SUMMARY:Sharjah Animation and Comics Conference
DESCRIPTION:The fourth edition of SACC returns to Aljada from 22-25 October with more than 150 activities – masterclasses\, workshops\, seminars\, talks and “hands-on experiences”. \nThere are separate programmes for Animation and Comics\, which rather begs the question of why the two have been rammed into the same schedule. The PR bumf says bringing the two programmes together “will allow participants to explore connections between animation and comics\, including character development\, visual storytelling\, adaptation\, publishing\, physical design and digital formats”\, but there are some obvious scheduling collisions … \nThe Animation stream is rather better developed\, exploring the craft and industry behind development and production for feature-length and short films and TV series; there will be masterclasses and workshops on writing\, drawing\, storyboarding\, character performance\, movement\, traditional and digital animation\, stop-motion\, dubbing\, and voice acting. Participants can also explore how physical performance and motion capture are translated into digital characters and how emerging technologies are being used in animation workflows. And industry sessions will look at issues like financing\, co-production\, international collaboration and distribution. \nThe Comics programme will enable participants can develop their skills in drawing\, cartooning\, character and world development\, visual storytelling and writing\, while exploring how comic ideas can be adapted across different formats. Sessions will also examine connections between comics and animation\, film\, CGI and physical character design. Publishing\, representation and international opportunities will feature alongside the business of comics and collectables. \nThe agenda for talks and workshops is pretty impressive\, with lots of practical experience and hard advice on offer along with some debating issues (like ‘Are we training animators for the real world?’). Elsewhere and new for this year are a meet-the-creators Artist Alley\, arcade and esports plus a board games area\, a cosplay competition\, card trading\, and DIY dubbing. And evening concerts will deliver music from Disney\, anime and other potentially relevant scores. \nEarly-bird passes may still be available. Otherwise you’ll pay full price: \n⚫ Four-day pass AED 450 (students AED 175)\n⚫ Business pass AED 750 (adds “exclusive business networking”)

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Private World
DESCRIPTION:A group show for Lulua Alyahya\, Rami Farook\, Sohrab Hura\, and Khaled Jarada that promises to take the viewer into “intimate\, elusive worlds … Modest in scale\, [the works] invite a form of looking that is closer and more inward\, creating encounters that feel private rather than public”. The gallery goes on: “Many of the works evoke states of solitude\, seclusion and inward attention. They seem to exist apart from the demands of the outside world\, creating spaces for reflection\, imagination and feeling. Across the exhibition\, intimacy takes different forms: through personal observation\, fragments and fleeting moments\, relationships and lived experience\, or through atmospheric and psychologically charged spaces …”

SUMMARY:Shamin Sharum: Provisional Sanctuaries
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition by Malaysian artist and designer that reflects on the quiet\, temporary musollas that pop up in the UAE’s warehouses\, shopfronts\, and back rooms\, modest prayer spaces that are shaped by necessity rather than formal design. Through paintings\, drawings\, and maquettes\, Sharum examines how fleeting environments can create belonging\, stillness\, and connection among strangers joined by faith in the city. As he says\, “Relocating to Dubai made me feel like an outsider\, but discovering a small cabin-like musolla tucked within a transient site during my early days provided an unexpected sense of familiarity\, softening my feelings of displacement”. \nBy lifting these spaces out of their functional settings\, says the gallery\, “Sharum invites viewers to look closely at details that are often overlooked. His works isolate\, flatten\, and reconstruct fragments of these environments\, allowing the audience to reconsider how sacredness can emerge through practice\, memory\, and human presence rather than architecture alone …” \nTo 26 November.
