DESCRIPTION:More than 50 women graduates have contributed their stories and photographs to this oral history project exploring the experiences of women film graduates in India and the “unremembered” stories of women’s labour in film. \nSurabhi Sharma\, NYUAD Associate Dean for the Arts and Creative Practices and Associate Professor of Practice of Film and New Media\, is an independent filmmaker making feature-length documentaries and short films since 2000. Her documentaries\, fiction\, and video installations engage with cities in transition using the lens of labour\, music\, and migration.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Shalabia Ibrahim: Fields of Memory
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition curated by Randa Sadaka\, promising “a rare and intimate journey into a visual language shaped by the intersections of Egyptian and Syrian modernities”. Born in Egypt and long based in Syria\, Ibrahim’s practice is informed by the visual traditions of the Levant and the rural soul of the Nile; stylised figures and simplified forms create compositions that are both accessible and symbolic. “Shalabia’s work allows the ordinary to exist within a shared visual memory\,” says curator Randa Sadaka. “Everyday gestures and familiar faces are elevated\, becoming archetypes of continuity and renewal.”

SUMMARY:Ahmad AlAttar: Human in the Loop
DESCRIPTION:Human in the Loop is a sound-based interactive installation that takes the form of a game of hide-and-seek between visitors and an unseen algorithm. Hanging ropes are suspended from the ceiling and visitors are invited to pull on them; each pull interrupts the continuous ambient sounds of nature with a brief\, glitch-like sound. At first\, these responses may feel random\, but with repetition\, patterns begin to emerge; and when the correct rope is found\, the system responds with a distinct and heightened auditory moment – a brief reward that signals discovery. Almost immediately\, the algorithm relocates\, hiding once again within the field of ropes\, and the search resets. \nSo what begins as playful interaction gradually becomes an act of careful listening and navigation. Human in the Loop reflects a contemporary paradox: we take pleasure in interaction even as it draws us deeper into technological rhythms that are increasingly difficult to step away from. \nAhmad AlAttar\, currently is a Senior Robotics Engineer at Dubai Future Labs\, was a participant in the 2024 cycle of the 421 Artistic Development Program (ADP)\, facilitated by Jolaine Frizzell. During preparation for the exhibition he was also mentored by Khalid AlAwadhi\, Founder & CEO of Remal\, and Dr Pradeep Sharma\, Director of the Arts\, Culture and Heritage program at the Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation. \nTo 13 September.
