SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Hana El-Sagini: Counting Fingers
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition that presents a newly commissioned large-scale installation rooted in the instability and fragility of the human experience — more than 200 fantastical ceramic objects arranged as surreal sculptures and structures that replicate and reimagine healthcare spaces\, such as medical waiting rooms\, hospital corridors\, and doctors’ offices. \nProduced after Hana El-Sagini’s long battle with illness\, the objects featured in this exhibition encourage viewers to find joy and humour in envisioning a strange world where humans\, animals\, plants and inanimate objects blend into semi-distinguishable forms and figures. The exhibition prompts us to pause and contemplate the inherent mechanisms that enable us to endure pain\, trauma\, fear\, and adversity in ways that may potentially reconnect us with our vulnerability and\, ultimately\, our humanity. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Timur D’Vatz: Arcadian Dreams
DESCRIPTION:A summer-long exhibition of work from one of the gallery’s stalwarts\, Timur D’Vatz\, featuring his signature mix of stylised figures and symbolic settings that owe something to mediaeval European tapestry\, something to Byzantine decoration. The title refers to the dawn of an early mythology\, located in a primeval forest\, manifested through magical flora and fantastic beasts; “there are starry skies and gleaming comets guiding both travellers and wild animals to the source of life\, which appears in the form of a Fountain or a Magical Flower. This is the focal point from where life and knowledge originate …” To 10 September.

SUMMARY:Mr Brainwash
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the French-born LA-based street artist who started filming graffiti art and subsequently became an artist in his own right after an off-hand suggestion from Banksy. As it happens\, many of the 10 works on show here are reworkings of Banksy originals (there is a persistant rumour that Mr Brainwash was/is Banksy’s alter ego\, or possible vice versa: but Mr Brainwash’s artistic evolution was mapped in Banksy’s 2010 documentary Exit Through The Gift Shop\, and Banksy has confirmed that Mr Brainwash is indeed real and a friend). Mr Brainswash has also deployed other iconic images in his paintings\, notably from Warhol and Haring. The resulting blend of Pop Art and Street Art he describes as his own form of “graffiti hybrid”. DESCRIPTION:The New-York based artist gets her first show in the UAE\, featuring works she created in Dubai during her time at the NIKA Project Space Research and Residency programme – monumental watercolour triptychs that relate to the narratives and histories of women immigrants. Muromtseva is known for her socially engaged practice and large-scale paintings\, videos\, and installations that refer to personal and collective memory; these works are based on interactions the artist had with immigrants\, both in the USA and during a month-long visit to the UAE as part of the residency. The resulting watercolours aim to capture the resilience of these women and delve into themes of home\, borders\, refugees\, and human destinies.

SUMMARY:Drawing Time: Duets
DESCRIPTION:New and historical works by 15 intergenerational artists in the Sharjah Art Foundation Collection that explore drawing as a practice. The exhibition grew out of a two-year research project into conserving paper; it seeks to re-examine the very nature of drawing as a culturally situated disciplinary practice – one that begins in the mind and extends into myriad material forms. It also delves into the concept of the double\, the pair\, the rejoinder: “acts of repetition accumulate through a curated scenography\, in which artistic duets – duos who dance and sing together\, who\, through the right dissonance or imperfect resonance\, find themselves in a state of harmony – guiding visitors across a century in time”. \nThe artists included in the exhibition are Baya\, Mounir Canaan\, Kimathi Donkor\, Ibrahim El-Salahi\, Theaster Gates\, Kamala Ibrahim Ishag\, Claudette Johnson\, Amal Kenawy\, Helen Khal\, Omer Khairy\, David Koloane\, Farideh Lashai\, Ibrahim Massouda\, Eduard Puterbrot and Hassan Sharif. \nTo 4 August. \nAbove: Omer Khairy\, Untitled (1983)

SUMMARY:Miramar Al Nayyar: Moving Through the Ether
DESCRIPTION:A collection of abstract figurative works on canvas\, “inviting viewers into a realm of recognition and constant metamorphosis … Each 190 x 120cm canvas serves as a conduit for Miramar’s endeavour to encapsulate the essence of the natural formations of the desert. Eschewing representation\, Miramar aims to distil the essence of these natural phenomena that also lie within natural movement; her bodily movement\, onto her canvases —the intricate textures\, lifeforms\, and undulating terrain—evoking a sense of abstracted organic forms.” To 30 May.

SUMMARY:Ala Ebtekar: The Sky of the Seven Valleys
DESCRIPTION:Ebtekar’s exhibition is presented as “one work in seven chapters”\, each composed of one to four doorway-sized panels that combine multi-wavelength photographic processes with the artist’s distinctive cloud-making brushstrokes. Inspired by Farid ud-Din Attar’s Sufi poem Conference of the Birds\, Ebtekar’s series follows the journeys of 30 birds through seven valleys of enlightenment: Quest\, Love\, Knowledge\, Detachment\, Unity\, Wonderment\, Poverty\, and Annihilation. Says the gallery: “As spectators confront these larger-than-life prints\, they find themselves immersed in a landscape where the atmosphere itself becomes the canvas of the cosmos\, blurring the boundaries between observer and the observed”. \nTo 28 June.

SUMMARY:Khalid Jauffer: Looking\, dwelling\, leaving
DESCRIPTION:Jauffer is an artist who deals in the metaphoric potential of everyday objects\, find the ironies in his everyday surroundings ad teasing out the spatial\, poetic relationships between his subjects and their frangible correlation to human beings. “Discarded objects and broken things are legible to a bypasser primarily as ends\, trash\, the leftovers of a story that’s done being told; it is through a process of care and attention that Khalid transforms found ends into beginnings\, unravelling tightly wound threads of human fragility encased in unremarkable shells … The simple act of looking is a necessary precursor to finding\, it is crucially differentiated from ‘seeking’ in that it is open-ended: it doesn’t prescribe its outcome …” \nTo 28 June.

SUMMARY:Dima Srouji: Charts for a Resurrection
DESCRIPTION:The first-ever solo exhibition for artist\, architect and researcher Dima Srouji\, whose work acts as a form of political commentary and as a place-making (or un-making) tool – “Interested in the ground\, objects\, displacement\, restitution\, forgeries\, and living archives\, the artist looks for potential ruptures in the ground where imaginary liberation is possible.” Srouji collaborates closely with archaeologists\, anthropologists\, glass blowers and sound designers to develop her architectural projects\, installations\, product designs\, and writing. Working across a diverse range of media including glass\, text\, archival materials\, maps\, and film\, Srouji questions ideas of identity and globalisation through historic strata and space\, in connection to the spirit of a place and displacement. \nThe exhibition is conceived as two distinct spaces\, the larger terrain and the more intimate chapel\, comprising installations and archival prints that intertwine historical artefacts with imaginary archaeological sites. To 25 May.

SUMMARY:Reverberations: Textile as Echo
DESCRIPTION:The second of three exhibitions showcasing contemporary approaches to textile and fibre art curated for Green Art Gallery by Murtaza Vali. It brings together work by four contemporary artists – M’barek Bouhchichi\, Sayan Chanda\, Himali Singh Soin\, and Swapnaa Tamhane – that references the rich and diverse history and practice of textile arts across South and West Asia and North Africa. \nOften made in collaboration with master artisans\, the included artworks use a variety of traditional dyeing and weaving techniques and materials: wool cloth made in southeastern Morocco and then stained with henna; a handwoven tapestry and a patchwork abstraction that incorporate deconstructed vintage quilts and scarves from Bengal; Ikat fabric dyed and woven in Andhra Pradesh; and industrially made cotton embellished by hand with wood block printing and mirror embroidery in the desert region of Kutch\, Gujarat. “Countering colonial and modernist discourses that devalued such Indigenous textile traditions as mere craft\, these works reclaim their vitality as a mode of contemporary expression. Complicating modernist notions of autonomy and authorship through collaboration\, they blur commonly held distinctions between object and process\, form and ornament\, past and future\, and the handmade and the digital. And much like the traditional techniques and processes they invoke\, these artworks remind us that textile is always a multisensory medium\, resonating across visual\, sonic\, and bodily registers …” \nTo 12 June.

SUMMARY:Raed Yassin: Allegorical Ruins
DESCRIPTION:Yassin explores the implications of Roland Barthes’ concept of “the return of the dead” in photography\, playing on the tension between memory and ghostliness by utilising old black and white photographs to evoke loss and the fleeting nature of memory. Yassin’s work also encompasses themes of urban decay and political upheaval\, with a particular focus on Beirut; but despite the mantle of loss and ruin\, Yassin infuses his art with moments of hope\, prompting viewers to reflect on memory’s complexities and consider the possibility of renewal amidst the remnants of the past. SUMMARY:Meet the artist: Dima Srouji
DESCRIPTION:Dima Srouji\, whose Charts for a Resurrection show opens here the day before\, is in conversation with Myrna Ayad. This should be a productive chat; Srouji is a particularly interesting artist – a graduate of the Yale School of Architecture and currently Studio Lead for the RCA’s City Design MA programme\, her work acts as a form of political commentary and as a place-making (or un-making) tool – and Ayad is adept at managing these interview-like conversations. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Salomé Chatriot: If That Glass Breaks Humanity is Doomed
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition show for a magpie favourite. Salomé Chatriot’s work merges technology with organic elements to suggest a harmony between human and machine\, advocating for a future where technology and humanity coexist. There’s no pessimism about technological progress\, just an exploration of opportunities to expand our relationships with it. And alongside that her 3D works consider issues of identity\, gender and sexuality with a distinctly erotic component …

SUMMARY:Mona Ayyash: The Clock Doesn’t Care
DESCRIPTION:For her first solo exhibition\, the culmination of the artist’s participation in the 2024 cycle of the 421 Artistic Development Program\, Ayyash presents a collaborative video piece focusing on small body movements. Created with a group of actors\, dancers\, and performance artists selected through an open call\, the piece is a study of repetitive non-functional movements\, without purpose or productivity\, that questions the tension between passing time and wasting time. \nThe collaborators filmed themselves responding to movement prompts\, encouraging them to consider what ‘doing nothing’ looks like; Ayyash extracts fragments of the collected footage and edits them to be layered one over the other or side-by-side\, constantly changing\, accumulating\, and subtracting. The everyday and the mundane are themes highlighted in work\, as the bodies are stuck repeating their movements in a loop\, going nowhere. Without a clear narrative to hold the spectator’s attention\, the exhibition serves as a playful inquiry into the objective nature of time. \nThis project grew from the artist’s earlier participation in the Homebound Residency Program in 2020\, where she produced a video work titled Folding Bellies in collaboration with five participants from the UAE art community. \nTo 25 August.
