SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Talal Moualla: The Table of Absence
DESCRIPTION:For more than five decades\, the Syrian artist\, poet\, and critic Talal Moualla has approached the image not simply as representation\, but (says the gallery) “as a form of thought … Moving between painting\, criticism\, poetry and research\, his practice asks how the visible can carry an idea\, shape consciousness\, and open new ways of understanding human existence. The Table of Absence brings this lifelong enquiry to one of its most distilled forms”. \nIn Moualla’s work\, the table is a symbolic structure\, a place where human beings recognise one another’s presence – “around it coexist memory and mourning\, intimacy and estrangement\, love and betrayal\, birth and death … Yet as the enquiry deepens\, even the table begins to disappear. It is reduced to a circle\, a plate\, a geometric sign\, a pale field\, until it approaches emptiness itself”. So “the image no longer delivers an answer; it becomes a way of thinking through the question”.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Hisham Sharif: Allusive Veil
DESCRIPTION:Sharif’s first solo exhibition in the UAE presents an autobiographical and very personal series of works about the struggles of private and artist life in a closed society – “a vulnerable\, nuanced presentation of life”. The Bahraini artist uses colour to convey privacy and intimacy\, “expressive hues that meld harsh truths with illusions of what could be … Sharif’s approach ensures that his depiction of these taboos is conveyed through humble depictions that preserve a certain Oriental sensibility\, avoiding the shock value or censorship they might otherwise provoke. The scenes are all about ambiance\, a haze of what was\, what is\, and what could be”.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Amna AlMemari\, Lubnah Ansari\, MG\, Andrew Riad: Infrared
DESCRIPTION:This group show is the culmination of the second edition of NIKA Project Space’s Open Studio programme: four artists based in the UAE were invited to develop new bodies of work in dialogue with the space\, one another\, and the public. Curated by Rahel Aima\,  the exhibition brings together projects developed during the residency themed around the observer effect – “in which a wave becomes a particle and the body becomes a tongue through ritual\, accumulation\, and the heat of the eye … Rather than producing works in response to a prescribed theme\, the participating artists continued investigations proposed during the Open Studio application process. Over the course of the residency\, these projects evolved through experimentation\, research\, conversation\, and material exploration\, offering a glimpse into artistic practice as an unfolding process”.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Stephan Kaluza: From Dust to Bloom
DESCRIPTION:Stephan Kaluza’s practice is fundamentally concerned with depictions of nature\, either as hyper-realistic oils or near-abstract renderings. These two modes of painting should be seen as different stages of the same subject in a process of transformation: disruptions creep in\, and appearances prove deceptive. Says the gallery: “At first glance\, the paintings appear to be precise\, almost preservative images of an intact world – until a second layer emerges\, sharply challenging what is being seen”.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Oussama Diab: Reimagined
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the Palestinian-Syrian-Dutch artist that reinterprets celebrated masterpieces from Western art. Diab revisits iconic works by artists including Picasso\, van Gogh\, Michelangelo and van Dyck\, applying his own distinctive visual language to allow the images to speak to contemporary realities. Highlights of the exhibition are two striking reinterpretations of Picasso’s ‘Guernica’\, alongside ‘La Coiffure’ also after Picasso\, two sunflower paintings inspired by van Gogh\, and reinterpretations of Anthony van Dyck’s ‘Jupiter and Antiope’ and ‘Moses and the Serpent’.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Bernar Venet: Sculptures\, Furniture and Works on Paper
DESCRIPTION:A survey of works by the French artist\, “one of the most restless practitioners of his generation” as the gallery has it. Since the early 1960s Venet unusually broad range of media has included tar poured on to canvas and cardboard\, a heap of industrial coal claimed as sculpture\, paintings and drawings built from mathematical equations and scientific diagrams\, sound recordings\, photography\, performance\, poetry and stage design – and\, from the 1980s onward\, the Corten steel Arcs\, Angles and Indeterminate Lines for which he is now best known. This exhibition includes examples of three of those: sculptures in steel are shown alongside Venet’s furniture\, which translates the geometry of the sculptures into functional form\, and a group of works on paper that trace the conceptual logic running beneath it all.

SUMMARY:Salah Elmur: Just as the Heart of a Mango is a Stone
DESCRIPTION:Bringing together paintings\, archival photographs\, sketches and ephemera produced after 2018\, this exhibition offers an immersive encounter with Salah Elmur’s world\, “one where memory\, landscape and identity merge and ripple through time” as the Jameel puts it. \nThrough paintings that intertwine memory and myth\, Elmur reflects on his upbringing near the Blue Nile. These build upon the photographic legacy of his family’s Studio Kamal in Khartoum; Elmur repurposes archival images\, offering subjects who are captured twice\, once through film and again in painting\, a new way of being seen. \nCurated by Zain Al Saie and Qutouf Elobaid. \nTo 14 March. \nImage: Salah Elmur\, Fire Behind the Mountain (2025)

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Artists’ Rooms: Kamruzzaman Shahdin
DESCRIPTION:A monumental one-room installation that restages the Bangladeshi artist’s The River Remembers. Originally commissioned by the Diriyah Biennale Foundation and created in 2023\, this large-scale textile work has handcrafted threads mapping the colour of the water of the Teesta and the Brahmaputra\, two rivers flowing through the Bengal delta. Engraved brass disks convey the memories and migration stories of two women in the artist’s life whose own lives were strongly marked by the river.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Alaa Itani: A Momentum for the Horizon
DESCRIPTION:A visual meditation on the horizon as both boundary and promise\, a visible line that remains perpetually distant. Alaa Itani’s solo show brings together reverse glass paintings of horizons\, blurred landscapes\, and moving cloud formations; he explores landscape as acts of temporal displacement\, a process informed in part by his work as a researcher and archivist through which he has closely encountered the work of Arab modernist painters – especially the Lebanese artist Rafic Charaf (1932-2003).

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Tirdad Hashemi and Soufia Erfanian: I Bloom Where You Hold Me
DESCRIPTION:Collaborative works from Tirdad Hashemi and Soufia Erfanian’s ongoing Flower series\, unfolding across gallery walls covered with hand-drawn graffiti; rooted in the artists’ shared and individual experiences\, the works consider what it means to care for\, sustain and grow alongside one another. For Hashemi and Erfanian\, tending to plants\, relationships and artistic practice all share a common faith in growth. And even amid destruction\, flowers return and spring cannot be stopped:the act of tending becomes a method of resistance. \nPrimarily oil pastel on paper\, the drawings use a rough and immediate visual language. Flowers are built from loose\, gestural marks; colours bleed as figurative scenes appear almost like small windows embedded within wild fields. The process is similarly intertwined. Hashemi and Erfanian move freely across the same surface; one may begin a work and the other finish. At other times\, their marks overlap as they work simultaneously.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Bénédicte Gimonnet: What We Carry Becomes the Terrain
DESCRIPTION:Aisha Alabbar Gallery’s newly renovated space reopens with a solo exhibition by the UAE-based French artist that features paintings\, screen prints\, drawings and textile works. The theme is a pivotal journey to Peru and a renewed engagement with the roots that have long informed her practice; the rainforest\, in particular\, is treated as “a site of reckoning\, where recollection\, imagination and lived experience converge … Windows\, façades and thresholds surface within dense vegetation\, setting the human impulse to define and contain against everything around it that refuses a fixed boundary”. \nThe exhibition also introduces the Gran Eco series\, with tall vertical works isolating personally significant sites from countries where Gimonnet has lived (“an echo implies distance\, delay\, memory and transformation\, a place returning altered …”

SUMMARY:Artist’s Garden: Amphibious Timelapse by the Rice Brewing Sisters Club
DESCRIPTION:Amphibious Timelapse by South Korean collective the Rice Brewing Sisters Club (RBSC) is the 2026-2028 Artist’s Garden commission at the Jameel – the Artist’s Garden being a space for artists to create\, cultivate and experiment with the conceptual limits of the ‘garden’ through a research-led commissioning process that responds to local and regional environmental concerns. \nRBSC is an artist collective established in 2018 exploring the notion of ‘social fermentation’ as an artistic form and work across visual art\, performance\, writing\, oral history\, ecological thinking and ‘auntie’s wisdom’. Amphibious Timelapse traces a continuum between land and sea; its guiding question “how are amphibious beings interconnected?” directs attention to the plants at the soil–sea interface. Plants such as mangroves and other halophytes resist any firm division between earth and sea; sabkhas\, salt marshes and tidal flats are understood not as boundaries but as continuums — the shared medium through which the meeting of soil and sea is sustained\, negotiated and made legible. \nStructured over two years\, Amphibious Timelapse unfolds across phases\, functioning as a garden\, a lab and a kitchen that is home to local species of halophytes. These plants embody different tactics of living with\, rather than against\, arid saline soil and salty coastal wetlands that define UAE’s distinctive ecology. Through them\, RBSC traces amphibious adaptability\, resilience and kinship with their salty landscapes. \nCurated by Daniya Jawwad and Indranjan Banerjee. \nTo 27 September 2028.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Bashar Khalaf: The Field of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Two series of works\, Junk Garden and Protective Shield\, from the Ramallah-born artist. “The Field of Dreams is an exploration of formations of ‘steel’ in the public space from the perspective of the relationship between the self\, the object\, and the other” says the gallery. “It can be viewed as an interactive space with the fragile reality in which humanity lives.” \nKhalaf’s dreaming energy gives steel junk – bulldozers\, vehicles\, surveillance cameras – an chance for self-reinvention; it confronts the machine with its own existence\, giving it a tragic form and allowing it reposition itself over time. The garbage bins in Protective Shield were used during the First Intifada to block street and provide shelter from bullets ; in contrast\, the colonial system used steel barrels filled with cement to seal off the entrances to villages and camps.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Rana Begum: Taking Form
DESCRIPTION:Rana Begum brings her textile works to The Third Line for the first time. Her fifth solo exhibition at the gallery features a new body of large-scale wool tapestries presented alongside works on linen\, paper and MDF\, all reflecting the artist’s longstanding engagement with abstraction and minimalism and continuing her exploration of light through new materials and forms. Her characteristic engagement with geometry runs throughout\, with forms suggesting patterns that extend beyond their physical boundaries. \n

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Manish Nai: In Search of Material Within Material
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition by the Mumbai-based artist; much of his work comes from what he has seen and handled there. Nai works with jute\, newspaper\, cardboard\, used clothing\, mosquito mesh and corrugated metal; he cuts\, folds\, compresses and layers these materials\, often through slow and repetitive processes. “Rather than hiding what they were originally used for\, he makes that history part of the work”.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Karima Al Shomely: Between a Fold and a Memory
DESCRIPTION:Karima Al Shomely’s work draws from the clothing\, textiles and adornments of Emirati women. The burqa is a recurring subject\, appearing in works that look at how it was made\, worn and passed down through generations; Al Shomely also works with traditional Emirati fabrics\, including Bou Tira\, Bu Glaym and Bu Teelah\, enlarging their patterns and remaking them in metal. Through photography\, sculpture\, textile and video\, she brings these materials and their histories into the present.

DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition by the Syrian artist that includes large-scale portraits\, a tile installation\, sculptures\, artist books\, and works on paper. At the centre of Tallaa’s practice is the face\, not as portrait or likeness\, but as witness; this exhibition\, curated by Celine Azem\, considers the traces that experience leaves behind on the face\, the body\, and “the materials we touch and are touched by”.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Katia Kameli: The Canticle of the Birds
DESCRIPTION:A solo presentation by the French-Algerian artist and filmmaker that reinterprets The Conference of the Birds\,a 12th-century epic poem by Farid ud-Din Attar\, in which a flock of birds search for a mighty ruler and ultimately find their strength within themselves. \nIn Kameli’s video Le Cantique des oiseaux (2022) actresses process while playing bird-shaped ceramic instruments\, an eerie procession that stands in sharp contrast to the urban environment of Paris. A follow-up film\, Le Cantique des oiseaux\, variation (2022)\, was staged in a seaside garden on the French Riviera; here\, the physical challenge of dancing while playing fragile ceramic instruments creates a visible tension between the performers’ bodies and the delicate artwork. The earthenware instruments are bird-shaped ocarinas\, created by Kameli with ceramicist Marie Picard; to bring these sculptural birds to life\, Kameli worked with composer Aurélie Sfez and choreographer Youness Anzane.

SUMMARY:Afrah Shafiq: Nobody Knows For Certain
DESCRIPTION:Afrah Shafiq’s Nobody Knows for Certain is a multimedia game that draws on the illustrated children’s books that were distributed widely in India by the USSR\, highlighting a little-known chapter of Cold War-era cultural exchange. These richly illustrated Soviet fairytales and folk stories shaped many childhood memories and are now the subject of a thriving subculture of collectors across South Asia. \nNobody Knows For Certain is an anthology of stories developed through a field research fellowship with the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art\, Moscow\, alongside an archive Shafiq has built of Soviet children’s books across Indian languages and oral testimonies gathered during her research. Sitting between interactive fiction\, documentary and point-and-click adventure games\, the work invites players to collect books virtually\, find portals from one tale to the next and move through archival findings and historical backdrops that trace how two seemingly disparate lands were closely tied to one another. \nTo 25 April.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Maggie Otieno: Sojourner – The Difference Is the Same
DESCRIPTION:New works by the Kenyan artist Maggie Otieno\, her first solo show here since the gallery began representing her in 2024 . Otieno’s practice centres on the transformation of reclaimed and distressed materials.; working across wood\, metal\, and mixed media\, her semi -abstract forms explore layered narratives of history\, memory\, human interaction\, and environmental survival. Her works function as vessels of remembrance and renewal\, grounding social and historical reflection in physical form. \nFeatured in the exhibition are new works based around railway sleepers\, symbols of East Africa’s colonial past. More than 150 years old\, these timbers travelled from India to Kenya for railway lines\, carrying with them the stories of travellers\, labourers\, and communities. Also included are works created during a residency at El Anatsui Studio in Ghana last summer. Sculptures made from fragments of wooden canoes bear traces of memory and passage; some are hinged to resemble books\, evoking the turning of a page and the opening of a new chapter.

SUMMARY:Artist's Room: Bani Abidi
DESCRIPTION:Bani Abidi’s Artist’s Room displays a single body of work\, Trembling hands (2024) – a series of portraits of artists\, journalists\, politicians\, lawyers\, doctors and civil society leaders who publicly spoke out against the genocide of Palestinians\, often using public platforms that exposed them to backlash\, censorship or repression. Drawn in 2024\, the portraits primarily refer to speeches made in late 2023 and early 2024 during the most brutal and deadly period of the Israeli onslaught on Gaza\, also characterised by widespread international inaction. Some of the speakers depicted by Abidi are Palestinian; others spoke in solidarity. \nTo 25 April.

SUMMARY:The Territory Dreams Back
DESCRIPTION:A group exhibition of newly commissioned and recent works by Rajni Perera\, Sancintya Mohini Simpson\, Soma Surovi Jannat\, Karan Shrestha and Rain Wu\, five artists who offer different perspectives on our relationship with place. \nSays the gallery: “The Territory Dreams Back moves between mythology and memory\, migration and ecology\, political power and the systems through which places are mapped and organised. At its heart is the idea that places are shaped by more than their physical geography. Land and water hold histories and memories; stories and beliefs influence how landscapes are understood; political decisions affect who can access and control land; and maps and infrastructure can change the environments they set out to describe …” \nTo 15 January. \nRight: Rajni Perera\, Dark Matter (2025)
