SUMMARY:Children's Biennial
DESCRIPTION:What a good idea this is: the Abu Dhabi Festival is running the first outdoor children’s art biennale in the Middle East Under the theme How the World Feels\, the Biennale will explore how children experience the world through touch\, sound\, movement and light. \nFeaturing works and workshops by UAE-based artists and an international collaboration with National Gallery Singapore\, the Biennale – curated by Dana Almazrouei – will offer family sessions\, workshops and an interactive guide Nine participating artists are Alia AlShamsi\, Aya Afaneh\, Hana El-Sagini\, Moza Almatrooshi\, Moza Almazrouei\, Meera Almazrooei\, Nada Almosa and Sarah Afaneh\, plus Indonesian artist Eko Nugroho; says the blurb\, “they will transform Umm Al Emarat Park into a space where audiences of all ages can encounter art through touch\, sound\, movement and light … Through open-ended experiences\, children are invited to experiment\, question\, collaborate\, imagine and create their own meanings”. \nSays Dana Almazrouei: “We wanted to ask the kind of questions adults often stop asking: what stories lie beneath the soil? How does sound travel through a park? Working with each artist\, we thought first about how a child would experience the piece\, and what they might carry with them afterwards … Play is how children come to understand the world. As historian Johan Huizinga observed\, play creates temporary worlds shaped by shared rules and imagination\, and that’s what we hope this park becomes. It isn’t just a way to make art accessible; it’s how children think\, discover and build their own stories\, together.”

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Vantage Point 13
DESCRIPTION:The latest edition of Sharjah Art Foundation’s open-call photography exhibition examines the evolving possibilities of documentary photography through newly commissioned works by six artists – Luisa Dörr\, Latifa AlBokhari\, Sathish Kumar\, Adam Rouhana\, Guanyu Xu and Maheder Haileselassie. \nThe principle is that photography is not simply as a tool for recording reality but can be treated as a medium through which histories and systems of representation are negotiated. So through portraiture and observational strategies\, Dörr\, AlBokhari and Kumar probe the nuances of lived experience\, tracing intimate connections between land and belonging via long-term collaborations with individuals\, families and communities; Rouhana\, Guanyu Xu and Haileselassie explore themes of absence and rupture\, photography as a means of grappling with questions of visibility and with histories interrupted by conflict or erasure. As SAF puts it: “The works position documentary photography as a field in transformation – one defined not by static truths\, but by continual discernment”.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Marilina Marchica and Salmah Almansoori: Traces of Home
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition that brings together works by the Italian artist Marilina Marchica and Emirati artist Salmah Almansoori that are rooted in the landscapes respectively of Sicily and Ghayathi. \nMarchica traces the imprints of abandoned buildings and domestic spaces through drawing\, collage and painting\, using materials such as earth\, charcoal and mineral pigments. Almansoori draws on her personal archive of Ghayathi\, transforming photographs and collected materials\, including palm fibres and desert grasses\, into new works. Between them they explore how art can preserve the memories and histories held by a place\, and how a sense of belonging endures through change …

SUMMARY:Book Cellar Dubai: The Women Are Up to Something
DESCRIPTION:Benjamin Lipscomb’s 2021 book draws on a recently opened archives and extensive correspondence and interviews with those who knew them best to tell the story of four lifelong friends who met at university and made their mark in a male-dominated world. It’s inimical to summarise their philosophical views in a sentence\, but maybe you could say they argued for the objectivity of ethics\, that it possible to live a good life based on courage\, discernment and justice (as opposed to being merely an inert values-free body waiting to be pushed in one direction or another). Some have argued that Lipscomb flattened the philosophical debate in favour of drawing four fascinating real-life people; but it’s still a great read … A good book club choice. \n

SUMMARY:Sofiane Chalal: XXL
DESCRIPTION:Sofiane Chalal’s hip-hop dance performance XXL addresses the thorny issue of being seen as overweight in society. Rather than hide behind euphemisms and concealment\, XXL centres ‘non-standard’ bodies to dismantle pejorative labels and celebrate a journey towards acceptance and recognition. Despite tackling the pain of exclusion\, XXL is conceived as a lighthearted piece; through the spontaneity of its performers\, a chain of diverse personalities come alive on stage. Chalal embraces excess\, generosity and the contagious power of laughter to present a performance that soothes both the body and soul. \nThis is part of the fifth edition of Perform Sharjah\, Sharjah Art Foundation’s season of curated performances that serve as an engaging space for exploring\, remembering and imagining – “treating the body as a site of artistic inquiry\, the programme shifts fluidly between intimate reflection and collective experience”.
