SUMMARY:Khalif Tahir Thompson / Summer Wheat: Jewels
DESCRIPTION:The first in The Gallery Collective\, a series of sort-of gallery takeovers whereby Sotheby’s Dubai is giving its DIFC exhibition space over to a series of local galleries in a two-year run starting in November. Every six to eight weeks\, a partner gallery will curate a show in the space. First up is Zidoun-Bossuyt Gallery with a two-hander\, showing the works by NYC-based Khalif Tahir Thompson (“emotionally charged pieces\, characterised [by] a vivid colour palette\, explore themes of identity\, cultural heritage\, and personal narrative”) and the American Summer Wheat (“textured\, vibrant paintings [that] focus on femininity\, labour\, and community through bold\, figurative compositions and innovative use of materials”). To 6 January. \nAbove: Khalif Tahir Thompson\, Wrapped In Satin (2022)

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Artist’s Rooms: Amba Sayal-Bennett
DESCRIPTION:Works spanning the last eight years of the artist’s practice that critically engage with the socio-political contexts of architectural heritage and modernist ideologies and aesthetics. Drawing is at the centre of Amba Sayal-Bennett’s practice\, expanding across works on paper\, projections and sculptural installations; she is particularly interested in the nature of abstraction\, using technology in the form of language\, tools\, methods and materiality to stage relations and engagement between human and non-human. \nWithin her work\, Sayal-Bennett critiques the tendency of colonial practices to decontextualise and appropriate. She traces the migration of architectural forms across continents\, such as to Chandigarh in Punjab\, the birthplace of her maternal grandparents\, and where Le Corbusier’s purpose-built city examines the failings of modernism in post-colonial contexts. She explores modernism’s rejection of ornamentalism as well as her interest in sci-fi aesthetics\, a genre which has long been criticised for its colonial overtones.

SUMMARY:Thaier Helal: Navigating Through Nothing
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition featuring Helal’s most recent body of work and a pivotal moment in the artist’s evolution\, a more straightforward yet deeply expressive style without the constraints of his previous methods. The new approach\, characterized by loose\, dynamic strokes\, invites viewers to engage with the artwork instinctually; “by focusing on the expressive potential of each stroke\, he draws on the tradition of abstraction\, where the act of painting becomes a narrative in itself” as the gallery puts it. \nTo 5 January. \nAbove: Thaier Helal\, Navigating Through Nothing (2024)

SUMMARY:Edgar Orlaineta: What We See of Things is the Things
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the Mexican artist whose practice focuses on hybrid sculptural forms that draw inspiration from modernism\, popular culture\, and specific historic moments. In particular\, Orlaineta explores post-war design and architecture\, generally depicting biomorphic shapes with a strong surrealist influence. \nIn his new body of work\, Orlaineta reflects on the philosophical explorations of perception and essence\, challenging traditional notions of art and the birth point of objects through a profound engagement with materiality and meaning. His exploration of objects as non-functional or decontextualised allows him to strip them down to their purest form: a thing. What is it that differentiates things from objects\, or even from art? How do these things interact with their environment? Is it the environment that gives them meaning\, or vice versa? At what point during the process of making something\, does it actually become something? \nThrough his works\, Edgar Orlaineta seeks to eliminate any pre- conceptualised notions of the depicted objects\, reducing them to what they appear as to the naked eye: things. \nTo 25 January. \nAbove: Edgar Orlaineta\, (Da)Dandy (2024)

SUMMARY:Chaouki Choukini: Citadelles of Today
DESCRIPTION:New work by the Lebanese-born Paris-based sculptor. Working mainly in wood but occasionally in marble or stone\, Choukini’s aethetic may appear somewhat primitivist; in fact his sculptures exhibit a sophisticated interrogation of organic and mechanical worlds. To 20 January.

SUMMARY:Eman Alhashemi: Superficial Transactions
DESCRIPTION:Alhashemi’s second solo exhibition at the gallery is her first after returning from the States with a Master’s in Fine Arts. Curated by Nasser Abdullah\, this exhibition presents a series of works that build on her previous experiences\, “appearing as annotations and reflections that encapsulate different phases she has undergone since the beginning of her career”. From her early days with hand-printing and producing repetitive editions\, she has moved on to sculpture and ceramics\, then performance art and multimedia video; her practice is characterised by an ability to embrace mistakes and inconsistencies across editions\, a reconciled perspective on imperfection and difference that echoes the diversity of human nature. \nTo 6 January. \nAbove: Eman Alhashemi\, Vessel 205 (2024)

SUMMARY:Negin Fallah\, Mai Al Remeithi\, Annie Kurkdjian: Contours of Belonging
DESCRIPTION:A group show for three female artists whose backgrounds\, experiences\, and practices converge in a shared exploration of cultural heritage\, personal memory\, and emotional landscapes. Negin Fallah examines the intersection of tradition and transformation\, where echoes of Iranian illuminated manuscripts and miniatures collide with contemporary narratives of human psychology\, mythology\, and naturalistic philosophy. Mai Al Remeithi’s minimalist compositions channel the architectural metamorphosis of the UAE\, echoing the nation’s balance of heritage and modernity. And Annie Kurkdjian‘s portraits\, often grotesque and haunting\, provide a window into the human psyche scarred by war and displacement. \nTo 30 November.

SUMMARY:Adel El Siwi: Yellow Tropics
DESCRIPTION:El Siwi’s first solo exhibition in over a decade features both new paintings and pieces from an archive of earlier works: “the paintings shown here collectively present philosophical provocations and musings” says the gallery. The title references Upper Egypt and the origin of man\, but also Egypt’s literal reach towards its African neighbours\, hinting at a desire to reclaim an element of identity as part of the Continent: “it is not simply Egypt’s Islamic and Mediterranean history and culture that inform his country’s identity\, but according to El Siwi\, a longer and earlier one … A conjuring of a shared Continental history of Africa\, and a desired alignment by the artist artistically and emotionally with a greater story of identity and history\, has resulted in an oeuvre unlike many artists of his generation”. \nTo 9 January. \nAbove: Adel El Siwi\, Head of The Princess. SUMMARY:Tyrrell Winston: Life in the Fast Lane
DESCRIPTION:Winston’s work blends art with sports culture\, transforming everyday objects – deflated basketballs\, cigarette butts\, even the signatures of artists and athletes –into pieces that challenge viewers to reconsider the significance of these items; the results “resonate with resilience\, legacy\, and cultural identity” (says the gallery). His subject is the parallel struggles of athletes and artists\, speed and sacrifice\, the repetitive nature of success and the unseen sacrifices that lead to greatness. \nTo 12 December.

SUMMARY:Alserkal Art Week
DESCRIPTION:Alserkal Art Week returns 17-25 November. As usual many of the galleries will be opening new shows during the week (we count ten: they’re listed separately in the Agenda)\, but the Alserkal Avenue people have been developing a programme themselves to provide lots more reasons to visit the Avenue – screenings\, performances\, open studios\, symposia\, workshops\, and slow art walks. This year there is a theme\, ‘Acts of Presence’\, to emphasise “the importance of togetherness and connection amidst an increasingly divided world”. \nOur pickouts:\nMade Present: Biographies of Artworks Defying the Ongoing Nakba Curated by Faris Shomali and Zaina Zarour\, this ‘research exhibition’ charts the survival of over ten Palestinian artworks\, foregrounding the extensive history of artists who have gone to great lengths to ensure their works remain visible. “While the history of Palestine’s art is often depicted as one of loss\, fragmentation\, colonial plunder\, and destruction\, this exhibition offers an alternative historiography – one in which these artworks defy attempts at erasure.” Warehouse 50\, details here. \nWalk With Me: Public Art Commissions Now in its second iteration\, this series of site-specific public art commissions (curated by Zoé Whitley and presented by Alserkal Arts Foundation) sited around the Avenue are intended to reflect on fragility\, resilience\, and public memory. There are four artists with work on show: Dima Srouji\, Asma Belhamar\, Abbas Akhavan and Vikram Divecha. Information here\, and there’s a tour of the works at 4pm on 17 November led by Whitley\, Divecha and Belhamar; free\, but register for a place here. \nSlow art walks A thoughtful amble through exhibitions\, public art\, and hidden corners of the Avenue. There are two\, both on 23 November; one at 4pm with writer/curator Yalda Bidshahri\, the other at 5pm with Priyanka Mehra of Ishara Art Foundation. We’re not sure where these start – A4 space is usually a good bet – and they don’t seem to need preregistration. \nMajlis Talks This edition of Majlis Talks is entitled ‘Acts of Presence: Stories of Africa’s Creative Leaders’. Curated by Charlotte Ashamu\, it is a series of four discussions and demonstrations with alternative voices from Ghana\, Ethiopia\, South Africa\, and Côte d’Ivoire. 17 November\, 5.30-7pm; free\, but register here. \nDomestic Departures: (Im)mobility\, loss and resilience in an uncertain world Recipients of Alserkal Arts Foundation Research Grants 2022-2024 present multidisciplinary projects that address permanence and belonging via conversations and research displays with six practitioners – Khalda El Jack\, Zainab Gaafar\, Lubnah Ansari\, Natasha Maru\, Rhea Shah\, and Maitha AlSuwaidi – using experimental cartography\, immersive installations\, and independent zines. On 23 November\, 2-6pm at Jossa by Alserkal; free\, but register here. \nOpen Studios Alserkal Arts Foundation will also be opening the studios of its current residents – sound artist Jad Saliba\, writer and visual artist Sinzo Aanza\, academic researcher and mixed-media artist Thlana Bazik\, and filmmaker Pallavi Paul. Warehouse 50. \nOur Future(s) This “immersive experience” presented by the Dubai Future Foundation and Museum of the Future\, invites visitors to contemplate our collective futures via an installation that engages audiences through key statements and delicate sound whispers\, representing the uncertainties that shape our shared future. “Through this reflective space\, the Foundation aims to better understand public sentiment\, helping to shape informed strategies and innovative solutions for a more resilient and sustainable world.” Warehouse A1\, information here. \nDissuader: Art and Design This exhibition of work by the Italian designer and artist Franco Perrotti is another collaboration with partners\, in this case the Gieffe Group and Italian Cultural Institute of Abu Dhabi. Central to the exhibition is Dissuader\, a monumental allegorical pigeon sculpted from stainless steel and birchwood\, symbolising the complex dynamics between humans and their environment. SUMMARY:Alyazia Al Nahyan: In the Breath of Decay
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the Emirati artist to open this new gallery in Abu Dhabi’s Mina al Zayed. Al Nahyan’s practice is based on foraging — materials she collects on her walks through her family farm and elsewhere\, are accentuated in the shapes they leave behind after being subjected to bleach and vinegar. Nadine Khalil\, who curates the exhibition\, describes Al Nahyan as “an artist who lets the natural world take the lead in her process of mark-making … She is interested in how a landscape can hold memories and renders this thought in subtle\, abstract works that represent both zoomed-out and magnified perspectives”. \nTo 20 January. \nFounded in 2020 and rooted within the UAE art scene\, Iris Projects describes itself as a socially-driven visual arts and culture agency that “seeks to be an agent of cultural transformation”. The gallery will be open to the public by appointment only. Future programming is planned to include talks\, panels and guided tours of exhibitions; artists represented by Iris (and from whom we can presumably expect future shows) include Abdullah Al Othman\, Juma Al Haj\, Roudhah Al Mazrouie\, and Shamsa Al Omaira.

SUMMARY:Putting the Record Straight: The Lost Women of Art History
DESCRIPTION:Continuing this seven-part lecture series by art historian Rose Balston on female artists from the 16th through to the 18th century – “women who have not only been side-lined\, but literally (and shockingly) blocked out of history”\, mainly by the (male) custodians of 19th-century art history. The talks run every other Wednesday to 4 December from 11am to 12.30pm; individual sessions are AED 250 per person\, but there’s a deal for all seven at AED 1\,650. \nThe schedule: \n11 Sept Blazing the Trail: Sofonisba Anguissola\nIn the 16th century\, Sofonisba Anguissola painted her way out of domesticity to unprecedented fame\, earning accolades from (among others) Michelangelo and Van Dyck. \n25 Sept The Secret Renaissance: The Women of Bologna\nThe female artists of 16th and 17th century Bologna flourished in this city and became part of its cultural identity. \n9 Oct Artemisia Gentileschi: Art and Power\nThe most famous of all female artists from this period\, Artemisia secured her place among the Baroque masters with astonishing paintings that powerfully reflect her personal struggles and cultural triumphs. \n23 Oct Women who Shaped the Dutch Golden Age: Legacy Reclaimed\nExplore the Dutch Golden Age through the lens of groundbreaking female artists who often outshone their male counterparts. \n6 Nov Rococo Rock Star: Rosalba Carriera\nCarriera was a canny businesswoman who revolutionised pastel painting\, captivated the Grand Tour elite\, and became an international cultural celebrity. \n20 Nov In the Court of Versailles: Élisabeth Vigée-Lebrun & Adélaïde Labille-Guiard\nCreating sensational portraits of their royal patrons\, the two top female painters in pre-Revolutionary France had nothing to be rivals about except that they both existed in a world not intended for them. \n4 Dec Angelica Kauffman: Prodigy\, Pioneer\nAngelica Kauffman\, a founding member of the Royal Academy\, achieved international renown as both a portrait and history painter. Why then has she been sidelined in art history?

SUMMARY:Fashionarte
DESCRIPTION:We don’t normally do fashion in magpie\, but we do have a soft spot for Goshopia and its founder Araceli Gallego\, repository and advocate respectively for sustainably-sourced don’t-scare-the-horses style in practical but very goodlooking wear\, mostly for women. And now Goshopia is offering a month-long exhibition at Chaka Arts’ place in Al Fahidi that “reimagines sustainable fashion as museum-worthy wearable art … FashionArte represents a significant milestone in Dubai’s sustainable fashion movement\, offering visitors the unique opportunity to experience eco-conscious fashion through an artistic lens while supporting ethical makers and designers”. \nSo\, “sustainable fashion as curated art pieces”? Ms Gallego says this “revolutionises the traditional retail experience”. At the very least it will be worth checking out some big claims … \nThe whole experience is very fashion-y\, with a catwalk and opening and closing parties (register in advance and you might get a ticket). There will also be weekly Fashion Majlis discussions: \n28 November 6pm Innovative Materials in Fashion register here\n5 December 6pm Circularity in Fashion register here\n12 December 6pm AI & Technology in Fashion register here \nTo 21 December.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Artist’s Rooms: Augustine Paredes
DESCRIPTION:Augustine Paredes’ artist’s room brings together his own personal histories and stories that explore his relationship to identity and family via his personal journey as a migrant\, navigating constantly between time\, places and identities. Gradually moving away from the camera as a main source of image-making\, he has embraced a more process-based approach that focuses on the inherent qualities and agency of materials used within his work. \nThe exhibition’s central work is Mother – a portrait of Marife\, an all-important figure in his life and one that embodies his connection to home and sense of belonging. Other works present traces of burns\, verses of poems\, paintings\, ink stains\, fibres\, pearls and wool threads. Together\, these works explore the artist’s reflections on guilt\, desire and devotion.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Arda Aslanian: Obscured / Untold Stories
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition for the self-taught Armenian-Jordanian artist who uses her meticulously crafted works to explore the intricacies between visibility and concealment\, using drapery as a metaphor for the complexities of human experience. This series of works delves into the delicate boundaries that define our personal narratives that are often left untold. The gallery comments that “Aslanian’s use of a single-colour gradation technique increases the viewer’s confusion regarding the symbolism of the scene and imposes silence on us. Perhaps this is what she seeks: silence in a world full of noise.”

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Negin Fallah\, Mai Al Remeithi\, Annie Kurkdjian: Contours of Belonging
