SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Art Here 2024
DESCRIPTION:Louvre Abu Dhabi’s Art Here 2024\, now in its fourth edition\, has rapidly become a significant entry in the Middle East’s art exhibition calendar – a regional competition for 3D work that benefits from sponsorship by luxe watchmaker Richard Mille to the extent that at the end of the exhibition one of the five artists shown will get a not insignificant $60\,000 cash award as part of the Richard Mille Art Prize. \nThis year\, Louvre Abu Dhabi and guest curator Simon Njami invited responses to the theme ‘Awakenings’; the selected artists are tasked with translating the concept of openness into visual forms via sculptures or audiovisual installations “that address questions of today and the near future”. \nThere were 230 submissions in total\, and five have been selected for the exhibition. The competition this year has been expanded to include North Africa alongside the GCC\, and three of the shortlist came from outside the Gulf. Franco-Tunisian artist Férielle Doulain-Zouari explores the coexistence of natural and artificial worlds via installations\, sculptures\, and weaving. Moataz Nasr from Egypt investigates the geopolitics and social development of Egypt and Africa\, testing the notion of identity and belonging in a world of globalisation. And Nicène Kossentini (Tunisia) uses video to capture the slow transformation of people and things\, revealing intimate places and bodies and uncovering the buried truths of her heritage. \nThe other two on the shortlist will probably be more familiar to local arty audiences – Lamya Gargash (Dubai) and Sarah Almehairi (Abu Dhabi). Gargash usually works in film and photography to document the essence of inhabited and abandoned spaces\, delving into cultural heritage amidst rapid modernisation\, and capturing the beauty of human trace and the value of the mundane – “my desire for seclusion\, and my grieving for our inevitable fate\, has led me to find beauty in ordinary things and bring to life these reticent moments in time …” She’s a Third Line artist and has had several shows there\, including one of our favourites. \nSarah Almehairi has worked in various media – sculpture\, painting\, book art\, fibre art\, photography\, poetry – to explore themes of identity\, language\, materiality and memory. Now signed with Carbon 12\, she was part of the 2019 Youth Takeover at Jameel Arts Centre\, was one of Abu Dhabi Art’s 2022 Beyond: Emerging Artists (a group which also went to Cromwell Place the following year)\, and was commissioned for Alserkal Avenue’s public art projects in 2022 for Alserkal Art Week – she transformed the passages alongside Concrete into a rather good visual poem with her work don’t overlook the weather (as your thoughts collect)\, asking visitors to linger and observe both the earth and the sky as they passed through. \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Manolo Valdés: Domesticity
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition of small sculptures by the celebrated Spanish artist at the gallery’s Atlantis outpost. Noted for his ability to transform familiar forms and classical references into contemporary pieces\, Valdés uses meticulous craftsmanship to recontextualise idioms from the art historical canon. “Through his exploration of form and material\, Valdés offers a compelling aesthetic dialogue between the past and the present” says the gallery.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Nika Neelova: Beghost
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition for the London-based artist that draws inspiration from Buhais Geology Park and Jebel Buhais archaeological site in Al Madam. Neelova’s sculptures\, crafted from a variety of materials including glass\, clay\, and fossilized shark teeth\, offer a speculative view of the ancient marine life that once inhabited the region; each piece tells a story of transformation and decay\, merging chemistry\, alchemy and geology to mirror the constant flux of material exchanges that define our world.

SUMMARY:Pieter Obels and Hermann Nitsch: Momentous Convergence
DESCRIPTION:You wouldn’t normally put these two artists together; but the gallery describes this show as “a platform that showcases a compelling dialogue between their distinct artistic visions”\, one that “celebrates abstract and profound concepts while highlighting the intriguing harmony between the artists despite their distinct stylistic approaches”. \nPieter Obels (b.1968) transforms steel into sculptures that defy its inherent rigidity\, creating light\, graceful pieces with organic shapes. Here he presents a collection inspired by the beauty of Dubai. “When you look at my sculptures you start to follow the lines; ‘Where do I begin and where do I go.’ It’s like travelling\, finding new roads\, walking unknown paths. For me\, showing my sculptures in Dubai feels the same. A new place to explore and meet. It’s a great adventure that starts in my studio and brings me new unknown encounters. I follow.” \nThe art of Hermann Nitsch (1938-2022)\, rooted in Expressionism and religious symbolism\, aims to be more intense and provocative. His art\, especially through the Theatre of Orgies and Mysteries series\, aimed to engage all senses\, often incorporating intense and provocative elements such as flesh and blood to explore themes of tragedy and passion. \nTo 15 March. \nAbove: (left) Pieter Obels\, No One Else in Mind (2023) – (right) Hermann Nitsch\, KK_15_13 (2013) \n

SUMMARY:Katia Al Tal: Appearance
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the abstract sculptures of the Jordanian-French artist.
