DESCRIPTION:The Astana Opera Orchestra\, the Dubai Festival Chorus\, and conductor Rob Johnston perform the classic mainstay of the festive season – one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral pieces in Western music. Famously Handel composed Messiah in just 24 days without much sleep or food; and while writing the great ‘Hallelujah’ chorus Handel’s servant discovered him with tears in his eyes and he exclaimed\, “I did think I did see all Heaven before me\, and the great God Himself seated on His throne\, with His company of Angels”. Powerful stuff. \nThe Orchestra of the Asrtana State Opera and Ballet has more than 120 musicians\, many of them required for this full-bodied piece. Rob Johnston\, a noted tenor as well as conductor\, has led the Dubai Festival Chorus since 2019; the Chorus is a talented group of singers drawn from across the UAE\, originally brought together for the Dubai debut of the BBC Proms and now numbering over 200 members of 25 different nationalities. \n

DESCRIPTION:Dating all the way back to the late 1960s\, the darlings of quirky prog rock are still on the road with the Seven Decades tour. As with many long-lived bands\, Jethro Tull has gone through many changes in its roster; and its leader\, multi-instrumentalist Ian Anderson and the man who popularised the flute as a rock instrument (!)\, is the sole member of the original lineup – but then Jethro Tull has always been his band\, reflecting his musical vision. \nOn tour is the current incarnation: Joe Parrish on guitars and mandolin\, John O’Hara on keyboards\, Scott Hammond on drums\, David Goodier on bass\, and Anderson fronting and fluting. It’s the lineup responsible for the bands’s 23rd studio album RökFlöte – rock flute\, of course – released in April 2023 and generally well received. \nThe touring set apparently includes at least one song from each decade of Tull\, some fan favourites mixed with a few rareities. You probably won’t get too much one-legged fluting (Anderson is 76 now) and reportedly the iconic codpiece has apparently been left in the 70s. But you never know …

DESCRIPTION:One of modern jazz’s most influential living masters recently released an album titled Sounds from the Ancestors. “The concept initially was about trying to get some of the musical sounds that I remembered as a kid growing up – sounds that lift your spirit from people like John Coltrane\, Aretha Franklin\, Marvin Gaye\, and the spiritual side of the church\,” says Garrett. “When I started to think about them\, I realised it was the spirit from my ancestors.” \nThe result is clearly based in the rich jazz\, R&B\, and gospel history of his hometown of Detroit\, but also reflects a modern cosmopolitan vibe – notably music from France\, Cuba\, Nigeria and Guadeloupe. Miles Davis’ On The Corner is cited as an influence\, but mostly for its inventive approach towards extending the jazz vocabulary; Garrett is offering music that is much more melodic and sits comfortably within the modern jazz tradition. \nShould be a good evening.

A genuine child prodigy\, he became the youngest artist to sign with Deutsche Grammophon at 13; aged 15\, he recorded all 24 Caprices by Paganini\, famously among the most difficult pieces written for violin. He studied at The Juilliard School in New York with Itzhak Perlman and has been described by Yehudi Menuhin as “the greatest violinist of his generation”. \nOver the past two decades David Garrett has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras and conductors and reached new audiences around the globe with his classical and crossover repertoire. \nLate last year he released a new album\, Iconic\, which pays homage to the great violinists of the golden age. It represents a personal selection of repertoire gems\, including new arrangements for violin\, guitar and orchestra of pieces by Bach\, Gluck\, Mendelssohn\, Schumann\, Dvorák\, and Kreisler\, among others. Having been specially arranged for violin\, guitar\, and orchestra\, these pieces take on a fresh\, intimate\, and distinctive character. \nGarrett is joined for this concert by his guitarist and co-arranger\, Franck van der Heijden\, who also directs Orchestra The Prezent. “I’ve recorded many virtuoso albums myself\,” says the violinist. “This time it was particularly important to me to refocus on the essentials\, on what really speaks to the heart.”

DESCRIPTION:The Youth Orchestra is such a good idea: the International Music Institute— one of the oldest music schools in the country\, founded in 1994 — runs it as a free-of-charge programme for would-be music students in the United Arab Emirates\, selected through audition. The young musicians get a year of rehearsals and workshops with a series of public concerts (four are scheduled for 2023). \nFor this\, its second concert of the year\, the Youth Orchestra will be playing “music for the whole family and all-time kids favourites”. We have no idea exactly what’s on the programme.

DESCRIPTION:The Candlelight concerts experience – music with illumination provided by thousands of candles — is applied to Arabic music by the Fusion Al Arab Group\, presenting works such as Tehaddoh El bashar by Rashed Al-Majed\, Umm Kulthum’s Ana Fi Intizarak. Adeesh kan fe nas and Ahwak by Fairuz\, and Garahouna by George Wassouf. The shows last around 65 minutes and there are performances at 7pm and 9pm.
