DESCRIPTION:In Japanese\, the word ‘kodo’ can have two meanings – it can be translated as ‘heartbeat’\, the primal source of all rhythm\, and in a different context it can mean ‘children of the drum’\, which reflects the group’s desire to play the drums with the simple heart of a child. And there’s nothing quite like a Kodo performance – the Japanese drumming is visceral in its power and hypnotic in its effects. The troupe of highly skilled drummers delivers a thrilling theatrical experience; since the group’s debut in 1981\, Kodo has given over 7\,000 performances on five continents. \nThis Abu Dhabi festival concert is sure to be a hot ticket. There’s a second performance tomorrow (9 April). \nFun fact: The largest of the taiko drums that the Kodo troupe play can weigh up to three tonnes and are made from the trunk of a single tree. \n

DESCRIPTION:Carl Orff’s choral crowdpleaser gets the full production from Dubai Singers & Orchestra – some 120 singers accompanied by a 50-piece orchestra. \nIt will be conducted by Dubai Singers’ Music Director Jennie Lee-Foster\, The performance will feature a trio of soloists: soprano Ana Kovacevic and tenor Charles McGlone (both local) plus bass James Atkinson\, flying in specially from the UK. Dubai Singers will also be joined by members of the Abu Dhabi-based Al Khabairat Choral Society. \nCamena Burana is an exciting work musically\, percussive and highly rhythmical. Its background is interesting too; the cantata is based on a collection of Mediaeval poems and dramatic texts of the same name\, written (probably) by students\, clergy and young monks. Most of the pieces are irreverent and satirical\, some are very bawdy too. There are more than 250 in total\, but Carl Orff only picked a couple of dozen for his work. \nOrff actually expected performances of Carmena Burana to incorporate something else happening on the stage\, dance or theatre (or in some productions a kind of live painting session); that rarely happens these days\, though this time there will be a musical interlude featuring an ensemble from the Dubai Ballet Centre. \nDoors open at 6.30pm\, and there will be an iftar in the lobby area before the performance starts at 8pm.

DESCRIPTION:Accolades like “accomplished singer/songwriter” and “talented musician” are bandied about all too easily; Mary Gatchell really does seem to deserve them. Here’s a partial CV: A graduate of NYU with a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Theory and Composition and a Master of Music degree in Instrumental Performance in Jazz Piano\, she has performed in small clubs and large stadiums\, in solo shows and with the groups that she’s in – like NYC’s premiere a cappella choir\, Ghostlight Chorus\, and the New Orleans southern funk bank Strangeland. \nShe’s a member of the Leon Lacey Orchestra of which she has been principal oboist; she’s also played principal oboe with the New York Chamber Players. Mary was the co-founder and artistic director of the Italian chamber music festival Siena Summer Music\, held from 2008 to 2016\,;and in 2023 her classical composition Paradiso Canto 33\, setting Dante’s text to music for a cappella choir\, was premiered in Siena. \nMary is a choreographer and musical director as well (for productions of West Side Story\, The Wiz\, Jesus Christ Superstar\, and Dreamgirls among others). She is currently a rehearsal pianist and substitute conductor for the Broadway hit\, Six The Musical. \nShe’s a music teacher too; she’s a visiting lecturer at NYU\, she has implemented a sustainable music curriculum for HIV-infected and impoverished children in Ethiopia\, and she has taught music to orphans with special needs in Bulgaria. \nAnd she’s a recording artist\, of course\, with seven albums of her original music plus three albums of hymns and spirituals\, a Christmas album\, and an album of jazz standards. \nMary’s imminent 13th album\, What’s My Name? Destiny\, sets music to a collection of love poems from such as Rabia of Basra\, Rumi\, Hafiz\, St Catherine of Siena\, and Farouk Henry. SUMMARY:Max Richter: The Four Seasons Recomposed
DESCRIPTION:When it comes to the classical repertoire\, you don’t get much more mainstream than Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. It seems dangerous\, even perhaps sacrilegious\, to tinker with this much loved\, immensely popular music. But because it has been played so often and by so many virtuosi\, maybe there’s now nothing new to say with the piece. So Max Richter\, the contemporary classical composer of music for stage\, opera\, ballet\, screen and concert hall\, decided to rework it from the ground up. \nHis innovative take on Vivaldi’s classic\, first heard in 2012\, retains the emotional depth of the original while introducing a contemporary soundscape – Richter has said that he had discarded 75 percent of Vivaldi’s original material\, but the parts he does use are phased and looped to provide a dynamic\, modern twist. The result is a true orchestral work\, albeit with some respectably subtle electronic treatments here and there. Reviews of performances and recordings have ranged from the incurably bewildered and damning to grudging respect and outright enthusiasm\, so it will be at the least interesting to see how Vivaldi can be introduced to the 21st century … \nIt’s performed at Dubai Opera by the Kyiv Virtuosi chamber orchestra\, led by conductor Dmitry Yablonsky\, with the much-feted Ukrainian violinist Anastasiya Petryshak.

So we’re happy to flag up two free concerts for the Festival of Lights\, with the plaza in front of Etihad Arena transformed into an atmospheric concert venue featuring thousands of candles illuminating the steps of the arena. Attendees will get Sarangi performances by Nabeel Khan’s Bollywood Ensemble and show-stopping dance routines from celebrity choreographer Sarah Pinto\, with classical renditions of iconic Bollywood songs\, including Tum Hi Ho by Arijit Singh\, Lag Ja Gale by Lata Mangeshkar\, and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s soulful O Re Piya\, to name a few. \nThere are two performances (at 6.30 and 8.30pm) and spaces are limited – reserve tickets here.
