SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Reynier Llanes: Reverie
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition inspired by French philosopher Gaston Bachelard’s comment on ‘reverie’ – “Reverie is not a mind vacuum. It is rather the gift of an hour which knows the plenitude of the soul”\, a space where imagination and memory intertwine to reveal profound truths about the self and the world. The Cuban painter embodies that vision in this exhibition\, curated by Celine Azem; “his canvases invite viewers into a dreamlike space where personal and collective histories merge … His work does not retreat from life’s struggles but reinterprets them\, transforming them into compositions where emotions\, memories\, and aspirations coexist in harmony”. \nTe exhibition introduces the latest works from Llanes’ The Poet series\, bridging ancestral echoes with contemporary realities; The Poet is an ethereal\, enigmatic figure drifting between memory and imagination\, past and present\, to become a vessel for the viewer’s own reflections. “The Poet is both wanderer and witness\, a keeper of memory embodying the ever-shifting human condition.”

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Thomas Lélu: Calm Down It’s Just Art
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Lélu’s practice interweaves photography\, installation art\, and textual elements\, frequently featuring the appropriation and recontextualisation of imagery from popular culture and media to interrogate themes of contemporary society\, consumerism\, and media representation. His methodology of exploration\, archiving\, and contextualization positions the French artist as “one of the archaeologists of our present epoch”\, as the gallery puts it.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Ahmad Kasha: Offerings – The War Series
DESCRIPTION:Ahmad Kasha’s complete War Series (2018–2025) is presented here for the first time in association with Fann à Porter. Influenced by various traditions of war art\, the series reflects on the psychological toll of violence on people\, animals\, nature\, and in the essence of art across time; Kasha has tendered this meditation on the condition of humanity in the shadow of war through arresting colour palettes and large-scale paintings which convey both fragility and overwhelming violence.

SUMMARY:Nima Nabavi: Sunrise at the Vortex
DESCRIPTION:The second solo exhibition by Nima Nabavi at the gallery features new works that mark a significant evolution in the artist’s practice\, reflecting a deepened commitment to introspection\, geometry\, and modes of making that embrace technology alongside traditional tools. Created in concentrated bursts within makeshift studios in Roswell\, Brooklyn\, Los Angeles\, and Dubai\, the resulting works “exude increasing complexity and intensity in both form and colour” as the gallery puts it. \nBorn in Iran in 1978\, Nima Nabavi is a self-taught artist now based between Dubai and New York. His practice centres on grid-based compositions of elaborately layered\, ordered forms; this mathematical approach and repetitive numeric symbolism rely heavily on advanced planning\, precise calculations\, and self-developed methodologies to ensure the vital structural accuracy of each work – “this contemplative execution of intricate geometries aims to build complexity out of simple forms and reveal the emergent harmony and inherent beauty of our shared reality”. \nTo 27 July. \nAbove: Nima Nabavi\, Roswell2223 (2023)

SUMMARY:Richi Bhatia: Antevasin – the one who sits at the border of two worlds
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition at Gallery Isabelle for the UAE-based Indian artist. Her practice spans drawing\, performance\, object-making\, food interventions\, and assemblage; says the gallery\, “inviting us to engage with liminality\, her work challenges the normative categories that shape our understanding of the world and our relationships with its human and nonhuman inhabitants … Her work is at once intimate and transnational. It asks us to sit uncomfortably with the deep interconnections between heritage\, livelihood\, home\, and community-making with various forms of violence and exploitation”. \nAntevasin – the one who sits at the border of two worlds – serves as a guiding figure in this world. Through both process and form\, Bhatia’s work illuminates the porous\, shifting boundaries between life and death; Bhatia grounds much of her practice in fish and meat markets\, engaging with the lives of humans and animals whose labour and bodies are entangled within the global food industry. \nTo 10 September. \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Zhou Song: Supernatural·Algorithm
DESCRIPTION:Zhou Song’s solo show echoes traditional Chinese landscape painting but employs symbolic imagery to explore relationships between nature\, technology\, and faith. The ‘anthropomorphic tree’ is central\, serving as a metaphor for nature’s alienation by technology – “these trees retain natural forms while merging with human features\, hinting at a future possibility: as algorithms silently infiltrate every corner of nature\, can it preserve its primal purity? Or will it inevitably fuse with human civilisation\, becoming an entirely new entity?”

SUMMARY:Summer Collective: Wavering Hope
DESCRIPTION:Ayyam Gallery’s summer group show celebrates and questions the current siutation in Syria with works by Kais Salman\, Khaled Takreti\, Tammam Azzam\, Abdalla Al Omari\, Othman Moussa\, Safwan Dahoul\, Thaier Helal\, Elias Izoli\, Abdul-Karim Majd Al-Beik\, Mohannad Orabi\, Nihad Al-Turk\, and Yasmine Al Awa. \nAs Ayyam marks two decades of championing Syrian contemporary art\, this exhibition provides a testament to a generation that has not only survived history\, but shaped it – as the gallery says\, “For over two decades of conflict\, displacement\, and resistance\, Syrian artists have relied on their creative practices as a lifeline. Through these practices\, they have fought against erasure\, preserved memory\, and expressed truths too heavy for language alone …” The fall of the Assad regime in December has led to a new chapter: “even in this long-awaited moment\, a deeper question surfaced: was this truly an end\, or merely the next turn in a long cycle of hope and despair?” \nThis year’s Summer Collective echoes that feeling and also reflects on Ayyam’s own journey. Through their individual visions\, the artists in the ummer Collective map the emotional\, political\, and cultural aftermath of conflict\, and the fragile hope that emerges in its wake. Says the gallery: “The show is a reminder that in Syria\, hope is rarely straightforward. It is layered with doubt\, shadowed by memory\, and always vulnerable to being undone. Yet it endures. And in the hands of these artists\, it is made visible – transformed into images\, forms\, and gestures that challenge us to remember\, to reflect\, and to imagine something beyond despair”. \nTo 5 September. \nAbove: Othman Moussa\, The Terror Group (2013)

SUMMARY:Ihab Ahmad: I PUT MY BRAIN ON PAUSE!
DESCRIPTION:The new body of work in this solo exhibition marks a turning point in Ihab Ahmad’s practice – “a move toward instinct\, spontaneity\, and emotional exploration” as the gallery puts it. Smiling faces populate the canvases\, each a reflection of the people and encounters that have left a joyful imprint on his life; new materials\, oil and spray paint\, are applied on linen to create richly layered\, expressive surfaces that blur the line between abstraction and figuration\, “reflecting a deeper trust in intuition and emotional release”. \nAlongside the paintings\, Ahmad will be showing a new series of sculptures that echo the playful\, totemic language of this visual world. \nTo 20 August.

SUMMARY:Mohammad Alfaraj: Seas are sweet\, fish tears are salty
DESCRIPTION:The first institutional solo exhibition of Mohammad Alfaraj brings together installations\, photography\, video works and site-specific commissions that respond to the gardens and outdoor spaces of the Jameel. Central to Alfaraj’s practice is his use of storytelling\, both in written and oral forms; Alfaraj\, who lives and works in the Saudi oasis city of Al-Ahsa\, draws much of his source material from the area’s distinctive agricultural landscapes\, oral traditions and everyday life\, which he expands into universal stories and parables. \nThe exhibition is curated by Rotana Shaker\, curator at Hayy Jameel. It gathers works from the Art Jameel Collection plus new commissions. \nTo 4 January.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Abdullah Al Othman: Structural Syntax
DESCRIPTION:The Saudi artist has long been developing a highly characteristic visual language rooted in the Arabian urban landscapes\, architecture\, and linguistic history. In his work\, In his monumental installations and sculptures Al Othman reflects on the layers of history embedded in the urban fabric. Structural Syntax\, Al Othman’s first solo show in the UAE\, transforms the gallery into an immersive space with pieces that use this visual language to deconstruct traditional systems of meaning\, “offering works that challenge perceptions of the way we interact with the built environment\, culture\, and the spaces we inhabit”.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Bashir Makhoul: The Promise
DESCRIPTION:New works by the noted Palestinian artist. The title The Promise suggests a poetic and ambiguous statement of intent; a promise is made but can also be broken. Makhoul’s practice engages deeply with the concept of home\, with the recurring motif of the house – typically depicted as geometric structures arranged in dense\, chaotic formations\, mirroring the overcrowded conditions of refugee camps and marginalized communities.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Layered Medium: We Are in Open Circuits
DESCRIPTION:Subtitled explicitly ‘Contemporary Art from Korea\, 1960s to Today’\, this exhibition is a selection of works from the Seoul Museum of Art\, curated by SeMA’s Kyung-Hwan Yeo and Maya El Khalil for the Abu Dhabi Festival\, and it aims to cover the “legacy of material and conceptual combination\, exchange\, hybridity\, and innovation” in the radical Korean contemporary art scene. \nThe title echoes Nam June Paik’s vision of ‘open circuits’\, where connection and meaning flow beyond boundaries; so the exhibition immerses the viewer in “the fluid intersections of consciousness\, technology\, and art”\, specifically showing “how artists work with varied technologies to intervene in\, interpret and mediate different scales of experience\, from the individual\, the archival and the collective\, to the abstract and yet to become …” \n

What influence do these texts written by AI agents have on visual productions\, and how enduringly do they shape what was once conceived of as collective memory? … In this exhibition\, we have invited artists whose works engage with classical literature\, examine scientific imagery within the context of its interpretation\, engage in\nconversations with AI identities\, or consider machine sounds as creators of independent poetics”. \nThe artists: \nAbdulghani Alanahawi\nBrian Gonzales\nBao Li\nMarcel Buehler\nDaniela Friebel\nMutasim Al Kubaisi\nJens Lystraeten\nChristiana De Marchi\nUnaiza Ismail\nIsaac Sullivan\nTor Seidel\nCharlie Koolhaas\nShahad Mohamed AlBlooshi

SUMMARY:Tajammul
DESCRIPTION:The XVA group show for the summer\, curated by Carina Vicente\, promises “beauty and grace\, capturing the aesthetics of the evolving art landscape in the contemporary Middle East” – the title comes from the Arabic root word for beauty (jamaal)\, “signifying efforts to make oneself beautiful in appearance or courteous in deed … In this way\, Tajammul implies a form of grace that comes from infusing places\, spaces\, and situations with a sense of elegant beauty and social ease. It reflects the way that the United Arab Emirates is not only a place of fine art\, high culture\, sweeping architecture\, and dynamic change\, but a place of close connections\, loyal friendships\, and warm hospitality. Certainly it’s an impressive (and impressively diverse) roster of participants. \nThe artists: \n\n\n\nBasil Alkazzi\nHussein Al-Mohasen\nCharlotte de Bekker\nCC (Alireza Asbahi)\nImran Channa\nElizabeth Dorazio\nOussama Garti\nMahmoud Hamadani\nDavid Howarth\nRichard Ketley\nBehdad Lahooti\nColleen Quigley\nTor Seidel\nMoussa Tiba\nMorteza Zahedi\n\n\n\nTo 11 September.

SUMMARY:No Trespassing
DESCRIPTION:Ishara’s first summer exhibition\, curated by Priyanka Mehra\, features six UAE-based and South Asian artists exploring their relationship with the street – “a collection of individual experiences that alternate between chaotic and orderly\, gritty and beautiful\, uninhibited and curated … ‘No Trespassing’ looks at the streets as a site of deconstruction and reinvention\, continually shaping and being shaped by those who pass through them”. So signposts\, building materials\, pavements\, lights\, street art\, scrapheaps and human traces all become inscriptions of a city’s movement. \nH11235 (Kiran Maharjan) was unable to be present on-site to create the piece\, so his large-scale mixed-media work explores the possibilities of mark-making from a distance. An abstraction of a digital rendering presented opposite\, the work” distils the intertwined bodily and architectural elements shown in the original” while incorporating locally sourced building materials” and “explores the impact of our material surroundings on the psyche”. \nRami Farook has carved out four square metres of the gallery’s back wall to reveal its hidden infrastructure and reflect on the ownership of space – and art. \nIn the second gallery\, magpie favourite Fatspatrol (Fathima Mohiuddin) presents ‘The World Out There’\, comprising “scavenged” objects – discarded street signs\, scraps of wood and posters – marked with gestural drawings that extend beyond the mounted pieces and onto the surrounding wall. Adopting the persona of the flâneur – a solitary figure who wanders through a city\, observing and contemplating the urban landscape – the artist collects such objects to rewrite their narratives using her own voice and language. \nSara Alahbabi’s ‘For a Better Modern Something’\, an installation that explores Abu Dhabi’s evolving urban fabric\, uses cement blocks printed with maps and joined together with LED tube lights to create a scaffolding-like structure \nKhaled Esguerra’s installation in the third gallery\, challenges ongoing efforts to conceal the disorderliness of urban centres. Titled ‘Heritage Legacy Authentic’\, the work responds to the redevelopment of historic neighbourhoods\, carried out with the promise of preserving heritage and authenticity. The work invites viewers to trash the sheets of copier paper laid on the floor and featuring words drawn from the promotional messaging of such projects. \nTo 30 August. \nAbove: Fatspatrol\, The World Out There (2025: details). SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Eltiqa: How to Work Together?
DESCRIPTION:More 80 artworks by the Palestinian artist collective Eltiqa\, \nEltiqa (Arabic for “encounter”) is an artist collective from Gaza City founded in 2000. Eltiqa members have developed artistic practices together – including the setting up of a dedicated exhibition and workshop space in Gaza City\, and supporting younger generations of artists through workshops\, exhibitions and by offering a space to meet and dialogue. \nEltiqa: How to Work Together? includes a selection of Eltiqa’s artworks spanning several years of collaboration. The works on display were collected from various locations worldwide; some artworks produced and exhibited years ago remained with institutions and individuals because of the difficulty of returning them to Gaza\, other works were transported out of Gaza during the ongoing genocide. \nIncluded in the exhibition is an annotated timeline that traces the history of Eltiqa – the collective’s formation and early days\, their efforts at creating structures of support for themselves and others\, and the historical\, political and personal events that have marked their lives as a collective and as individuals. Through anecdotes recounted by members of Eltiqa and research conducted by The Question of Funding collective\, the displayed narratives accentuate Eltiqa’s practice and survival amid political\, social\, economic and personal distress.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Ihab Ahmad: I PUT MY BRAIN ON PAUSE!

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Malik Thomas Jalil Kydd: Garden of Murmurs
DESCRIPTION:Malik Thomas Jalil Kydd’s body of work delves into his Iraqi heritage\, while bridging painting\, drawing and fibre art – “reconciling the tactility of textiles with a sensitive examination of form”\, as the gallery puts it. “Focusing primarily on the male figure drawn to a scale slightly larger than life-size\, Kydd has developed a poetic dialogue between material\, identity\, and culture.” His use of natural materials adds another dimension to the works; so sage\, used for dyeing\, is not only part of the creative process but also a spiritual practice grounded in both tradition and personal exploration. Kydd’s use of mixed media – oil\, pastel\, charcoal\, natural dyes – enhances this interplay.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Architectures of the In-Between
DESCRIPTION:A group show featuring Nevine Hamza\, Atefeh Majidi Nezhad\, and Layla Juma. Says the gallery: “Each artist navigates the threshold between structure and sentiment\, material and memory\, between what is seen and what is sensed …” \nHamza’s work draws on her background in design to transform metaphysical ideas into “atmospheric visual compositions that float between sky and ground … using architectural elements to explore the boundaries between earth and sky\, the tangible and the intangible” (see above). Nezhad’s installations offer a more tactile investigation of space; her Zero-Gseries employs delicate lace and translucent materials that appear suspended in midair\, confronting the viewer with a sense of both weightlessness and intimacy.  And Juma’s minimalist geometries use a language of form and repetition that translates social structures into visual rhythm – through drawing\, installation\, and sculpture\, Juma assembles and dissembles patterns to reveal coded systems and moments of alignment.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Nazgol Ansarinia: Instruments of Viewing an Obscurity
DESCRIPTION:Recent projects from the Tehran-born artist. Nazgol Ansarinia’s work examines the systems and networks that underpin her daily life – from everyday objects to routines\, events and experiences. She’s interested in the relationships they form to make up a larger social context. Ansarinia’s practice reflects upon tensions between private worlds and the wider socioeconomic realm\, and “how local iterations of a culture might act as a site for the hopes and fears of those living in a (faltering) globalised world” as the gallery puts it. This exhibition of recent work ranges across sculpture\, installation\, drawing\, and video\, representing ways of understanding the role of architecture in delineating interior and exterior spaces and private and public spheres.

SUMMARY:Afra Al Dhaheri: Restless Circle
DESCRIPTION:A selection of works by Afra Al Dhaheri that explore the structural effects of tension\, repetition and time provides Sharjah Art Foundation’s first show of Autumn. “Working with materials such as cotton rope\, fabric\, cement and hair\, the artist emphasises slow gestures\, intentional movements and the fatigue that can build from ongoing\, repetitive and even invisible labour …” \nThe exhibition’s title comes from a newly commissioned installation with the same name; that draws inspiration from desert plants that create spiral patterns in the sand as they move with the wind. For Afra Al Dhaheri\, this offers a metaphor for mental exhaustion and collective burnout\, the sense of being endlessly pushed to produce or perform: “in other works\, repetition emerges as a condition of making\, a method shaped by the interplay of tension\, weight and the ongoing rhythm of doing and undoing”. \nRestless Circle is curated by May Alqaydi\, Assistant Curator at the Foundation. \nTo 4 December.
