SUMMARY:Mohamed Yousif and Maggie Otieno: Solace in Soil
DESCRIPTION:A duo exhibition for Emirati artist Mohamed Yousif and Kenyan sculptor Maggie Otieno that “celebrates the grounded connections between the practices of the two artists and the cross-cultural exchange between the Middle East and Africa”. Or as curator Shamma Al Mheiri puts it\, “Maggie Otieno and Dr Mohamed Yousif share leitmotifs of expressing generational sentiments and experiences through tangible expressions. Perhaps distinct in visual identities\, Otieno and Dr Yousif manifest connections deeper than the aesthetic portrayals in a state of continual solace …” The gallery is equally effusive: “This exhibition fosters a symbiotic exchange between the artists and their artistic practices\, intimately linked to their earthy foundations\, enabling their work to converse and showcase the interconnectedness between the regions”. \nMohamed Yousif is regarded as a pioneer of UAE sculpture and is one of the founders of the Emirates Fine Art Society. His 3D work is typically carefully crafted and delicate wooden sculptures\, many woven out of palm tree fronds handpicked in the UAE desert. He has featured in several exhibitions\, including The National Pavilion of the UAE at the 2015 and 2017 Venice Biennales. \nMaggie Otieno characteristically works with long abstract figures comprised of distressed railway sleepers\, originally from India and used to lay the ‘iron snake’ railway line in Kenya at the end of the 19th century – carrying within them stories of travellers\, labourers and communities. “Through her deft manipulation of form and texture\, she endeavours to imbue her sculptures with a sense of temporal continuity\, affording them a palpable resonance with the viewer’s own lived experiences”. \nTo 6 October. \nAbove: Dr Mohamed Yousif\, Camel Movement Series (2005)

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Valdés
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition of works by Manolo Valdés\, the Spanish artist known for his unique approach of drawing from art history to create his paintings\, prints\, and sculptures in a signature style of pared-down forms and unrefined mark-making. Through meticulous reinterpretations of masterpieces by the likes of Velázquez\, Picasso\, and Matisse\, Valdés applies a modern sensibility that does link past and present.

SUMMARY:Surreal: Magical realism in animation & contemporary art of the Soviet & post Soviet space
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of Soviet animation film by Priit Parn\, Fyodor Khitruk\, Andrey Khrzhanovsky\, Yuri Norshtein\, and Robert Sahakyants; and post-soviet video art\, paintings\, installations\, objects and works on paper by Blue Noses\, Diana Kapizova\, Nikolay Koshelev\, Alina Kugush\, Katerina Lukina\, Kirill Makarov\, Kirill Mikhailin\, Slava Nesterov\, and Diana Shliman. \nSurreal considers a space in Soviet art where the grip of the state was weakened. Animators like Fyodor Khitruk\, Andrei Khrzhanovsky\, and Yuri Norstein made works ostensibly for children but which explored surreal realms of fiction and magical realism\, offering an escape from the isolated Soviet reality and a means of connecting with the wider world. By the late 80s\, these unconventional animations were influencing a generation caught between a bleak Soviet socialist reality and impending capitalism. \nTo 14 July.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE In Real Time
DESCRIPTION:NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery is celebrating its ten-year anniversary with a characteristically interesting exhibition. In Real Time is a dynamic show – over the course of three months the curators will be adding artists\, and the artists and performers will add work. So far the roster includes some impressive names. Gallery (and magpie) favourites Ramin Haerizadeh\, Rokni Haerizadeh and Hesam Rahmanian are joined by Chafa Ghaddar\, Rana Begum\, Haleh Redjaian\, Moza Almatrooshi\, Gözde Ilkin and Cristiana de Marchi. \nThe prime mover is of course the Gallery’s Executive Director Maya Allison\, who has a ‘letter of intent’ that asks some pertinent questions: “What do we need from a space for art in this particular moment\, in this particular part of the world\, in the UAE\, in a university\, in an academic gallery?” Her intention is that the artists\, the visitors and the art gallery team essentially devise some answers\, or at least some opinions – “I hope this exhibition allows for any number of responses” concludes Maya Allison. \nThe contribution from the artists is obvious – they can make and remake art\, amending their presence over the course of the show. Some artworks start with no more than a statement of intent; some artists may just leave hints of a presence (“the artist was here\, and may be back”). Maybe there will be some works that last only one day. And the roster may expand during the show: “the artist list will grow\, if and when it seems right”. \nMuch the same applies to the gallery team\, particularly the curators: they can add more artists\, reconfigure the space\, expound and cajole. The principal curator is Duygu Demir\, quite recently arrived but carrying an impressive pedigree (and ad addressbook that has obviously contributed some of the participating artists). She’s expects to provide curatorial interventions\, maybe even collaborations. \nAs for the visitors\, their role may be more ephemeral: “this is an exhibition about visiting and revisiting\, about being physically present in the space\, with the traces left by artists who have been there\, or hints of those who will be there …” But in fact two of the works will be made entirely by the community\, and that could mean a contribution from you. \n  \n

SUMMARY:All That Perishes at the Edge of Land: dir Hira Nabi (2019)
DESCRIPTION:Before the Ocean Master met its demise at the Gadani shipbreaking yards in Pakistan\, filmmaker and artist Hira Nabi gave it a voice and staged conversations between the vessel and the labourers dismantling it. The stories exchanged between the workers and the ship allude to the hazards and toxicity that affect the workers and the sea. \nInspired by the 1959 book Aag Ka Darya (River of Fire) by Urdu writer and poet Qurratulain Hyder\, Nabi incorporates insights from discussions with her mother\, as well as ideas from Rob Nixon’s Slow Violence and the Environmentalism of the Poor and poems by the left-wing Pakistani author Faiz Ahmed Faiz. \nThe screening runs for 30 minutes and will be followed by a Q&A session conducted in Urdu\, Hindi\, and English.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Reverberations: Textile as Echo
DESCRIPTION:The second of three exhibitions showcasing contemporary approaches to textile and fibre art curated for Green Art Gallery by Murtaza Vali. It brings together work by four contemporary artists – M’barek Bouhchichi\, Sayan Chanda\, Himali Singh Soin\, and Swapnaa Tamhane – that references the rich and diverse history and practice of textile arts across South and West Asia and North Africa. \nOften made in collaboration with master artisans\, the included artworks use a variety of traditional dyeing and weaving techniques and materials: wool cloth made in southeastern Morocco and then stained with henna; a handwoven tapestry and a patchwork abstraction that incorporate deconstructed vintage quilts and scarves from Bengal; Ikat fabric dyed and woven in Andhra Pradesh; and industrially made cotton embellished by hand with wood block printing and mirror embroidery in the desert region of Kutch\, Gujarat. “Countering colonial and modernist discourses that devalued such Indigenous textile traditions as mere craft\, these works reclaim their vitality as a mode of contemporary expression. Complicating modernist notions of autonomy and authorship through collaboration\, they blur commonly held distinctions between object and process\, form and ornament\, past and future\, and the handmade and the digital. And much like the traditional techniques and processes they invoke\, these artworks remind us that textile is always a multisensory medium\, resonating across visual\, sonic\, and bodily registers …”

SUMMARY:backbone
DESCRIPTION:studio salasil has curated this group show of six artists “who engage in risk and interruption within their practices”\, structuring the exhibition around the effective concept of the backbone – “a central\, internal structure of strength that binds and connects things together\, embodying our internal worlds and expanded senses of function and feeling. The metaphorical meaning is similar to the figurative translation of the word\, سند in Arabic\, which refers to someone who has your back. Through the interrogation of the word\, backbone explores the complexities and fragilities of these structures which at times can be exposed\, excavated or elusive …” \nThe artists: \nNour Malas\nMalik Thomas Jalil Kydd\nKaïs Dhifi\nAlia Hamaoui\nJana Ghalayini\nAudrey Large & Théophil Blande \nThis should be an interesting show\, if studio salasil’s ambitions and past work are any guide. Describing itself as “a future-focusing curatorial studio tending to care\, research and experimentation”\, salasil also did the rather good Crystal Clear show at Bayt Al Mamzar last year. \nTo 7 September. \nAbove: Alia Hamaoui\, Panoptic Gardens (2023). SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Suanjaya Kencut: Re-Charge
DESCRIPTION:Kencut’s first solo show in the Middle East explores personal challenge and transformation\, described by the gallery as “a pivotal moment in Kencut’s artistic journey— a deliberate pivot from external inspirations to an introspective examination of the struggles that define the human condition”. In his works\, Kencut visualises the often suffocating pressure of personal and societal expectations that can lead to burnout; the viewer is invited to navigate the tumultuous journey from overwhelming distress to the serene shores of recovery and self-acceptance.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Echoes of Infinite: Poetry’s Visual Symphony
DESCRIPTION:The Farjam Foundation isn’t a particularly activity gallery\, but it does have access to an excellent private collection that spans early Islam to present-day artistic practice across regional geographies and beyond. So when it puts on a show of selected artworks from The Farjam Collection\, it’s worth paying attention. \nThis one offers a contemporary take on classical themes in four paintings by Iranian artist Arash Nazari\, juxtaposed with ten miniature folios of Shahnameh (aka ‘The Book of Kings’\, Ferdowsi’s epic poem of 940-1020 CE) from the 15th to 17th century. \nThe exhibition seeks to magnify the glories of the detailed\, early illustrations portraying mythical stories of heroic tales\, with their rich tapestry of symbols and legendary characters that reflect ancient beliefs and traditions. Nazari himself is a self-taught Iranian artist who is fascinated by the paintings of the Shahnameh. His practice explores the original techniques of Persian Negaargari — a classical style of miniature painting or illustration that often features elaborate scenes in exquisite detail\, reflecting themes of literature\, mythology\, and royalty\, using fine brushwork and intricate color palettes.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Khaled Akil: The Infinite & The Finite
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the artist’s recent work − which aims to depict “the unseen\, the felt\, and the omnipresent”. Akil creates his compositions through dozens of thin layers\, creating depth while avoiding impasto; “the drying process [of oil paint] presents and provokes questions and answers in the artist’s mind\, creating multiple effects to choose from. Akil’s work brings time and space together through medium and concept\, putting all his tools together to tackle the immensity of the universe …”

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Raed Yassin: Allegorical Ruins
DESCRIPTION:Yassin explores the implications of Roland Barthes’ concept of “the return of the dead” in photography\, playing on the tension between memory and ghostliness by utilising old black and white photographs to evoke loss and the fleeting nature of memory. Yassin’s work also encompasses themes of urban decay and political upheaval\, with a particular focus on Beirut; but despite the mantle of loss and ruin\, Yassin infuses his art with moments of hope\, prompting viewers to reflect on memory’s complexities and consider the possibility of renewal amidst the remnants of the past.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Ala Ebtekar: The Sky of the Seven Valleys
DESCRIPTION:Ebtekar’s exhibition\, is presented as “one work in seven chapters”\, each composed of one to four doorway-sized panels that combine multi-wavelength photographic processes with the artist’s distinctive cloud-making brushstrokes. Inspired by Farid ud-Din Attar’s Sufi poem Conference of the Birds\, Ebtekar’s series follows the journeys of 30 birds through seven valleys of enlightenment: Quest\, Love\, Knowledge\, Detachment\, Unity\, Wonderment\, Poverty\, and Annihilation. Says the gallery: “As spectators confront these larger-than-life prints\, they find themselves immersed in a landscape where the atmosphere itself becomes the canvas of the cosmos\, blurring the boundaries between observer and the observed”.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Khalid Jauffer: Looking\, dwelling\, leaving
DESCRIPTION:Jauffer is an artist who deals in the metaphoric potential of everyday objects\, find the ironies in his everyday surroundings ad teasing out the spatial\, poetic relationships between his subjects and their frangible correlation to human beings. “Discarded objects and broken things are legible to a bypasser primarily as ends\, trash\, the leftovers of a story that’s done being told; it is through a process of care and attention that Khalid transforms found ends into beginnings\, unravelling tightly wound threads of human fragility encased in unremarkable shells … The simple act of looking is a necessary precursor to finding\, it is crucially differentiated from ‘seeking’ in that it is open-ended: it doesn’t prescribe its outcome …”

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Susan Kosti: What Lies Beneath
DESCRIPTION:The Sydney-based media artist and motion graphic designer has assembled a cutting-edge immersive 3D-projection show that translates ocean data collected by NASA into what the organisers describe as “a stunning kaleidoscope of vibrant corals and sea creatures … What Lies Beneath uses a unique visual language and goes far beyond the analytical origins of data visualisation by becoming a work of art”. This a new version of a project that was commissioned by NSW Destination and presented at Vivid Sydney last year.

SUMMARY:Artist’s Rooms: Amba Sayal-Bennett
DESCRIPTION:Works spanning the last eight years of the artist’s practice that critically engage with the socio-political contexts of architectural heritage and modernist ideologies and aesthetics. Drawing is at the centre of Amba Sayal-Bennett’s practice\, expanding across works on paper\, projections and sculptural installations; she is particularly interested in the nature of abstraction\, using technology in the form of language\, tools\, methods and materiality to stage relations and engagement between human and non-human. \nWithin her work\, Sayal-Bennett critiques the tendency of colonial practices to decontextualise and appropriate. She traces the migration of architectural forms across continents\, such as to Chandigarh in Punjab\, the birthplace of her maternal grandparents\, and where Le Corbusier’s purpose-built city examines the failings of modernism in post-colonial contexts. She explores modernism’s rejection of ornamentalism as well as her interest in sci-fi aesthetics\, a genre which has long been criticised for its colonial overtones. \nJameel’s Artists Rooms series gives a single gallery over to a solo exhibition by influential\, innovative artists\, with a particular focus on practitioner from the Middle East\, Asia and Africa. These capsule shows are collaborative and curated in dialogue with the artist. \nTo 24 November.

SUMMARY:Artist’s Rooms: Augustine Paredes
DESCRIPTION:Augustine Paredes’ artist’s room brings together his own personal histories and stories that explore his relationship to identity and family via his personal journey as a migrant\, navigating constantly between time\, places and identities. Gradually moving away from the camera as a main source of image-making\, he has embraced a more process-based approach that focuses on the inherent qualities and agency of materials used within his work. \nThe exhibition’s central work is Mother – a portrait of Marife\, an all-important figure in his life and one that embodies his connection to home and sense of belonging. Other works present traces of burns\, verses of poems\, paintings\, ink stains\, fibres\, pearls and wool threads. Together\, these works explore the artist’s reflections on guilt\, desire and devotion. \nJameel’s Artists Rooms series gives a single gallery over to a solo exhibition by influential\, innovative artists\, with a particular focus on practitioner from the Middle East\, Asia and Africa.
