SUMMARY:The Glitch: Fragmented Becoming
DESCRIPTION:A Diarbid show for 35 artists “who explore identity as fluid\, layered\, and continuously evolving. Through fragmented\, distorted\, duplicated\, and incomplete forms\, the works examine how the self is shaped by memory\, displacement\, shifting environments\, and the uncertainties of contemporary life. The glitch functions as both a visual language and a metaphor for these shifting states …  By interrupting familiar forms and unsettling recognition\, it opens alternative ways of seeing and becoming. Fragmentation is approached not as loss\, but as a generative space where the familiar can be disrupted and the incomplete can remain open to new possibilities …” \nTo 15 September.

SUMMARY:Hamad Almuzaini: Precarious Beings
DESCRIPTION:“What is the ultimate goal of a city?” asks architect/artist Hamad Almuzaini: “Governance and the streamlining of lived experience – an impossible task – or something more open\, broken\, and constantly reinvented?” He says these questions guide his work across photography\, drawing\, and sculpture as he probes the entangled systems and countless stakeholders that make and remake environments we call ‘home’. “My practice involves observing and researching built environments and the ways we generate and respond to the notion of ‘place’ … By examining widely encountered subjects within cities\, I reinterpret how we navigate and interact with these places – uncovering gestures\, behaviours\, and motivations that quietly shape the act of placemaking.” \nThe exhibition looks at placemaking within the context of Kuwait City\, considering everyday details\, overlooked objects\, and urban infrastructures that shape places to trace the subtle relationships between people\, objects\, systems\, and the built environment. \nTo 11 October.

SUMMARY:All Manner of Experiments: Legacies of the Baghdad Modern Art Group
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Nada Shabout of NYUAD’s al Mawrid Arab Center for the Study of Art\, this exhibition investigates and celebrates the work and influence of one of the most important art movement of the mid-Century Middle East. Dr Shabout brings together work by the artists from the Baghdad Modern Art Group\, as well as those who the group influenced both at the time and in later generations. \nEstablished in 1951 by two of Iraq’s most influential artists\, Jewad Selim (1919–1961) and Shakir Hassan Al Said (1925–2004)\, the Baghdad Modern Art Group grew to engage many of Iraq’s leading artists\, architects\, poets\, and more; together\, they sought to develop a new art form that reflected the secularised\, modern society emerging from the dismantling of the Ottoman Empire. Says the gallery: “Artists questioned the ability of traditional ‘Islamic art’ practices to present their contemporary realities\, searching for a more effective visual language. In this context\, modern art provided a conduit for exploration and was perceived by Iraqi artists as a global space of shared humanity …” \nAt the same time\, those artists were conscious of their role in developing a sense of identity for their newly formed nation\, alongside broader decolonisation processes. “This set the stage for Iraq’s so-called golden age of the 1950s: a time of maturation for a generation of artists pivotal in initiating rigorous standards of art theory and practice\, thus charting new possibilities for future generations.” \nArtists included in the show: Faraj Abbo\, Sadik Kwaish Alfraji\, Himat Mohammad Ali\, Rasoul Alwan\, Suad al-Attar\, Qahtan Awni\, Dia al-Azzawi\, Bogus Bablanian\, Amar Dawod\, Ghassan Ghaib\, Faiq (Faeq) Hassan\, Mohammed Ghani Hikmat\, Jabra Ibrahim Jabra\, Rand Abdul Jabbar\, Fouad Jihad\, Saadi Al Kaabi\, Ardash Kakafian\, Salma Khoury\, Hanaa Malallah\, Mahmoud Obaidi\, Widad al-Orfali\, Khalid al-Rahal\, Kareem Risan\, Miran al-Saadi\, Mahmoud Sabri\, Naziha Salim\, Nizar (Nazar) Salim\, Shakir Hassan Al Said\, Delair Shaker\, Jewad Selim\, Lorna Selim\, Walid Siti\, Ismail Fattah (Al-Turk)\, Madiha Umar\, Khalil al-Ward\, Nazar Yahya. \nTo 3 January.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY The Two Walks: Works on Paper selected by Judy Karkour
DESCRIPTION:A group show of new and archival works on paper selected by Judy Karkour that brings together 14 artists with distinct material and artistic backgrounds – Sarah Almehairi\, Faris Alshafar\, Olaf Breuning\, Bernhard Buhmann\, André Butzer\, Nadine Ghandour\, Monika Grabuschnigg\, Amir Khojasteh\, Nour Malas\, Solimar Miller\, Philip Mueller\, Mayar Obedo\, Edgar Orlaineta\, Amba Sayal-Bennett. \nThe title refers to “the corridor that souls use to travel between worlds\, to the thousand lives that live within one\, and to those who resist conformity” and the exhibition explores paper as a medium that challenges scale as grandiose; there is something uniquely revealing about working with paper\, and each of the artists uses and manipulates it in different ways that expand beyond its traditional associations – to express hidden existential thoroughfare\, complex intentions\, and explore innovative techniques.

SUMMARY:Amna AlMemari\, Lubnah Ansari\, MG\, Andrew Riad: Infrared
DESCRIPTION:This group show is the culmination of the second edition of NIKA Project Space’s Open Studio programme: four artists based in the UAE were invited to develop new bodies of work in dialogue with the space\, one another\, and the public. Curated by Rahel Aima\,  the exhibition brings together projects developed during the residency themed around the observer effect – “in which a wave becomes a particle and the body becomes a tongue through ritual\, accumulation\, and the heat of the eye … Rather than producing works in response to a prescribed theme\, the participating artists continued investigations proposed during the Open Studio application process. Over the course of the residency\, these projects evolved through experimentation\, research\, conversation\, and material exploration\, offering a glimpse into artistic practice as an unfolding process”. \nDubai-based Singaporean artist MG has new paintings from her ongoing series Collecting the Collectors\, which examines the private interiors of art collectors as psychologically charged spaces where identity and power are negotiated through objects and images. Drawing from real interiors while deliberately disrupting their spatial logic\, her paintings transform domestic settings into unstable environments in which artworks\, decorative objects\, and their owners become participants in an intricate theatre of collecting and self-construction. \nAndrew Riad expands his multidisciplinary research into dance\, ancient Egyptian mythology\, and the material history of copper through an installation combining painting\, sculpture\, text\, and ritual gesture. The project interweaves personal memory\, Coptic funerary traditions\, and the persistence of language; copper\, roses\, milk\, water\, and movement recur throughout the installation and individual objects\, connecting ideas of ancestry\, spirituality\, and cultural survival. \nLubnah Ansari continues the material investigations initiated through recent research; her practice considers the migrations and transformations of the word haq across South and Southwest Asia\, approaching language as a material capable of translation and renewal. Working with ash\, stone\, sand\, glass\, photography\, and found objects\, Ansari develops sculptural and photographic works that reflect on memory and the ways meaning persists across histories and geographies. \nAnd Emirati artist Amna AlMemari presents a new chapter in her ongoing exploration of Tarflowers\, a fictional ecosystem that draws on the landscapes and visual culture of the Gulf. Combining photography\, drawing\, and mixed media\, her works construct speculative environments where geological\, political\, and media narratives become layered into new visual ecologies. \nTo 31 October. \nRight: Amna AlMemari\, Tarflowers (fragment) (2026)

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Time That Grows Slowly
DESCRIPTION:A group exhibition based around site-specific installations and considering ecological\, feminist\, philosophical\, and postcolonial concerns. The core inspiration however is “philosophical reflections of time as growth rather than movement … Time\, as humans experience it\, is inseparable from the vegetal. The oxygen we breathe\, the food we consume\, the rhythms of agriculture and settlement — all are shaped by plant life. Yet this dependency remains largely invisible”.  The curator\, Alexander Burenkov\, suggests that the exhibition “proposes a toolkit for slowing down\, a reorientation of our sensorium to the rhythms of plants\, the creation of space for vegetal attunement\, reflection and contemplation in dynamic urban conditions\, and the raising of questions about how duration\, memory\, and lived experience are produced within such environments …” \nThe artists: \nMaha Alasaker Kuwait / UAE\nSrijon Chowdhury Bangladesh / USA\nOdonchimeg Davaadorj Mongolia / France\nPatricia Domínguez Chile\nLouis Guillaume France\nMevlana Lipp Germany\nSulafa Mohammed UAE\nTabita Rezaire France / French Guiana\nShaima Shamsi Saudi Arabia / Bahrain / UAE\nFarah Soltani Iran / UAE\nAntoine Renard France\nNadia Waheed Saudi Arabia / Pakistan / USA

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Petr Kirusha: Every moment is a fresh beginning
DESCRIPTION:A solo show featuring works that Petr Kirusha developed during his residency at Dom Art Projects. At a time of heightened geopolitical tension between the US and Iran\, Kirusha documented the landscapes of Al Quoz and the rapidly changing cityscape of Dubai – observations that evolved into paintings and works on paper. “Working with a post-digital approach to colour\, he leaves the white of the paper active — like a blank screen — and employs a technique that preserves luminosity in the lower layers of paint”. \n

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Rana Begum: Boundless Geometry
DESCRIPTION:Selected works from the Farjam Collection. Through a refined language of Minimalist abstraction\, the London-based artist blurs the boundaries between sculpture\, painting and architecture – “bringing together works that explore light\, colour\, perception\, and spatial experience\, the exhibition reflects Rana Begum’s distinctive visual language\, where geometry becomes fluid\, atmospheric\, and deeply sensory … Through shifting reflections\, layered structures\, and luminous surfaces\, Boundless Geometry invites viewers into a contemplative encounter with form\, movement\, and space”.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Ahmad AlAttar: Human in the Loop
DESCRIPTION:Human in the Loop is a sound-based interactive installation that takes the form of a game of hide-and-seek between visitors and an unseen algorithm. Hanging ropes are suspended from the ceiling and visitors are invited to pull on them; each pull interrupts the continuous ambient sounds of nature with a brief\, glitch-like sound. At first\, these responses may feel random\, but with repetition\, patterns begin to emerge; and when the correct rope is found\, the system responds with a distinct and heightened auditory moment – a brief reward that signals discovery. Almost immediately\, the algorithm relocates\, hiding once again within the field of ropes\, and the search resets. \nSo what begins as playful interaction gradually becomes an act of careful listening and navigation. Human in the Loop reflects a contemporary paradox: we take pleasure in interaction even as it draws us deeper into technological rhythms that are increasingly difficult to step away from. \nAhmad AlAttar\, currently is a Senior Robotics Engineer at Dubai Future Labs\, was a participant in the 2024 cycle of the 421 Artistic Development Program (ADP)\, facilitated by Jolaine Frizzell. During preparation for the exhibition he was also mentored by Khalid AlAwadhi\, Founder & CEO of Remal\, and Dr Pradeep Sharma\, Director of the Arts\, Culture and Heritage program at the Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation. \nTo 13 September.

SUMMARY:Stephan Kaluza: From Dust to Bloom
DESCRIPTION:Stephan Kaluza’s practice is fundamentally concerned with depictions of nature\, either as hyper-realistic oils or near-abstract renderings. These two modes of painting should be seen as different stages of the same subject in a process of transformation: disruptions creep in\, and appearances prove deceptive. Says the gallery: “At first glance\, the paintings appear to be precise\, almost preservative images of an intact world – until a second layer emerges\, sharply challenging what is being seen”. SUMMARY:Bashar Khalaf: The Field of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Two series of works\, Junk Garden and Protective Shield\, from the Ramallah-born artist. “The Field of Dreams is an exploration of formations of ‘steel’ in the public space from the perspective of the relationship between the self\, the object\, and the other” says the gallery. “It can be viewed as an interactive space with the fragile reality in which humanity lives.” \nKhalaf’s dreaming energy gives steel junk – bulldozers\, vehicles\, surveillance cameras – an chance for self-reinvention; it confronts the machine with its own existence\, giving it a tragic form and allowing it reposition itself over time. The garbage bins in Protective Shield were used during the First Intifada to block street and provide shelter from bullets ; in contrast\, the colonial system used steel barrels filled with cement to seal off the entrances to villages and camps. \nTo 8 November.

SUMMARY:Artist's Room: Lulua Alyahya
DESCRIPTION:Marking her first solo exhibition in the UAE\, Lulua Alyahya’s Artist’s Room brings together new commissions\, loans and works from the Art Jameel Collection. Through her paintings\, Alyahya explores culturally embedded archetypes with tenderness\, humour and a critical inflection\, often engaging with representations of masculinity set against the natural and built environments of the Gulf; working on an intimate scale\, her layered\, gestural brushstrokes suggest a process of continual revision that contributes to the atmosphere and surreal quality of her paintings. \nTo 31 January. \nRight: Lulua Alyahya\, Skyscrapers (2023)

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Laila Majid and Inaam Zafar: Body Quotidian
DESCRIPTION:Recent works by Laila Majid and Inaam Zafar that explore the human body and its presence in contemporary life through metaphor and symbolism. In Majid’s practice\, sculptural and photographic works unfold through slow revelation; Zafar’s practice explores themes of death and decay\, while foregrounding the body as a perishable entity. Bringing together these works\, Body Quotidian explores how light\, material\, gesture and atmosphere filters bodily experience; Moving between domestic scenes and abstraction\, the exhibition reflects on the quiet\, everyday moments through which the body continues to shape how we see and inhabit the world. \n

SUMMARY:Artist's Room: Shezad Dawood
DESCRIPTION:Dawood’s New Dream Machine Project centres on a 3m-high rotating and flickering light sculpture\, an homage to artist and writer Brion Gysin’s Dreamachine; driving the mechanism is a perforated cylinder emitting pulses of light at the frequency of the brain’s alpha waves\, said to induce altered states of consciousness. Originally commissioned for the Abraaj Group Art Prize in 2011 and first presented at Art Dubai that same year\, the work is part of the Art Jameel Collection and has rarely been exhibited since. \nHere the sculpture is presented alongside two smaller Recyclages prototypes and archival materials tracing the project’s history. \nTo 31 January.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY In Abstracto\, In Concreto: On Memory and Presence
DESCRIPTION:A summer-long group show for Luke Agada\, Tunji Adeniyi-Jones\, Ludovic Nkoth\, and Naila Opiangah\, curated by Brice Arsène Yonkeu – whose curatorial statement defines the show as “an encounter with works on paper and paintings that move between visibility and erasure\, between the surfaces of lived experience and the abstractions of memory”. It goes on: “the exhibition is less concerned with depicting bodies in their recognisable form than with asking how the body … becomes a vessel for history\, inheritance\, and imagination”; and “rather than presenting a singular mode of figuration or abstraction\, the exhibition unfolds as a spectrum of strategies. Within this spectrum\, three interwoven threads emerge: Memory and Inheritance\, where surfaces register the weight of what is passed down and endured; Myth and Imagination\, where hybrid or surreal forms generate new lineages; and Presence and Care\, where the body is both affirmed and protected as a site of tenderness and resilience.”

SUMMARY:Mohamed Monaiseer: 85 Seconds To Midnight
DESCRIPTION:Monaiseer’s solo show examines history through cycles\, repetition and flows\, while testing the unstable boundary between imagination and reality. The title references the current status of the Doomsday Clock and its measurement of humanity’s proximity to catastrophe; notions of war\, occupation and imperial power have long animated his practice\, and here he considers how they recur across contexts and generations\, altering borders\, enemies and technologies while preserving familiar structures of domination. \nThe exhibition comprises drawings\, paintings\, sculptures and textile works\, as well as a video installation. Recurring motifs in these works are absorbed from literary fiction\, popular storytelling and contemporary media. And dark humour runs through them; for Monaiseer it is a means of examining the performance of power and the fantasies through which conflict can be romanticised\, rehearsed and projected. \nElsewhere\, pixelated figures and fragmented grids evoke the digital mediation of contemporary warfare and our era of misinformation\, in which information is increasingly manipulated and corrupted online. Monaiseer has previously engaged with the historical construction of conflict; in these works he considers how conflict reaches us through technology\, through compressed images\, screens\, news feeds and endlessly circulating footage\, producing realities that are experienced at a distance and often manipulated. \nTo 1 October.
