SUMMARY:On Photography: The Shortest Shadow
DESCRIPTION:A three-day discussion-based practical seminar (evenings\, 6-9pm) investigating photography’s seeming constraint – its ‘short shadow’\, edging in on what already exists – and how that makes it a radical driver of modern art and thought. The seminar leader is Rohit Goel\, Director of the Bombay Institute for Critical Analysis and Research (BICAR). \nThis course is free\, and all necessary materials are provided by Sharjah Art Foundation.

SUMMARY:Makers Days
DESCRIPTION:Dubai Culture’s Makers Days initiative is back – two days intended to promote creative manufacturing in Dubai by bringing together makers\, designers\, artists\, creative entrepreneurs\, manufacturers\, and fabricators with a view to promoting new opportunities for SMEs (both manufacturers and people who might want something made). It’s aiming to attract more than 150 participants for a programme of workshops\, talks\, panel discussions\, networking sessions; a Maker’s Connect programme will provide “curated mentorship opportunities”; and there will be guided visits to a selection of production facilities within the Al Quoz Creative Zone. \nApplogies for the lack of detail; we have gleaned this much from a press release but there doesn’t seem to be any online information either at Dubai Culture’s website or Alserkal’s. The programme will probably be published first on Instagram\, so maybe keep an eye on that. We’ll try to keep abreast of this and update when we can …

SUMMARY:Spider's Web
DESCRIPTION:The final performances for H72 Productions’ treatment of the Agatha Christie play – a country-house thriller-comedy with clues aplenty and a good helping of plot contrivances (including a most convenient hidden door in the study that of course leads to a secret passage) and a disappearing corpse. There are shows at 2.30pm and 7.30pm.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Shezad Dawood: Skin of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Shezad Dawood’s 25-year career spans painting\, textiles\, sculpture\, ceramics\, film\, performance and digital media. Fascinated by ecologies and architecture\, his work connects art\, science\, music\, environmentalism and technology to explore both alternative histories and futures\, through a process of continuous world-building expressed as an explosion of colour and multi-layered narratives; and that should make this first mid-career retrospective of the artist a must-visit. The exhibition\, which is curated by Jessica Cerasi\, features more than 40 works including painting\, sculpture\, monumental film installations\, and interactive virtual reality experiences.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Laila Majid and Inaam Zafar: Body Quotidian
DESCRIPTION:Recent works by Laila Majid and Inaam Zafar that explore the human body and its presence in contemporary life through metaphor and symbolism. In Majid’s practice\, sculptural and photographic works unfold through slow revelation; Zafar’s practice explores themes of death and decay\, while foregrounding the body as a perishable entity. Bringing together these works\, Body Quotidian explores how light\, material\, gesture and atmosphere filters bodily experience; Moving between domestic scenes and abstraction\, the exhibition reflects on the quiet\, everyday moments through which the body continues to shape how we see and inhabit the world. \n

SUMMARY:Artist's Room: Shezad Dawood
DESCRIPTION:Dawood’s New Dream Machine Project centres on a 3m-high rotating and flickering light sculpture\, an homage to artist and writer Brion Gysin’s Dreamachine; driving the mechanism is a perforated cylinder emitting pulses of light at the frequency of the brain’s alpha waves\, said to induce altered states of consciousness. Originally commissioned for the Abraaj Group Art Prize in 2011 and first presented at Art Dubai that same year\, the work is part of the Art Jameel Collection and has rarely been exhibited since. \nHere the sculpture is presented alongside two smaller Recyclages prototypes and archival materials tracing the project’s history. \nTo 31 January.

SUMMARY:Artist's Room: Walid Siti
DESCRIPTION:This Artist’s Room traces forty years of Walid Siti’s practice\, including new sculptural commissions and material from the artist’s studio. Across his body of work\, structural forms mirror geological formations\, rising summits\, Mesopotamian ziggurats\, and the Tower of Babel\, all alluding to a persistent\, often reckless\, human drive toward ascension. A newly commissioned large-scale sculpture\, Registry of the Lived\, reflects on the troubled history of Kurdistan\, displayed alongside the War Series\, an early ensemble of drawings and etchings from the 1980s made during Siti’s years of exile. \nTo 31 January. \nRight: Walid Siti\, Mountains(2013)
