SUMMARY:𝗔𝗧𝘆𝗽𝗜 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗷𝗮𝗵
DESCRIPTION:ATypI is the Association Typographique International\, the nonprofit global forum for type and typography. It was established in 1957 to unite European type manufacturers at a time of technological change and to promote typography education and awareness in general. Its annual conference has taken place every year since its foundation\, but this is its first time in the Middle East. \nThe programme has four packed days of keynote lectures\, talks\, workshops\, exhibitions\, and “cultural experiences” celebrating typography across languages\, cultures\, and disciplines. The theme is Between — Tradition | Transition | Transformation\, “exploring how typography moves across scripts\, disciplines\, tools\, cultures\, and time”. In fact the sessions look rather less staid and academic than this implies. \nThe member price is $650 for the four days\, and there’s a $300 rate for students.

SUMMARY:MAWASIM: 20 Years of Modern and Contemporary Middle Eastern Art
DESCRIPTION:Christie’s first live auction of fine art in Abu Dhabi takes place on 1 November\, preceded by two viewing days open to all. There will be more than 70 works from six decades of museum-quality art that traces the evolution of artistic practices across the Middle East and North Africa. \nHighlights include … \nPaul Guiragossian\, Noces (1958-59) A vibrant wedding scene that reflects Guiragossian’s enduring themes of home\, community and human connection; the work was exhibited at his first major exhibition in Lebanon in 1959. Estimate: $300\,000-500\,000 \nSamia Halaby\, Yesterday (1978) An important work from Samia Halaby’s 1970s\, when the Palestinian-American artist forged her distinctive language of geometric abstraction. Estimate: $200\,000-300\,000 \nMohamed Melehi\, A30 (1962: right) From Mohamed Melehi’s seminal 1960–62 series of ‘black works’\, reflecting his experimentation with the bianco e nero technique and his engagement with Zen and Sufi. Estimate:$100\,000-150\,000 \nNadia Saikali\, Mandala Bleu Nuit (1982) From an important mature phase of Saikali’s work\, characterised by its meditative and spiritual abstraction. Four other works from the Barjeel Art Foundation are also offered in the sale.  Estimate: $30\,000-50\,000 \nMarwan Kassab-Bachi\, Kopf (Head) (1987) A pivotal moment in the evolution of Marwan’s portraiture\, moving from the horizontally stretched facial landscapes of the 1970s towards the vertical\, frontal heads that became a defining motif of his mature practice. Estimate: $200\,000-300\,000 \nInji Efflatoun\, Untitled (1987) One of Inji Efflatoun’s last works\, representing the culmination of the Egyptian modernist’s practice\, characterised by a lyrical synthesis of nature and the built environment through expressive colour and line. One of eight works from the Dalloul Collection offered in the auction. Estimate: $40\,000-60\,000 \nThe auction will be accompanied by a programme of previews\, talks and educational events; details to be announced “in due course”\, but signing up for Christie’s mailers will presumably get you advance information.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Hisham Sharif: Allusive Veil
DESCRIPTION:Sharif’s first solo exhibition in the UAE presents an autobiographical and very personal series of works about the struggles of private and artist life in a closed society – “a vulnerable\, nuanced presentation of life”. The Bahraini artist uses colour to convey privacy and intimacy\, “expressive hues that meld harsh truths with illusions of what could be … Sharif’s approach ensures that his depiction of these taboos is conveyed through humble depictions that preserve a certain Oriental sensibility\, avoiding the shock value or censorship they might otherwise provoke. The scenes are all about ambiance\, a haze of what was\, what is\, and what could be”.

SUMMARY:Sharjah Film Platform 9
DESCRIPTION:Sharjah Art Foundation’s annual celebration of indie/experimental cinema returns for its ninth edition with a 10-day lineup of films (26 of them) plus talks and artist development programmes. Screenings and events will take place at Mirage City Cinema\, SAF’s open-air theatre in Arts Square\, with some showings at VOX Cinemas at City Centre Al Zahia. \nOpening the festival is Letters (2025)\, an anthology of 17 short films by Josef Khallouf reflecting on Lebanon’s recent history. The programme also includes David Bim’s To the West\, in Zapata (2025)\, which follows a Cuban crocodile hunter’s struggle to provide for his family; Azeem Rajulawalla’s More Punk Than Punk (2025)\, a portrait of a Pakistani punk artist whose music brings together personal expression and political concerns; Minimals in a Titanic World (2025) by Philbert Aimé Mbabazi\, exploring an emerging friendship in the shadow of grief; and Hind Saeed Al Basti’s Alia & Meera (2026)\, a story of two best friends whose small lie uncovers a family secret. \nThe festival closes with Larissa Sansour’s highly rated recent feature\, An Incomplete Drowning (2026)\, a contemplation on the fragility of objects and their capacity to hold history. \nThis edition also premieres two newly completed short films supported by the Sharjah Film Platform Short Film Production Grant. In I Broke a Vase (2026)\, Asim Abdulaziz explores the haunting legacy of a former journalist; Fatima Wardy’s White Musk (2026) looks at the tensions that arise when a child is compelled to parent their own parent. \nAlways central to SFP is the Competition section\, showcasing documentary and fiction films released within the past two years. Nominated by an international committee of filmmakers and industry professionals\, all titles here are being shown in the UAE for the first time; a number of screenings will be followed by Q&A sessions with the directors. \nFilms in the Competition section are eligible for the Sharjah Film Platform Awards across four categories: Documentary Feature\, Documentary Short\, Fiction Feature and Fiction Short. \nThe Director in Focus segment honours an iconic filmmaker through screenings of their landmark films. This year the accolade goes to Abderrahmane Sissako\, whose poetic films explore themes of exile and memory across Africa; a selection of his films will be screened\, among them Timbuktu (2014)\, Bamako (2006) and Black Tea (2024: still above). Sissako will share insights into his practice in a masterclass on 7 November. \nThe full programme is here; most feature tickets are a bargain AED 15\, some screenings are free.

SUMMARY:The Big Wooden Whoopsie
DESCRIPTION:“Comedy is just tragedy plus time. It’s been 3\,000 years. We’re legally allowed to be hilarious.” This original comedy – written and co-directed by top Dubai photo/videographer Ovidiu Dugulan – surveys the final stretch of a ten-year siege of Troy\, a job that should’ve taken three days … It’s good to see an original comedy\, written and produced locally\, and staged with a substantial cast of 12 actors (and possibly a big if badly built wooden horse). \nThere are further performances on 31 October and 1 November.

SUMMARY:Fouad Boussouf and CCN du Havre Normandie: Näss (People)
DESCRIPTION:The UAE premiere of Näss (People) by Moroccan choreographer Fouad Boussouf and his company Le Phare – CCN du Havre Normandie is an encounter between the raw energy of 1970s Moroccan music and the physical intensity of contemporary hip-hop. \nInspired by the influential 1970s Moroccan group Nass el Ghiwane\, Näss draws a connection between cutting social commentary in the Maghreb and a contemporary search for identity and roots within hip-hop culture in the banlieues. Näss also channels the individual strengths of its seven performers to create a collective\, trance-like work that is at once physical and meditative. \nFor Boussouf\, dance is pure impulse\, momentum\, movement – concepts which also define his artistic journey\, driven by his innate curiosity and his desire to escape. His early years in an isolated Moroccan village represented a clean\, monastic simplicity; but when he was seven\, his family moved to France and he found he had to learn quickly about a new culture and societal codes. As a teenager\, he found hip hop and that became the building blocks for his personal style of movement and then choreography. \nAppointed director of Le Havre’s Centre Chorégraphique National in 2022\, he has continued to develop a street dance aesthetic that channels spontaneity and nonstop movement. \nNäss is presented with the support of Dance Reflections by Van Cleef and Arpels.
