SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Ghizlane Agzenaï: Kaleidoscope
DESCRIPTION:The Moroccan artist’s debut Middle East exhibition is described by the gallery as “a milestone event that offers a unique opportunity to experience Agzenaï’s vibrant and dynamic art in person”. On show is a collection of Agzenaï’s signature totems and geometric abstractions\, crafted to blur the boundaries of reality blur – “every line\, angle\, and hue in Agzenaï’s work serves as a gateway to a deeper understanding of the self and the world around us”.

SUMMARY:Christiane Peschek: Fever
DESCRIPTION:The artist’s first solo in the UAE is a multisensory exhibition inspired by environmental and emotional desert landscapes\, and more specifically “the consequences of global warming and the idea of planetary and bodily fever dreams”; or\, as the gallery puts it\, the exhibition “explores extreme emotional and physical states through the lens of the Internet’s impact on culture and environment … In a large-scale takeover of the two-story gallery\, Fever blends sound\, scent\, heat\, and visuals to create an experience that explores the inner space between heat-induced delirium\, techno-shamanism – a movement combining technology\, music\, and spirituality – and fiction”. On the ground floor of the gallery\, Peschek will showcase new portraits on silk created in dialogue with AI and sculptures developed through glass blowing and 3D printing techniques\, while the mezzanine will be transformed into an immersive healing oracle installation. \nChristiane Peschek features as the third cycle of the NIKA Project Space research programme\, in line with the gallery’s desire to platform artistic discourse and experimentation. The two previous iterations had London-based artist Nika Neelova investigating the ancient marine life that once inhabited Sharjah’s Jebel Buhais archaeological site; and Katya Muromtseva interviewed women migrants in Dubai\, whose profoundly personal stories formed the foundation of her solo show at the gallery during a month-long residency. \nTo 11 January. \nAbove: Christiane Peshek\, from the series Transitions (2023): installation view

SUMMARY:Alymamah Rashed: Mirrors from the Sidewalk
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition of Alymamah Rashed’s latest work. A new series of large-scale watercolour and acrylic canvases\, it’s shaped by the belief that bodily connection to specific environments and elements can facilitate spiritual awakening. Rashed reflects on the immersion of the body in water\, soil and sky\, embracing floral elements and the everyday objects that she collects from the sidewalks of her hometown Kuwait. \nTo 10 November. \nAbove: Alymamah Rashed\, I have fixed your roots in the soils of my earth to reach your 7 skies (for I am near your heart) (2024)

SUMMARY:Seulgi Kim: Ride the Wave
DESCRIPTION:Seulgi Kim’s first solo exhibition in the Middle East brings to Volery Gallery a deeply personal exploration of her emotional journey\,. The sea\, which plays a central role in her work\, becomes a metaphor for life’s turbulence and tranquillity; her depictions of crashing waves and steady rocks speak to resilience in the face of life’s challenges. And they feature her characteristic figures\, navigating the passage from childhood to adulthood\, boys and girls learning how to fit into their own individual adulthood – the innocence of youth is juxtaposed with the weight of adult responsibilities. To 8 November. \nAbove: Seulgi Kim\, Blue Dragon (2024)

SUMMARY:Hour Eternal – Emirati Abstraction
DESCRIPTION:An interesting show of works by 14 Emirati artists who have played a role in shaping contemporary art in the Emirates. Curated by Michaela Watrelot\, it has loans from the Ministry of Culture\, private collectors\, and the artists themselves. The curator says the pieces on display all reflect on the duality of time: it is both fleeting and everlasting. In particular\, the works deal with the relationship between time\, tradition and contemporary identity\, and by extension offer an insight into the wider cultural identity of the UAE. \nThe show does indeed include an impressive selection of big names from Emirati contemporary art. Among them are four of the ‘five’ – Hassan and Hussain Sharif\, Mohammed Kazem and Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim (only Abdullah Al Saadi is missing from that group). They’re joined by work from Abdul Qader Al Rais\, Mona Al Khaja\, Salma Al Marri\, Mohammed Al Qassab\, Abdulrahim Salem\, Noor Al Suwaidi\, Najat Makki\, Shaikha Al Mazrou\, Khalid Al Banna and Ebtisam Abdulaziz. \nTo mid February. \nAbove: Najat Makki\, Untitled (2006: courtesy UAE Ministry of Culture)

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Mouza Al Hamrani: Homepage
DESCRIPTION:The first solo show by the Emirati illustrator and multimedia designer reflects the duality of the digital age — “celebrating the opportunities the internet has provided\, while also expressing the exhaustion and apprehension that come with a prolonged digital presence. \n“I aimed to capture this nuanced experience\, inviting viewers to reflect on their own relationship with the digital world. It’s a portrait of my own experience of the internet in this region during my formative years\, all the way to the current day.” \nMouza Al Hamrani is one of only four UAE-based artists to be accepted for Tashkeel’s popular Critical Practice Programme last year and worked with a mentor to produce a series of artworks that blend of traditional illustration and cutting-edge digital artistry. \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Magnus Gjoen: The Future of The Past
DESCRIPTION:Gjoen invites the viewer to explore the delicate balance between history and modernity\, as envisioned through a distinctive style that fuses street art influences with pop culture and fine art – symbols and themes from the Renaissance and Baroque are reimagined to challenge traditional views of beauty. That aesthetic isn’t too surprising; after studying fine art and fashion design\, Gjoen worked with Vivienne Westwood en route to a full-time commitment to art rather than fashion. The gallery is suitably bullish: “The Future of The Past … transports viewers across timelines\, challenging the thought of what was\, what is and perhaps what could be”.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Sébastien Labrunie: Brèche
DESCRIPTION:“An organic dive through matter\, light and memory\,” says the blurb. “This hybrid narrative sculpture blurs the line between macro and micro perspectives while connecting moments and places of the past.” Labrunie’s first large-scale immersive installation (first seen back in 2019)\, Brèche is a very personal audiovisual work that combines techniques from video games and VR with analogue and digital glitch art. The sound design by the Taiwanese sound artist Lu Yi is a vital element\, merging cinematic drones with ‘noise music’ “As the 3D collage sequences of Brèche expand\, the viewer is slowly drawn into the centre of the ‘breach’ where matter and memories dissolve into pulses of primal\, raw energy …”

SUMMARY:Areej Rajab: Interwoven
DESCRIPTION:New work by the Bahraini artist\, based on an interplay of colours and emotions where the intricate patterns of human behaviour are delicately overlapped with the rhythms of nature: “she reveals the intricate beauty of natural forms and how they mirror the complexities of human emotions\,” says the gallery. By layering colours\, Areej reflects how human emotions and experiences intertwine\, much like patterns in nature. \n“I find inspiration in nature as it is the purest source of colour\,” says the artist. “My focus is on colour combinations and how they blend and overlap rather than just colour itself\, much like how human behaviour and emotions often intertwine and influence one another. Different cultures can interpret colour in various ways\, which adds another layer of meaning to my work”. \nTo 10 November.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Majd Kurdieh: Butterflies
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the Aleppo-born Lebanese-based artist with a very distinctive practice – he paints with cartoon-like characters to talk about the current state of the world\, usually a boy (Fasoon) and a girl (Fasooneh) who are always smiling despite the fact that their world is filled with hardships; they share it with a group of animal characters called the Very Scary Butterfly Gang\, Their main mission is to combat the sadness of the world with their sole weapon\, the flower. For the current show\, Kurdieh’s fifth at Fann A Porter by our count\, he’s concentrating on the butterflies: “In the hope of a future in which the field comes back laughing and the seas are more merciful\, when the fires go out and the birds return to their nests\, and a young painter less careless than me comes and says to you: ‘I painted the butterfly because I love the colour of its wings'”.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Alia Ahmad: Aspects [مظاهر]
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition in the UAE for the Saudi Arabian artist presents a new body of paintings and watercolours that seeks to “peel back the layers in order to expose her personal vocabulary”. Her point of departure is the rapidly changing environment of her home city\, Riyadh\, where traditional ways of life exist alongside industrialisation and modernisation and where native plant life and cultural art forms thrive within one of the world’s fastest growing urban settings. Ahmad’s new works deconstruct the elements that make up her world; “with abstracted vegetal\, floral\, geometric shapes and motifs sometimes resembling stones\, flowers\, and others webs or micro-structures\, she creates her own lexicon of forms … on an intimate scale”.

SUMMARY:Putting the Record Straight: The Lost Women of Art History
DESCRIPTION:Fourth in this seven-part lecture series by art historian Rose Balston on female artists from the 16th through to the 18th century – “women who have not only been side-lined\, but literally (and shockingly) blocked out of history”\, mainly by the (male) custodians of 19th-century art history. The talks run every other Wednesday to 4 December from 11am to 12.30pm; individual sessions are AED 250 per person\, but there’s a deal for all seven at AED 1\,650. \nThe schedule: \n11 Sept Blazing the Trail: Sofonisba Anguissola\nIn the 16th century\, Sofonisba Anguissola painted her way out of domesticity to unprecedented fame\, earning accolades from (among others) Michelangelo and Van Dyck. \n25 Sept The Secret Renaissance: The Women of Bologna\nThe female artists of 16th and 17th century Bologna flourished in this city and became part of its cultural identity. \n9 Oct Artemisia Gentileschi: Art and Power\nThe most famous of all female artists from this period\, Artemisia secured her place among the Baroque masters with astonishing paintings that powerfully reflect her personal struggles and cultural triumphs. \n23 Oct Women who Shaped the Dutch Golden Age: Legacy Reclaimed\nExplore the Dutch Golden Age through the lens of groundbreaking female artists who often outshone their male counterparts. \n6 Nov Rococo Rock Star: Rosalba Carriera\nCarriera was a canny businesswoman who revolutionised pastel painting\, captivated the Grand Tour elite\, and became an international cultural celebrity. \n20 Nov In the Court of Versailles: Élisabeth Vigée-Lebrun & Adélaïde Labille-Guiard\nCreating sensational portraits of their royal patrons\, the two top female painters in pre-Revolutionary France had nothing to be rivals about except that they both existed in a world not intended for them. \n4 Dec Angelica Kauffman: Prodigy\, Pioneer\nAngelica Kauffman\, a founding member of the Royal Academy\, achieved international renown as both a portrait and history painter. Why then has she been sidelined in art history?

SUMMARY:Arda Aslanian: Obscured / Untold Stories
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition for the self-taught Armenian-Jordanian artist who uses her meticulously crafted works to explore the intricacies between visibility and concealment\, using drapery as a metaphor for the complexities of human experience. This series of works delves into the delicate boundaries that define our personal narratives that are often left untold. The gallery comments that “Aslanian’s use of a single-colour gradation technique increases the viewer’s confusion regarding the symbolism of the scene and imposes silence on us. Perhaps this is what she seeks: silence in a world full of noise.” \nTo 30 November. \nAbove: Arda Aslanian\, Symphony (2024)

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Sarah Alagroobi: Slanted Dreamscape
DESCRIPTION:Alagroobi’s evocative\, highly textured landscapes provide a glimpse into “a world where reality and imagination intersect”. Her practice celebrates the physical and metaphysical\, using layers of acrylic to sculpt imagined landscapes that blur the boundaries between the tangible and the abstract; the gallery says her paintings “offer a direct and unfiltered representation of her artistic process\, presenting depth and surface in their most authentic forms”.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE I Wish To Be Happy\, I Want To Be Yellow
DESCRIPTION:A group show for an eclectic collection of artists — Mohammad Alfaraj\, Aminah Al huqail\, Dalia Baassiri\, Richi Bhatia\, Jumairy\, Tamara Kalo\, Adrian Pepe\, and Alia Zaal. The common factor is that they “cultivate a visceral and intimate relationship with nature” and “blur temporal boundaries between presence and absence\, fullness and lack\, past and present\, engaging in generative rites that foster creation\, fertility\, and renewal … Bodies morph\, adapt\, and redefine themselves\, existing in states of transition and transformation … They embody the power of attraction and interaction\, functioning as entities that react and interact with their surroundings”. \nFighting though the thickets of verbiage\, this looks like it could be a top show for the new season: the participants are all interesting\, provocative artists with something to say and novel ways of saying it. \n

DESCRIPTION:Hala Dabaji’s distinctive paintings feature an androgynous character called Obu (“he has a challenging spirit”) created in acrylic on canvas and more recently watercolour on fabric; the flatness and stylised hand gestures suggest a form of communicating that echoes shadow play. SUMMARY:Vian Sora: House of Pearls
DESCRIPTION:New paintings and works on paper from the Louisville-based artist that explore pearls as “a metaphor for achieving stability and the needed structural integrity for life itself to regenerate”. Drawing on her experiences as a war survivor and immigrant (Iraqi-born\, she sought refuge in Dubai following the US invasion of Iraq) Sora reflects on the uncertainty and shifting boundaries of existence\, capturing the physical\, mental\, and emotional toll experienced across nations\, cultures\, and time. “Her paintings reveal the complex nature of identity and seek cohesion like the iridescent layers of a natural pearl” says the gallery. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Randa Maddah: Hanging Gardens
DESCRIPTION:The inaugural solo exhibition of the Syrian visual artist whose practice spans painting\, drawing\, sculpture\, video\, and installation. In this recent work\, Maddah repurposes the vocabulary of traditional miniature paintings to depict “dream-like scenes that negotiate themes of belonging\, resilience\, rootedness\, rebirth\, and renewal through natural elements … The work embodies the notion of a spirit shaped by harsh and absurd realities\, exploring themes of ecstasy\, liberation\, and reincarnation … Reflecting on transcendence and rebirth\, Maddah suggests that the body is merely a garment the soul sheds to wear anew\, offering hope that death is simply a gateway to a new life”.

SUMMARY:Three Tired Tigers
DESCRIPTION:Bringing together more than 40 artists and collectives\, drawing from politics\, history\, economics and urbanism\, this exhibition takes a playful yet serious approach to how animals navigate and thrive within the gaps of urban environments. What happens when animals escape their enclosures or conflict with humans\, shifting from admired symbol to nuisance\, from pet to pest? Visitors are challenged to rethink coexistence\, ecology and the importance of recognising animals as part of our everyday geographies. \nFeaturing works by artists engaging with urban animals across different regions – from Dubai’s many street cats to stories of displaced dogs\, disappearing lions and bears living atop mountains – the exhibition invites us to view our cities and landscapes from a (mostly) four-legged perspective. It is curated by Lucas Morin. \nWorks by: Noor Abuarafeh; Asim Abu Shakra; Abbas Akhavan; Farah Al Qasimi; Heba Y Amin; Atelier HOKO; Sophia Balagamwala; Sammy Baloji; Jumana Bayazid El Husseini; Anna Boghiguian; Kasper Bosmans; Cheng Xinhao; Ali Cherri; Chim↑Pom from Smappa!Group; Bouie Choi; Jason Dodge; Mohieddine Ellabbad; Annika Eriksson; Simryn Gill; Kadhim Hayder; Khalid Jauffer; Hayv Kahraman; Sudhira Karna\, Madhumala Mandal\, Rebati Mandal\, Selo Yadav and Sumitra Yadav; Kee Ya Ting and David Tan\, with Migrant Ecologies Projects; Candice Lin; Ali Milad; Benoît Piéron; Pilar Quinteros; Walid Raad; Khalil Rabah; Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook; Lin May Saeed; Mark Salvatus; Walid Siti; Shimabuku; Mariam Suhail; Risham Syed; Robert Zhao Renhui (The Institute of Critical Zoologists). \nTo 16 March. \nAbove: Asim Abu Shakra\, Beast\, 1986.
