SUMMARY:Abu Dhabi Art
DESCRIPTION:The 16th edition of Abu Dhabi Art will take place from 19 to 23 November\, as usual at Manarat al Saadiyat. The fair element has more than 140 galleries from 37 countries\, by far the largest number to date – last year’s edition had 102 galleries. And it also means Abu Dhabi Art has overtaken local rival Art Dubai (the March edition of Art Dubai had around 120\, about the same as in 2024). \nMohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak\, chair of DCT Abu Dhabi\, described the fair as “the region’s most influential platform for art and ideas\, a cultural moment where the UAE’s pioneering spirit engages with the global art community”. He may well be right; and as well as the record number of galleries\, Abu Dhabi Art – which from next year will become Frieze Abu Dhabi as a result of a deal with the Frieze art fairs group – continues to promote what its director Dyala Nusseibeh calls “under-represented art histories … From pioneers of the Peruvian Amazon\, Venezuela and Brazil to modernists from Türkiye\, artists from Nigeria’s Osogbo art movement\, Khaleeji trailblazers\, modern artists from North Africa and leading artists from China\, this year’s fair resonates with the globally impactful\, museum-led vision shaping Saadiyat Island’s cultural identity”. \nThe fair itself is organised into five principal sectors: \nModern & Contemporary: for established galleries (who have been operating for at least seven years) with curatorial framework for booth presentations. This is the main section\, with 55 galleries showing. \nSpecial Projects: up to three artist presentations by individual galleries who have been in business for at least three years – more than 50 of these. \nEmerge: for artworks priced under $3\,000 – seven participants this year. \nBidaya: for emerging galleries (operating for less than three years) who are first-time participants. There are three exhibitors. \nFocus: galleries invited to participate with specific artists chosen by a guest curator. This where you will find the Collectors Salon for collectable non-art works; a section for Modern Türkiye\, with three galleries showcasing rarely seen works by modern masters; a Nigeria Spotlight featuring seven galleries from the country; and the Gulf Region focus\, with a good selection of local galleries \nBut as well as the conventional art fair\, Abu Dhabi Art places a lot of emphasis on its public engagement programme – installations\, commissions\, exhibitions\, talks and events throughout the year. Worth catching: \n Beyond Emerging Artists This programme commissions new work from three emerging artists in the UAE. The 2025 edition is curated by Issam Kourbaj\, who has been mentoring Alla Abdunabi\, Salmah Almansoori and Maktoum Marwan Al Maktoum as the three participants this year. \nCommunity Partners Exhibition Since 2018\, Abu Dhabi Art has invited community partners to participate in the fair through thematic exhibitions that foster cultural dialogue and social impact. For 2025 ADMAF is collaborating with Studio Salasil\, a future-focused curatorial studio\, to transform the Community Partners exhibition into a vibrant platform for artistic and cultural dialogue. \nArt + Tech Launched back in 2017\, the Art + Tech programme at Abu Dhabi Art connects students from universities across the UAE with artists working at the intersection of creative expression and emerging technologies. This year’s programme is led by Ahmed Al Attar\, an Emirati robotics engineer and founder of art and technology studio REALIITY. Drawing inspiration from traditional Sadu patterns\, the project will be reimagining heritage through a kinetic projection installation that explores pseudo-randomness\, cultural symbolism\, and technological transformation. \nAnd this year for the first time Abu Dhabi Art will officially feature digital art via its Digital Art Partner\, reimagined – “a new initiative based in the UAE focused on driving adoption of technology and blockchain in the arts”. Its curated selection showcases seven artists with works built on technical and conceptual innovation\, engaging critically with digital formats and pushing creative boundaries; alongside the exhibition\, reimagined is hosting a program of talks and panels discussions with artists\, curators\, and art professionals. \nAbu Dhabi Art is open daily from 2am to 9pm. DESCRIPTION:Art Dubai’s core gallery programme will feature over 120 participants across four sections as befire: Contemporary\, Modern\, Bawwaba (featuring exclusively new work) and Art Dubai Digital. Works on sale are included in the excellent online catalogue for browsing. \n\n\n\nAway from the commercial side the programme includes a series of site-specific works and interventions\, including performances at the fair by Mexican artist Héctor Zamora and an installation by New York-based artist Ania Soliman plus an ambitious new digital installation by Mohammed Kazem\, commissioned by Julius Baer. Alia Zaal Lootah  has curated a selection of Dubai Collection works under the title ‘Encounters’. \nThere’s the always-excellent Global Art Forum (the theme this year is ‘The New New Normal’) and the second edition of Art Dubai Digital’s Digital Summit. The Art Dubai Modern Talks programme is back too\, a series supporting “Art Dubai’s commitment to scholarship and unexplored art histories” that usually delivers some good isnights; also worth catching will be the Conversations with Artists strand of generally informal chats. \nAnd at the end of each day there’s music and dancing at The Art Bar on Fort Island – under the label Art Dubai After Dark\, we’re prmised “some of the best up-and-coming DJs from around the world and locally\, delivering great vibes throughout the night”. \nArt Dubai takes place at Madinat Jumeirah from 18 to 20 April\, 2-9 pm (midday to 6pm on 20 March). There are also invitation-only previews on 16 and 17 April. A one-day ticket is AED 100\, a three-day pass is AED 200; you can buy tickets at the site\, but it makes sense to pre-purchase via the Art Dubai app or Platinumlist.

DESCRIPTION:World Art Dubai is back for its eleventh edition\, with more than 10\,000 artworks from 400+ galleries and individual artists who come from more than 65 different countries. WAD has grown out of its early days as a simple lo-fi affordable art fair into a bustling\, buzzy four days. It still majors on the affordable art of the title (prices from $100\, we’re told); and since there’s no jury to oversee applications\, it’s likely to be variable in quality. Abu Dhabi Art’s director Dyala Nusseibeh said that this year “represents a significant moment in the fair’s history … We are delighted to be able to attract such a diverse range of artists and galleries from around the world”. \nShe added that the growth was due in part to the work of Abu Dhabi Art’s global gallery representatives. Those are responsible for selecting/inviting galleries in four different sections – three geographies (Hong Kong\, North Africa and West Asia\, and Latin America) plus one for ‘Sustainability’. \n“The presence of so many new galleries at the Fair signifies how dynamic the local and regional art market has become over the last 15 years. By working closely with curators\, gallery representatives\, galleries and artists\, we are also ensuring that our gallery presentations offer unparalleled access to art histories and research\, ensuring visitors have the opportunity to better understand these wide-ranging global positions.” \nThe meat of the fair\, the Modern & Contemporary section\, will have 40 galleries. \nThe 2023 public programme includes commissions for Almaha Jaralla\, Samo Shalaby and Latifa Saeed in the Beyond Emerging Artists strand. The 2023 Gateway exhibition\, entitled Maqam\, is a show for Emirati artist Hashel Al Lamki. And works for sites across the emirate have been commissioned from Nujoom Al Ghanem and Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim. \nThe fair’s Visual Campaign Artist for 2023 is Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim – noted for his commitment to the environment and natural beauty of his birthplace\, Khorfakkan. The Visual Campaign Artist is tasked with creating the fair’s visual campaign\, and the chosen images are then used across marketing materials to define the identity of the fair. \nAbu Dhabi Art is at the Manarat Al Saadiyat as usual\, open 5-9pm 2-9pm for general admission on Thursday 23 to Sunday 26 November.
