SUMMARY:The Matter of Light
DESCRIPTION:Dom Art Projects’ third non-selling exhibition explores the formal and perceptual aspects of light through a variety of approaches from the 22 participants\, “from rationalist modernism and expressionism to ironic conceptualism” as Dom Arts puts it. The artists are Akram Zaatari\, Andrey Grositsky\, Armen Bugayan\, Blue Soup Group\, Boris Turetsky\, David Ter-Oganyan\, Dmitri Prigov\, Eduard Steinberg\, Elena Nemkova\, Iced Architects\, Ilya Kabakov\, Kamal Boullata\, Koka Ramishvili\, Oleg Vassiliev\, Pavel Pepperstein\, PPSS Group\, Susan Hefuna\, Timo Nasseri\, Vladimir Andreenkov\, Yuri Zlotnikov\, Zaha Hadid\, and Zoulikha Bouabdellah. \nAccording to Alisa Bagdonaite\, Dom Arts Founder and Chief Curator: “The Matter of Light explores how light has shaped the way we see across different historical moments and geographies … It opens onto a distinctly contemporary question: how is our visual reality changing as culture becomes increasingly post-digital?” \nCurated by Eugenia Kikodze\, the exhibition includes loans from Art Jameel Collection and Barjeel Art Foundation. \nTo 10 March. \nImage: Timo Nasseri\, One and One#26 (2011)

SUMMARY:Kirill Makarov: Unveiled – Painting in the Age of Post-Produced Reality
DESCRIPTION:Makarov’s solo exhibition responds to the mediated nature of contemporary reality by reconstructing armed conflict environments from fragments of media imagery circulating in a post-analogue world. Working across figurative painting and digital media\, Makarov explores the relationship between virtual and physical environments through immersive compositions that combine traditional painting with ultraviolet printing\, augmented reality\, and video games. Photographs and individual frames extracted from videos the artist found online are treated as spatial coordinates\, allowing scenes to be reassembled as three-dimensional settings\, with varying degrees of precision depending on the quality and quantity of the source material. \nTo 10 March. \nImage: Kirill Makarov\, Ornament (2024)

SUMMARY:Localized Futures: The Arts
DESCRIPTION:421’s season of talks and panel discussions developed in collaboration with afikra\, Localized Futures\, explores the future of key cultural and civic sectors through a regional lens – challenging the dominant global narrative by looking at the complexities\, innovations\, and solutions inherent to the MENA region. Across four sessions on Collective Heritage\, Cities & Communities\, Education\, and The Arts\, the series brings together institutional leaders\, policy shapers\, and cultural pioneers to spotlight the people actively building these futures today. \nFor this session on The Arts\, we’re told the speakers will share their perspectives on arts patronage\, the role of independent platforms\, and the responsibility cultural institutions carry in making space for both established and emerging voices. It looks a good panel for that – Faisal Al Hassan\, director of 421 Arts Campus; Stephanie Rosenthal\, director of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Project; Vilma Jurkute\, founding Director of Alserkal and now an independent advisor connecting culture\, urbanism & community; and Shaikha Nawar Al Qassimi\, Vice President of Sharjah Art Foundation. The moderator is Mikey Muhanna\, founder and Executive Director of afikra. \nThe panel discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A and refreshments. \n
