SUMMARY:The Territory Dreams Back
DESCRIPTION:A group exhibition of newly commissioned and recent works by Rajni Perera\, Sancintya Mohini Simpson\, Soma Surovi Jannat\, Karan Shrestha and Rain Wu\, five artists who offer different perspectives on our relationship with place. \nSays the gallery: “The Territory Dreams Back moves between mythology and memory\, migration and ecology\, political power and the systems through which places are mapped and organised. At its heart is the idea that places are shaped by more than their physical geography. Land and water hold histories and memories; stories and beliefs influence how landscapes are understood; political decisions affect who can access and control land; and maps and infrastructure can change the environments they set out to describe …” \nTo 15 January. \nRight: Rajni Perera\, Dark Matter (2025)

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Fellow Travellers
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition conceived and curated by Prof Omar Kholeif\, featuring Sonia Balassanian\, Jai Chuhan\, Luísa Correia Pereira\, Lalitha Lajmi\, Irene Scheinmann and Omar Kholeif himself. \nDeveloped from nearly two decades of Kholeif’s research\, writing and relationships with artists\, the exhibition is an ambitious-sounding attempt to “re-dream the routes\, flows and counter-flows of modernity through the present”. As Kholief puts it: “Here\, the diasporic imagination is reclaimed\, illuminating the possibilities of shared movement—literal and metaphorical\, exploring how it affects artistic method. Fellow Travellers is a parcel\, a constitutive act of worlding\, of dreaming …” \nFellow Travellers brings landmark and rarely seen works from five artists into dialogue with Kholeif’s own paintings; painting is seen as a connective thread through which diasporic histories\, oral traditions\, symbolic languages and forms of ancestral knowledge can be recovered and reimagined.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY A Way Through: Archive of Resilience
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition born out of the question: how will this time be remembered and who will tell the stories of the people who live here? It’s one of the outcomes of Kutubna’s initiative Documenting Culture in the Gulf in a Time of War\, an oral history project centring the experiences of diverse people living in the Khaleej. More than 40 artists and other contributors from different generations and cultural backgrounds are showing 70 works\, including journals\, poems\, short stories and publications\, embroidery\, crochet\, collage\, paintings\, digital works and photographs; their contributions speak of resilience\, protection\, unity\, faith\, gratitude\, and hope\, while also reflecting moments of fear and uncertainty and a deeper connection to home.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY All Manner of Experiments: Legacies of the Baghdad Modern Art Group
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Nada Shabout of NYUAD’s al Mawrid Arab Center for the Study of Art\, this exhibition investigates and celebrates the work and influence of one of the most important art movement of the mid-Century Middle East. Dr Shabout brings together work by the artists from the Baghdad Modern Art Group\, as well as those who the group influenced both at the time and in later generations. \nEstablished in 1951 by two of Iraq’s most influential artists\, Jewad Selim (1919–1961) and Shakir Hassan Al Said (1925–2004)\, the Baghdad Modern Art Group grew to engage many of Iraq’s leading artists\, architects\, poets\, and more; together\, they sought to develop a new art form that reflected the secularised\, modern society emerging from the dismantling of the Ottoman Empire. Says the gallery: “Artists questioned the ability of traditional ‘Islamic art’ practices to present their contemporary realities\, searching for a more effective visual language. In this context\, modern art provided a conduit for exploration and was perceived by Iraqi artists as a global space of shared humanity …” \nAt the same time\, those artists were conscious of their role in developing a sense of identity for their newly formed nation\, alongside broader decolonization processes. “This set the stage for Iraq’s so-called golden age of the 1950s: a time of maturation for a generation of artists pivotal in initiating rigorous standards of art theory and practice\, thus charting new possibilities for future generations.” \nArtists included in the show: Faraj Abbo\, Sadik Kwaish Alfraji\, Himat Mohammad Ali\, Rasoul Alwan\, Suad al-Attar\, Qahtan Awni\, Dia al-Azzawi\, Bogus Bablanian\, Amar Dawod\, Ghassan Ghaib\, Faiq (Faeq) Hassan\, Mohammed Ghani Hikmat\, Jabra Ibrahim Jabra\, Rand Abdul Jabbar\, Fouad Jihad\, Saadi Al Kaabi\, Ardash Kakafian\, Salma Khoury\, Hanaa Malallah\, Mahmoud Obaidi\, Widad al-Orfali\, Khalid al-Rahal\, Kareem Risan\, Miran al-Saadi\, Mahmoud Sabri\, Naziha Salim\, Nizar (Nazar) Salim\, Shakir Hassan Al Said\, Delair Shaker\, Jewad Selim\, Lorna Selim\, Walid Siti\, Ismail Fattah (Al-Turk)\, Madiha Umar\, Khalil al-Ward\, Nazar Yahya.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Juma Alhaj: Revelation
DESCRIPTION:The first institutional solo exhibition by Emirati artist Juma Alhaj is the culmination of his participation in 421 Arts Campus’ Artistic Development Program. Grounded in reading\, journaling\, and philosophical inquiry\, it explores themes of reflection\, solitude\, and self-discovery; the exhibition marks “a significant and ambitious evolution in his practice” according to the gallery\, expanding beyond painting into installation for the first time. \nVisitors experience it barefoot (the space is carpeted); throughout the exhibition\, Alhaj’s abstract inscriptions\, encompassing both writing and image\, extend across glass\, fabric\, light\, and architecture – “shifting with the environment and the movement of visitors through the exhibition”. \n

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY 100 Years of Paul Guiragossian
DESCRIPTION:A landmark retrospective for one of the key modernist painters to emerge from the Levant in the twentieth century. Alongside significant works drawn primarily from the artist’s estate\, many travelling outside Lebanon for the very first time\, the exhibition – the first significant retrospective for Guiragossian since 2013 – includes archival photographs\, personal documents\, and other rarely seen materials that provide an intimate portrait of the artist. \nStructured as a chronological journey\, the exhibition traces Guiragossian’s artistic evolution from his early years in an Armenian family shaped by displacement and migration\, including the 1948 relocation from Jaffa to Lebanon\, through to global recognition. It’s the keystone of From a Shared Ground\, an homage to Lebanon through three concurrent exhibitions that explore how artists across generations have drawn upon experiences of homeland\, displacement\, memory and belonging. \n

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Roots Before Petals
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition that brings contemporary UAE-based artist Lana Khayat into dialogue with Lebanese modernists Etel Adnan and Helen Khal\, linking distinct practices across generations of Lebanese artists. Says the gallery: “Their work differs in scale and sensibility\, yet each built an abstract visual language from the natural motif and shared engagement with the memory of homeland”. \nThis is one of three concurrent BFAF exhibitions under the title From a Shared Ground\, an homage to Lebanon that explores how artists across generations have drawn upon experiences of homeland\, displacement\, memory and belonging. \n

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Artist's Room: Lulua Alyahya
DESCRIPTION:Marking her first solo exhibition in the UAE\, Lulua Alyahya’s Artist’s Room brings together new commissions\, loans and works from the Art Jameel Collection. Through her paintings\, Alyahya explores culturally embedded archetypes with tenderness\, humour and a critical inflection\, often engaging with representations of masculinity set against the natural and built environments of the Gulf; working on an intimate scale\, her layered\, gestural brushstrokes suggest a process of continual revision that contributes to the atmosphere and surreal quality of her paintings.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Artist's Room: Shezad Dawood
DESCRIPTION:Dawood’s New Dream Machine Project centres on a 3m-high rotating and flickering light sculpture\, an homage to artist and writer Brion Gysin’s Dreamachine; driving the mechanism is a perforated cylinder emitting pulses of light at the frequency of the brain’s alpha waves\, said to induce altered states of consciousness. Originally commissioned for the Abraaj Group Art Prize in 2011 and first presented at Art Dubai that same year\, the work is part of the Art Jameel Collection and has rarely been exhibited since. \nHere the sculpture is presented alongside two smaller Recyclages prototypes and archival materials tracing the project’s history.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Artist's Room: Walid Siti
DESCRIPTION:This Artist’s Room traces forty years of Walid Siti’s practice\, including new sculptural commissions and material from the artist’s studio. Across his body of work\, structural forms mirror geological formations\, rising summits\, Mesopotamian ziggurats\, and the Tower of Babel\, all alluding to a persistent\, often reckless\, human drive toward ascension. A newly commissioned large-scale sculpture\, Registry of the Lived\, reflects on the troubled history of Kurdistan\, displayed alongside the War Series\, an early ensemble of drawings and etchings from the 1980s made during Siti’s years of exile.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Spices and Wonders: Sailing the Indian Ocean
DESCRIPTION:This spectacular exhibition follows a thousand years of maritime history and culture\, charting the routes that connected the civilisations of Africa\, Asia\, and beyond. It documents the evolution of navigation and the techniques that enabled adventurous sailors to explore the unknown; spices were the prize\, and as people travelled\, so did ideas and cultures. Spanning from Antiquity to the 17th century\, the exhibition explores centuries of trade\, movement and cultural exchange through displays of spices\, textiles\, ceramics and other special cargos which crossed the ocean. \nThe exhibition is presented in partnership with the National Museum of Asian Arts – Guimet in France; it is curated by Louvre Abu Dhabi’s Guilhem André and Claire Déléry\, Curator of the Chinese Ceramics collection at Guimet in Paris. A second edition of this touring exhibition will be presented at Guimet next year.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Artist's Room: Bani Abidi
DESCRIPTION:Bani Abidi’s Artist’s Room displays a single body of work\, Trembling hands (2024) – a series of portraits of artists\, journalists\, politicians\, lawyers\, doctors and civil society leaders who publicly spoke out against the genocide of Palestinians\, often using public platforms that exposed them to backlash\, censorship or repression. Drawn in 2024\, the portraits primarily refer to speeches made in late 2023 and early 2024 during the most brutal and deadly period of the Israeli onslaught on Gaza\, also characterised by widespread international inaction. Some of the speakers depicted by Abidi are Palestinian; others spoke in solidarity.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Afrah Shafiq: Nobody Knows For Certain
DESCRIPTION:Afrah Shafiq’s Nobody Knows for Certain is a multimedia game that draws on the illustrated children’s books that were distributed widely in India by the USSR\, highlighting a little-known chapter of Cold War-era cultural exchange. These richly illustrated Soviet fairytales and folk stories shaped many childhood memories and are now the subject of a thriving subculture of collectors across South Asia. \nNobody Knows For Certain is an anthology of stories developed through a field research fellowship with the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art\, Moscow\, alongside an archive Shafiq has built of Soviet children’s books across Indian languages and oral testimonies gathered during her research. Sitting between interactive fiction\, documentary and point-and-click adventure games\, the work invites players to collect books virtually\, find portals from one tale to the next and move through archival findings and historical backdrops that trace how two seemingly disparate lands were closely tied to one another.
