SUMMARY:Charlie Koolhaas: AFTER THE IMAGE
DESCRIPTION:Developed in relation to the UAE Modern Architectural Heritage Grant\, AFTER THE IMAGE transforms a gallery presentation and a room of the XVA Art Hotel into an immersive archive of Dubai’s modern architectural heritage. Through photography\, sculpture\, textiles\, and garments\, the exhibition explores the city’s changing urban landscapes and the stories embedded within them. Koolhaas reimagines the archive as something lived\, worn\, and experienced\, where architecture\, memory\, and everyday life converge … To 16 July.

SUMMARY:2nd Desert Architecture Forum
DESCRIPTION:The second edition of this potentially significant gathering for architects\, sustainability leaders and “urban innovators” promises a stronger vision and expanded scope to underscore the vital role of ‘desert architecture’ in shaping climate-smart cities\, resilient infrastructures\, and self-sufficient communities across the Middle East and beyond. The specific aims include building more collaboration between architects\, policymakers\, developers\, technology providers and researchers; highlighting new technologies and smart materials; blending traditional desert knowledge with modern architectural solutions; and positioning MENA as a global hub for climate-responsive architecture (surely “the main market for climate-responsive architecture”). \nThese it will deliver via two days of keynotes\, presentations and panel discussions\, with much space for networking and an exhibition area with two dozen booths. Someone has chosen the conference topics well: they range from the almost philosophical (‘Landscapes of the Future: Beyond Aesthetics and Ecology in Desert Design’ and ‘ From Sand to Skyline: Shaping a New Architectural Identity for the Desert Century’) to the really quite specific (‘Future Facades: Balancing Aesthetics\, Performance\, and Climate Resilience’ and ‘Curating the Darkness: How Light and Shadow Shape Placemaking in Desert Destinations’). \nThe registration fee is a modest $25. \n
