SUMMARY:Bodies that Make\, Bodies that Grieve
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Shafeena Yusuff Ali of the Rizq Art Initiative\, this exhibition brings together contemporary ceramics by eight women artists based in the UAE – Nujoom Alghanem\, Mirna Bamieh\, Moza Al Falasi\, Malavika\, Parneet Pahwa\, Zahra Shafie\, Laiba Sherin\, and Haseena Suresh. Their practices draw attention to knowledge developed through making and touch\, and its longstanding place in women’s work and care. As Executive Director of the NYUAD Art Gallery Maya Allison put it: “The artists use the intimate\, tactile process of working with clay to explore the body\, emotion\, and lived experience today. We hope the exhibition encourages audiences to engage with ceramics not simply as objects\, but as a way of thinking\, feeling\, and communicating”. \nTo 13 December. \nImage: Hasseena Suresh\, Birth of a River (2024\, detail)

SUMMARY:Sharjah Animation and Comics Conference
DESCRIPTION:The fourth edition of SACC returns to Aljada from 22-25 October with more than 150 activities – masterclasses\, workshops\, seminars\, talks and “hands-on experiences”. \nThere are separate programmes for Animation and Comics\, which rather begs the question of why the two have been rammed into the same schedule. The PR bumf says bringing the two programmes together “will allow participants to explore connections between animation and comics\, including character development\, visual storytelling\, adaptation\, publishing\, physical design and digital formats”\, but there are some obvious scheduling collisions … \nThe Animation stream is rather better developed\, exploring the craft and industry behind development and production for feature-length and short films and TV series; there will be masterclasses and workshops on writing\, drawing\, storyboarding\, character performance\, movement\, traditional and digital animation\, stop-motion\, dubbing\, and voice acting. Participants can also explore how physical performance and motion capture are translated into digital characters and how emerging technologies are being used in animation workflows. And industry sessions will look at issues like financing\, co-production\, international collaboration and distribution. \nThe Comics programme will enable participants can develop their skills in drawing\, cartooning\, character and world development\, visual storytelling and writing\, while exploring how comic ideas can be adapted across different formats. Sessions will also examine connections between comics and animation\, film\, CGI and physical character design. Publishing\, representation and international opportunities will feature alongside the business of comics and collectables. \nThe agenda for talks and workshops is pretty impressive\, with lots of practical experience and hard advice on offer along with some debating issues (like ‘Are we training animators for the real world?’). Elsewhere and new for this year are a meet-the-creators Artist Alley\, arcade and esports plus a board games area\, a cosplay competition\, card trading\, and DIY dubbing. And evening concerts will deliver music from Disney\, anime and other potentially relevant scores. \nEarly-bird passes may still be available. Otherwise you’ll pay full price: \n⚫ Four-day pass AED 450 (students AED 175)\n⚫ Business pass AED 750 (adds “exclusive business networking”)

SUMMARY:A Writing Practice: Ekphrastic Poetry\, in Dialogue with Archipelago of Whispers
DESCRIPTION:421’s writing seminar\, led by Sarah Afaneh and designed for writers at any stage of their practice\, explores the relationship between looking and writing\, considering how an encounter with an artwork can translate into emotion\, memory\, and poetic response. With intuition\, curiosity\, and imagination as moments of expansion\, participants will experiment with ekphrasis as a way of transforming what we see into language.

SUMMARY:UAENO: Romantic Masters
DESCRIPTION:The UAE National Orchestra continues its active schedule with a good-looking programme of contrasting music from three great Romantic composers – lively melodies from Rossini in the overture to The Barber of Seville\, technical virtuosity and expressive range in Mendelssohn’s violin concerto (with Hungarian violinist Júlia Pusker making her UAENO debut as the soloist)\, and the richness of a full Brahms symphony. Umberto Clerici conducts. \nThe programme: \nRossini: Overture to The Barber of Seville\nMendelssohn: Violin Concerto in E Minor\nBrahms: Symphony No.2

SUMMARY:Un Air de Famille
DESCRIPTION:Dubai’s long-established bastion of Francophone theatre\, Culture Emulsion\, looks like it has picked another winner with this French comedy – the play by Agnès Jaoui and Jean-Pierre Bacri was a great success in 1994\, and it was made into an equally successful film a couple of years later. And it is very funny\, a sharp and blackish comedy about the ties that unite (and sometimes suffocate). Every Friday the Mesnards gather at the family café before going to dinner; but for this night the unspoken tensions and buried frustrations are revealed. There’s a second performance tomorrow (23 October).
