SUMMARY:Children's Biennial
DESCRIPTION:What a good idea this is: the Abu Dhabi Festival is running the first outdoor children’s art biennale in the Middle East Under the theme How the World Feels\, the Biennale will explore how children experience the world through touch\, sound\, movement and light. \nFeaturing works and workshops by UAE-based artists and an international collaboration with National Gallery Singapore\, the Biennale – curated by Dana Almazrouei – will offer family sessions\, workshops and an interactive guide Nine participating artists are Alia AlShamsi\, Aya Afaneh\, Hana El-Sagini\, Moza Almatrooshi\, Moza Almazrouei\, Meera Almazrooei\, Nada Almosa and Sarah Afaneh\, plus Indonesian artist Eko Nugroho; says the blurb\, “they will transform Umm Al Emarat Park into a space where audiences of all ages can encounter art through touch\, sound\, movement and light … Through open-ended experiences\, children are invited to experiment\, question\, collaborate\, imagine and create their own meanings”. \nSays Dana Almazrouei: “We wanted to ask the kind of questions adults often stop asking: what stories lie beneath the soil? How does sound travel through a park? Working with each artist\, we thought first about how a child would experience the piece\, and what they might carry with them afterwards … Play is how children come to understand the world. As historian Johan Huizinga observed\, play creates temporary worlds shaped by shared rules and imagination\, and that’s what we hope this park becomes. It isn’t just a way to make art accessible; it’s how children think\, discover and build their own stories\, together.”

SUMMARY:Mahmoud Moussa: Sculpture\, Form & Memory
DESCRIPTION:The UAE’s first solo exhibition dedicated to the Egyptian sculptor. Mahmoud Moussa (1913–2003) is described by Maha Al Mansoori Art Gallery – which is responsible for this short-run Frieze-adjacent show – as one of the most important figures in Arab modernism. \nCurated by Al Mansoori\, the exhibition is presented in collaboration with Motion Gallery in Cairo. It considers how material can hold memory\, how reduction can intensify expression\, and how subjects drawn from lived experience can achieve a presence that exceeds their immediate reference; as the gallery has it\, “rather than imposing a single interpretation\, it invites sustained attention to the relationship between each work’s physical construction and its emotional register … Moussa’s sculptures offer a compelling proposition: that the significance of sculpture need not depend on scale or spectacle. It may instead reside in the precision of a contour\, the balance of a volume\, or the quiet transformation of stone into a form that remains at once familiar and enigmatic”. \nMaha Al Mansoori Art Gallery will move into a permanent space in the UAE capital early in 2027. \nImage: Mahmoud Moussa\, Untitled (1968)

SUMMARY:Sebastian Mayer: Hannibaby and Zarafa
DESCRIPTION:A public artwork\, performance and community project\, Sebastian Mayer’s Hannibaby draws from an absurd family adventure. Structuring a life-size baby elephant puppet around his toddler’s carrier\, the duo covered a 70km-distance from France into Italy through the Cottian Alps in 2026; Mayer’s trajectory creates a parallel between Hannibal’s storied challenges navigating unchartered landscape and his own encounter with the demands of parenthood. In Sharjah\, Hannibaby manifests as a walkabout performance by the life-sized baby elephant puppet\, alongside a workshop series instructing families in the art of creating and decorating their own 3D elephant masks. It also includes family-friendly movement games and other playful puppetry activities. \nAnother performance\, Zarafa\, retraces the extraordinary journey of the eponymous giraffe – the first to set foot in France in 1827\, a diplomatic gift from Muhammed Ali Pasha of Egypt to Charles X of France. In 2023\, Mayer created a life-size giraffe puppet and walked Zarafa’s original 1000km route from Marseille to Paris. Along the route\, local communities were invited to paint and draw directly onto the giraffe. For Perform Sharjah\, Mayer will use the giraffe puppet to conduct walkabouts for audiences and play host to a community canvas at Bait Obaid Al Shamsi. \nThere are performances at 4.30–6.30pm and again at 6.30–8.30pm. It’s repeated on 15 November. \nThis is part of the fifth edition of Perform Sharjah\, Sharjah Art Foundation’s season of curated performances that serve as an engaging space for exploring\, remembering and imagining – “treating the body as a site of artistic inquiry\, the programme shifts fluidly between intimate reflection and collective experience”.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Maggie Otieno: Sojourner – The Difference Is the Same
DESCRIPTION:New works by the Kenyan artist Maggie Otieno\, her first solo show here since the gallery began representing her in 2024 . Otieno’s practice centres on the transformation of reclaimed and distressed materials.; working across wood\, metal\, and mixed media\, her semi -abstract forms explore layered narratives of history\, memory\, human interaction\, and environmental survival. Her works function as vessels of remembrance and renewal\, grounding social and historical reflection in physical form. \nFeatured in the exhibition are new works based around railway sleepers\, symbols of East Africa’s colonial past. More than 150 years old\, these timbers travelled from India to Kenya for railway lines\, carrying with them the stories of travellers\, labourers\, and communities. Also included are works created during a residency at El Anatsui Studio in Ghana last summer. Sculptures made from fragments of wooden canoes bear traces of memory and passage; some are hinged to resemble books\, evoking the turning of a page and the opening of a new chapter.

SUMMARY:Artist's Room: Bani Abidi
DESCRIPTION:Bani Abidi’s Artist’s Room displays a single body of work\, Trembling hands (2024) – a series of portraits of artists\, journalists\, politicians\, lawyers\, doctors and civil society leaders who publicly spoke out against the genocide of Palestinians\, often using public platforms that exposed them to backlash\, censorship or repression. Drawn in 2024\, the portraits primarily refer to speeches made in late 2023 and early 2024 during the most brutal and deadly period of the Israeli onslaught on Gaza\, also characterised by widespread international inaction. Some of the speakers depicted by Abidi are Palestinian; others spoke in solidarity. \nTo 25 April.
