreography\, sound\, and visual poetry\, the performance explores how the ocean embodies our deepest dualities: drifting and returning\, life and death\, loss and rebirth … “Like the sea\, the human soul is constantly reshaped by invisible currents\, breaking and renewing itself in a perpetual cycle”. \nThe title carries ancient and universal resonance. In Mesopotamian and Egyptian cosmologies\, Nun is the primordial ocean\, the infinite waters preceding creation; in certain theological and philosophical interpretations within Islam\, it also symbolises the cosmic sea linked to knowledge\, creation\, and the mysteries of existence. “Across time and cultures\, Nun evokes beginnings\, the unknown depths\, and the hidden wisdom beneath the surface of the world.”

SUMMARY:Christos Papadopoulos: Mellowing
DESCRIPTION:In his new production the Greek choreographer Christos Papadopoulos embarks on his inaugural collaboration with the dancers of the Dance On Ensemble\, a group that features performers aged more than 40. Incorporating their knowledge and experience into the creation\, together they explore moments of perception and intensities of the moment that create a lively restlessness\, a permanent vibration in which the spectator is inevitably involved … \nChristos Papadopoulos’ works are fed by an intensely observant approach to movement and often unfold with a lively and meditative power. His attention is focused on the minimal shifts of perception\, the perpetual\, often unnoticed and yet powerful movements that are ever-present in nature\, in everyday life\, within physical phenomena and political contexts. The result promises a memorable and perhaps profound experience. \nIn the theatre foyer at 7.30pm there’s a 20-minute Moving Introduction to the piece. This interactive session invites the audience to explore two to three movement approaches from the choreography – no dance experience is needed\, “just a bit of curiosity”. \nMellowing is presented in partnership with the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region. Use the code MELLOWING20 for a discount on the ticket price. \nAnd if you want more\, there’s a two-hour Choreographic Laboratory 40+ in the afternoon led by Laura Böttinger\, a senior dancer with the Dance On Ensemble. Again\, no prior experience is needed – just a willingness to explore movement. The workshop runs 4-6pm at the Cultural Foundation; it’s free\, but pre-register here.

SUMMARY:Benji Reid: Find Your Eyes
DESCRIPTION:The second performance of a remarkable show that combines photography\, choreography and theatre to tell an emotional rollercoaster of a story. \nFind Your Eyes draws on Benji Reid’s work both as an award-winning photographer and a pioneer of hip hop theatre to create images in real time in front of the audience. He sits at the centre of the stage\, his ‘studio’\, with three dancers posing for the camera; as he shoots his models\, the images appear on large screens. The performance priogresses with the photoshoot becoming more and more elaborate\, interwoven with episodes of Reid’s own life.  … \nSays Reid: “This performance … serves as a conversation with myself to unearth where I’ve been all these years – a dialogue about struggling with alcohol\, grappling with the immense pain of my mother’s stroke\, and contending with the depths of mental health struggles\, shame\, and guilt. However\, this work is also a celebration of evolution\, a journey of moving forward\, finding breath\, discovering love\, and embracing life’s beautiful imperfections.” \n

SUMMARY:What is Dance? Beata Stankevič in conversation with Ginevra Panzetti & Enrico Ticconi
DESCRIPTION:This talk explores the evolving definition of dance\, challenging conventional ideas in choreography and examining how the concept of dance shifts across cultures and eras. Ginevra Panzetti and Enrico Ticconi\, who perform their piece Harleking also as part of the Frontiers dance programme\, have been working together since 2008 with a style that interlaces dance\, performance and visual art. Beata Stankevič\, a cultural manager with a particular focus on contemporary dance\, is the first independent locally contemporary dance programmer to be based locally; in 2020\, she co-founded the HIBA Art Project initiative to further develop the dance scene in the UAE\, and since 2023 she has been managing cultural programmes at the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region.

SUMMARY:Máté Mészáros: Performative Walk – Mechanics of Distance
DESCRIPTION:During the pandemic\, Máté Mészáros came up with an alternative form of his piece Mechanics of Distance that could still be shared and experienced while spaces were closed and gatherings prohibited. He developed a participative walk to enact nine stages of the choreography; participants can follow a route of printed pictograms\, on their own or together\, and can piece together the choreography of the performance. The result is that participants become quasi-performers themselves\, gaining the physical sensation of the changing proximity of bodies in the space – in this case streets of Alserkal Avenue. \nThis piece is part of the Frontiers dance programme.

SUMMARY:Ginevra Panzetti and Enrico Ticconi: Harleking
DESCRIPTION:The second performance\, part of the Frontiers dance programme\, for this piece by Ginevra Panzetti and Enrico Ticconi. Harleking is a choreographic work that was first seen in 2018 and has since been featured at several dance festivals; its subject is a harlequinade style of mannered gestures through jerky\, robotic movements that manage to combine a courtly formality with a sense of danger and mistrust. There are obvious references to the Harlequin of the Commedia dell’Arte\, a sly servant moved by an insatiable hunger\, a trickster who ultimately derives from a devil character in medieval Passion Plays. Harleking‘s mode of communication has something of ancient wall decorations in which monstrous figures blend in with elegant ornament – figures which can evoke amusement without any joy.

SUMMARY:Samaa Wakim & Samar Haddad King: Losing It
DESCRIPTION:Growing up in a war zone means living and breathing politics. The Palestinian choreographer and performer Samaa Wakim asks herself how these experiences impact her identity in this solo performance which explores how the trauma of previous generations manifests in her own body through movement and sound. The piece dives into her memories of growing up under occupation\, exploring the various realities she lives in and the fantasies she’s created in order to survive. As fear overtakes her\, her world begins to disintegrate: the floor becomes unstable\, and the sounds begin to warp into a world where reality and fantasy blur … \nCreated in conversation with a live score by Samar Haddad King\, the soundscape features field recordings taken throughout Palestine since 2010. Accompanied by Wakim’s vocals\, the sounds of fear and safety come together to the point where past and present cloud the future. \nThis piece is part of the Frontiers dance programme. Samaa Wakim and Samar Haddad King discuss their work in a conversation on Interdisciplinarity in Dance at 4.30pm on 15 December.

SUMMARY:Máté Mészáros: Mechanics of Distance
DESCRIPTION:This piece for three different trained dancers – they come from backgrounds in classical ballet\, folk dance and contemporary dance – has been performed several times since its 2019 premiere\, but it is always different since it is always adapted to the specific the space provided. Mechanics of Distance is about positioning static and moving bodies\, the dancers all interfering with one another’ s personal space\, cramming matching and mismatched systems into them and examining the distance between the bodies; the choreography aims to ask how far the limits of dance can be extended\, what potential there is in an open space waiting to be explored. \nThis piece is part of the Frontiers dance programme. There’s a performative version of the choreography\, with participants following the moves and experimenting with the space taken by bodies\, on 15 December at 3pm.

SUMMARY:Compagnie Nacera Belaza: La Nuée
DESCRIPTION:The title of this dance piece by Nacera Belaza holds two meanings in French: a dark cloud and a dense flock of birds. She developed the performance following a research visit to the First Nation Dakota tribes in North America; she was struck by the communal festive rituals\, where participants from different communities danced individually and collectively to an ascending rhythm. For La Nuée\, ten dancers move in a pitch-dark space in a performance that unfolds like a painting being drawn on a black canvas; the successive moving tableaux become visible under very precise jets of light that appear and disappear in tandem with the rhythm of a distinctive and singular soundtrack. \nThis performance is La Nuée‘s Arab world premiere; Belaza has seven professional dancers from her own company plus three SPAA students for this special version of the piece\, which is part of Sharjah Art Foundation’s Perform Sharjah programme.

SUMMARY:Korea National Contemporary Dance Company: Jungle
DESCRIPTION:Our everyday lives are sometimes like a jungle\, where everybody has to fight for survival in their own way. This work for 17 dancers of the Korea National Contemporary Dance Company interprets the jungle as a place of collisions between instinct and vitality of the body; it demonstrates how making and being made\, the hidden and the revealed\, relaxation and tension can run parallel to each other. \nFor Kim Sung-yong\, the company’s director and artistic director\, choreography is a process of searching for what he wants to express in the treasury of new things. Jungle\, which has toured widely\, is based on the movement research he terms ‘Process Init’\, which he developed with a focus on “sense and reaction”; through Process Init\, dancers are expected to awaken their individual concrete senses and explore mutual responses\, creating changes and expansions of movement. \nThis performance is part of the Abu Dhabi Festival.
