SUMMARY:Rana Begum: Taking Form
DESCRIPTION:Rana Begum brings her textile works to The Third Line for the first time. Her fifth solo exhibition at the gallery features a new body of large-scale wool tapestries presented alongside works on linen\, paper and MDF\, all reflecting the artist’s longstanding engagement with abstraction and minimalism and continuing her exploration of light through new materials and forms. Her characteristic engagement with geometry runs throughout\, with forms suggesting patterns that extend beyond their physical boundaries. \nSuspended from the ceiling in Gallery 1\, Begum’s nearly 5m-tall tapestries should transform the space into a vast\, immersive field of cascading colour. The tapestries are feature coloured triangles\, woven together using the ridging technique that results in a dual pattern revealed only as the viewer moves around them. \nGallery 2 will have a series of large-scale linen paintings. The natural\, unprocessed tone and texture of the linen influence the colour as it is absorbed into the weave\, creating a sense of rawness and an organic quality across the surface. SUMMARY:Maggie Otieno: Sojourner – The Difference Is the Same
DESCRIPTION:New works by the Kenyan artist Maggie Otieno\, her first solo show here since the gallery began representing her in 2024 . Otieno’s practice centres on the transformation of reclaimed and distressed materials.; working across wood\, metal\, and mixed media\, her semi -abstract forms explore layered narratives of history\, memory\, human interaction\, and environmental survival. Her works function as vessels of remembrance and renewal\, grounding social and historical reflection in physical form. \nFeatured in the exhibition are new works based around railway sleepers\, symbols of East Africa’s colonial past. More than 150 years old\, these timbers travelled from India to Kenya for railway lines\, carrying with them the stories of travellers\, labourers\, and communities. Also included are works created during a residency at El Anatsui Studio in Ghana last summer. Sculptures made from fragments of wooden canoes bear traces of memory and passage; some are hinged to resemble books\, evoking the turning of a page and the opening of a new chapter. \nTo 13 November.

DESCRIPTION:Borrowed from the poetry of Mahmoud Darwish\, the title of this exhibition by by London-based artist Nada Elkalaawy “speaks to the tension between sensitivity\, beauty\, and emotional weight”\, as the gallery has it. “Across a body of paintings developed through layered processes of accumulation and erasure\, Elkalaawy explores memory\, loss\, regeneration\, and the passage of time; ephemeral forms including flowers\, butterflies\, domestic vessels\, family photographs\, and ghostly figures hold traces of shared human experience\, drifting between past and present\, presence and absence.” \nElkalaawy’s practice is based in the relationship between memory\, representation\, and materiality. SUMMARY:Tirdad Hashemi and Soufia Erfanian: I Bloom Where You Hold Me
DESCRIPTION:Collaborative works from Tirdad Hashemi and Soufia Erfanian’s ongoing Flower series\, unfolding across gallery walls covered with hand-drawn graffiti; rooted in the artists’ shared and individual experiences\, the works consider what it means to care for\, sustain and grow alongside one another. For Hashemi and Erfanian\, tending to plants\, relationships and artistic practice all share a common faith in growth. And even amid destruction\, flowers return and spring cannot be stopped:the act of tending becomes a method of resistance. \nPrimarily oil pastel on paper\, the drawings use a rough and immediate visual language. Flowers are built from loose\, gestural marks; colours bleed as figurative scenes appear almost like small windows embedded within wild fields. The process is similarly intertwined. Hashemi and Erfanian move freely across the same surface; one may begin a work and the other finish. DESCRIPTION:A solo presentation by the French-Algerian artist and filmmaker that reinterprets The Conference of the Birds\,a 12th-century epic poem by Farid ud-Din Attar\, in which a flock of birds search for a mighty ruler and ultimately find their strength within themselves. \nIn Kameli’s video Le Cantique des oiseaux (2022) actresses process while playing bird-shaped ceramic instruments\, an eerie procession that stands in sharp contrast to the urban environment of Paris. A follow-up film\, Le Cantique des oiseaux\, variation (2022)\, was staged in a seaside garden on the French Riviera; here\, the physical challenge of dancing while playing fragile ceramic instruments creates a visible tension between the performers’ bodies and the delicate artwork. The earthenware instruments are bird-shaped ocarinas\, created by Kameli with ceramicist Marie Picard; to bring these sculptural birds to life\, Kameli worked with composer Aurélie Sfez and choreographer Youness Anzane. \nTo 11 November.

DESCRIPTION:Coke bottles seem identical\, but differ subtly from one country to another. These variations in taste and appearance highlight the simulacral nature of the Coca-Cola bottle – a semblance of an imagined universal ideal. The incursion of multinational brands into local markets reflects a form of neocolonisation; but despite limited technical facilities and economic constraints\, local recycling practices thrive out of necessity; local vendors\, often resourceful and inventive\, repurpose discarded branded bottles to package their own beverages. \nSharmila Samant began the Loca-Cola project in 2000; he collects glass Coca-Cola bottles from various countries and juxtaposes them with distinctly local flavours to explore the polemics of ‘local’ and ‘global’: “Is the ‘local’ inherently oppositional to the ‘global’\, or is it an intrinsic part of it?

DESCRIPTION:The Courtyard’s popular evening of elimination improv. Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is knocked out. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early to grab a seat.
