SUMMARY:The sky held it\, the earth remembered
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of major works by Shahana Rajani\, Rohini Devasher\, and Sarker Protick that considers how land\, water\, and the cosmos serve as living archives of memory and history. Through photography\, moving image\, and installation\, the exhibition proposes that the environment bears the material traces of ecological change\, rejecting a human-centred vision of the world in favour of the view that people and non-human forces are irrevocably intertwined. \nIn Shahana Rajani’s ‘Lines That World a River’\, the Indus emerges as a site of extraction\, erasure and contested memory. The three-channel film traces the experiences of displaced communities of the delta who create murals and paintings to reconstruct and memorialise their ancestral villages\, submerged underwater due to the building of hydraulic dams and barrages. \nRohini Devasher’s ‘Latent Fields’ consists of three monumental habutai silk panels suspended from the ceiling and emblazoned with images inspired by sun spots and other solar phenomena. First rendered on paper-thin copper sheets using techniques such as drawing\, acid washing\, embossing and fumage\, these images are then photographed\, scanned and digitally printed onto the fabric. \nAnd a selection from Sarker Protick’s ‘Dhaka 1217’\, a recent series of 135 black-and-white photographs\, documents the transformation of a one square mile around the neighbourhood where the artist was born and continues to live. The built environment slowly encroaches on parks\, lakes and vegetation: a railway line under development almost obscures foliage in the distance; palm trees stand buffeted by rain behind construction hoardings. \nTo 15 December. \nAbove: Rohini Devasher\, Latent Fields (Field Seven) (2023). SUMMARY:The Butterfly Who Flew Into The Rave
DESCRIPTION:Second of three performances for this award-winning contemporary dance from Aotearoa/New Zealand. Created by Oli Mathiesen with Lucy Lynch and Sharvon Mortimer and inspired by the energy and emotion of rave culture\, it’s a spectacle of stamina\, sweat\, and sheer willpower performed to a pulsating soundtrack of techno\, house and more by Detroit DJ Suburban Knight’s album Nocturbulous Behaviour. \nOli Mathiesen has described it as “an endurance-based dance work” that “embraces the movement vocabulary of techno and rave culture\, creating a contemporary nightclub experience expressed through three bodies … We like to think of it as a three-day rave condensed into 60 minutes of relentless\, seamless movement\, perfectly synced to every beat … The piece taps into that primal need to keep going\, keep pushing\, and chase more – no matter the cost”. \nIt runs Thursday to Saturday\, 10 to 12 September. Each performance will be followed by a short dance party\, with DJ sets by Dubai’s very cool Analog Room.
