SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Habeeb Abu-Futtaim: The Ongoing Performance of Melancholia and Songs in Solitude
DESCRIPTION:Two interconnected exhibitions\, both curated by Mo Reda and supported by the Department of Painting and Printmaking at VCUarts Qatar. Together\, The Ongoing Performance of Melancholia and Songs in Solitude mark the culmination of a two-month residency at Bayt AlMamzar; they present several different bodies of work developed over the past ten years\, drawing from an artistic practice shaped by sustained research\, investigation\, and critical inquiry. \nWorking across painting\, installation\, performance\, video\, and writing\, Abu-Futtaim investigates the construction and performance of collective identities\, examining how inherited symbols\, political imaginaries\, and cultural narratives become internalized as expressions of belonging. Songs in Solitude reflects on the intimate space of artistic practice through playfulness\, imagination\, intimacy\, and selfhood; The Ongoing Performance of Melancholia turns outward to examine the inherited performances of collective identity and the burden of unrealized political futures. Between them the exhibitions move between the personal and the political\, revealing how solitude\, memory\, and collective imagination continually shape one another.

SUMMARY:A Way Through: Archive of Resilience
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition born out of the question: how will this time be remembered and who will tell the stories of the people who live here? It’s one of the outcomes of Kutubna’s initiative Documenting Culture in the Gulf in a Time of War\, an oral history project centring the experiences of diverse people living in the Khaleej. More than 40 artists and other contributors from different generations and cultural backgrounds are showing 70 works\, including journals\, poems\, short stories and publications\, embroidery\, crochet\, collage\, paintings\, digital works and photographs; their contributions speak of resilience\, protection\, unity\, faith\, gratitude\, and hope\, while also reflecting moments of fear and uncertainty and a deeper connection to home. \nTo 7 December.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Global Positioning System
DESCRIPTION:An ambitious large-scale group exhibition dedicated to mapping and navigation systems\, “telling stories of fast cars and donkeys\, spinning globes and street barricades\, cosmic highways and broken bridges … [it] delves into topographies\, transit lines and simulated landscapes to engage critically with the infrastructure of movement and navigation”. Set against real and imagined geographies and landscapes\, the exhibition asks questions about the infrastructures that enable transport and trade\, the promises of speed and progress\, the meaning of home\, and what ‘navigation’ means when the destination is not a place but a memory … It is curated by Indranjan Banerjee and Lucas Morin (both exhibition curators at the Jameel) and features 30 artists. A second ‘chapter’ of the exhibition runs at Hayy Jameel in Jeddah to 26 October featuring 22 artists – a third of whom are from the Dubai roster\, with new names making up the balance.

SUMMARY:Juma Alhaj: Revelation
DESCRIPTION:The first institutional solo exhibition by Emirati artist Juma Alhaj is the culmination of his participation in 421 Arts Campus’ Artistic Development Program. Grounded in reading\, journaling\, and philosophical inquiry\, it explores themes of reflection\, solitude\, and self-discovery; the exhibition marks “a significant and ambitious evolution in his practice” according to the gallery\, expanding beyond painting into installation for the first time. \nVisitors experience it barefoot (the space is carpeted); throughout the exhibition\, Alhaj’s abstract inscriptions\, encompassing both writing and image\, extend across glass\, fabric\, light\, and architecture – “shifting with the environment and the movement of visitors through the exhibition”. \nTo 10 January. \n

SUMMARY:Artist Talks: Moza Al Mazrouei – For Purposes Other than Intended
DESCRIPTION:A conversation moderated by Sarah Almehairi exploring Moza Al Mazrouei’s artistic practice across sculpture\, film\, mixed media\, writing\, and curation. Moving between research and fiction\, observation and participation\, the discussion touches on authorship\, selfhood\, and the structures of power that shape how we see and understand the world. \nThis part of the NYUAD Art Gallery’s Artist Talks\, an artist-to-artist conversation series founded and curated by Sarah Almehairi. The series brings together creatives based in or affiliated with the UAE to discuss their practices\, forming part of Almehairi’s broader effort to expand cultural discourse and further connect the local art community. \nRight: Moza Al Mazrouei\, Bring Back the Queen (2024: film still)

SUMMARY:Fellow Travellers
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition conceived and curated by Prof Omar Kholeif\, featuring Sonia Balassanian\, Jai Chuhan\, Luísa Correia Pereira\, Lalitha Lajmi\, Irene Scheinmann and Omar Kholeif himself. \nDeveloped from nearly two decades of Kholeif’s research\, writing and relationships with artists\, the exhibition is an ambitious-sounding attempt to “re-dream the routes\, flows and counter-flows of modernity through the present”. As Kholief puts it: “Here\, the diasporic imagination is reclaimed\, illuminating the possibilities of shared movement—literal and metaphorical\, exploring how it affects artistic method. Fellow Travellers is a parcel\, a constitutive act of worlding\, of dreaming …” \nFellow Travellers brings landmark and rarely seen works from five artists into dialogue with Kholeif’s own paintings; painting is seen as a connective thread through which diasporic histories\, oral traditions\, symbolic languages and forms of ancestral knowledge can be recovered and reimagined. \nThe exhibition is accompanied by a limited-edition publication featuring original poetry and a curatorial essay. \nTo 30 November.

SUMMARY:Talal Moualla: The Table of Absence
DESCRIPTION:For more than five decades\, the Syrian artist\, poet\, and critic Talal Moualla has approached the image not simply as representation\, but (says the gallery) “as a form of thought … Moving between painting\, criticism\, poetry and research\, his practice asks how the visible can carry an idea\, shape consciousness\, and open new ways of understanding human existence. The Table of Absence brings this lifelong enquiry to one of its most distilled forms”. \nIn Moualla’s work\, the table is a symbolic structure\, a place where human beings recognise one another’s presence – “around it coexist memory and mourning\, intimacy and estrangement\, love and betrayal\, birth and death … Yet as the enquiry deepens\, even the table begins to disappear. It is reduced to a circle\, a plate\, a geometric sign\, a pale field\, until it approaches emptiness itself”. So “the image no longer delivers an answer; it becomes a way of thinking through the question”. \nTo 29 October.

SUMMARY:From Istanbul to Cairo – A Thousand Ways of Being Modern: dir Ilana Navaro (2025)
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the NYUAD Art Gallery’s current exhibition All Manner of Experiments\, the Gallery has organised a special screening of Ilana Navaro’s well-regarded documentary exploring how late 19th- and 20th-century artists from the region developed alternative modernities. The film features contributions from key art historians – among them Nada Shabout\, curator of the exhibition\, who will be talking with Masha Kirasirova after the screening. Kirasirova is a Faculty Fellow at NYUAD\, a historian whose work approaches modern Middle Eastern history from a ‘Second World’ perspective. \nImage: Inji Efflatoun\, Dreams of the Detainee (1961)

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Hamad Almuzaini: Precarious Beings
DESCRIPTION:“What is the ultimate goal of a city?” asks architect/artist Hamad Almuzaini: “Governance and the streamlining of lived experience – an impossible task – or something more open\, broken\, and constantly reinvented?” The exhibition looks at placemaking within the context of Kuwait City\, considering everyday details\, overlooked objects\, and urban infrastructures that shape places to trace the subtle relationships between people\, objects\, systems\, and the built environment.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Golden Harvest\, Lasting Bloom
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition dedicated to the natural maturity\, abundance\, and fullness of autumn\, including works by Rimma Gagloeva\, Javlon Umarbekov\, Timur Akhmedov\, and Vera Nechaeva. Because each artist approaches the theme of autumn in their own way\, discovering a personal language through colour\, light\, form\, and painterly expression\, the exhibition is not simply a literal depiction of autumn – more an exploration of how the same natural motif can acquire entirely different artistic meanings.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Sara Masinaei: Boundaries and Breaches
DESCRIPTION:Sara Masinaei’s solo show explores how urban spaces shape memory\, movement and lived experience: “through walking\, collecting found objects and recording traces of overlooked surfaces\, she treats the city’s ground as an active part of how we experience and navigate our surroundings”\, says the gallery. Her works include monoprints created by pressing canvas directly on to urban surfaces\, plus sculptural pieces that explore the tension between order and disruption. \nThis work results from Dom Arts’ Studio Support Programme\, introduced to gave artists space and time to develop their practices without requiring them to produce new work or meet predetermined outcomes.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Fabian Philandrianos and Pascal Navarro: Beyond the Gaze
DESCRIPTION:“An exhibition exploring the perception and relationship between the viewer and the artwork … an invitation to discover what may appear when we take the time to look beyond the surface.” The two French artists offer a dialogue between the figurative and the abstract\, the intimate and the universal\, movement and stillness: “from the intensity of a human gaze to the vastness of an imagined landscape\, the works encourage us to slow down\, look again and allow perception to shift”.

SUMMARY:Spices and Wonders: Sailing the Indian Ocean
DESCRIPTION:This spectacular exhibition follows a thousand years of maritime history and culture\, charting the routes that connected the civilisations of Africa\, Asia\, and beyond. It documents the evolution of navigation and the techniques that enabled adventurous sailors to explore the unknown; spices were the prize\, and as people travelled\, so did ideas and cultures. Spanning from Antiquity to the 17th century\, the exhibition explores centuries of trade\, movement and cultural exchange through displays of spices\, textiles\, ceramics and other special cargos which crossed the ocean. \nThe exhibition is presented in partnership with the National Museum of Asian Arts – Guimet in France; it is curated by Louvre Abu Dhabi’s Guilhem André and Claire Déléry\, Curator of the Chinese Ceramics collection at Guimet in Paris. A second edition of this touring exhibition will be presented at Guimet next year. \nTo 14 February.

SUMMARY:Consolidation is Reconsolidation
DESCRIPTION:Abu Dhabi is getting a new “curatorial platform dedicated to showcasing emerging artistic practices and cultivating new collector communities”\, which in practice means opportunities for both early-stage artists to show work and “a new generation of collectors” to buy it. Hyphen Contemporary’s founder Cecelia Jihu-Sara says she “wanted to bring fresh energy to both sides of the art world”: Hyphen’s first show\, a brief popup\, is at Region in MiZa with five UAE-based artists\, none older than 31 – Rayan Aljneibi\, Layla Doueidi\, Sara Kamar\, Martin Ong Yambao\, and Husna Samer.

SUMMARY:100 Years of Paul Guiragossian
DESCRIPTION:A landmark retrospective for one of the key modernist painters to emerge from the Levant in the twentieth century. Alongside significant works drawn primarily from the artist’s estate\, many travelling outside Lebanon for the very first time\, the exhibition – the first significant retrospective for Guiragossian since 2013 – includes archival photographs\, personal documents\, and other rarely seen materials that provide an intimate portrait of the artist. \nStructured as a chronological journey\, the exhibition traces Guiragossian’s artistic evolution from his early years in an Armenian family shaped by displacement and migration\, including the 1948 relocation from Jaffa to Lebanon\, through to global recognition. The exhibition also highlights the central role of three women in his life: his mother Rahel\, his wife Juliette\, and his daughter Manuella. \nThe exhibition has been developed in collaboration with the Paul Guiragossian Foundation and co-curated by Manuella Guiragossian with BFAF head curator and director of exhibitions Dr Michaela Watrelot. It’s the keystone of From a Shared Ground\, an homage to Lebanon through three concurrent exhibitions that explore how artists across generations have drawn upon experiences of homeland\, displacement\, memory and belonging. \nTo 17 January. \nRight: Paul Guiragossian\, Self-portrait (1948) \n

SUMMARY:Roots Before Petals
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition that brings contemporary UAE-based artist Lana Khayat into dialogue with Lebanese modernists Etel Adnan and Helen Khal\, linking distinct practices across generations of Lebanese artists. Says the gallery: “Their work differs in scale and sensibility\, yet each built an abstract visual language from the natural motif and shared engagement with the memory of homeland”. \nThis is one of three concurrent BFAF exhibitions under the title From a Shared Ground\, an homage to Lebanon that explores how artists across generations have drawn upon experiences of homeland\, displacement\, memory and belonging. \nTo 17 January. \nRight: Lana Khayat\, Fifth from Left \n

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Private World
DESCRIPTION:A group show for Lulua Alyahya\, Rami Farook\, Sohrab Hura\, and Khaled Jarada that promises to take the viewer into “intimate\, elusive worlds … Modest in scale\, [the works] invite a form of looking that is closer and more inward\, creating encounters that feel private rather than public”. The gallery goes on: “Many of the works evoke states of solitude\, seclusion and inward attention. They seem to exist apart from the demands of the outside world\, creating spaces for reflection\, imagination and feeling. Across the exhibition\, intimacy takes different forms: through personal observation\, fragments and fleeting moments\, relationships and lived experience\, or through atmospheric and psychologically charged spaces …”

DESCRIPTION:Christie’s first live auction of fine art in Abu Dhabi takes place on 1 November\, preceded by two viewing days open to all. There will be more than 70 works from six decades of museum-quality art that traces the evolution of artistic practices across the Middle East and North Africa. \nHighlights include … \nPaul Guiragossian\, Noces (1958-59) A vibrant wedding scene that reflects Guiragossian’s enduring themes of home\, community and human connection; the work was exhibited at his first major exhibition in Lebanon in 1959. Estimate: $300\,000-500\,000 \nSamia Halaby\, Yesterday (1978) An important work from Samia Halaby’s 1970s\, when the Palestinian-American artist forged her distinctive language of geometric abstraction. Estimate: $200\,000-300\,000 \nMohamed Melehi\, A30 (1962: right) From Mohamed Melehi’s seminal 1960–62 series of ‘black works’\, reflecting his experimentation with the bianco e nero technique and his engagement with Zen and Sufi. Estimate:$100\,000-150\,000 \nNadia Saikali\, Mandala Bleu Nuit (1982) From an important mature phase of Saikali’s work\, characterised by its meditative and spiritual abstraction. Four other works from the Barjeel Art Foundation are also offered in the sale.  Estimate: $30\,000-50\,000 \nMarwan Kassab-Bachi\, Kopf (Head) (1987) A pivotal moment in the evolution of Marwan’s portraiture\, moving from the horizontally stretched facial landscapes of the 1970s towards the vertical\, frontal heads that became a defining motif of his mature practice. Estimate: $200\,000-300\,000 \nInji Efflatoun\, Untitled (1987) One of Inji Efflatoun’s last works\, representing the culmination of the Egyptian modernist’s practice\, characterised by a lyrical synthesis of nature and the built environment through expressive colour and line. One of eight works from the Dalloul Collection offered in the auction. Estimate: $40\,000-60\,000 \nThe auction will be accompanied by a programme of previews\, talks and educational events; details to be announced “in due course”\, but signing up for Christie’s mailers will presumably get you advance information.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Talal Moualla: The Table of Absence

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Hisham Sharif: Allusive Veil
DESCRIPTION:Sharif’s first solo exhibition in the UAE presents an autobiographical and very personal series of works about the struggles of private and artist life in a closed society – “a vulnerable\, nuanced presentation of life”. The Bahraini artist uses colour to convey privacy and intimacy\, “expressive hues that meld harsh truths with illusions of what could be … Sharif’s approach ensures that his depiction of these taboos is conveyed through humble depictions that preserve a certain Oriental sensibility\, avoiding the shock value or censorship they might otherwise provoke. The scenes are all about ambiance\, a haze of what was\, what is\, and what could be”.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Amna AlMemari\, Lubnah Ansari\, MG\, Andrew Riad: Infrared
DESCRIPTION:This group show is the culmination of the second edition of NIKA Project Space’s Open Studio programme: four artists based in the UAE were invited to develop new bodies of work in dialogue with the space\, one another\, and the public. Curated by Rahel Aima\,  the exhibition brings together projects developed during the residency themed around the observer effect – “in which a wave becomes a particle and the body becomes a tongue through ritual\, accumulation\, and the heat of the eye … Rather than producing works in response to a prescribed theme\, the participating artists continued investigations proposed during the Open Studio application process. Over the course of the residency\, these projects evolved through experimentation\, research\, conversation\, and material exploration\, offering a glimpse into artistic practice as an unfolding process”.
