SUMMARY:Vantage Point 13
DESCRIPTION:The latest edition of Sharjah Art Foundation’s open-call photography exhibition examines the evolving possibilities of documentary photography through newly commissioned works by six artists – Luisa Dörr\, Latifa AlBokhari\, Sathish Kumar\, Adam Rouhana\, Guanyu Xu and Maheder Haileselassie. \nThe principle is that photography is not simply as a tool for recording reality but can be treated as a medium through which histories and systems of representation are negotiated. So through portraiture and observational strategies\, Dörr\, AlBokhari and Kumar probe the nuances of lived experience\, tracing intimate connections between land and belonging via long-term collaborations with individuals\, families and communities; Rouhana\, Guanyu Xu and Haileselassie explore themes of absence and rupture\, photography as a means of grappling with questions of visibility and with histories interrupted by conflict or erasure. As SAF puts it: “The works position documentary photography as a field in transformation – one defined not by static truths\, but by continual discernment”. \nVantage Point 13 is curated by Sara Al Mheiri and Osemudiamen Ekore of the SAF curatorial team. \nTo 29 November. \nAbove: Sathish Kumar\, Dream (2026). SUMMARY:Shan Castelino: To Live Boldly\, To Love Wildly
DESCRIPTION:Castelino has spent nearly three decades in Dubai with an extensive career at Christie’s and senior positions within leading contemporary galleries\, working with some of the most celebrated contemporary artists of our time and gaining a rare perspective on artistic practice\, materiality\, and the emotional possibilities of abstraction. As a result\, her debut solo exhibition – a new body of paintings that covers “resilience\, memory\, transformation\, and the enduring dialogue between humanity and the natural world” – should be well worth the visit. \nRather than depicting landscapes\, says the gallery\, Castelino paints “emotional terrains”. So nature is never treated simply as scenery; instead\, it becomes a living metaphor for the human condition. Built through successive layers of paint\, texture\, gesture\, and light\, the paintings reveal themselves gradually. “Botanical forms emerge before dissolving into luminous fields of colour. Leaves become fragments of memory. Water suggests movement\, surrender\, and healing. The surface itself records time\, with each layer preserving traces of experiences that can never be erased but continue to shape what follows …”

SUMMARY:Habeeb Abu-Futtaim: The Ongoing Performance of Melancholia and Songs in Solitude
DESCRIPTION:Two interconnected exhibitions\, both curated by Mo Reda and supported by the Department of Painting and Printmaking at VCUarts Qatar. Together\, The Ongoing Performance of Melancholia and Songs in Solitude mark the culmination of a two-month residency at Bayt AlMamzar; they present several different bodies of work developed over the past ten years\, drawing from an artistic practice shaped by sustained research\, investigation\, and critical inquiry. \nWorking across painting\, installation\, performance\, video\, and writing\, Abu-Futtaim investigates the construction and performance of collective identities\, examining how inherited symbols\, political imaginaries\, and cultural narratives become internalized as expressions of belonging. Songs in Solitude reflects on the intimate space of artistic practice through playfulness\, imagination\, intimacy\, and selfhood; The Ongoing Performance of Melancholia turns outward to examine the inherited performances of collective identity and the burden of unrealized political futures. Between them the exhibitions move between the personal and the political\, revealing how solitude\, memory\, and collective imagination continually shape one another. \nTo 2 October.
