SUMMARY:Laura Lappi: Metamorphosis
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition in the MENA region for the Finnish artist. Her work draws inspiration from ancient basilicas\, cathedrals\, and other Scandinavian wooden structures. Using wood as her primary medium\, Lappi establishes a direct connection to her homeland and the natural world through sculptures that evoke architectural qualities. \nTransformation is central to Lappi’s practice; the wall sculptures from her Basilica series show wood transitioning from a living organism to a shaped\, discarded\, reused\, cut\, and organised material. Layering wood to form intricate geometric patterns\, she employs a charring technique using fire; the material  undergoes a profound metamorphosis\, assuming an in-between state\, half-dead and half-alive\, resistant to preservation. \nThe exhibition also introduces a collection of drawings that offer a glimpse into her creative process and inner thoughts. These drawings serve as a bridge between the conceptual realm on paper and the tangible manifestation of transformation in her art\, providing an illuminating perspective on her artistic journey. \nTo 26 April. \n  \n

SUMMARY:A Love Letter to Beirut
DESCRIPTION:Sotheby’s has an upcoming London auction devoted to artists from or inspired by Lebanon’s capital\, and Dubai is getting a preview in the form of a selection of the works that will be in the sale. The full complement includes work from nearly 50 artists; around 30 of them are actually Lebanese\, the others are from Iraq\, Egypt\, Syria and Palestine. We don’tknow exactly how many or who will be shown at Sotheby’s Dubai\, but we’re told the highlights of the auction include paintings\, watercolours\, mixed-media and sculptures by the likes of Etel Adnan\, Huguette Caland\, Ayman Baalbaki\, Mona Saudi\, Aref El Rayess and Saloua Raouda Choucair. \nFollow the abbreviated Dubai show (26 February to 1 March) the exhibition moves to New Bond Street from 19-22 April in advance of the sale on 23 April. \nAlso on exhibition at the same are a couple of pieces from Sotheby’s bi-annual Modern & Contemporary Middle East auction (London\, 23 April)\, notably two rare paintings by Bahman Mohasses from 1964. \nAbove: Mahmoud Saïd\, Maisons à Aïtanit (1951). SUMMARY:Rachid Koraïchi: An Ode to Intertwined Histories
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition with examples of many of the disciplines and media that made up Koraïchi’s practice\, all “showcasing his abiding fascination with the creation of deeply layered seams within the spiritual\, political and intellectual”.\nKoraïchi often speaks of belonging entirely to writing\, wanting to reveal the secrets of texts by great mystic poets and writers such as Rûmî\, Ibn Arabi\, Attar and Rabia Al Adawya. “Writing and drawing are not two different things'” he said in a recent interview. “They are essentially one and the same – they come\, so to speak\, from the same breath”. Koraïchi’s ‘alphabet of memory’ is anchored in the world of glyphs and cyphers\, where he nurses his fascination for texts function\, aesthetics and cultural significance. \nThe exhibition is centred on the two site-specific scultpures Les Prieurs and Les Priants (above); accompanying them will be 2D work ranging from 3m silk organza tapestries to meticulously detailed canvases. \nTo 25 May. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Ana Mazzei: How to disappear
DESCRIPTION:The Brazilian artist has been given regular solo shows at Green Art Gallery every couple of years\, and they’re always interesting. Her widely (and sometimes wildly) experimental practice appropriates different materials\, connecting to the environments in which she works; art\, architecture and landscapes are connected in installations\, settings and objects\,”like pieces and fragments of myths\, lives and fictions … At other times\, her works function as observation devices framing this vast repertoire from a specific point of view”. SUMMARY:Manjit Bawa: I Was Born a Poet …
DESCRIPTION:Paintings and drawings by Manjit Bawa (1941-2008)\, a modernist master of 20th-century Indian figuration whose work is distinguished by expressive line and colour. To 30 April. \nThe exhibition marks the inauguration of Volte Art Projects’ new Alserkal Avenue space under the name Volte Masters – the focus of which “will be to showcase international modern masters and create new art historical dialogues around their work”. \nThe main direction would appear to be the promotion of modern Indian masters in particular; for Alserkal Art Week\, two works by the noted Indian video artist Nalini Malani are being presented by Alserkal Avenue with support from Volte Art Projects. Curated by Nada Raza\, Director of Alserkal Arts Foundation\, these will be at Concrete between 25 February and 3 March – an evening outdoor projection of the multimedia installation Ballad of a Woman (2023)\, with Malani’s 2020 Whitechapel commission Can You Hear Me? showing inside the space. \nAbove: Manjit Bawa\, Krishna (offset print). SUMMARY:Farah Al Qasimi: Toy World
DESCRIPTION:The Third Line’s fourth solo exhibition with Farah Al Qasimi\, Brooklyn based but Abu Dhabi born\, is a collection of still and moving images in colour and – for the first time – black and white too. \n“Black and white images automatically historicize\,” she says. Adds the gallery: “The glossy veneer of history allows us to indulge in theory immune from personal responsibility. Too often\, we forget that the now we live is but prototype for future history.” This looks like being an important show\, about images\, meaning and how the links between them need to be decoded. “All we have are our sigils\, these images. Without them\, we lie alone\, prostrate in the desert under a starless sky …” \nTo 19 April. \nAbove: Farah Al Qasimi\, Camel Bones n.d. (archival inkjet print)

SUMMARY:Faisal Samra: Immortal Moment II – Coping with the Shock
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition with the second body of work from Faisal Samra’s Immortal Moment project\, artworks created through the accumulation of instances that push the viewer to question the opportunities of a single moment. In the first chapter of this project\, Faisal describes the technique as an expression of emotions; for the current show he defines the outcome as a shock; the exhibition will reveal the process of Coping with the Shock. \n“The dialogue between the abstract and figurative\, conceptually or formalistically\, is essential to Faisal’s work. Time\, being one of the most abstract ideas\, becomes figurative when Faisal visually notes down specific points in time through the use of charcoal and paint. The result is formalistically abstract\, but the final creation becomes figurative through several interventions\, which represent a culmination of temporal instances.” \nTo 15 April. \nAbove: Faisal Samra\, PSF-P2 (2023) \n  \n

SUMMARY:Alserkal Lates
DESCRIPTION:Alserkal Lates takes place in the middle of Alserkal Art Week\, so there should be more than two dozen exhibitions in Avenue galleries open till 10pm (half of them taking the opportunity to open on the night) – with the chance to see art but also to chat with curators\, artists and artsworld movers ‘n’ shakers. There will be scheduled artist- and curator-led tours of some of the exhibitions\, too\, which is always going to be interesting. \nAlso opening is This is Not Your Grave\, a new commission by Dima Srouji that marks the return of Alserkal’s programme of public art commissions for 2024. This edition is curated by the American art historian and gallery curator Zoé Whitley under the umbrella title ‘Walk With Me’; apparently she was particularly struck by Alserkal Avenue’s accessibility and cultural and experiential offerings for audiences on foot rather than by car; the 2024-25 commissions will be “ambitious new works whose expressive modes make concepts physically palpable\, immediately relatable and widely accessible. Dima Srouji will lead a guided tour of This is Not Your Grave at 11.30am on 28 February. \nWhitley has also curated the Majlis Talks programme\, running from 4pm under the umbrella title Let the beauty we love be what we do. She’s taking part in one of the sessions with Dima Srouji; there’s also Mandy El-Sayegh in conversation with Sara Raza\, Abbas Akhavan\, Salima Hashmi\, and Graciela Magnoni. The event will conclude with a lecture performance by Himali Singh Soin and David Soin Tappeser. \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Pieter Obels and Hermann Nitsch: Momentous Convergence
DESCRIPTION:You wouldn’t normally put these two artists together; but the gallery describes this show as “a platform that showcases a compelling dialogue between their distinct artistic visions”\, one that “celebrates abstract and profound concepts while highlighting the intriguing harmony between the artists despite their distinct stylistic approaches”. \nPieter Obels (b.1968) transforms steel into sculptures that defy its inherent rigidity\, creating light\, graceful pieces with organic shapes. Here he presents a collection inspired by the beauty of Dubai. “When you look at my sculptures you start to follow the lines; ‘Where do I begin and where do I go.’ It’s like travelling\, finding new roads\, walking unknown paths. For me\, showing my sculptures in Dubai feels the same. A new place to explore and meet. It’s a great adventure that starts in my studio and brings me new unknown encounters. I follow.” \nThe art of Hermann Nitsch (1938-2022)\, rooted in Expressionism and religious symbolism\, aims to be more intense and provocative. His art\, especially through the Theatre of Orgies and Mysteries series\, aimed to engage all senses\, often incorporating intense and provocative elements such as flesh and blood to explore themes of tragedy and passion. \nTo 15 March. \nAbove: (left) Pieter Obels\, No One Else in Mind (2023) – (right) Hermann Nitsch\, KK_15_13 (2013) \n

SUMMARY:Jamal Bassiouni: The World of Mirrors
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition for the noted Egyptian artist’s vivid and poignant paintings exploring ancient Egyptian beliefs regarding enlightenment and the afterlife. As the artist puts it: “In The world of Mirrors we say what is above is what is below\, a soul to heaven and a body to earth. A journey starts as the sun sets inside of us and we are to receive the resurrection while we live. A process of pain and suffering to happiness and pleasure. Never forget that the words are\nnot the reality\, only reality is the reality; pictures\, symbols\, lines that cut through time\, without a beginning and without an end”. \nTo 15 April. \nAbove: Jamal Bassiouni\, Flowers of The Blacksea (2024)

SUMMARY:Flavio Lucchini: Hair
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of 23 works by the Italian art director/publisher of high fashion magazines. They’re highly graphic in style\, with bold lines and strong colours\, and as the title implies they consider women through the hair\, the only precise detail in a face without features. Says the artist: “These are not portraits. They are memories of emotions  … At my age\, I take pleasure in seeing life full of hope. The faces that come to mind I see as flowers in a garden or in the fields. All beautiful\, all different. They don’t have features but colours. They sway in the wind\, gaze into the eyes of the future\, and are recognised by detail …” \nTo 31 March. \nAbove: Flavio Lucchini\, Lola from the Hair series (2023)

SUMMARY:Katya Muromtseva: Over the Slopes of Speech
DESCRIPTION:The New-York based artist gets her first show in the UAE\, featuring works she created in Dubai during her time at the NIKA Project Space Research and Residency programme – monumental watercolour triptychs that relate to the narratives and histories of women immigrants. Muromtseva is known for her socially engaged practice and large-scale paintings\, videos\, and installations that refer to personal and collective memory; these works are based on interactions the artist had with immigrants\, both in the USA and during a month-long visit to the UAE as part of the residency. SUMMARY:March Meeting 2024
DESCRIPTION:Sharjah Art Foundation’s annual convening of artists\, curators\, scholars and arts practitioners from around the world to discuss issues in contemporary art focuses this time on collectives whose practice intertwines artmaking and community building in various forms of collaboration that advance social justice. \nThrough talks\, roundtable discussions\, lectures\, workshops\, performances and more\, MM 2024 invites participants to radically reimagine more inclusive\, equitable\, sustainable and liveable futures. It will examine collaborative methods and modalities that both reappraise artistic\, curatorial and activist approaches and reconfigure the role of art and artists in our current lived realities. It also considers alternative forms of coming together\, such as learning platforms\, activist movements\, correspondences or publishing\, which can serve as toolkits for social justice\, solidarity and political mobilisation. \n

SUMMARY:Echoes of the Orient
DESCRIPTION:The inaugural exhibition of the brand new Bassam Freiha Art Foundation is curated from the private collection of Bassam Said Freiha to offer a perspective into how the Middle East has been perceived\, portrayed and romanticised over time – particularly the depiction of femininity. As Prof Faredah Al-Murahhem notes: “Western Orientalists in the 19th century often fantasized about the harem and the veiled women\, leading to a skewed understanding of the concept”\, with paintings often presenting scenarios that were inauthentic or sensationalized from an Islamic viewpoint. \nTo challenge such stereotypes and in order to foster a deeper intercultural dialogue\, the exhibition juxtaposes Western portrayals with works by Arab artists. Featured alongside works by Rudolphe Ernst\, Léon Comerre\, Paul Leroy\, Jan-Baptist Huysmans and Fabio Fabbi from the Bassam Freiha Collection are significant works on loan by Arab modernists\, including Habib Srour\, Moustafa Faroukh\, Cesar Gemayel\, Tawfik Tarek\, and early works by the acclaimed Emirati artist Abdul Qader Al Rais. \nTo 15 August. \nAbove: Rudolf Ernst (1854–1932)\, Odalisque (undated) \n

SUMMARY:From Kalīla wa Dimna to La Fontaine: Travelling through Fables
DESCRIPTION:A showcase for the power of fables from different cultures and eras\, providing “the opportunity to explore the universal themes and lessons found in these stories and understand the significance they hold in shaping our world”. It’s divided into three main sections – Travelling Tales\, Telling Stories\, and The Fables Today – with more than 132 artworks on display\, an eclectic collection of rare manuscripts\, paintings\, contemporary works\, and more pieces from France\, Saudi Arabia\, and the Emirates. \nCurated by Annie Vernay-Nouri\, Former Chief Curator\, Oriental Manuscripts Department\, Bibliothèque nationale de France\, the exhibition is held in partnership with Bibliothèque nationale de France and France Muséums and is supported by Van Cleef & Arpels. \nThe exhibition traces the origins of the genre in India and Greece\, following its evolution through the contributions of two key figures: Aesop in the Greco-Roman world and Ibn al-Muqaffa in the Arab-Islamic world. Says curator Annie Vernay-Nouri: “For the first time\, visitors have a unique opportunity to witness and compare rare and precious artworks representing three distinct traditions of fables. The Eastern and Western traditions\, rooted in a shared universal heritage\, have evolved independently without direct contact\, each charting its own course. It is only through the works of the eminent fabulist Jean de La Fontaine that these traditions have finally converged and united in a singular collection showcased at Louvre Abu Dhabi.” \nNotable loans from Louvre Abu Dhabi’s partners include one of the oldest illustrated manuscripts of Ibn al-Muqaffa’s Kalīla wa Dimna from the Ayyubid dynasty (1171-1250 CE); ‘The Two Adventurers and the Wondrous Writ’ illustrated by the noted French Rococo painter\, tapestry designer\, and illustrator Jean-Baptiste Oudry with engraving by Bonaventure Louis Prévost; an engraving of Emile Bayard’s nineteenth century Portrait of Jean de La Fontaine; and La Fontaine composant ses fables by François Vayron\, engraver. \nFor the first time Louvre Abu Dhabi is utilising artificial intelligence within the mediation devices for this exhibition\, allowing visitors to create their own fable by selecting characters and a moral\, which they can download by scanning a QR code. Visitors can customise their fables. There’s also an accompanying range of cultural and educational programmes; and as a final killer point\, admission to the museum is free for children under the age of 18 … \nTo 21 July. \nAbove: Ibn al-Muqaffa‘ (c.720-756)\, Kalīla wa Dimna. SUMMARY:Amir Khojasteh: Living in a Burning House
DESCRIPTION:“Amidst the unsettled times of an uprising in Iran\, grappling with uncertainties\, sadness\, and paradoxes\, artist Amir Khojasteh sought solace in his studio and tried to make sense of what was happening … In this topsy-turvy world\, the artist persisted in painting and crafting head sculptures of the divs\, as if triumphing over them in a parallel timeline” (a div in Persian mythology is a supernatural creature or demon\, often depicted as a powerful and malevolent entity with magical abilities). Khojasteh’s sculptures symbolise victory over the divs\, capturing the demons in their defeated state. \nAlongside the heads are paintings that echo monotype print accidents and textures on canvas. Every painting can be read as a self-portrait or a commentary on a bizarre situation. “Dazed by the smoke of the ongoing fire\, one will need to find ways to make that situation more apprehensible. Khojasteh laughs at what he witnessed\, and through this laughter\, he exposes its contingency\, its ephemerality\, and irreality [sic]”. \nTo 28 May. \nAbove: Amir Khojasteh\, Head of Div No8 (2024) \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Kenia Almaraz Murillo: Invitation to a Mystical Dreamland
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition in the region for the Bolivian artist is a group of six new and five existing works that represent “a journey into a dreamlike universe where her dreams blend vivid memories with powerful symbolic language”. The artist meticulously documents and illustrates her most striking dreams\, blurring the lines between reality and imagination; “each dream is a tapestry of experiences\, weaving together fragments of her subconscious with symbols that resonate deeply within her psyche”.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Ahmad Moualla: Combustions
DESCRIPTION:The Syrian artist’s first solo exhibition with this gallery (and his first show in eight years) is a series of new works on paper created in 2023. Considered one of the pioneers of modernism and expressionism in Syria\, Moualla was the first of his peers to introduce interactive performance to his work; though he no longer incorporates performance\, the act and process of creating his works is a performance in itself – he’s known for his dramatic\, intensely theatrical large-scale canvasses. \n“Blurring the boundaries between fact and fiction\, consciousness and subconsciousness\, Moualla reflects on the ambiguities that are constantly in our minds and part of our daily lives” says the gallery. ” Calling for a reconsideration of socially rooted axioms\, specifically in Arab society and through the process of a war\, the artist intentionally poses questions ideas of power\, free-will\, and choices.” \n  \n
