SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Huang Yi – Art\, Movement\, and Gratitude
DESCRIPTION:Behind the precision of robotics and the poetry of movement lies a story of resilience and grace. In this talk\, Huang Yi reflects on how scarcity became a source of creativity and how gratitude continues to guide his work and relationships within the ever-evolving landscape of art and technology – as demonstrated in his performance piece Ink in a couple of days’ time. The talk will be moderated by Aaron Sherwood\, NYUAD Associate Arts Professor of Interactive Media.

SUMMARY:Localized Futures: Collective Heritage
DESCRIPTION:A key element in 421’s Winter season is Localized Futures: Conversations by 421 x afikra\, a four-part series of talks and panel discussions developed in collaboration with afikra. The series aims to explore the future of key cultural and civic sectors through a uniquely regional lens\, challenging the dominant global narrative by looking at the complexities\, innovations\, and solutions inherent to the MENA region. 421 says this forum will foster high-level public discourse\, share critical local knowledge\, and generally strengthen the local intellectual community. \nThose are grand aims\, but clearly fit the remits of both afikra and 421. This opener explores the roles of museums\, institutions\, policymakers\, and community advocates in defining what ‘heritage’ means – “not as a static relic\, but as a living\,\nevolving source of identity and future-making”. \nOn the panel: \nRanda Omar bin Haidar Managing Partner at Bani & Al Culture\, a consultancy specialising in research and development for arts and culture projects in the region \nSalama Nasser Al Shamsi Director of Cultural sites at DCT Abu Dhabi\, where she is responsible for managing 16 cultural sites throughout the Emirate and oversees cultural preservation efforts and programmes to promote Abu Dhabi’s heritage \nSafiya Al Maskari Project Manager at Lest We Forget\, a researcher whose expertise lies in documenting oral memories of the people in the UAE \nModerated by Mikey Muhanna\, top interviewer across culture\, policy\, academia\, media\, and the arts. \nThe upcoming Localized Futures topics are Education (10 Feb)\, Cities & Communities (2 Apr) and Arts (9 Apr).

SUMMARY:Layered Dialogues: Society as Medium – In/Visible City
DESCRIPTION:Another in the series of panel discussions based around the Layered Medium: We Are in Open Circuits exhibition at this venue (runs to 30 June and is well worth seeing). Artist Minouk Lim talks with Wael Al Awar\, Principal architect and founding partner of hop studio waiwai\, discuss the hidden infrastructures of the city – both material and social – that orchestrate urban life and social relations. How does infrastructure operate as both geopolitical script and social choreography? How do these systems emerge from\, and reinforce\, particular forms of social organisation? \nConceiving the city as a layered topography of speculative\, real\, and imagined mediums\, ranging from master plans to maintenance routines\, the discussion focuses on Gulf urbanism and the cultural logic embedded in its invisible systems. This should deliver some fascinating insights …

SUMMARY:Layered Dialogues: Society as Medium
DESCRIPTION:Subtitled ‘Objects as Anchors: Material\, Narrative\, and Memory’\, this panel discussion riffs on the recently-opened Layered Medium: We Are in Open Circuits exhibition at this venue (runs to 30 June and is well worth seeing). \nAs the blurb puts it: “Objects persist across time and space\, becoming focal points around which communities\, identities\, and histories take shape. From traditional crafts and ritual items to incidental domestic bric-a-brac\, objects can anchor deeply personal or collective narratives … [The] subjective interdependence of material\, memory\, and narrative means that\, while objects might travel\, their precise meanings do not always move with them: what is sincerely felt in one place or time does not necessarily translate …”\n‍\nArtists Rand Abdul Jabbar and Sojung Jun are in conversation with Tina Sherwell\, Associate Arts Professor at NYUAD and co-director of the MFA programme there. \n

DESCRIPTION:Barjeel Art Foundation founder and noted cultural commentator Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi talks with Athar Jaber about the artist’s practice\, life\, and thoughts. Athar Jaber’s first solo show at Ayyam Gallery\, titled Vestiges\, is midway through its run (to 1 April); building on the classical notion of the mind trapped within the body\, Athar’s interesting exhibition uses the body as a metaphor for socio-political dynamics – the human form becomes a means to address power dynamics\, social structures\, and the human condition.

SUMMARY:Meet the artist: Dima Srouji
DESCRIPTION:Dima Srouji\, whose Charts for a Resurrection show opens here the day before\, is in conversation with Myrna Ayad. This should be a productive chat; Srouji is a particularly interesting artist – a graduate of the Yale School of Architecture and currently Studio Lead for the RCA’s City Design MA programme\, her work acts as a form of political commentary and as a place-making (or un-making) tool – and Ayad is adept at managing these interview-like conversations. RSVP to info@lawrieshabibi.com if you’d like to attend.
