SUMMARY:Alaa Itani: A Momentum for the Horizon
DESCRIPTION:A visual meditation on the horizon as both boundary and promise\, a visible line that remains perpetually distant. Alaa Itani’s solo show brings together reverse glass paintings of horizons\, blurred landscapes\, and moving cloud formations; he explores landscape as acts of temporal displacement\, a process informed in part by his work as a researcher and archivist through which he has closely encountered the work of Arab modernist painters – especially the Lebanese artist Rafic Charaf (1932-2003). \nTo 4 November. \nRight: Alaa Itani\, A Momentum for the Horizon (2023)

SUMMARY:Sara Masinaei: Boundaries and Breaches
DESCRIPTION:Sara Masinaei’s solo show explores how urban spaces shape memory\, movement and lived experience: “through walking\, collecting found objects and recording traces of overlooked surfaces\, she treats the city’s ground as an active part of how we experience and navigate our surroundings”\, says the gallery. Her works include monoprints created by pressing canvas directly on to urban surfaces\, plus sculptural pieces that explore the tension between order and disruption. \nThis work results from Dom Arts’ Studio Support Programme\, introduced to gave artists space and time to develop their practices without requiring them to produce new work or meet predetermined outcomes. \nTo 11 October.

SUMMARY:Studio\, Wounds\, and Battles
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition by seven emerging UAE-based artists\, beneficiaries of Dom Arts’ Studio Support Programme (introduced to gave artists space and time to develop their practices without requiring them to produce new work or meet predetermined outcomes). \nThe programme gave each artist space and time to explore their practice without the pressure to produce a specific outcome\, allowing for experimentation\, uncertainty\, mistakes and new directions. The show has works by Joumana Mortada\, Meher Afroz Vahid\, Rabila Kidwai\, Aisha Alhammadi (work in progress\, right)\, Divyaaunshi Purohit and Teng Miras. Rather than presenting only finished works\, the exhibition offers a glimpse into the creative process by including experiments\, works in progress\, research and completed pieces developed during their time in the studios. \nTo 11 October.

SUMMARY:Tirdad Hashemi and Soufia Erfanian: I Bloom Where You Hold Me
DESCRIPTION:Collaborative works from Tirdad Hashemi and Soufia Erfanian’s ongoing Flower series\, unfolding across gallery walls covered with hand-drawn graffiti; rooted in the artists’ shared and individual experiences\, the works consider what it means to care for\, sustain and grow alongside one another. For Hashemi and Erfanian\, tending to plants\, relationships and artistic practice all share a common faith in growth. And even amid destruction\, flowers return and spring cannot be stopped:the act of tending becomes a method of resistance. \nPrimarily oil pastel on paper\, the drawings use a rough and immediate visual language. Flowers are built from loose\, gestural marks; colours bleed as figurative scenes appear almost like small windows embedded within wild fields. The process is similarly intertwined. Hashemi and Erfanian move freely across the same surface; one may begin a work and the other finish. At other times\, their marks overlap as they work simultaneously. \nTo 4 November. \nRight: Tirdad Hashemi and Soufia Erfanian\, Without undressing her\, I watched her unfold\, soft as a bloom becoming itself (2024)Without undressing her\, I watched her unfold\, soft as a bloom becoming itself (2024)

SUMMARY:Katia Kameli: The Canticle of the Birds
DESCRIPTION:A solo presentation by the French-Algerian artist and filmmaker that reinterprets The Conference of the Birds\,a 12th-century epic poem by Farid ud-Din Attar\, in which a flock of birds search for a mighty ruler and ultimately find their strength within themselves. \nIn Kameli’s video Le Cantique des oiseaux (2022) actresses process while playing bird-shaped ceramic instruments\, an eerie procession that stands in sharp contrast to the urban environment of Paris. A follow-up film\, Le Cantique des oiseaux\, variation (2022)\, was staged in a seaside garden on the French Riviera; here\, the physical challenge of dancing while playing fragile ceramic instruments creates a visible tension between the performers’ bodies and the delicate artwork. The earthenware instruments are bird-shaped ocarinas\, created by Kameli with ceramicist Marie Picard; to bring these sculptural birds to life\, Kameli worked with composer Aurélie Sfez and choreographer Youness Anzane. \nTo 11 November.

SUMMARY:Sharmila Samant: Loca-Cola
DESCRIPTION:Coke bottles seem identical\, but differ subtly from one country to another. These variations in taste and appearance highlight the simulacral nature of the Coca-Cola bottle – a semblance of an imagined universal ideal. The incursion of multinational brands into local markets reflects a form of neocolonisation; but despite limited technical facilities and economic constraints\, local recycling practices thrive out of necessity; local vendors\, often resourceful and inventive\, repurpose discarded branded bottles to package their own beverages. \nSharmila Samant began the Loca-Cola project in 2000; he collects glass Coca-Cola bottles from various countries and juxtaposes them with distinctly local flavours to explore the polemics of ‘local’ and ‘global’: “Is the ‘local’ inherently oppositional to the ‘global’\, or is it an intrinsic part of it?

SUMMARY:Eman Al Hashemi: The Horizon We Inherit
DESCRIPTION:Al Hashemi’s practice examines what it means to remain human within increasingly automated systems of production and consumption – especiallyy seen through urban life in the Emirates. Al Hashemi works across ceramics\, printmaking and painting\, “investigating the systems through which contemporary experience is organized: the routes that structure daily movement\, the artificial illuminations that shape public space\, and the habitual routines through which urban environments are encountered and internalised … Central to this inquiry is the sun\, which recurs throughout the exhibition as both a defining condition of life in the UAE and a means of thinking through the relationship between body\, landscape\, and the built environment”. \nRight: Eman Al Hashemi\, Shams I\, Shams II\, Shams III (2026)

SUMMARY:Bernar Venet: Sculptures\, Furniture and Works on Paper
DESCRIPTION:A survey of works by the French artist\, “one of the most restless practitioners of his generation” as the gallery has it. Since the early 1960s Venet unusually broad range of media has included tar poured on to canvas and cardboard\, a heap of industrial coal claimed as sculpture\, paintings and drawings built from mathematical equations and scientific diagrams\, sound recordings\, photography\, performance\, poetry and stage design – and\, from the 1980s onward\, the Corten steel Arcs\, Angles and Indeterminate Lines for which he is now best known. This exhibition includes examples of three of those: sculptures in steel are shown alongside Venet’s furniture\, which translates the geometry of the sculptures into functional form\, and a group of works on paper that trace the conceptual logic running beneath it all. \nTo 31 October.

SUMMARY:Abstractions: A Journey Between Islamic and Contemporary Art
DESCRIPTION:Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is preparing the local audience for its 11 December opening with a series of events “for the public to engage with artists\, ideas and conversations that are shaping the new museum”. The mini-package closes with artist Rachid Koraïchi and curator Abdelkader Damani discussing abstraction as “a shared artistic language across cultures and time … Through reflections on calligraphy\, geometry and contemporary artistic practice\, the programme will offer audiences fresh perspectives on the connection between Islamic heritage and contemporary art\, revealing the connections and exchanges that continue to shape artistic expression today”. Preregister here. \nWarning: the PR bumf gave Louvre Abu Dhabi as the location (which makes sense) but the registration form says Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (which doesn’t). Good luck …

SUMMARY:Fabian Philandrianos and Pascal Navarro: Beyond the Gaze
DESCRIPTION:“An exhibition exploring the perception and relationship between the viewer and the artwork … an invitation to discover what may appear when we take the time to look beyond the surface.” The two French artists offer a dialogue between the figurative and the abstract\, the intimate and the universal\, movement and stillness: “from the intensity of a human gaze to the vastness of an imagined landscape\, the works encourage us to slow down\, look again and allow perception to shift”. \nTo 14 October.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Mohamed Monaiseer: 85 Seconds To Midnight
DESCRIPTION:Monaiseer’s solo show examines history through cycles\, repetition and flows\, while testing the unstable boundary between imagination and reality. The title references the current status of the Doomsday Clock and its measurement of humanity’s proximity to catastrophe; notions of war\, occupation and imperial power have long animated his practice\, and here he considers how they recur across contexts and generations\, altering borders\, enemies and technologies while preserving familiar structures of domination. \nThe exhibition comprises drawings\, paintings\, sculptures and textile works\, as well as a video installation. Recurring motifs in these works are absorbed from literary fiction\, popular storytelling and contemporary media. And dark humour runs through them; for Monaiseer it is a means of examining the performance of power and the fantasies through which conflict can be romanticised\, rehearsed and projected. \nElsewhere\, pixelated figures and fragmented grids evoke the digital mediation of contemporary warfare and our era of misinformation\, in which information is increasingly manipulated and corrupted online. Monaiseer has previously engaged with the historical construction of conflict; in these works he considers how conflict reaches us through technology\, through compressed images\, screens\, news feeds and endlessly circulating footage\, producing realities that are experienced at a distance and often manipulated.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Habeeb Abu-Futtaim: The Ongoing Performance of Melancholia and Songs in Solitude
DESCRIPTION:Two interconnected exhibitions\, both curated by Mo Reda and supported by the Department of Painting and Printmaking at VCUarts Qatar. Together\, The Ongoing Performance of Melancholia and Songs in Solitude mark the culmination of a two-month residency at Bayt AlMamzar; they present several different bodies of work developed over the past ten years\, drawing from an artistic practice shaped by sustained research\, investigation\, and critical inquiry. \nWorking across painting\, installation\, performance\, video\, and writing\, Abu-Futtaim investigates the construction and performance of collective identities\, examining how inherited symbols\, political imaginaries\, and cultural narratives become internalized as expressions of belonging. Songs in Solitude reflects on the intimate space of artistic practice through playfulness\, imagination\, intimacy\, and selfhood; The Ongoing Performance of Melancholia turns outward to examine the inherited performances of collective identity and the burden of unrealized political futures. Between them the exhibitions move between the personal and the political\, revealing how solitude\, memory\, and collective imagination continually shape one another.

SUMMARY:A Way Through: Archive of Resilience
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition born out of the question: how will this time be remembered and who will tell the stories of the people who live here? It’s one of the outcomes of Kutubna’s initiative Documenting Culture in the Gulf in a Time of War\, an oral history project centring the experiences of diverse people living in the Khaleej. More than 40 artists and other contributors from different generations and cultural backgrounds are showing 70 works\, including journals\, poems\, short stories and publications\, embroidery\, crochet\, collage\, paintings\, digital works and photographs; their contributions speak of resilience\, protection\, unity\, faith\, gratitude\, and hope\, while also reflecting moments of fear and uncertainty and a deeper connection to home. \nTo 7 December.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Global Positioning System
DESCRIPTION:An ambitious large-scale group exhibition dedicated to mapping and navigation systems\, “telling stories of fast cars and donkeys\, spinning globes and street barricades\, cosmic highways and broken bridges … [it] delves into topographies\, transit lines and simulated landscapes to engage critically with the infrastructure of movement and navigation”. Set against real and imagined geographies and landscapes\, the exhibition asks questions about the infrastructures that enable transport and trade\, the promises of speed and progress\, the meaning of home\, and what ‘navigation’ means when the destination is not a place but a memory … It is curated by Indranjan Banerjee and Lucas Morin (both exhibition curators at the Jameel) and features 30 artists. A second ‘chapter’ of the exhibition runs at Hayy Jameel in Jeddah to 26 October featuring 22 artists – a third of whom are from the Dubai roster\, with new names making up the balance.

SUMMARY:Juma Alhaj: Revelation
DESCRIPTION:The first institutional solo exhibition by Emirati artist Juma Alhaj is the culmination of his participation in 421 Arts Campus’ Artistic Development Program. Grounded in reading\, journaling\, and philosophical inquiry\, it explores themes of reflection\, solitude\, and self-discovery; the exhibition marks “a significant and ambitious evolution in his practice” according to the gallery\, expanding beyond painting into installation for the first time. \nVisitors experience it barefoot (the space is carpeted); throughout the exhibition\, Alhaj’s abstract inscriptions\, encompassing both writing and image\, extend across glass\, fabric\, light\, and architecture – “shifting with the environment and the movement of visitors through the exhibition”. \nTo 10 January. \n

DESCRIPTION:A conversation moderated by Sarah Almehairi exploring Moza Al Mazrouei’s artistic practice across sculpture\, film\, mixed media\, writing\, and curation. Moving between research and fiction\, observation and participation\, the discussion touches on authorship\, selfhood\, and the structures of power that shape how we see and understand the world. \nThis part of the NYUAD Art Gallery’s Artist Talks\, an artist-to-artist conversation series founded and curated by Sarah Almehairi. SUMMARY:Fellow Travellers
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition conceived and curated by Prof Omar Kholeif\, featuring Sonia Balassanian\, Jai Chuhan\, Luísa Correia Pereira\, Lalitha Lajmi\, Irene Scheinmann and Omar Kholeif himself. \nDeveloped from nearly two decades of Kholeif’s research\, writing and relationships with artists\, the exhibition is an ambitious-sounding attempt to “re-dream the routes\, flows and counter-flows of modernity through the present”. As Kholief puts it: “Here\, the diasporic imagination is reclaimed\, illuminating the possibilities of shared movement—literal and metaphorical\, exploring how it affects artistic method. Fellow Travellers is a parcel\, a constitutive act of worlding\, of dreaming …” \nFellow Travellers brings landmark and rarely seen works from five artists into dialogue with Kholeif’s own paintings; painting is seen as a connective thread through which diasporic histories\, oral traditions\, symbolic languages and forms of ancestral knowledge can be recovered and reimagined. \nThe exhibition is accompanied by a limited-edition publication featuring original poetry and a curatorial essay. \nTo 30 November.

SUMMARY:Talal Moualla: The Table of Absence
DESCRIPTION:For more than five decades\, the Syrian artist\, poet\, and critic Talal Moualla has approached the image not simply as representation\, but (says the gallery) “as a form of thought … Moving between painting\, criticism\, poetry and research\, his practice asks how the visible can carry an idea\, shape consciousness\, and open new ways of understanding human existence. The Table of Absence brings this lifelong enquiry to one of its most distilled forms”. \nIn Moualla’s work\, the table is a symbolic structure\, a place where human beings recognise one another’s presence – “around it coexist memory and mourning\, intimacy and estrangement\, love and betrayal\, birth and death … Yet as the enquiry deepens\, even the table begins to disappear. It is reduced to a circle\, a plate\, a geometric sign\, a pale field\, until it approaches emptiness itself”. So “the image no longer delivers an answer; it becomes a way of thinking through the question”. \nTo 29 October.
