SUMMARY:Abu Dhabi International Book Fair
DESCRIPTION:This year’s ADIBF – remarkably\, it’s the 34th edition – has the theme ‘Knowledge Illuminates our Community’\, a sentiment which brooks no argument. There are 90 participating countries\, the ‘Focus Personality’ is Avicenna (Ibn Sina)\, the ‘Book of the World’ is One Thousand and One Nights\, and the guest of honour\, usually a single nation\, is Culture of the Caribbean Basin. \nLast year there were more than 230\,000 visitors\, 1\,350 exhibitors\, and reportedly in excess of 1.5 million books sold. All those numbers should be beaten this time around; ADIBF is a genuine force in the booming regional publishing field\, and some clever extras – like a much-expanded ‘Podcast from Abu Dhabi‘ programme\, the Sheikh Zayed Book Award ceremony\, and a famously busy schedule of something like 2\,000 lectures\, panel discussions\, specialised workshops and other activities – make it a good bet for the reader as well as the publishing professional. \nThe book fair has been extended to ten days this year; it runs 9am to 10pm from 26 April to 5 May. Admission is free\, but you’ll need to pre-register.

DESCRIPTION:The 43nd edition of SIBF promises to be the fair’s biggest edition ever\, claiming to show more than 1.5 million titles by 2\,500 publishing houses from 112 different countries. There will also be a packed 12-day agenda of more than 1\,350 activities – among them 47 live cookery demonstrations and no fewer than 600 workshops in creative writing for all age groups conducted in Arabic and English. \nAnd there’s the return of the third edition of the Thriller Festival show-within-the-show (7-10 November) organised in partnership with Thriller Festival NY and featuring authors such as Ahmed Mourad\, Amir Atef\, Yehia Safwat\, Saad Abed Al Badr\, Mohammed Al Nasser\, John J Nance\, Isabella Maldonado\, KJ Howe and Tess Gerritsen. There will be panel sessions\, workshops (including a three-dayer led by Ahmed Mourad on writing thrillers) and of course book signings. DESCRIPTION:The 33rd ADIBF 2024 – which runs 29 April to 5 May at ADNEC under the slogan ‘Where the World’s Tales Unfold’ – will be showing 1\,350 publishers from 90 countries (12 of them represented for the first time)\, 375 local exhibitors (publishers\, distributors\, government entities)\, and more than 2\,000 associated activities covering various cultural and knowledge fields (including the third running of a series of debates modelled on the Oxford style\, the first examples of that in the Arab world). \nEgypt is the Guest of Honour this year for its “role as a beacon of knowledge\, culture\, and art that has influenced the cultures and knowledge of the masses with creative content across various fields”. The Fair also celebrates the first Arab author to win the Nobel Prize\, the late Naguib Mahfouz\, as the Focus Personality for this year – his best known novels\, Cairo Trilogy and Children of Gebelawi were banned in Egypt until recently. The Focus Personality programme includes critical readings\, lectures and seminars\, and a dedicated pavilion. \nAlso returning is a Professional Programme designed to support Arab and international publishers. This year’s edition will highlight the impact of AI on the publishing world and creative industries; there will also be a Copyright Exchange Forum\, the Abu Dhabi Fellowship Programme (Abu Dhabi Connect)\, and the New Opportunities Centre. The Fair will also adopt a new initiative to support digital technologies and statistics in the Arab world\, with a special focus on artificial intelligence\, offering advanced workshops to build Arab publishers’ skills in this field. \nNew this year is an Arabic Content Forum for Children and Adolescents\, a dedicated forum for photography as part of the Arts Corner titled ‘Image as Language’; a dedicated Cinema Corner with screenings and creative workshops; an Arabic Content Forum for Children and Adolescents; a dedicated forum for photography as part of the Arts Corner titled ‘Image as Language’\, and a popular book market named after the Al-Azbakiya Wall Book Market in Egypt. \nExtras for visitors include one free visit per person to the Qasr Al Hosn and Louvre Abu Dhabi museums\, discounts from audiobook publishers\, and savings of up to 25 percent on book prices. DESCRIPTION:The sixth edition of Sharjah Art Foundation’s Focal Point art book fair – the region’s only art book fair\, we think – features local and international publishers with book launches\, talks\, workshops and musical performances during its run (24 to 26 November at Bait Obaid Al Shamsi). \nFeaturing artists’ presses\, bookmakers\, self-publishers and non-commercial cultural producers\, this year’s edition encourages the community to engage with independent publishing and the central role of books as tools for social mobilisation and the development of a free and just world.  As well as the works on show\, all available for purchase; the fair also has talks\, book launches\, artists’ signings\, workshops\, music and artist-made products. Winners of the 2023 Publishing Grant will also be announced during the fair. \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF)
DESCRIPTION:The 42nd edition of SIBF promises to be the fair’s biggest edition ever\, claiming to show more than 1.5 million titles by 2\,000 publishing houses representing 108 different countries. There will also be a packed 12-day agenda of 1\,700 activities in total. Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri\, CEO of the organiser\, Sharjah Books Authority\, said that Sharjah has become a silk road for publishers worldwide – “a hub that connects the East and West”. \nFor the average book-loving visitor\, highlights include book signings with around 600 authors from around the world (among them star names like Wole Soyinka\, Malcolm Gladwell\, and Kareena Kapoor); more than 900 workshops for adults and children\, including creative writing; and a focus on support for disabilities\, including a signing workshop and the announcement of the ABC International Excellence Award for Accessible Publishing. \nThere’s also a three-day Thriller Fest show-within-the-show (8-10 November) organised in partnership with Thriller Festival NY and bringing a collection of best-selling English-language authors to Sharjah. \nSIBF runs 1 to 12 November\, open daily 10am to 10pm (Fridays 4pm to 11pm). \n  \n

SUMMARY:Abu Dhabi International Book Fair
DESCRIPTION:The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair is getting into its stride now; it’s still basically a commercial environment where publishers and distributors make deals\, but in the last few years it has developed into a celebration of reading and writing with a solid programme of workshops\, talks and presentations. \nADIBF runs to 28 May and is open daily from 9am to 10pm. It’s free to attend\, but preregistration is recommenced; your ticket will also give you complimentary access to the Louvre Abu Dhabi\, Qasr Al Hosn\, House of Artisans and Bait Al Gahwa for one visit between 19 May and 19 June 2023.
