SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Bygones
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to come from a home that does not exist today? The artworks in this exhibition examine the idea of true foreigners – whose left-behind homes exist not only in a different place\, but also in a different time. Bygones was born out of a longing for community\, and reflects on the trials and tribulations of holding onto a homeland when one relates wholeheartedly to what it once was\, but what it is no longer. \nThis is a deeply personal exhibition for curator Anita Shishani\, who has included her own paintings\, weaving her voice into the dialogue visually. Artists Anastasia A\, Alla Abdunabi\, Aya Afaneh\, Houssam Ballan\, Bady Dalloul\, Hala El Abora\, Zaina El-Said\, Syed Hussain\, Diana Ishaqat\, Pouran Jinchi\, Anuar Khalifi\, Yoonsik Chico Park\, and Ansadat Zumsoy have contributed their work.

SUMMARY:Nada Baraka and Esraa Elfeky: Across A Velvet Horizon
DESCRIPTION:A collaborative presentation of Egyptian artists Nada Baraka and Esraa Elfeky that plays on “a sense of incompleteness … Here\, history is unfixed and left open to question. Viewers are invited to sit with uncertainty\, to embrace the search even when the full picture remains tantalisingly out of reach”. Baraka’s evocative paintings and Elfeky’s tactile sculptures offer a visual narrative that blurs personal\, cultural\, and environmental histories\, occupying a space between the real and the imagined. \nTo 8 April. \nAbove: Nada Baraka\, Lukewarm Library

SUMMARY:Mobius Design Studio: Crystal No.6
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition celebrates the historic Dubai neighbourhood of Freej Al Murar (on the Deira side of Dubai Creek) as a living archive of artistry\, community\, and resilience. In this research project\, Sharjah-based Mobius Design Studio – led by Hadeyeh Badri\, Hala Al-Ani\, and Riem Ibrahim – has explored the layered histories and vibrant culture of Freej Al Murar. \nAt its core\, the project acknowledges the erasure driven by capitalism\, where the beauty of traditional garments often overshadows the labour and stories of their makers. The project began with an exploration of the mkhawera\, the traditional embroidered garment of Emirati women; this work pays homage to the artisans who are often excluded from the narrative. \nThe exhibition features an installation of nine addas (embroidery stretchers) with embroidered personal narratives by artisans\, a short film by Abdulla Majjan\, and a publication with essays that explore the neighbourhood’s significance. \nTo 11 March.

SUMMARY:Hady Boraey: Migrants to the North
DESCRIPTION:The second solo show at this gallery for the Egyptian artist\, featuring new works with themes of memory\, nostalgia\, and childhood. Inspired by ancient Egyptian and Coptic art\, Boraey heavily depends on metaphors\, “taking his audience on a dramatic journey filled with poetic nuances to coax them into new territory beyond their comfort zones” as the gallery puts it. \nThe artist himself says the inspiration came from his father’s library: “In my journey from childhood to maturity\, I was affected and dreamed a lot of another distant land to live in. There is nothing in it but a rock\, a horse\, a tree and a lake. A pure\, simple dream. Here\, in some of these paintings\, I tried to convey my childhood dream in paintings that carry many of the feelings of Hady the child\, whose life took him far from his home in the Delta. He still dreams of the legends of his grandmother’s old tales …” \nTo 5 April.

SUMMARY:Nadine Ghandour: Rooms for Error
DESCRIPTION:Nadine Ghandour’s first solo exhibition in the UAE\, curated by Dawn Ross\, features recent works informed by her experiences in various cities\, including Dubai\, Sharjah\, Cairo and Rotterdam. Working with drawing\, writing\, performance and sculpture\, Ghandour creates works that depict imagined (and often farcical) situations set within cities\, exploring the impact of rapid urban development on those environments. “The fast-forward city gives rise to characters who are chronically uncertain”\, says the gallery\, “navigating and coexisting within these fragile architectures\, while constantly teetering on the brink of change or collapse”. \nTo 18 May.

SUMMARY:Mariana Oushiro: The Higher We Soar
DESCRIPTION:This solo exhibition by the Japanese-Brazilian artist marks the culmination of her V-Residency programme at Volery\, during which Oushiro has developed a new body of work that (according the gallery) “pushes the boundaries of abstraction\, inviting the viewer into a dynamic exploration of movement\, perception\, and spatial depth”. \nOushiro’s practice is characterised by bold strokes of colour and geometric forms\, drawing from the expressive vibrancy of Brazilian art and the precision of Japanese aesthetics. The Higher We Soar is “an invitation to experience abstraction as a visceral\, multi-sensory language—one that speaks to both the intellect and intuition\, navigating the space between rigour and release\, stillness and motion”. \nTo 5 April.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Zineb Sedira: A way of surviving\, a way of life …
DESCRIPTION:Sedira’s films represent a profound archival exploration of identity\, and cultural activism. Born in 1963 to Algerian parents\, her work is deeply rooted in her self-narration but also sheds light on broader\, interconnected global anxieties surrounding cultural emancipation and diaspora. \nThis exhibition of Sedira’s pioneering cinematic practice is centred on the award-winning Dreams Have No Titles (2022)\, presented as a constructed full-scale cinema box in the Cultural Foundation’s atrium. Originally conceived for the French Pavilion at the 2022 Venice Biennale\, Dreams Have No Titles is an immersive installation comprising film\, sculpture\, photography and performance\, that interweaves the artist’s biography with activist films produced across France\, Algeria and Italy in the 1960s and 1970s\, a pivotal moment in the history of avant-garde film production. \nAlso featured are mise-en-scène (2019); Image Keepers (2010); and Mother Tongue (2002). These films all carry key concepts in the artist’s practice as they illustrate the complexities of migration\, memory\, and the intergenerational transmission of knowledge.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Hot Spots
DESCRIPTION:The second in The Gallery Collective\, a series of sort-of gallery takeovers whereby Sotheby’s Dubai is giving its DIFC exhibition space over to a series of local galleries in a two-year run starting in November. Every six to eight weeks\, a partner gallery will curate a show in the space; this time it’s Tabari Artspace and Third Line. Showcasing a range of artists from across the Middle East and North Africa\, the title draws inspiration from the language and codes of advertising\, particularly the vocabulary used in travel marketing; “by adopting this commercial vernacular\, the exhibition brings forward deeper themes of human movement\, cultural attachment\, and globalisation”.

SUMMARY:Artist talk: Athar Jaber
DESCRIPTION:Barjeel Art Foundation founder and noted cultural commentator Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi talks with Athar Jaber about the artist’s practice\, life\, and thoughts. Athar Jaber’s first solo show at Ayyam Gallery\, titled Vestiges\, is midway through its run (to 1 April); building on the classical notion of the mind trapped within the body\, Athar’s interesting exhibition uses the body as a metaphor for socio-political dynamics – the human form becomes a means to address power dynamics\, social structures\, and the human condition.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Three Tired Tigers
DESCRIPTION:Bringing together more than 40 artists and collectives\, drawing from politics\, history\, economics and urbanism\, this exhibition takes a playful yet serious approach to how animals navigate and thrive within the gaps of urban environments. What happens when animals escape their enclosures or conflict with humans\, shifting from admired symbol to nuisance\, from pet to pest? Visitors are challenged to rethink coexistence\, ecology and the importance of recognising animals as part of our everyday geographies. \nFeaturing works by artists engaging with urban animals across different regions – from Dubai’s many street cats to stories of displaced dogs\, disappearing lions and bears living atop mountains – the exhibition invites us to view our cities and landscapes from a (mostly) four-legged perspective. It is curated by Lucas Morin. \nWorks by: Noor Abuarafeh; Asim Abu Shakra; Abbas Akhavan; Farah Al Qasimi; Heba Y Amin; Atelier HOKO; Sophia Balagamwala; Sammy Baloji; Jumana Bayazid El Husseini; Anna Boghiguian; Kasper Bosmans; Cheng Xinhao; Ali Cherri; Chim↑Pom from Smappa!Group; Bouie Choi; Jason Dodge; Mohieddine Ellabbad; Annika Eriksson; Simryn Gill; Kadhim Hayder; Khalid Jauffer; Hayv Kahraman; Sudhira Karna\, Madhumala Mandal\, Rebati Mandal\, Selo Yadav and Sumitra Yadav; Kee Ya Ting and David Tan\, with Migrant Ecologies Projects; Candice Lin; Ali Milad; Benoît Piéron; Pilar Quinteros; Walid Raad; Khalil Rabah; Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook; Lin May Saeed; Mark Salvatus; Walid Siti; Shimabuku; Mariam Suhail; Risham Syed; Robert Zhao Renhui (The Institute of Critical Zoologists).

SUMMARY:Reza Derakshani: I Paint Your Grace\, I Paint Your Pain\, I Paint Love
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition of paintings by the noted Iranian-American artist. Derakshani has a body of work that spans decades\, with examples in major institutional and private collections worldwide; this exhibition presents a selection of never-before-exhibited works from three of his celebrated series – The Hunt / Riders\, Day and Night / Fig Leaf\, and Migration / Grey Zone – that engage with themes of memory\, identity\, and transformation. \nDrawing inspiration from Persian miniature painting and poetry\, The Hunt evokes the grandeur and nostalgia of medieval iconography with the horse a symbol of spiritual and physical freedom. Day and Night / Fig Leaf explores dualities – light and darkness\, presence and absence – through expressive brushwork\, bold colours\, and rich metallic paints. Migration / Grey Zone contemplates displacement and belonging\, with the slow-walking turtle as a symbol of endurance and an enduring connection to homeland. Says the gallery: “these works offer a rare opportunity to experience the breadth of Derakshani’s artistic vision\, where past and present converge in a thoughtful exploration of form\, colour\, and narrative”. \nTo 15 September. \nAbove: Reza Derakshani\, Midnight Hunt (2024) \n

SUMMARY:The Things She Carries
DESCRIPTION:What does a woman carry\, literally and metaphorically? Is it the weight of expectations\, the symbols of tradition\, or the aspirations she dares to chase? \nThis evolving art installation\, conceptualised by author Purva Grover and art curator Bhairavi Mistry in celebration of International Women’s Day\, foregrounds such questions; visitors are invited to contribute objects that symbolise the expectations society places on women – “heels\, lipstick\, a baby bottle\, a pan\, a measuring tape\, a laptop case\, post-its\, a laundry basket\, an apron\, a vacuum cleaner attachment\, a planner\, dumbbells\, sewing kit\, a stack of fashion magazines\, engagement ring box\, yoga mat\, makeup wipes\, certificates\, cleaning gloves\, and more” … \nRunning alongside is SHE CANVAS\, a more conventional exhibition of 22 artworks curated by Mistry. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Morteza Darehbaghi: Timeless Blossoms
DESCRIPTION:Throughout history\, nature has shape artistic expression across cultures. Persian carpets exemplify this influence\, transforming the beauty of gardens and delicate blossoms into intricate designs. These motifs are deeply woven into Iranian craftsmanship\, creating timeless works that connect the human spirit with the natural world. \nMorteza Darehbaghi’s solo exhibition explores the intersection of tradition and modernity through intricate works inspired by the enduring beauty and cultural symbolism of blossoms in art and nature. Drawing inspiration from centuries-old artistic traditions\, Darehbaghi reinterprets classical Persian motifs such as Persian lacquer painting and the iconic Gol-o-Morgh (flower and bird) designs through contemporary techniques. His work echoes the timeless elegance of Persian art while infusing it with dynamic\, modern energy.
